First confirm that the dates, airports, passenger count, flight numbers, cabin, fare family and optional extras are still identical. Then compare the final, all-in total and save evidence of both quotes. Ask the seller handling the booking whether the original fare can still be sold or held. If the ticket was already fully purchased, a later demand for more money is a different situation: in the United States, airlines generally cannot raise a completed ticket price except in limited, disclosed and consented tax or fee circumstances.
The right response depends on three facts: whether checkout is complete, who sold the ticket, and which country’s rules apply. Use the steps below to decide whether to accept the refreshed quote, seek a fare hold, or walk away and rebook.

First, determine whether you actually bought the ticket
A price that changes during an unfinished checkout is not the same as a seller demanding more after issuing a completed ticket. Look for a ticket number or confirmation that says the transaction is complete, and check your card or account for a completed charge rather than a temporary authorization.

What to do before paying the revised amount
- Pause the checkout. Do not click the final purchase button until you know what changed and whether the revised total is acceptable.
- Match every booking detail. Compare departure and arrival dates, airports (including nearby alternatives), passenger count and names, flight numbers, operating carrier, cabin, fare family, baggage, seats, meals, insurance and any other selected service. A lower base fare can conceal a changed connection or removed option.
- Compare the all-in total. For U.S. airfare displays, applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges must be included in the advertised fare. Compare the amount you would actually pay, not just the fare component.
- Capture evidence. Save screenshots or a PDF showing the original price, revised price, itinerary, time, seller, currency, passenger count and any “fare expired,” “price changed” or repricing message. If possible, retain the email, chat transcript and browser confirmation.
- Contact the seller named in the flow. Ask whether the earlier fare is still available, whether the system changed an itinerary or option, and whether a fare hold is available. If an agency sold the ticket, DOT instructs consumers to deal directly with that agent for the booking problem.
- Check the terms before accepting a hold. A hold can have route, fare, time-limit, payment and ticketing conditions. Confirm the deadline, whether the amount is refundable, and what happens if you do nothing.
Use the seller’s own page and terms for the specific offer. A price shown moments earlier is not automatically a guaranteed reservation, and a hold is not automatically free or available on every itinerary.
Compare the revised offer with alternatives on the same basis
If the original fare cannot be restored, compare complete alternatives rather than headline prices. Record these fields for each option:
- Final total, including mandatory taxes, fees and carrier surcharges.
- Exact airports, flight numbers, connection points, travel dates and times.
- Cabin, fare family, change and cancellation restrictions, and ticketing deadline.
- Checked and carry-on baggage allowances, seat selection and other paid options.
- Seller identity and who will handle changes, refunds or disruptions.
- Whether the ticket is already issued, merely reserved, or still an uncompleted quote.
- Availability and conditions of any hold or cancellation option.
For example, an alternative with a lower base fare may cost more after a checked bag and seat are added. Conversely, a slightly higher fare may be preferable if it includes the baggage or change flexibility you need. Make the comparison using the same passenger details and currency.

How the U.S. 24-hour rule can help
For tickets sold by a U.S. airline when departure is at least seven days away, the airline must provide one of two choices: a 24-hour, penalty-free cancellation for a full refund, or a 24-hour hold of the quoted reservation without payment. The airline does not have to provide both choices. This rule addresses the reservation or quote; it is not a requirement for free changes after you have purchased a ticket. DOT explains the scope in Refunds and Buying a Ticket.

Do not cancel and immediately rebook assuming the same fare will return. DOT cautions that prices can change quickly when a traveler cancels and rebooks. A 24-hour option also does not promise that a fare will remain available after the reservation is canceled.
Fare holds: useful, but always conditional
Airline-specific example
Some airlines offer a product that temporarily reserves an eligible quote. Emirates says its “Hold My Fare” feature can reserve an eligible Economy Class fare for 24 hours at no charge. Its page excludes departures from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Japan and Mexico, and states that terms apply. Treat this as an example of one airline’s offer, not a universal entitlement. Trade-facing policy example
Qatar Airways publishes a 24-hour fare quote guarantee in a trade portal. The policy lists exceptions, including missed advance-purchase conditions and ticket time limits. Because the page is written for trade users, it should not be presented as a general consumer right. If a seller invokes this policy, ask for the exact fare rule and ticketing deadline that applies to your booking: Qatar Airways 24-hour Fare Quote Guarantee Policy.
Questions to ask before relying on a hold
- Is the hold available for this route, cabin, fare family and passenger type?
- When exactly does the hold expire, and which time zone controls?
- Is there a fee, and is it refundable or credited toward ticketing?
- Must payment or ticket issuance occur before a stated time limit or advance-purchase deadline?
- Will baggage, seats and other options remain at the quoted prices?
- What happens if the airline changes the schedule while the fare is held?
If the seller asks for more after you paid
Keep the ticket confirmation, ticket number, receipt, payment authorization and any message requesting additional money. Do not pay a second amount merely because an agent says the fare was wrong; ask for the legal and contractual basis in writing.
For a ticket fully purchased from a U.S. airline, DOT states that the airline is prohibited from increasing the ticket price or requiring additional payment after the transaction is complete, unless it disclosed the possibility of a government-imposed tax or fee increase and obtained your consent. Separate rules can apply when a partial-payment arrangement expressly disclosed a possible increase. The protection concerns a completed ticket, not an unfinished quote.

Send the airline or seller a concise written request that identifies the confirmation number, purchase time, amount paid and the additional amount demanded. Ask them to confirm whether the ticket is valid and, if they claim an exception, to identify the disclosed term and your consent. Keep copies of every response. If the seller is an agency, direct the request to that agency as well as the airline’s customer-care channel.

A cancellation of a reservation made at a mistaken fare is distinct from a price that merely changes while you are still shopping. DOT says consumers whose mistaken-fare reservation is canceled must be reimbursed for the full ticket price, optional services purchased and reasonable, actual, verifiable out-of-pocket costs incurred in reliance on the purchase. Preserve receipts for those reliance costs and the cancellation notice. This guidance applies to the circumstances described by DOT; it does not guarantee that every disputed price change qualifies as a mistaken-fare cancellation.
UK and other geographic limits
Rules outside the United States differ. For UK flight-only bookings, the Civil Aviation Authority says an airline or travel provider cannot add a jet-fuel surcharge to an existing booking after the consumer has booked and paid, and mandatory charges must be included in the full and final price upfront. The CAA distinguishes package holidays, so do not apply its flight-only guidance automatically to a package that includes accommodation or other services. Elsewhere, identify the regulator, seller country, point of sale and whether the booking is flight-only or a package. Read the fare rules and the seller’s terms for the currency, refund route, ticketing deadline and dispute process. A U.S. airline rule cannot be assumed to protect a booking sold by a foreign agency, and a UK flight-only principle should not be extended to every holiday package.
A practical decision path
Accept the new price when
- The itinerary and inclusions are unchanged, the all-in total fits your budget, and the fare’s restrictions are acceptable.
- Comparable alternatives cost as much or more once baggage, seats, taxes and connection quality are included.
- Waiting would risk losing the dates or a time-sensitive ticketing opportunity.
Seek a hold or more information when
- You need time to verify another passenger’s plans or compare a complete alternative.
- The seller confirms a hold is available and gives a written expiration time and conditions.
- The revised amount may reflect a changed option, passenger detail or itinerary that can be corrected.
Leave the transaction when
- The seller cannot explain a material change, the total is no longer acceptable, or the conditions differ from what you need.
- An agency cannot confirm who will issue the ticket or handle a refund.
- The fare has not been purchased and no contractual hold applies.
If you leave, close or cancel the unfinished checkout according to the seller’s instructions, then compare alternatives afresh. Do not assume that repeatedly refreshing the same search will restore the earlier quote; the only reliable evidence is the price and terms the seller is currently willing to ticket.
How to document and escalate the problem
- Make a timeline with the original quote time, repricing time, payment attempt, ticket issuance (if any) and every contact.
- Keep screenshots that show the URL or seller name, itinerary, currency and total; redact passport numbers and full payment-card details before sharing.
- Request a written explanation and a specific remedy: honor the quoted fare, place an eligible hold, confirm the ticket is valid, or refund the amount due.
- Use the seller’s formal complaint or refund channel if frontline support cannot resolve it.
- For a covered U.S. airline transaction, consult current DOT consumer guidance before escalating to the regulator. For an agency booking, pursue the agency first because it controls the agency transaction.
Policies, fare inventory and regulatory guidance can change. Recheck the applicable regulator page and the seller’s current terms at the moment you book, especially when departure is near or the itinerary is part of a package.
