Do not sell, hold, or buy more solely because the share price fell. First determine why it fell, whether the company’s reported facts still support your original investment thesis, and whether the position still fits your portfolio, time horizon, and ability to tolerate loss.
A lower quote is evidence of a price change, not proof that the business is broken or that the shares are cheap. Use a documented review process, then make a decision you can explain without relying on a headline, chart pattern, social-media post, or analyst call.

A price drop does not answer the decision for you
Stocks can lose value, and selling below your purchase price turns the decline into a realized loss. Investor.gov notes that there is no guarantee a company will grow and that stock prices can fluctuate because of company-specific developments and external forces. A falling price therefore tells you what the market is paying now; it does not, by itself, tell you what the business is worth or what you should do next.

Expectations for future revenue, profits, interest rates, competition and market sentiment can all change quickly. A decline may reflect deteriorating business conditions, a disappointing forecast, a broad market sell-off, or a repricing of optimistic expectations even when the company has not issued damaging news.

There is no universal percentage loss that automatically means “sell,” “hold” or “buy.” The appropriate response depends on evidence about the company and on your own financial plan.
Use this six-step review before trading
1. Pause and define what happened
Record the size and timing of the decline, then identify the event that may have caused it. Check the company’s investor-relations announcements, its latest earnings release, new quarterly or annual filing, sector developments and the performance of the broader market. A one-day move is often difficult to interpret in isolation. Waiting long enough to gather facts can prevent an emotional decision that conflicts with a long-term strategy.

- Did the decline follow earnings, guidance, a product update, a regulatory event, a financing announcement or a management change?
- Did the price move while the market was open on a rumor, or after a verified filing?
Do not assume that the largest headline is the complete explanation. Note what is confirmed and what is speculation.
2. Reconstruct the original investment thesis
Write down, in a few concrete claims, why you bought. Examples include expected demand growth, expanding margins, a competitive advantage, recurring revenue, a product milestone or a particular route to profitability. Then label each claim as unchanged, weakened, disproved or not yet testable.

Separate business facts from the purchase price. “I bought at a higher price” is a description of your cost basis, not evidence that the shares should recover. Likewise, comments from an analyst or online forum are opinions, not a substitute for checking the company’s disclosures.
The SEC advises investors to do their own work and says: “We advise people to never rely solely on an analyst’s recommendation when deciding whether to buy, hold, or sell a stock.”
3. Compare the latest company reports with your thesis
Read the most recent quarterly and annual reports filed with the SEC. Focus on the sections that can change the case you originally made for owning the shares:
- Revenue, unit volume and customer trends relative to the growth you expected.
- Gross and operating margins, cash use and the path to sustainable profitability.
- Balance-sheet strength, debt maturities, liquidity and any new share issuance that could dilute owners.
- Management’s updated outlook and the assumptions behind it.
- Risk factors, legal matters, dependence on a customer or supplier, and competitive pressure.
Compare the new information with earlier reports rather than judging the company from one quarter or one price candle. A missed forecast may be temporary, or it may expose a structural problem. The report’s explanation, supporting numbers and updated risks matter more than the fact that the stock chart is red.
4. Measure the position in your whole portfolio
Calculate what share of your investable assets the company represents now, not only what it represented when you bought it. A stock can become an outsized position after a rally, or a smaller position after a decline, and either change can affect your risk more than the latest headline.

Check whether you are also concentrated in the same industry, economic theme, geography or factor through other holdings. Diversification can offset some of the risks of owning one company, although it cannot eliminate investment risk. Investor.gov says allocation should reflect your time horizon and tolerance for potential loss; those are personal decisions, not market-wide rules.

Use the evidence to choose among continuing to hold, reducing or exiting, and making a new purchase. Treat the choice as a portfolio decision, not as a contest to get back to your entry price.

These are conditional applications of investor-education and risk guidance, not recommendations for a particular security. The cited authorities do not establish a single loss threshold that triggers a trade.
6. Check trading costs and tax consequences
Before placing an order, check commissions or other transaction charges, bid-ask spreads and any account restrictions. Investor.gov notes that rebalancing can create transaction fees or tax consequences. The result depends on your account type, holding period, gains and losses, tax rules and jurisdiction, so a general article cannot calculate your outcome. Confirm the details with current tax information or a qualified professional before acting.
How to tell a damaged thesis from ordinary volatility
Signals that deserve deeper investigation
Examples of potentially material changes include a sustained deterioration in demand, a product or milestone failure central to your thesis, a loss of a competitive advantage, worsening liquidity, unexpected dilution, an unfavorable regulatory development or guidance that removes the assumptions supporting your valuation. None is an automatic sell signal; each requires reading the company’s explanation and considering how much of the original case remains intact.

Events that may not change the long-term case
A broad market decline, a sector-wide valuation reset, a short-term earnings timing issue or a temporary cost increase may affect the quote without invalidating the business plan. That conclusion is justified only if the company’s filings and operating data support it. Calling every decline “noise” is as dangerous as treating every decline as proof of failure.
Should you average down?
A lower price can make an additional purchase look attractive because it reduces your average cost. That arithmetic does not establish that the investment is better. The cited investor guidance does not endorse averaging down in an individual stock.
Evaluate an additional purchase as if you held no shares. Recheck the business evidence, valuation assumptions, downside you can withstand and the resulting position size. Ask whether the company would qualify under your current rules today. If the only reason to buy is to break even sooner, you are responding to your historical purchase price rather than to current evidence.
- Do not add merely because the decline is large or because a chart shows a previous high.
- Do not use borrowed money or money needed for near-term expenses to defend a losing position.
- Do not let a new purchase push one company or sector beyond the risk level your plan allows.
Fit the decision to your time horizon and risk capacity
Money needed soon cannot withstand the same uncertainty as money invested for a distant goal. Investor.gov states that the volatility of stocks makes them a very risky investment in the short term. It also reports that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years. That historical observation is not a forecast for a particular growth stock and should not be used to promise a recovery or predict the next year.

Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure volatility; risk capacity is your financial ability to absorb it. A position can be unsuitable even when the company’s prospects look promising if a further decline would force you to sell at a bad time.

Common reactions that lead to poor decisions
Selling solely to stop the discomfort
Emotional relief is not the same as an improved financial plan. If the thesis and allocation remain sound, selling only because the screen is uncomfortable may lock in a loss and remove an investment you still intended to own. If the thesis is broken, however, holding just to avoid admitting a mistake is equally unhelpful.
Holding solely to get back to break-even
Your entry price is not a business forecast. Compare the company with the alternatives available today. If you would not buy it now under the same facts, “waiting until I am even” is not an analytical reason to keep it.
Following a single analyst, influencer or headline
Analysts can disagree, and commentary may omit liabilities, dilution, cash needs or risk factors. Use the company’s filings and your own written criteria as the primary record of what changed.

Assuming a lower quote is automatically a bargain
A stock can fall because expected future cash flows are lower, the risk is higher or the earlier price was unrealistic. Price is one input; it is not proof of value.
A practical worksheet for the next review
- Event: Write the date, percentage change and confirmed news.
- Thesis: List the original claims in measurable language.
- Evidence: Quote the relevant figures or disclosures from the latest quarterly and annual reports.
- Change assessment: Mark each claim unchanged, weakened, disproved or untestable.
- Portfolio check: Record the company and sector weights, time horizon and maximum tolerable loss.
- Action rule: State what would make you hold, reduce, exit or add.
- Follow-up: Set a date or business milestone for the next review instead of watching every intraday move.
This worksheet creates an audit trail for your decision and makes it easier to distinguish a changed business from a changed mood.
When professional advice may be appropriate
Consider individualized advice when the position is a large share of your assets, the account has complex tax consequences, the holding is tied to employment compensation, or a sale could affect a near-term financial goal. A professional can evaluate facts this general guidance cannot, including your jurisdiction, account structure, income, other assets and tax basis. You remain responsible for checking that any recommendation fits your objectives and for understanding its costs.
What a sound outcome looks like
The goal is not to predict the next price move. It is to make a decision that follows from current business evidence, a deliberately sized portfolio and a time horizon you can actually maintain. Sometimes that means holding through volatility; sometimes it means reducing or exiting when the thesis or risk fit has changed. Buying more is a separate decision that requires affirmative evidence, not just a lower number on the screen.
