When a same-day order is late, missing, or delivered to the wrong place, start in the app or account where you paid: open the order, capture its status and delivery estimate, check any photo or map pin, then use that order’s Help or customer-care flow. Report the exact problem—late, never arrived, wrong address, missing item, or incorrect item—and save the case number and chat transcript. Refunds, credits, replacements, redelivery, deadlines, and waiting periods depend on the service and order type; the U.S. policies below are examples from official help pages reviewed October 13, 2026, not a universal consumer-rights rule.
Do these six things first
- Open the original order. Use the retailer, grocery, restaurant, or delivery app account that took your payment. Record the current status, promised window, revised estimate, delivery company, and any delay message. Take screenshots before the status changes.
- Check whether the delivery window actually ended. A moving estimate may mean the order is delayed rather than lost. Read carrier emails and in-app notices. Do not apply one platform’s waiting rule to every same-day order.
- If the window passed, use the order-specific support flow. Choose the closest issue category instead of sending a general message. The order record gives support the payment, address, items, and courier information needed to investigate.
- If it says delivered, verify the drop-off. Review the delivery photo or proof, compare the doorway and surroundings, look at safe places around your property, and confirm the saved address and map pin.
- Submit focused evidence. Attach the status screenshot, delivery photo, receipt, and photos of what actually arrived when relevant. Describe the time, location, and exact missing or incorrect items.
- Request a practical remedy and preserve the record. Ask whether a refund, credit, replacement, redelivery, or rescheduled delivery is available. Save the confirmation, case number, chat transcript, and any promised date. If the promise is missed, reply in the same order thread.
Identify which delivery problem you have
The order is late but still in transit
Compare the promised window with the latest estimate and read every notification. A delay can result from high order volume, shopper availability, traffic, weather, or a handoff between delivery companies. Target Help gives one example: “Some orders may be delayed due to high volume and shopper availability.” That explanation does not tell you when your particular order will arrive, so use the live order record rather than assuming the original time is still valid.

When a platform offers a new window, decide whether the remaining wait still works for you. If the order contains medicine, perishable food, or an event-critical item, tell support why timing matters. Do not mark an order as never arrived while it is plainly moving unless the support flow instructs you to; an inaccurate category can slow the review.
The status says delivered, but nothing is there
First inspect the proof-of-delivery image, delivery notes, and map location. Check side doors, porches, mailrooms, building lobbies, reception desks, parcel lockers, and nearby units permitted by your building’s rules. Ask household members or a concierge whether someone accepted it. Compare the pictured entrance, doormat, railing, or landscaping with your property.

Verify the address saved on the order and the map pin separately. A correctly typed street address can still have a misplaced pin, especially in apartment complexes, new developments, or buildings with multiple entrances. If the image clearly shows another home, report a possible misdelivery rather than a simple theft. If the image matches your property but the package is absent, report that it was marked delivered and cannot be located; let the platform determine whether to contact the courier.
Do not confuse parcel-shipping advice with store-delivery advice. For example, Walmart’s two-business-day guidance applies to shipped packages marked delivered, while its separate store-delivery instructions direct customers to check the photo and contact support when the order cannot be found.
The courier went to the wrong address
Use the order’s “wrong address,” “delivered elsewhere,” or closest available issue category. State both the address shown on your confirmation and the place shown in the photo or map. Include a screenshot of the saved address and pin, but redact unrelated personal information before sharing images publicly.

If you recognize the neighboring address, do not enter private property or confront a resident. Ask the platform to arrange retrieval or redelivery. A courier’s proof photo is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that the order can be recovered.
Only some items are missing or the contents are wrong
Separate a missing-item claim from a wholly wrong-order claim. List each absent item, quantity, substitution, damage, or incorrect product and photograph the receipt and received items. If the entire order belongs to someone else, use the platform’s “order never arrived” or wrong-order path when that is what its instructions require; DoorDash, for example, tells customers to report a wholly wrong order as an order-never-arrived issue rather than as one missing item.
Provider workflows and published time limits
The following are operational instructions published by the named services. They are not a ranking of which company is most generous, and eligibility can depend on location, seller, item, payment method, and the facts of the order.

How to document the claim so it can be reviewed
Capture the order record
Save the order number, merchant, items, total, delivery fee, tip, taxes, promised window, current status, and payment method. A screenshot should include the date and time where possible. If the estimate changes, capture the new estimate as well as the original promise.
Capture location and contents evidence
- For a marked-delivered order, save the delivery photo, map view, and delivery notes.
- For a wrong-address report, save the address and pin shown at checkout and identify how the photo differs.
- For missing or incorrect contents, photograph the package, labels, receipt, and every item received before discarding packaging.
- For food or other perishables, photograph condition and packaging promptly; avoid claims about safety that you cannot establish.
Send only evidence relevant to the order. Redact payment-card numbers, unrelated conversations, and other people’s personal information. Keep originals in case support asks for a clearer image.
Refunds, credits, replacements, and fees
A remedy is a request, not an automatic entitlement under the provider pages reviewed. Depending on eligibility and circumstances, support may offer a full or partial refund, account credit, replacement, redelivery, or a new delivery time. The amount can depend on whether the entire order failed, one item was missing, an item was substituted, or the order was merely late.

Ask specifically how delivery fees and tips will be handled. Walmart’s published store-delivery guidance says that when a customer switches a delayed order to pickup, the delivery fee and tip are refunded. That statement does not establish the policy for every late or missing Walmart order, nor for other services. Keep the original receipt and check the payment account for the promised credit rather than assuming a support message means the money has posted.
If a replacement is offered, confirm whether the original order is canceled, whether a second authorization will appear, and what happens if the replacement is unavailable. For a credit, ask for its amount, expiration, and whether it returns to the original payment method or stays in the platform account.
Deadlines and waiting periods you should not mix up
- Amazon: its general late-package page says to allow 48 hours after the estimated date and contact Amazon within 30 days for Amazon-shipped orders. Third-party shipped orders follow the seller route, and the guidance is not a universal same-day rule.
- Instacart: the report-a-problem page says to report within three days after pickup or delivery.
- Target Same Day Delivery: eligible issue requests through “Fix an issue” begin the day after pickup or delivery.
- Walmart: the two-business-day wait concerns shipped packages marked delivered, not its store-delivery instructions.
If your service is not listed, open its current help page from the order itself. A deadline for one platform cannot safely be borrowed for another.

What to do when support denies or closes the claim
Reopen the same order thread
Reply to the existing case or chat instead of opening disconnected tickets. State the case number, the original report date, the unresolved fact, and the remedy still requested. Attach only new or clearer evidence and quote the promise that was not fulfilled.
Check the transaction, not just the app balance
Look at your card, bank, or digital-wallet activity for a pending reversal, completed refund, or duplicate authorization. A platform credit may not reduce the card charge. If a promised refund is absent after the stated processing period, ask support to confirm the refund reference or transaction date.
Escalate carefully
The provider pages reviewed do not establish one common escalation route. Follow the next option shown in the order’s current support flow, retain all records, and explain the financial impact factually. If you paid with a card and believe a charge is genuinely incorrect, review your issuer’s dispute process and deadlines; a card dispute should not be used to bypass a valid delivery investigation.

Practical choices when the order is urgently needed
Before accepting a replacement or reordering, compare the cost and timing. A second purchase can create a duplicate charge if the first order later arrives or is refunded. Ask support whether to refuse, return, or keep a late shipment and whether a replacement order cancels the original. For perishable goods, prioritize safety and follow the merchant’s instructions rather than consuming items that arrived outside safe conditions.
When a delayed order can be converted to pickup, calculate transportation cost and time against the delivery fee and tip. Walmart’s published example refunds those two charges after pickup, but other services may not. Get the proposed adjustment in writing in the order thread before changing fulfillment when possible.
What to record for future orders
- The exact delivery window and any later change.
- The address text and map pin displayed at checkout.
- The courier name, tracking number, and delivery photo.
- The support case number, promised remedy, and refund or credit date.
These records make a later claim faster without assuming that every future order follows the same policy. Provider procedures and time limits can change, and they may vary by region, seller, item, and delivery partner.
