What to Do When a Long-Term Stock Investment Drops Sharply

Do not make an all-or-nothing decision solely because the price fell. First determine what caused the decline, whether the facts behind your original investment case still hold, when you need the money, and how large the position is in your overall portfolio. Then make any change—holding, selling, rebalancing, or buying more—according to that plan, after considering taxes, trading costs, and your ability to absorb further losses.

This is general U.S.-oriented investor education, not individualized investment or tax advice. The right action can differ with the security, account type, cost basis, goals, liquidity needs, time horizon, and risk tolerance.

Start with a pause, not a prediction

A sharp drop is information, but it is not by itself a complete diagnosis. A stock can fall because the entire market is under pressure, because the company reported new information, because expectations were too high, or because investors are reacting to economic or political developments. The price move alone cannot tell you whether the original investment case is intact.

Investor.gov explains that stock prices are affected by company decisions, products and demand, economic conditions, and broader market events. Stocks can lose value, and there is no guarantee that an individual company will recover or prosper. A long holding period does not turn a single-company investment into a safe one.

Jumping totally out of the market to escape fear can create a second decision problem: when, and under what conditions, would you get back in? SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance Director Lori Schock wrote in an official-capacity Investor.gov article, “Jumping totally out of the market and trying to time the market may not be the best long-term investment strategy.” The article also notes that the statement is made in her official capacity and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Commission, Commissioners, or other staff. That caution does not mean you must hold every stock; it means a rash exit is not a substitute for reviewing the facts and your plan.

Step 1: Identify what actually triggered the drop

Broad-market decline

Compare the stock’s move with the relevant market and industry over the same period. If many unrelated companies fell together, the decline may reflect changing interest rates, economic expectations, geopolitical events, or a general shift in risk appetite. A market-wide move can still expose an allocation that is too aggressive for your circumstances, but it is different from a breakdown in one company’s operations.

Company-specific development

Look for current, primary information: earnings releases, regulatory filings, guidance changes, debt or liquidity disclosures, executive changes, product announcements, and material legal or regulatory news. Reliable reporting can help provide context, but headlines and social-media commentary are not a substitute for the company’s disclosures. Ask whether the new information changes revenue prospects, competitive position, balance-sheet strength, governance, or the assumptions you used when buying.

Personal or account change

Sometimes the investment has not changed, but your situation has. A job loss, approaching tuition bill, home purchase, medical expense, or a change in retirement date can shorten your practical time horizon. In that case, the relevant question is not simply whether the stock might recover; it is whether you can afford to wait without selling at an inconvenient time.

A frightening account balance

Seeing a large dollar loss can make a normal percentage fluctuation feel like an emergency. Write down the percentage decline, the position’s current share of your assets, and the date the money is needed. Separating those facts from the immediate emotion helps prevent an automatic “sell everything” or “buy everything” response.

Step 2: Revisit the original investment thesis

Write the reasons you originally owned the stock in plain language. Examples might include expected long-term demand, a durable competitive advantage, a manageable debt load, or a valuation you believed was reasonable. For each reason, mark it as supported, weakened, or disproved by current facts.

  • Supported: Recent information is consistent with the assumptions you made, even if the price is lower.
  • Weakened: The company still has a plausible path, but growth, margins, financing, competition, or execution is materially less attractive.
  • Disproved: A central assumption is no longer true, or the company faces a risk you did not accept when you bought.

This exercise is not a forecast. Even a well-supported thesis can be wrong, and a company with improving results can have a stock that falls further. The purpose is to make the decision depend on current evidence rather than on the purchase price or the hope of getting back to breakeven.

Step 3: Match the investment to the goal and time horizon

Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance links risk to when the money will be needed and to your ability and willingness to tolerate loss. A genuinely long horizon can provide more time to live through volatility, but it does not guarantee recovery. Money needed soon may not have time to recover from a severe decline.

The SEC’s risk-tolerance guidance identifies risky investments as unsuitable for short-term goals of five years or less. Treat five years as a practical warning point, not as a promise that a five-year investment will be safe. If a payment is due within that period, consider whether the stock belongs in the money reserved for it at all.

Questions to answer before changing the position

  • What specific goal is this money meant to fund?
  • On what date, or within what range, might you need it?
  • Could you meet that need if the stock fell substantially again?
  • Has your income, debt, health, family situation, or retirement date changed?
  • Would a further loss cause you to abandon your broader plan?

If your circumstances changed, updating the allocation can be appropriate even when the company’s business case has not changed. A portfolio that fit a 30-year-old saving for retirement may not fit someone drawing on the money next year.

Step 4: Measure concentration across the whole portfolio

Review the stock as a percentage of your total financial assets, not just as a percentage of the brokerage account. Include retirement accounts, cash, bonds, funds, and other investments. A single-company holding carries company-specific risk that a diversified portfolio spreads across many issuers and asset classes.

Diversification can reduce the damage caused by one investment, but it cannot eliminate investment risk or guarantee a profit. The SEC’s Stocks FAQ notes that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years; the page does not identify a publication year for that statistic, so it should not be treated as a newly measured 2026 figure.

Signals that concentration deserves attention

  • The position is much larger than your written target because it appreciated in the past or because other holdings fell.
  • Your employment income, stock options, or pension already depend on the same company or industry.
  • A single decline would jeopardize a near-term goal.
  • You cannot explain what percentage loss you could tolerate without changing plans.

These signals do not dictate a sale. They indicate that the decision should include portfolio construction, not just a view about the next price move.

Hold, sell, or rebalance? Compare the choices deliberately

Choice When it may fit Questions and costs to check
Hold The original thesis remains supported, the position fits your target allocation, and you can wait without using the money. What evidence would show the thesis is wrong? Can you tolerate another substantial decline?
Sell all or part The thesis is broken, the goal or time horizon changed, or the position is too concentrated for your risk capacity. Would selling lock in a loss? What are commissions, spreads, taxes, and the plan for the proceeds?
Rebalance The holding or stock allocation has moved away from a deliberate target. Can new contributions restore the target with fewer tax consequences? How often will you review it?
Buy more Only when you would choose the investment at today’s price, after reassessing the thesis, concentration, and downside capacity. Are you averaging down merely to lower the cost basis? Would the purchase leave the portfolio dangerously concentrated?

Investor.gov says rebalancing can be based on a calendar interval or a pre-set allocation threshold and generally works best relatively infrequently. It does not prescribe one universal schedule or threshold. Choose a method you can follow consistently rather than reacting to every daily move.

How to rebalance without making the tax bill a surprise

Use new contributions first when practical

Directing future deposits toward underweighted holdings can gradually restore an allocation without selling the overweight position. This may take longer, so compare the time required with the size of the concentration and the urgency of your goal.

Sell an overweight holding when the plan requires it

A sale can restore the target immediately, but review transaction fees, bid-ask spreads, and the tax result before submitting it. In a taxable account, the gain or loss depends on your tax lots and cost basis. In a retirement account, the tax treatment and trading rules differ from a taxable account.

Do not let the purchase price control the decision

“I will sell when it gets back to what I paid” is an emotional reference point, not an allocation rule. The relevant comparison is the investment’s current prospects with the alternatives available now, after taxes and costs.

Tax-loss selling and the U.S. wash-sale rule

In a U.S. taxable account, selling an investment for a loss can have tax consequences, but the loss may be deferred if the wash-sale rule applies. IRS Publication 550 (2025) says a wash sale can occur when substantially identical securities are acquired within 30 days before or after the loss sale. The discussion also covers certain acquisitions in an IRA or Roth IRA.

“Substantially identical” is a facts-and-circumstances concept; it should not be reduced to a universal rule that every similar fund or security is either allowed or prohibited. Track purchases across accounts, including automatic reinvestments, and retain trade confirmations. Because tax rules and personal circumstances vary, consider qualified tax advice before harvesting a loss, especially when replacing the holding or using an IRA.

Should you buy more while the stock is down?

A lower price is not proof of a bargain. Buy more only if you would make the purchase today without relying on the old price, and only after checking the company’s current facts, your target allocation, liquidity needs, and ability to withstand another decline.

Ask three questions:

  1. Would I buy this company for the first time today? If not, averaging down may simply increase exposure to a thesis you no longer believe.
  2. What would the position become after the purchase? Calculate its share of total assets and of your stock allocation.
  3. What is the money’s job? Do not use cash reserved for an emergency or a near-term bill to speculate on a recovery.

Periodic investing can reduce the pressure to choose one perfect entry date, but it does not remove the risk of loss. A schedule should be tied to your plan and cash flow, not to a promise that the stock will bounce back.

Protect the cash-flow side of the decision

A forced sale is more likely when an unexpected expense arrives and there is no cash buffer. The SEC’s World Investor Week 2026 bulletin gives three to six months of living expenses as an example emergency-savings target. It is a general planning example, not a requirement for every household; the appropriate amount depends on income stability, dependents, insurance, debt, and access to other resources.

The same bulletin uses credit-card interest of as much as 18 percent or more as a general example of high-cost debt. That figure is not an investment return or a current quote for every cardholder. Paying down expensive revolving debt and building cash reserves can improve the odds that you will not have to liquidate a falling investment solely to cover predictable or emergency spending.

A practical checklist for the next 48 hours and the next review

Immediately

  1. Record the percentage decline and the position’s percentage of total assets.
  2. Identify whether the trigger appears broad-market, company-specific, personal, or unclear.
  3. Read the company’s latest official disclosures before relying on commentary.
  4. Pause automatic purchases if they are causing unintended concentration, but do not make a permanent change solely from panic.

At a scheduled review

  1. Rewrite the investment thesis using current facts and label each assumption supported, weakened, or disproved.
  2. Match the holding to the goal’s date, your liquidity needs, and your risk tolerance.
  3. Compare the entire portfolio with its intended allocation.
  4. Choose hold, partial sale, full sale, or a contribution-based rebalance; document the reason and the condition that would cause a future review.
  5. Before any taxable sale, calculate fees, tax lots, and possible wash-sale consequences.

There is no universal rule that a sharply falling stock should be held, sold, or bought. A disciplined decision connects current company facts, portfolio concentration, time horizon, cash needs, and tax consequences. That process is more reliable than treating either a rebound or a further collapse as certain.
