What to do when a deposit return machine rejects your bottle or can

Take the container out, check that it is empty, undamaged and has a readable barcode and any deposit-scheme mark, then rotate it and try again. If it still fails, ask store staff whether they can inspect it or process a manual return. If the store cannot resolve the problem, contact the operator of your local deposit scheme and follow its complaint route.

Those steps are broadly useful, but eligibility, refund methods and retailer duties are set by the scheme in your country or state.

Start with this six-step sequence

  1. Remove and inspect the container. Empty any remaining liquid. Check for a readable barcode, the local deposit mark and a container that is not crushed, split or badly damaged.
  2. Rotate it and insert it again. Re-turn, Ireland’s deposit-return scheme, specifically tells consumers to turn a rejected can or bottle around and retry it.
  3. Check local eligibility. Material, capacity, beverage type, packaging shape, barcode and deposit marking can all determine whether a container qualifies. A machine may reject an item that looks similar to an eligible one but is outside the scheme.
  4. Ask a staff member to inspect it. Explain that the machine rejected the container and ask whether the store has a manual-return procedure. Do not assume a manual refund is available everywhere; that is a local rule.
  5. If the machine is out of service, ask about another route. The store may have a second machine, another return point or a manual process, depending on local law.
  6. Escalate unresolved repeat failures. Keep the container and, if practical, photograph its label and barcode. Contact the scheme operator, then the relevant consumer or regulator service if the store and operator do not resolve the dispute.

Your refund is normally tied to the container being both eligible and recognizable. A rejection is therefore not automatically evidence that the deposit has been lost, nor is it proof that the store must pay you immediately. The correct remedy depends on the jurisdiction.

Why a machine rejects a container

Reverse-vending machines (RVMs) identify packaging with cameras, barcode readers, sensors and a product database. The exact tests differ by operator, so examples from one scheme cannot be treated as universal eligibility rules. The common causes below are a troubleshooting guide, not a worldwide standard.

The container is not in return condition

Return and Earn in New South Wales tells users to bring containers that are empty, uncrushed and unbroken, with a visible barcode. A crushed can may no longer present the shape or code the machine expects. A bottle with a torn label, severe dents or a cracked body can fail even if it once carried a deposit.

The barcode or deposit mark cannot be read

Dansk Retursystem in Denmark says the barcode, deposit mark and packaging shape must be identifiable. A faded, wrinkled or removed label can prevent recognition. Some schemes also require a specific logo or symbol; Re-turn advises Irish consumers to check for a visible barcode and Re-turn logo.

Liquid or another substance remains inside

Retailer guidance from Dunnes Stores in Ireland lists detected liquid as a possible rejection reason. Drain the container completely before trying again. Do not add anything to the container or attempt to disguise its contents.

The item is outside the scheme

Out-of-range volume, unsuitable material, an excluded beverage category or a missing deposit mark can all make an item ineligible. A container can look like an accepted bottle or can while differing in a capacity, material or product category that the local rules exclude. Use the operator’s accepted-container lookup, where one is provided, rather than relying on appearance alone.

The machine or its database has a problem

Repeated rejection of several apparently eligible containers may indicate a machine fault or an identification-data issue. Consignaction in Quebec says newly redeemable containers may be added during periodic database updates and describes a possible network-update issue when rejection continues. Treat that as an operator-specific possibility, not a general explanation for every failed scan.

Inspect the container before spending time at the counter

A two-minute check can distinguish a damaged item from a machine problem. Examine the following in order:

  • Empty: pour out all liquid and let the container drain.
  • Shape: make sure it is not crushed, flattened or split. Do not deliberately reshape it in a way that damages the barcode or label.
  • Label and barcode: look for a complete, legible code with no heavy scratches, folds or missing section.
  • Scheme mark: confirm that the logo, deposit symbol or other mark required in your area is visible.
  • Size and material: compare the container with the local scheme’s stated capacities and accepted materials.
  • Product category: check whether the beverage type is covered; rules can exclude particular products even when the package is metal or plastic.

Keep the container in the condition in which it was rejected. Staff or the operator may need to see the code, label and shape to determine whether the problem is eligibility or equipment.

Retry correctly, then involve store staff

Rotate and reinsert once

Insert the container in the orientation the machine indicates, then rotate it and try again if it rejects the first scan. This is the specific consumer instruction published by Re-turn. Avoid repeatedly forcing a container into the intake; that can damage the packaging or the machine and does not create an entitlement to a refund.

Ask what the store can do

Tell the attendant which machine rejected the item and whether you saw an error message. Ask two precise questions: “Can you check whether this container qualifies?” and “Is a manual return or another return point available here?” The answer may depend on the store’s agreement with the scheme and local law.

Try another machine or location when offered

If one RVM is full or out of service, staff may direct you to another machine in the same store or to a nearby authorized return point. Take the container with you so it can be inspected if the second machine also rejects it. Do not assume a different retailer has the same acceptance rules; the scheme’s eligibility list still controls.

What “manual return” means—and why it is not universal

A manual return is a staff-assisted count or inspection instead of an automated scan. Whether it must be offered, may be offered or is unavailable depends on the local scheme. The following are jurisdiction-specific examples:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Jurisdiction or operator Published situation What a consumer should understand
Denmark — Dansk Retursystem Stores must continue manual refunds when an RVM is out of service. This obligation is Danish; it does not automatically apply in another country.
Oregon, United States — Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission A store must hand-count a qualifying container rejected by its machine under Oregon’s Bottle Bill. The container still has to qualify under Oregon rules, and the hand-count requirement is Oregon-specific.
Ireland — Re-turn Consumers are told to ask a staff member when a container is rejected and to ask about another machine or return point if equipment is unavailable. The guidance does not promise a manual refund for every rejection.
Michigan, United States Michigan EGLE directs consumers to contact the store manager first and then the Michigan Attorney General Consumer Protection Division if the issue remains unresolved. Follow Michigan’s process only for a Michigan transaction; another state will have a different regulator.

These examples show why an article cannot give one worldwide answer to “must the retailer pay me?” Identify the scheme printed on the container or operating at the store before relying on a manual-refund rule.

When several eligible containers fail

One damaged bottle points to a container problem. A series of clean, intact containers failing in the same machine points more strongly to equipment, connectivity or database trouble. Record the pattern without assuming the cause.

  1. Note the store, machine number if displayed, date and approximate time.
  2. Keep at least one rejected container and photograph the front label, barcode, deposit mark and any error message.
  3. Ask staff whether the machine is known to be offline, full or awaiting a software or database update.
  4. Ask for the name or contact channel of the local scheme operator.
  5. Send the operator the requested details. Consignaction’s retailer guidance, for example, recommends a photo showing the label and barcode when repeated rejection continues.

An operator may confirm that a product was newly added to its database, that a network update is pending or that the package is not eligible. Only the operator or regulator can establish which explanation applies under that scheme.

Escalate a disputed refund without losing evidence

First level: store manager

Ask for the manager rather than arguing with a checkout queue. State the container type, the machine result and what you are requesting: an eligibility check, a manual count, directions to another return point or a written explanation. Stay focused on one container at a time if you have a mixed bag.

Second level: deposit-scheme operator

Use the operator’s consumer contact form or telephone channel. Provide the store location, date, container barcode, scheme mark, photographs and the machine’s displayed message. Ask whether the operator needs the physical container mailed or retained. Do not discard it until you know.

Third level: regulator or consumer-protection office

If the store and scheme operator do not resolve a qualifying refund dispute, use the process set by your local regulator. Michigan EGLE’s published route is store manager first, followed by the Michigan Attorney General Consumer Protection Division if the matter remains unresolved. Other jurisdictions may use a different agency, deadline or form.

Protect your own records

Save receipts showing the purchase when available, photographs and correspondence. A deposit is usually a small amount, but retaining evidence matters when multiple containers are rejected or when a retailer disputes that the item was presented. Never send payment-card details or identity documents unless the official operator specifically requires them through a verified channel.

What the available evidence says about rejection rates

There is no broadly applicable rejection-rate statistic in the published guidance described here. A written reply from Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment dated 6 October 2026 says that “the vast majority of eligible containers are successfully accepted” by Return Right RVMs with the refund made on the spot, while “a small proportion of eligible containers are rejected due to improper deposit behaviour.” The ministry gives a crushed container as an example but does not provide a percentage. That qualitative statement applies to Singapore’s system and should not be generalized to other schemes.

Decision guide: choose the next action

What you observe Best next action Why
One bottle is crushed, leaking or has no readable code Check the local rules; ask staff whether any manual route exists, but expect that the item may be ineligible. Condition and identification are basic recognition requirements in several schemes.
The same intact item is rejected once Rotate and retry, then ask staff for an eligibility check. A second orientation can allow the reader to see the code.
Several intact, marked containers fail in one machine Ask whether another machine or return point is operating and report the pattern to the operator. The issue may involve equipment, connectivity or a product database.
The machine is visibly out of order Ask staff about the jurisdiction’s manual-refund or alternate-machine rule. Some places require manual refunds; others only advise consumers to seek another route.
Staff refuse to address a qualifying-container dispute Record details, contact the scheme operator, then use the local regulator’s consumer process. Escalation routes are jurisdiction-specific and need evidence.

Questions to answer before leaving the store

  • Is this exact material, size and beverage category covered by the local deposit scheme?
  • Is the barcode and required deposit mark readable?
  • Did I try rotating the container as the operator advises?
  • Is the machine operating, full or showing an error?
  • Can this store perform a manual return, and if not, where is the nearest authorized point?
  • What is the official contact route for a repeated rejection?

If you can answer those questions, you will know whether you have a damaged or ineligible container, a one-off scanning failure, an equipment outage or a dispute that needs the scheme operator or regulator.
