First separate the price move from its cause. Then re-test the company thesis, check how large the position is in your portfolio, revisit when you need the money, and assess whether you can tolerate another loss. Only after that review should you decide whether staying invested, reducing the position, or changing your allocation fits your plan.
No company, ticker, decline percentage, valuation, tax situation, portfolio, or personal goal is specified here, so no responsible general article can determine the right trade for you. The process below is designed to make the decision deliberate rather than reactive.

Start with a pause and a written plan
Volatility can make an immediate decision feel urgent. Lori Schock, former Director of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, advises investors: “But it is important not to make any rash decisions during volatile markets.” A pause does not mean ignoring important news; it gives you time to distinguish new information from fear, headlines, and normal market repricing.

- Record the facts. Note the date, the size of the decline, the time period over which it occurred, and any company announcement or market event you know about. Avoid treating a single intraday quote as a complete explanation.
- Write the original reason you bought. State the expected growth driver, the evidence you relied on, the time horizon, and the conditions that would prove the thesis wrong.
- Set a review window. Decide when you will examine filings, earnings information, and portfolio exposure. A defined review is more useful than repeatedly refreshing the price.
- Do not increase risk while emotional. Adding shares, selling everything, or using complex orders before you understand the move can turn uncertainty into a larger, harder-to-reverse decision.
This process is not a promise that a falling stock will recover. It is a way to make the next action depend on evidence and your plan instead of the size of the red number.

Find out what may have caused the decline
A stock price reflects changing expectations. Investor.gov identifies several influences, including company management, product strength, consumer demand, economic changes, labor and supply-chain costs, and investor preferences. A sharp decline can involve one of these factors or several at once. The price move alone cannot identify which explanation applies.
Company-specific developments
Look for information that changes the economics of the business: weaker sales or user growth, lower margins, delayed products, lost customers, new competition, management departures, financing needs, regulatory action, or an accounting correction. Compare the new information with the assumptions in your original thesis. A disappointing quarter is not automatically a broken thesis, but a change to the company’s durable growth driver may be.
Broad market and economic conditions
Growth companies are often valued on profits expected years in the future. Changes in interest rates, economic growth, credit conditions, labor costs, or supply constraints can reduce those estimates even when the company has not announced a new problem. A broad market sell-off can also push down many unrelated stocks at the same time.
Investor preferences and short-term trading
Investors may rotate between sectors, favor profitable companies over companies reinvesting for growth, or react to positioning and sentiment. Short-term price noise can be significant, particularly around earnings, guidance, analyst changes, or index rebalancing. That does not make the move irrelevant; it means you should identify whether expectations about the business changed or whether the price moved faster than the underlying facts.
A practical evidence check
- Read the company’s latest results and management guidance rather than relying only on a headline.
- Compare the company’s operational change with the movement of its industry and the wider market.
- Separate a one-time event from a recurring deterioration in demand, costs, financing, or execution.
- Write down what information would confirm or disprove each possible explanation.
If you cannot identify a cause with reliable information, label the situation uncertain. Uncertainty is a reason to gather facts or reduce exposure to a level you can tolerate, not a reason to invent a confident forecast.

Re-test the investment thesis
The central question is not “How far has the stock fallen?” It is “Do the reasons I owned it still hold, at a risk and price I can accept?” Re-read your purchase notes, if you have them, and answer these questions in writing:
- Is the product or service still solving the problem you expected it to solve?
- Are customers, revenue, margins, cash generation, or other indicators moving in the direction your thesis required?
- Has management changed its strategy, spending, financing, or stated priorities?
- Is the original growth opportunity smaller, slower, or more competitive than you assumed?
- What specific development would make you sell even if the price later recovered?
Distinguish a thesis change from a price change. If the business facts remain consistent but the market is repricing risk, the decision may be different from a case where demand, economics, or execution has materially worsened. Conversely, a lower price does not repair a permanently weaker business.
Check concentration and intended allocation
A single-company position makes your results depend heavily on that company. Measure the position as a percentage of your investable portfolio, not just by the number of shares or the dollar loss. Include other holdings that are exposed to the same industry, customer, geography, or economic factor.
When concentration is the main problem
If the position has grown beyond the allocation you intended, or the decline has made your portfolio risk higher than you can bear, reducing it can be an allocation decision even when your company thesis remains positive. You are not required to make a binary choice between owning the entire position and owning none of it.
Diversification and rebalancing
Diversification can reduce reliance on one holding, although a narrowly focused mutual fund or exchange-traded fund may not be diversified simply because it is a fund. Rebalancing restores the mix and risk level set by your plan: you sell or buy holdings as needed to return toward target percentages. Rebalancing is a portfolio discipline, not a prediction that the stock will fall further or rebound.

Write down your target allocation and compare it with the current one. If you have no target, establish a risk level and a maximum position size before making a new trade. The appropriate limits depend on your circumstances; a general percentage cannot account for every investor.

Match the decision to when you need the money
Investor.gov explains that a longer time horizon can make volatile investments more tolerable, while investors with short-term goals may prefer less volatile holdings. Your horizon is the date the money must be available, not the date you hope the stock recovers.
Money needed soon
If the shares fund tuition, a home purchase, an emergency reserve, or another near-term obligation, a large further decline could force a sale at an unfavorable time. Reassess whether this money belongs in a volatile single stock at all. Protecting a required cash need can outweigh the possibility of a later recovery.
Money invested for a distant goal
A long horizon gives you more time to withstand fluctuations, but it does not make a weak company safe. You still need a thesis that remains credible, a position size you can live with, and the ability to meet obligations without selling under pressure.
Ability versus willingness to take risk
Ability to bear loss depends on income stability, emergency savings, debt, and other resources. Willingness is your emotional capacity to remain invested through further declines. A portfolio is mismatched if either one is lower than the risk implied by the holding.

Compare the main choices without turning them into predictions
The following framework compares actions by the questions that matter. It does not select a trade for an unnamed investor.

Before choosing, write one sentence beginning “I am taking this action because…” If the sentence contains only “the stock fell” or “it will surely rebound,” the analysis is incomplete.

Order types control execution mechanics; they do not guarantee a profitable outcome or protect you from every loss. Brokers differ in available order types, trigger standards, trading hours, and handling of gaps, so read your broker’s current rules.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” Decide whether execution certainty or price control matters more for your situation, and understand that a stop-limit order trades the risk of a poor fill for the risk of no fill.
Use a repeatable review checklist
- Write the original ownership thesis and the facts that would invalidate it.
- List new company information and classify each item as positive, negative, one-time, recurring, or unknown.
- Compare the company’s move with its industry and the broader market to separate specific from general pressure.
- Calculate the stock’s current portfolio share and include overlapping exposures.
- Check your target allocation and decide whether rebalancing is required by your plan.
- Identify the goal date and the amount of cash you must have available before then.
- Assess both your financial ability and your willingness to withstand another decline.
- Choose an action and write the condition that would make you review it again.
- If trading, confirm the order type, trigger rules, limit, trading session, and cancellation policy with your broker.
- Keep a dated record of the facts and reasoning so a later price move does not rewrite your memory of the decision.
Common mistakes after a sharp drop
Anchoring to the purchase price
Your entry price is not a measure of the company’s value or a reason to hold. Ask whether you would buy the same position today, at its current size, based on current facts.

Assuming a historical average guarantees recovery
Investor.gov gives a broad historical estimate of 7–10% annual returns for diversified U.S. stock investments. That estimate is based on historic averages; it is not a forecast, guarantee, or expected return for an individual growth stock. It cannot establish that a particular company will recover.
Confusing diversification with safety
Owning several funds does not automatically diversify you if they hold the same narrow industry or companies. Inspect the underlying exposures.
Using an order type you do not understand
A stop order can execute far from its trigger, while a stop-limit order can remain unfilled. Treat the choice as an execution decision and verify the broker’s rules before submitting it.
When outside help may be useful
If the decision depends on circumstances you cannot evaluate—such as an unfamiliar company’s filings, a complex portfolio, or a goal that cannot tolerate a large loss—Investor.gov says you may consult a financial professional. Ask how the professional is paid, what services are included, and what fees apply. No referral, firm, or individualized recommendation is established by the general guidance here.
The durable answer to a sharp decline is a documented process: investigate the cause, test the thesis, restore an appropriate allocation, match risk to the money’s time horizon, and use orders only after understanding their execution limits. The price movement supplies a prompt to review your plan; it does not supply the plan itself.
