What to Do When a Crypto Exchange Shows a Price Different From the Broader Market

A different crypto price is not automatically an error. An exchange may be showing its own last trade, bid, ask, midpoint, or an estimated conversion quote. Because every venue has a separate order book, two legitimate prices can differ at the same moment. Before buying, selling, or filing a complaint, match the exact trading pair and timestamp, identify what each number represents, inspect the bid, ask and available depth, and check the order preview and final execution record.

If the difference remains after those checks—or the completed order record conflicts with the confirmation—save dated screenshots, stop submitting duplicate orders, and contact the exchange through its official support channel.

Why two exchanges can show different prices

There is no single universal crypto price. Each exchange maintains its own order book: a list of buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks). The last price on a venue is simply the price of the most recent trade completed there. It does not have to equal the last trade on another venue.

Prices can diverge more noticeably when a pair has little trading activity or shallow liquidity. If trades are sparse, the last-price field may remain unchanged for a long interval and then jump when a new order matches. With few orders at each price level, even a modest order can consume the best quote and fill at the next levels.

Official guidance from OKX explains the distinction plainly: “The last price only changes when a trade happens.” That statement describes a venue’s last-trade field, not a guarantee that you can buy or sell your intended quantity at that number.

“Market price” can mean several different things

When people compare screens, they often compare unlike figures. A chart may display the last trade, while a buy ticket uses the ask or an all-in conversion quote. A sell order normally meets the bid. A midpoint—halfway between bid and ask—is a reference value, not an immediately executable price. Fees, spread and quote-currency conversion can further change the amount shown at review.

Check the discrepancy in the right order

  1. Match the asset and pair. Confirm the base asset, quote currency and product are identical. BTC/USD, BTC/USDT and a BTC conversion service are different markets. A difference between them is not evidence of an exchange malfunction.
  2. Match the timestamp. Refresh both screens and compare contemporaneous data. Do not compare a live order book with a delayed chart, cached mobile screen or an old screenshot. Record the time zone and whether either display is marked delayed.
  3. Identify the price definition. Look for labels such as last, bid, ask, midpoint, indicative, estimated, or buy/sell conversion quote. Read the venue’s help text if the label is unclear.
  4. Inspect bid and ask together. The gap between them is the spread. A headline last price can sit between, above or below the quotes currently available for your order.
  5. Check depth at your intended size. Review several levels of the order book, not just the top line. Compare how much is available at each price and estimate the weighted average for the quantity you plan to trade.
  6. Look at recent activity. Recent volume and the frequency of trades indicate whether the last trade is representative. A thin pair can show a stale price even while another venue is actively updating.
  7. Review order terms and preview. Confirm quantity, order type, limit price, estimated total, fees and any slippage or price-protection notice before submitting.

Understand what your order can actually receive

Marketable orders

A market order, or another order that is immediately marketable, takes available liquidity from the book. A buy consumes asks, usually from the lowest upward; a sell consumes bids, usually from the highest downward. If the requested size is larger than the best level, portions fill at progressively less favorable prices. The resulting average can therefore differ from the last trade and from the first quote you saw.

Limit orders

A limit order sets a price condition. Coinbase’s pricing guidance describes a limit order as executing only at the specified limit price or better when sufficient liquidity exists. That protects the maximum buy price or minimum sell price you set, but it does not guarantee a fill. If no matching quantity is available, the order can remain open, fill partially, or expire according to the venue’s settings.

Estimated and all-in quotes

Review screens can be estimates rather than commitments. The quote may move while you confirm, especially in a fast or thin market. A conversion interface can also bundle spread and fees into one amount, making it unsuitable for a direct comparison with a chart’s last trade. Treat an estimate as provisional until the platform marks the order final.

How to verify an order you already placed

  1. Check status first. Open the order or activity page and determine whether it is pending, partially filled, filled, canceled or rejected. Do not submit a second order while the first one is unresolved.
  2. Open completed-order details. Record the exact pair, side, quantity, execution time, average or per-fill price, fees and transaction identifier. Fidelity’s crypto help guidance directs customers to completed order details for the exact price after completion.
  3. Reconcile the confirmation. Compare the final record with the confirmation screen and any receipt email. A review estimate is not the same evidence as the executed fills; use the completed record for the amount actually traded.
  4. Save evidence. Keep dated screenshots of the quote, order preview, confirmation, final details and relevant order-book view. Include the device clock or platform timestamp when possible.
  5. Escalate through official support. Use the exchange’s in-app or published support route. Provide the order ID, pair, timestamps, quantity, screenshots and a concise description of the mismatch. Never send credentials or a private key to a person claiming to provide support.

When a difference is normal—and when it deserves investigation

Observation Likely explanation What to do
Last price differs, but bid and ask overlap the other venue’s range Different last trades or a small spread difference Compare the same timestamp and intended order size
Price is flat on one venue while another moves Low trade activity or a stale last-trade field Inspect recent trades, volume and depth
Small order fills near the displayed ask or bid Normal spread and execution against the book Use the fill record and fee breakdown
Larger order has a worse average than the top quote Slippage from consuming multiple depth levels Review the book; consider a limit order or smaller slices
Review estimate changes before submission Volatile market or quote-expiry window Read the final confirmation and price-protection terms
Final record conflicts with the confirmation or stated limit Possible interface, recording or execution problem Preserve evidence and contact official support before trading again

A persistent difference by itself does not prove manipulation or a technical fault. It becomes more concerning when the pair, timestamp and price definition match, the available book cannot explain the fill, or the final record violates the terms you accepted.

Use a consistent comparison method

For a meaningful two-venue comparison, write down the following fields side by side:

  • Asset and exact quote currency
  • Trading product (spot pair, conversion service, derivative or other)
  • Timestamp, time zone and live-versus-delayed status
  • Price type: last, bid, ask, midpoint or indicative quote
  • Best bid and ask, plus the spread
  • Depth available at the quantity you intend to trade
  • Recent trade volume and activity
  • Order type, quantity, limit condition and expiration
  • Trading fees, conversion charges and any disclosed protection limits
  • Final fill price, fees and transaction record

This prevents a common error: comparing a reference number from one venue with an executable, fee-inclusive quote from another. A multi-venue data screen can help with observation, but market data alone never guarantees that the same price is executable for your size.

What EU MiCA rules say—and what they do not say

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework contains specific provisions for covered crypto-asset service providers and trading platforms. It is not a worldwide price-matching rule, and whether it applies depends on the provider, service, transaction and jurisdiction.

Exchange services under Article 77

MiCA Article 77 addresses exchanging crypto-assets for funds or for other crypto-assets. Covered providers must publish a firm price or a method for determining the price, together with applicable limits, and inform clients about the conditions that make an exchange order final. Article 77(3) states: “Crypto-asset service providers shall execute client orders at the prices displayed at the time when the order for exchange is final.” The provision concerns the price displayed at finality under the regulation; it does not mean every chart value on every crypto website is a guaranteed quote.

Trading-platform information under Article 76

Article 76 covers operation of a crypto-asset trading platform. Its requirements include publishing bid and ask prices and the depth of trading interests at those prices, as well as the price, volume and time of executed transactions. Those disclosures can make it easier to reconstruct what was available, but they do not eliminate normal differences between separate venues.

ESMA’s interpretation

In Q&A ESMA_QA_2181, published May 17, 2024, ESMA says the required information should be available in a public location and that quotations should contain elements allowing a party to anticipate the exchange price with certainty. That is regulatory guidance about Article 77, not a decision on an individual complaint. For a dispute, read the provider’s terms, identify the applicable national regulator and obtain professional advice if the amount or legal issue is significant.

Common mistakes that create false alarms

  • Comparing different quote currencies: USD, USDT and EUR can have their own conversion differences.
  • Using a chart candle as an executable quote: A candle’s last or closing value does not show the full live book.
  • Ignoring order size: The top bid or ask may cover only a small amount.
  • Forgetting fees: A fee-inclusive total will not equal a pre-fee market price.
  • Assuming a limit order must fill: The price condition protects the limit but can leave the order open.
  • Repeating an order during uncertainty: The first order may later fill, creating an unintended duplicate position.

A practical decision rule

If the pair, timestamp and price definition do not match, treat the difference as a comparison error until proven otherwise. If they do match, use the order book and intended size to determine whether spread or depth explains it. If the final execution record still cannot be reconciled with the accepted terms, stop trading that instrument, preserve the evidence and escalate through official support. Keep the order ID and complete timeline; a clear record is more useful than a screenshot of an isolated headline price.
