If a purchase invoice is missing from your GSTR-2B, first reconcile the invoice with your purchase register and the GST Portal, then ask the supplier to verify its GSTIN and invoice data and file or correct the relevant outward-supply details. You cannot add or edit a document in GSTR-2B yourself. A filing made after the portal’s cutoff may appear in a later statement, so the missing month is not by itself proof that the credit is permanently lost.
This is practical guidance for registered businesses in India. Apply the tax period, financial year and rules in force for your transaction; portal cutoffs and legal provisions can change.

What a missing GSTR-2B invoice means
GSTR-2B is a read-only, auto-drafted statement assembled from supplier and input service distributor filings and specified import data. It is designed for reconciliation, not for recipient-side data entry. If an invoice does not appear, the recipient cannot type it into the statement or correct the supplier’s return from the recipient account.

The omission can have several explanations: the supplier has not filed, filed after the cutoff used for that statement, entered the wrong recipient GSTIN, reported an incorrect invoice detail, amended or duplicated a document, or reported the transaction in another period. An invoice date in your books does not by itself determine the GSTR-2B in which the document will appear; the supplier’s filing and the portal’s assembly cutoff matter.

GSTR-2B is an important control and reconciliation document, but it is not a complete legal ruling on eligibility. The GST Portal’s own FAQ says that its “ITC not available” indicators cover specified situations and that other restrictions may not be captured. You must test the transaction against the current CGST Act, Rules, notifications and the actual facts.
Run a field-by-field reconciliation before contacting the supplier
Start with the exact GSTIN, tax period and statement selected on the GST Portal. Then compare the supplier invoice, your purchase register and the relevant GSTR-2B. Record differences rather than relying on a general message that the credit is “not showing.”
Fields to match
- Supplier’s GSTIN, including every character.
- Invoice or debit-note number and date.
- Taxable value and each tax component.
- Place of supply and whether the transaction is treated as inter-State or intra-State.
- The period in which the supplier says the document was reported.
- Any credit note, debit note, amendment or duplicate entry linked to the original invoice.
Confirm that you are viewing the correct registration when a business has multiple GSTINs. Check whether the document belongs to a different month or quarter, and whether an amended record has replaced the original. A transcription error in the buyer GSTIN is particularly important: the supplier may have filed, but the data can be directed to another recipient or become unusable for your reconciliation.

Check whether filing timing explains the omission
According to the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQ, a monthly recipient’s statement is generated on the 14th of the succeeding month. A quarterly recipient receives a quarter statement on the 14th of the month following that quarter. The same FAQ describes filing cutoffs for documents included in each statement. A supplier document filed after the applicable cutoff can therefore feed a later open GSTR-2B rather than the statement you first checked.
These dates are operating instructions, not a guarantee that every late filing will be visible immediately. Before relying on a specific date, check the live GST Portal guidance for your return type and period. Note the supplier’s actual filing date, the cutoff that applied, and the next statement in which the document should be checked.
Timing checklist
- Identify whether your registration receives monthly or quarterly GSTR-2B.
- Write down the invoice period and the statement period in which you expected it.
- Ask when the supplier filed or will file the relevant outward-supply details.
- Compare that filing date with the portal cutoff for the statement.
- Schedule a check of the next applicable open GSTR-2B instead of repeatedly editing your purchase register to force a match.
Ask the supplier for a specific correction
The supplier, not the recipient, must correct supplier-side reporting. Send a written request that identifies the invoice and the exact discrepancy. Include your legal name, GSTIN, invoice number and date, taxable value, tax amount, place of supply, the statement period you checked and a copy of the invoice if appropriate.

When the supplier has not reported the invoice
Ask the supplier to file the applicable outward-supply return and to confirm the filing period and date. If the supplier follows the QRMP scheme, it may use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) for the first two months of a quarter. IFF is a supplier facility; it does not give the recipient a way to create a missing document.
When the supplier reported incorrect details
Ask the supplier to verify the recipient GSTIN, invoice particulars, tax values and place of supply, and to use the correction mechanism available for that tax period. GSTR-1A is an optional same-period facility that can allow an eligible supplier to add a missed record or amend a mistake, subject to the portal’s timing and filing conditions. The GST Portal states that information added or amended through GSTR-1A becomes available to the recipient in the next tax-period GSTR-2B.
Request a written response stating what was corrected, the return or facility used, the filing date and the next GSTR-2B period in which you should look. Keep the date you contacted the supplier and the invoice fields you supplied. A precise record is more useful than a series of unanswered reminders.

Recheck the next statement after the supplier files
Once the supplier confirms filing, reconcile the next applicable GSTR-2B against the invoice and your purchase register. Do not assume that an existing statement is rewritten instantly. GSTR-2B is static for its statement period; later supplier filings generally flow into a later open statement according to the portal’s cutoffs.
GSTN’s Invoice Management System (IMS) guidance also indicates that recipients cannot act on certain upward-amended invoice or debit-note records until the supplier files them. IMS can help you review and act on supplier-provided records where available, but it cannot manufacture supplier data or make a recipient-side addition to GSTR-2B.
Reconciliation record to retain
- Original invoice and any related debit or credit note.
- Purchase-register entry and the reconciliation result for each statement period.
- GSTR-2B download or screenshot showing the omission and later appearance, if any.
- Proof that goods or services were received.
- Payment records and the date payment was made.
- Supplier emails, acknowledgements, correction details and filing dates.
- Return periods considered and the legal or professional advice obtained.
Separate portal visibility from legal ITC eligibility
Having an invoice in your files is not, by itself, a guarantee of input tax credit. Conversely, a missing GSTR-2B entry does not by itself answer every legal question. Assess the statutory conditions using the current law and the transaction facts, including whether the supply was actually received, the document is valid, the tax treatment is correct, and the credit is not blocked by a specific restriction.

The 180-day payment condition
CBIC’s input tax credit rules describe a payment condition involving 180 days and the related reporting or reversal treatment when that condition is not met. The exact consequence depends on the rule, transaction and later payment, so apply the current rule text rather than treating “180 days” as a universal filing deadline. Keep evidence of payment and obtain advice where the timing is disputed.
Blocked or restricted credits
The portal’s unavailable classification covers specified cases only. Other restrictions, such as those arising from the nature or use of the purchase or from particular statutory provisions, may not be fully represented in the statement. A professional review is appropriate when the invoice is high value, the transaction is unusual, or the credit is challenged after reconciliation.
What to do if the supplier does not cooperate
Continue the reconciliation for the correct period and send a written request with a reasonable response date. Ask the supplier for a correction plan, not merely an assurance that “the return was filed.” Preserve all supporting records and avoid describing the credit as finally available until the legal conditions and your reporting position have been checked.

Quick Recap
Choose the practical response for your situation
| Situation | Most useful next action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier says it filed, but the document missed the cutoff | Wait for the next open statement and reconcile again | Supplier filing date, applicable cutoff and next GSTR-2B period |
| Invoice or GSTIN details are absent or wrong | Request supplier correction or filing for the relevant period | Correct GSTIN, invoice fields, tax period and correction mechanism |
| Supplier follows QRMP | Ask whether IFF was used for the first two months or the quarterly return will carry the data | Quarter, month and filing facility used |
| Persistent mismatch or disputed eligibility | Obtain a fact-specific review from a qualified GST professional | Receipt, payment, statutory conditions, deadlines and evidence trail |
Common mistakes that delay resolution
- Editing the recipient’s books to match an absent portal record: keep the accounting record accurate and document the mismatch instead.
- Assuming invoice date controls statement period: filing date and portal cutoffs can place the document in a later statement.
- Sending the supplier an unspecific request: provide the GSTIN, invoice fields, period and exact correction needed.
- Treating GSTR-2B as the legal decision: test all statutory conditions and restrictions separately.
- Claiming that a late filing will appear immediately: recheck the next applicable statement under current portal instructions.
- Relying on a verbal promise: retain written confirmation, filing details and the period to monitor.
A concise action plan
- Open the correct GSTIN and tax period on the GST Portal.
- Match supplier GSTIN, invoice number and date, values, taxes, place of supply and related notes across the invoice, books and GSTR-2B.
- Check monthly or quarterly statement timing and the filing cutoff that applied.
- Send the supplier a written request to file or correct the outward-supply details, asking whether GSTR-1A or QRMP IFF is relevant.
- Record the supplier’s filing date and recheck the next applicable GSTR-2B.
- Assess receipt, payment, blocked-credit rules and other statutory conditions independently.
- Escalate with complete evidence to a qualified GST professional when the mismatch, deadline or amount makes the decision material.
