Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a supplier has not reported your purchase invoice in GSTR-1, ask the supplier in writing to file the B2B invoice with your correct GSTIN or amend the incorrect entry. Keep the invoice and the correction request, then recheck GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B and the Invoice Management System (IMS). If the supplier has already filed GSTR-1 but has not yet filed GSTR-3B for that period, the supplier may be able to use GSTR-1A to add or correct the record. That entry normally reaches your GSTR-2B in the following tax period, not the same one.
Do not treat possession of an invoice, a supplier’s promise to correct it, or an entry visible only as a saved document in IMS as automatic proof that input tax credit (ITC) is claimable. Eligibility still has to be assessed under section 16 of the CGST Act and other applicable restrictions and time limits.

First identify what is missing
A purchase invoice can be absent from your records for several different reasons. The correct remedy depends on the supplier’s filing status and on whether the supplier used the right recipient details.

| What you find | What it usually means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No invoice in GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B or IMS | The supplier may not have reported it, may not have filed the relevant return, or the statement cycle may not yet include it. | Ask the supplier to confirm the tax period and filing status, then request filing or correction. |
| Invoice saved in IMS but absent from GSTR-2B | The supplier document may have been saved but not filed. The revised IMS advisory says only supplier-filed records are considered for GSTR-2B. | Wait for the supplier to file and then check the applicable GSTR-2B cycle. |
| Invoice appears under another GSTIN | The supplier reported the transaction with incorrect recipient details. | Request an amendment to the recipient GSTIN; do not assume the other entry can support your ITC. |
| Invoice appears with a wrong number, date, value or tax amount | The record was filed but contains a data error. | Give the supplier the correct particulars and request an amendment through the available return facility. |
Compare the original invoice with the GSTIN, invoice number and date, taxable value, and tax amounts displayed in each statement. GSTR-2B is a read-only, static, auto-drafted ITC statement generated from supplier filing data. It is intended to inform preparation of GSTR-3B; it is not a return that you file and it does not, by itself, decide every statutory condition for claiming credit.

Ask the supplier for a written correction
Contact the supplier promptly and state exactly what is wrong: missing invoice, wrong GSTIN, duplicate, incorrect invoice number, or a tax-period mismatch. Attach or reference the invoice and ask the supplier to confirm:
- the tax period in which the invoice will be reported;
- whether the relevant GSTR-1 has already been filed;
- whether that period’s GSTR-3B has been filed; and
- which correction route the supplier intends to use.
Keep the request, the supplier’s response, purchase records, proof that the goods or services were received, and payment evidence with your tax reconciliation. This written trail is practical evidence of the steps you took; it is not a substitute for the supplier’s filing or for the statutory ITC tests.
When GSTR-1A can fix a same-period omission
GSTR-1A is an optional facility for adding a missed record or amending an incorrect record for the same period. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1A FAQ states: “GSTR 1A shall be available to the taxpayer after filing of GSTR 1 or due date of GSTR 1, which ever is later.” The supplier must use it before filing GSTR-3B for that period, and the facility is available once for that period.
Conditions that must line up
- The supplier has filed GSTR-1, or the GSTR-1 due date has passed, whichever is later.
- The supplier’s GSTR-3B for that same period has not yet been filed.
- The supplier has not already used GSTR-1A for that period.
A record furnished through GSTR-1A is reflected in the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period. Therefore, adding an invoice in GSTR-1A does not normally make it appear in the GSTR-2B that covered the original purchase period. Plan the reconciliation and any credit decision around the later statement cycle.

How QRMP filing changes the check
A supplier using the Quarterly Return Filing and Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme may not report every month through the same route as a monthly filer. For the first two months of a quarter, the supplier may use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF). The quarterly GSTR-1 is the other relevant route. Ask the supplier whether the invoice was submitted through IFF or is scheduled for the quarterly GSTR-1, and verify the corresponding statement period before treating it as overdue.
The fact that a supplier is a QRMP filer does not remove the need to report the correct recipient GSTIN and invoice details. It changes where and when you should look for the filed document.
Understand what IMS does and does not show
IMS can display a supplier document when the supplier saves it. A saved document may therefore appear in IMS before it is part of your GSTR-2B. Under the revised advisory, only documents the supplier has actually filed are considered for GSTR-2B.
Your available IMS responses
- Accept: use this when the filed particulars agree with your records and the document is otherwise eligible for consideration.
- Reject: use this when the document does not belong to you or contains a fundamental mismatch that should not be accepted.
- Keep pending: use this when you need clarification or correction before deciding.
No action is deemed acceptance merely because GSTR-2B is generated. Your IMS response and your independent eligibility review remain separate from the supplier’s filing obligation. A saved-only record should not be treated as filed data for GSTR-2B purposes.

Recheck the statements after the supplier files
- Record the baseline. Save a copy of the invoice and note the period in which you expected it to be reported.
- Check all three views. Compare GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B and IMS with the invoice’s GSTIN, number, date, taxable value and tax.
- Obtain filing confirmation. Ask the supplier to confirm whether it filed GSTR-1, used GSTR-1A, submitted through IFF, or will include the item in a quarterly GSTR-1.
- Allow for the correct cycle. If GSTR-1A was used, look in the next tax period’s GSTR-2B. Do not expect a same-period reflection.
- Reconcile again. Match the filed record to your purchase register and preserve the statement showing the result.
GSTR-2B is static for its generation cycle. A later supplier filing does not rewrite an earlier statement; it is picked up in the applicable later cycle. Your accounting records should therefore retain both the original mismatch and the later correction.
Decide ITC separately from the reconciliation result
An absent GSTR-2B entry is a reconciliation fact, not automatically a final legal answer. Conversely, an entry in GSTR-2B does not remove every other eligibility condition. Before claiming or retaining ITC, assess the applicable requirements under section 16 and related provisions, including whether the supply was actually received, whether the document belongs to your registered business, whether the tax information is reliable, and whether any statutory restriction or time limit applies to the period.
Do not claim credit solely because:
- you hold a tax invoice;
- the supplier says a correction is planned;
- the document is visible as saved in IMS but has not been filed; or
- an older mismatch procedure appears to have helped another taxpayer.
For a material unresolved amount, obtain advice from a qualified GST professional who can examine the period, the filing history and the current law. The portal display helps with reconciliation; it is not a blanket authorization for every credit claim.

What to do when the supplier used the wrong GSTIN
A wrong recipient GSTIN is more serious than a typographical difference in an internal purchase register. Tell the supplier precisely which GSTIN was used and provide the correct registered details. Request the supplier’s amendment and keep evidence that the goods or services were supplied to your entity.

Do not rely on Circular 183/15/2022-GST as a general current-period exception. That circular addresses verification of differences between ITC claimed in GSTR-3B and ITC available in GSTR-2A for financial years 2017–18 and 2018–19. Its checks include the invoice or debit note, receipt of goods or services, and payment to the supplier, but its limited historical scope matters. It does not itself grant blanket authority to claim present-day ITC on an invoice that a supplier has not reported or has reported under another GSTIN.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.If the supplier still does not correct the invoice
Build a complete file before escalating the matter:
- the original invoice and purchase order;
- delivery records, service completion evidence or other proof of receipt;
- payment records showing the transaction;
- copies of GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B and relevant IMS screens;
- your written requests and the supplier’s replies or non-response; and
- the supplier’s GSTIN and the tax period involved.
Ask the supplier once more to identify whether the omission is caused by a missed return, a wrong-GSTIN entry, an unfiled saved document, or the QRMP timing. If the supplier cannot resolve a significant amount, take the evidence to a GST professional and ask for advice specific to that period. Avoid presenting a historical circular or a portal screenshot as conclusive proof without checking the current provisions and applicable deadlines.

Treating IMS visibility as filing
IMS may show a saved document, but saved-only data is not counted in GSTR-2B under the revised advisory. Confirm that the supplier actually filed the document.
Assuming the invoice date controls the statement period
The period in which a supplier files, and the route used, determine when the document is reflected. A GSTR-1A entry for the same period is expected in the next period’s GSTR-2B.
Using an old circular as a current entitlement
Circular 183/15/2022-GST is limited to FY 2017–18 and FY 2018–19 discrepancies. It should be treated as historical context unless a professional confirms a specific application.

Claiming credit before resolving identity and filing issues
First establish that the invoice belongs to your GSTIN, that the supplier has filed the record, and that all other ITC conditions and time limits are satisfied. A purchase entry in your books alone does not complete that analysis.
Quick Recap
Practical decision table
| Supplier situation | Recipient’s immediate task | Expected statement consequence |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 filed; GSTR-3B not filed; invoice omitted | Request use of GSTR-1A once for that period. | GSTR-2B reflection is in the next tax period. |
| QRMP supplier in the first two months of a quarter | Ask whether IFF was used and check the relevant cycle. | Timing follows the supplier’s IFF or quarterly reporting route. |
| Supplier saved an IMS document but has not filed it | Do not treat the saved record as GSTR-2B data; request filing. | Only a filed supplier document is considered for GSTR-2B. |
| Supplier reported another GSTIN | Request correction and preserve proof of the actual recipient. | Do not assume the other GSTIN entry supports your ITC. |
| Older FY 2017–18 or FY 2018–19 mismatch | Review the historical circular’s evidence framework with a professional. | Its procedure is not a blanket rule for current periods. |
