First identify what changed, then test whether your investment thesis still holds. Finally, judge the position against your portfolio concentration, time horizon, risk tolerance, cash needs, and the tax and trading consequences of any action. This framework helps you make a deliberate decision instead of reacting to a single price move.
Start with a pause and a fact check
Large daily moves create pressure to act immediately. Unless you have a specific, preplanned risk rule that requires action, take enough time to establish the facts. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission advises investors to step back and review their complete financial situation before making an investment decision: “Before you make any investing decision, sit down and take a fresh look at your entire financial situation.”

Write down the date of the decline, the approximate percentage and dollar change, and the price at which you noticed it. A price chart can show the move, but it cannot explain it. Do not treat the previous price as a guaranteed fair value or assume that a lower price automatically makes the shares cheap.

Determine what caused the fall
Company-specific developments
A decline can reflect information that directly changes the business. Examples include a disappointing earnings report, reduced guidance, a material legal or regulatory disclosure, a financing problem, a product or operational failure, or a change in competitive conditions. Read the original filing or company announcement where possible. Ask what the event changes: expected revenue, margins, cash flow, debt, dilution, or the company’s ability to execute.
Not every negative headline has the same financial importance. A one-time cost may be less significant than a persistent loss of customers. Conversely, a seemingly small disclosure can matter if it affects liquidity or a debt covenant. Identify the measurable assumption that changed rather than relying on the emotional force of the headline.
Sector or market-wide movement
If many companies in the same industry or the broad market fell together, the move may reflect interest-rate expectations, economic news, commodity prices, geopolitical risk, or a change in investor risk appetite. A market-wide move does not prove that your company is unaffected, but it changes the question: compare the stock’s performance and new information with relevant peers and the market before deciding that the company itself deteriorated.
Temporary trading noise
Short-term volatility can occur without a durable change in business value. That does not make every dip harmless. It means you should avoid assigning a permanent conclusion to a single session until you have checked the evidence and your original reasons for owning the shares.

- What business outcome did I expect, and what time period did that expectation cover?
- Which facts or assumptions were essential to that outcome?
- Has new information disproved, weakened, or merely delayed those assumptions?
- Would I make the same purchase today at the current price, using only information now available?
- What evidence would show that the thesis is wrong, and what evidence would show that the decline is mainly temporary volatility?
A lower share price is not itself evidence that the thesis is stronger. Recalculate the value of the business using current assumptions rather than anchoring on your purchase price or a former high. Your purchase price matters for your gain or loss and, potentially, taxes; it does not determine what the shares are worth today.
If the facts have materially changed and the original reason for owning the stock no longer applies, selling or reducing the position may be rational even after a large loss. If the business outlook remains consistent and the decline is primarily market-wide, holding may fit your plan. Neither conclusion follows from the percentage drop alone.

Calculate the stock’s current value as a percentage of your investable assets, not just the number of shares. Then look for indirect concentration: other companies in the same industry, funds with a large allocation to the same issuer, or income and employment that depend on the same economic conditions.
The SEC explains that diversification spreads money among different investments to reduce risk. It cannot prevent losses, but it can reduce the damage that one company’s problems cause to the rest of your finances. With an individual-stock holding, your outcome depends heavily on that company’s results.
| Question | What to calculate or inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direct exposure | Current market value of the stock divided by your investable portfolio | Shows how much a further company-specific decline could affect you |
| Related exposure | Holdings in the same sector, suppliers, customers, index funds, or employer stock | Reveals concentration that a single-ticker percentage can hide |
| Financial dependence | Whether wages, benefits, emergency savings, or near-term goals rely on the company or industry | Links portfolio risk to your ability to pay bills and meet goals |
| Rebalancing need | Difference between your current allocation and the limits in your written plan | Creates an objective reason to trim or add instead of reacting to fear |
A position can be a sound business investment and still be too large for your portfolio. Conversely, a small position can remain appropriate even when the price is volatile. The decision is about both expected prospects and the amount of risk you are carrying.

Check whether the risk still fits your life
Asset allocation should reflect both your time horizon and your risk tolerance. Investor.gov’s guidance explains that the mix of investments should account for when you need the money and how much loss you can withstand. Revisit those factors whenever your circumstances change.
Time until the money is needed
Money needed soon for rent, a house deposit, tuition, taxes, or an emergency generally has less capacity for a volatile individual stock than money earmarked for a distant goal. A shorter horizon gives you less time to recover from an unfavorable outcome and may justify reducing exposure even if your long-term view of the company is positive.
Capacity and willingness to bear loss
Risk capacity is your financial ability to absorb a loss; risk tolerance is your willingness to endure it without abandoning your plan. Consider job stability, debt payments, emergency reserves, dependents, insurance, and other obligations. A person may be psychologically comfortable with volatility but financially unable to withstand a large additional loss, or financially able to bear it but unwilling to do so. Either change can justify a different allocation.
Cash needs and competing uses
Compare holding the stock with the alternatives for the same money. If you need cash, selling part of the position may be preferable to borrowing or missing a goal. If you do not need the money and the position remains within your limits, forced action may be unnecessary. Make the comparison using current opportunities and risks, not just the stock’s former price.
Compare hold, trim, sell, and add using one framework
Evaluate every option on the same five axes: the company’s prospects, position concentration, time and loss capacity, effect on the broader portfolio, and transaction or tax consequences.

| Action | When it may fit | Questions to answer first | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold | The original thesis remains credible, the allocation is acceptable, and you do not need the cash soon | What evidence would invalidate the thesis? Can you tolerate another decline? | Continuing to own a deteriorating business or an oversized position |
| Trim | The company may still fit, but the position or correlated exposure is too large for your plan | What target allocation and rebalancing rule will you use? | Reducing exposure without a clear rule and then reversing the decision emotionally |
| Sell | The thesis is broken, the risk no longer fits your circumstances, or the cash has a higher-priority use | What order type, tax effect, and replacement plan apply? | Acting on panic, accepting avoidable execution costs, or creating an unintended tax result |
| Add | You would choose the stock as a new investment today and it remains within your risk limits | Why is the current price attractive relative to alternatives? What is your maximum allocation? | Averaging down solely because the price fell, increasing concentration in a weakening company |
Adding after a decline is a new investment decision. Treat the cash as if it were currently uninvested: compare the stock with diversified alternatives, assess the updated thesis, and set a position limit before placing an order. Do not let the desire to recover a paper loss determine the amount you invest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you sell, understand order mechanics
Your broker’s order ticket should identify the order type, duration, and any conditions. Read those fields before submitting.
Market and stop orders
A stop order becomes a market order once the stop price is reached. The execution price can therefore differ significantly from the stop price, particularly in a fast-moving or thinly traded market. The SEC’s investor bulletin explains this risk in its discussion of stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders: Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders. A stop price is not a guaranteed sale price.
Stop-limit orders
A stop-limit order activates a limit order after the stop is reached. It constrains the minimum price you will accept, but the order may not execute if the market moves past your limit. You must choose which risk matters more: receiving an uncertain execution price or not selling at all.
Practical order checklist
- Confirm the ticker, number of shares, account, and whether you are selling all or part of the position.
- Select the order type and read the broker’s explanation of trigger and limit prices.
- Check the order duration and any extended-hours setting; prices and liquidity can differ outside regular trading.
- Review the estimated proceeds, fees, and tax-lot selection if your account provides those choices.
- Save the confirmation and verify the fill rather than assuming a submitted order executed.
Consider U.S. federal tax effects before realizing a loss
For U.S. taxpayers, selling below your tax basis can create a capital loss, but the result depends on your complete tax situation and the relevant tax year. IRS Publication 550 (2025) describes the wash-sale rule: a loss may be disallowed when you acquire substantially identical stock or securities within 30 days before or after the loss sale. Certain acquisitions in an IRA can also matter. The rule applies to the transaction pattern, not merely to whether you immediately buy the same ticker in the same brokerage account.

Keep records of purchase dates, adjusted basis, sales, dividends, reinvestments, and purchases in other accounts. If you are considering a replacement investment, determine whether it could be substantially identical and whether the holding period around the sale creates a wash-sale issue. Rules can change, and state taxes or special circumstances may differ, so review the current guidance for the applicable year and consult a qualified tax professional when the amount is significant or your accounts are complex. The IRS reference is Publication 550 (2025), Investment Income and Expenses.
Use a written decision record
Before acting, record the facts and the rule you are applying. A one-page note can prevent a later price move from rewriting your memory of why you made the decision.
- Date, price change, and information verified from filings or reliable market sources.
- Original thesis, assumptions that remain valid, and assumptions that changed.
- Current position percentage, related exposures, and your maximum acceptable allocation.
- Goal, time horizon, cash needs, risk capacity, and risk tolerance.
- Chosen action, order type, tax-lot approach, and the conditions that would trigger a review.
Set a review date that matches the business and your plan rather than checking the quote every few minutes. A written threshold—such as a change in a fundamental assumption or a portfolio allocation limit—is more useful than an arbitrary percentage loss that ignores context.

When outside advice may help
Consider an independent, qualified financial adviser if one stock represents a large share of your assets, the holding is tied to your employer or compensation, you have several taxable and retirement accounts, or you cannot reconcile the decision with your financial plan. Ask how the adviser is paid, what services are included, and whether the advice covers your complete portfolio. Professional input should clarify your choices, not replace your understanding of the risks.
Reliable guidance for the decision
- SEC: Things to Consider Before You Make Investing Decisions—a reminder to review your entire financial situation before acting.
- Investor.gov: Asset Allocation and Diversification—explains how time horizon and risk tolerance affect allocation and why diversification matters.
- Investor.gov: Introduction to Investing—covers diversification and the risks of concentrating in one company.
- Investor.gov: Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders—describes execution and non-execution risks for these orders; the bulletin was updated August 18, 2026.
The appropriate response to a sharp fall is the one supported by current facts, a still-valid or clearly invalidated thesis, a portfolio allocation you can live with, and a plan that accounts for liquidity, order execution, and taxes. A price decline is the starting point for that review—not the answer by itself.
