What to Do if You’re Worried Social Security Won’t Cover Your Retirement

Social Security is not projected to simply stop paying benefits. The Social Security Administration’s June 9, 2026 projection says the legally separate Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) reserves could be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032, while incoming revenue would still be enough to pay 78% of scheduled OASI benefits under the Trustees’ assumptions. The combined OASI and Disability Insurance (OASDI) funds are projected to last until 2034, when 83% of scheduled combined benefits would be payable. Those are national fund projections, not a promise about your personal check or a prediction that every recipient would experience an identical cut.

The useful response is to replace a headline number with your own plan: check your earnings record, obtain estimates at several claiming ages, and compare those estimates with your household’s expected spending, savings, pensions and other income. The steps below can show whether you have a gap and which decisions can narrow it.

What the “Social Security will run out” projection actually says

The figures most often quoted come from the Social Security Administration’s June 9, 2026 press release and its Trustees Report Summary. They describe trust-fund reserves, not the disappearance of the Social Security program.

Projection What is being measured Projected date Continuing income at that point
OASI Retirement and survivors’ insurance reserves Fourth quarter of 2032 78% of scheduled OASI benefits
Combined OASDI OASI and Disability Insurance funds illustrated together 2034 83% of scheduled combined benefits

OASI and DI are legally separate funds, so do not treat the combined-fund illustration as if it were the OASI projection. The dates and percentages are actuarial projections based on economic, demographic and policy assumptions; later Trustees reports can change them. The 78% figure also is not a personal 22% cut scheduled for each worker. Congress could change financing or benefit law before either projection date, and the amount payable to an individual would depend on the law and circumstances then in effect.

For planning purposes, the prudent conclusion is neither “ignore Social Security” nor “assume nothing will be paid.” Use the benefit estimate currently available to you, stress-test your budget for a lower result, and keep checking for updated official projections.

Start with your own Social Security estimate

A national reserve projection cannot tell you what your retirement check will be. SSA calculates a retirement benefit from your covered earnings record and the age at which you start benefits. Use the agency’s Get a benefits estimate page to sign in to or create a my Social Security account, review your Statement and see personalized estimates. The Benefit Calculators provide another official way to model results.

  1. Open or create your account. Use the identity-verification process on SSA.gov and save a copy of the current Statement for your records.
  2. Inspect every earnings year. Compare the wages shown with your W-2s, tax returns and other employment records. Look for a missing employer, an incorrect amount or a year that is attributed to someone else.
  3. Run more than one claiming-age estimate. Record the displayed monthly amount for age 62, your full retirement age and age 70. SSA’s calculators are designed to show these comparisons; the actual full-retirement-age result depends on your birth year.
  4. Include future work assumptions. If you expect to keep working, enter or review the earnings assumptions available in the calculator. Additional covered earnings can change the eventual calculation.
  5. Download the results and date them. Your estimate changes as earnings are reported and as SSA updates assumptions, so keep the calculation date with your notes rather than treating one number as permanent.

These tools provide planning information, not a guarantee of a future payment. If your record is incomplete or you cannot access an account, contact SSA through the contact options on SSA.gov rather than relying on an unofficial calculator.

Verify the earnings record that drives the benefit

SSA uses a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings in the retirement-benefit calculation. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, years with no earnings count as zeros. That means an additional year of covered work can raise the benefit when it replaces a zero or a lower-earning year; it does not automatically produce an increase if it does not improve the highest-35-year set.

What to gather before disputing an entry

  • W-2 forms, pay stubs or employer payroll records for the year in question.
  • Self-employment tax returns and proof of payment when the missing earnings came from a business.
  • Dates of employment, employer names and any legal name or Social Security-number changes that could have split your record.
  • A written list of the year, amount and reason you believe the Statement is wrong.

Use SSA’s current instructions and contact channels to report an error. Keep copies of what you submit and any response. A correction can affect not only the retirement estimate but also benefits for a spouse or survivors, so do not postpone a documented discrepancy until the month you plan to claim.

Compare claiming ages without assuming one is best for everyone

Retirement benefits can generally begin at 62 at a reduced monthly amount. Delaying the start increases the monthly amount through age 70; there is no additional delayed-retirement-credit increase after 70. Those are payment rules, not a universal recommendation. The right comparison depends on health and longevity expectations, a spouse or other household beneficiary, cash needs before claiming and whether work will continue.

Claiming point What the SSA rules establish Questions to put beside the estimate
Age 62 Benefits may start, but the monthly amount is reduced compared with waiting until full retirement age. Can savings or other income cover the years before a later claim? Would an early check be needed for essential bills?
Full retirement age Your unreduced-retirement-age amount is tied to the birth-year schedule SSA applies to you. How does this timing fit a planned retirement date, continued work and the household’s need for dependable income?
Age 70 Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly amount up to age 70; waiting beyond 70 does not add another delayed-credit increase. Can you fund the bridge years, and would a larger later payment improve the household’s long-term cash flow?

Compare the options using the same assumptions for future earnings and household spending. A lower monthly amount that starts earlier may be useful for a household with little cash reserve; a larger amount that starts later may be useful when other assets can cover the gap. Neither conclusion follows from age alone. If you are married, widowed or supporting dependents, evaluate how the timing affects the household rather than looking only at your individual payment.

Turn the estimate into a household affordability test

Social Security “coverage” cannot be measured without your own expenses and other income. The available official material does not establish a universal replacement ratio or a standard percentage of retirement spending that Social Security will cover. Build a simple monthly picture instead.

  1. Estimate essential spending. List housing, utilities, food, insurance premiums, transportation, taxes, debt payments, health costs and any support you expect to provide. Separate recurring essentials from discretionary travel, gifts and upgrades.
  2. List dependable income. Add the SSA estimate for each relevant claiming age, pensions, annuities if applicable, rental income you can reasonably document and other recurring sources.
  3. List investable assets separately. Record workplace plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable savings and cash reserves. Note which accounts are liquid and which have withdrawal restrictions or tax consequences.
  4. Calculate the gap. Subtract dependable income from expected monthly spending. Then test a conservative case in which Social Security is lower than the current scheduled estimate and investment returns are not unusually strong.
  5. Map the years before claiming. If you plan to delay Social Security, identify exactly which assets or income pay the bills during that bridge period and how many months of reserves remain afterward.
Monthly planning line Your figure Why it matters
Essential spending Enter your household amount Shows the minimum cash flow that must be covered.
Discretionary spending Enter your household amount Identifies expenses that could be reduced temporarily.
Social Security at each claiming age Copy the SSA estimates Shows the effect of timing without guessing a national average.
Pensions and other recurring income Enter documented amounts Prevents the plan from treating Social Security as the only source.
Planned savings withdrawals Enter a sustainable amount Reveals whether assets can bridge a delayed claim or cover a shortfall.

Run the exercise for the individual and for the household. A benefit that appears adequate against one person’s expenses may not cover two people, a mortgage, caregiving or higher medical costs. Conversely, a household with a pension and substantial savings may be able to delay claiming even if the initial Social Security estimate looks modest.

If there is a gap, choose the lever that fits your situation

Improve the earnings record before claiming

After correcting errors, continued covered work can help when new earnings replace lower years in the highest-35 calculation. Ask the SSA calculator to reflect plausible future earnings rather than an unrealistic promotion or indefinite work horizon.

Save more or preserve existing savings

Increase workplace or personal retirement contributions if your budget allows, and identify withdrawals that could be postponed. The point is not to chase a particular savings target without household numbers; it is to create enough liquidity for the years in which you choose not to claim.

Adjust the spending plan deliberately

Separate expenses that are fixed, flexible and one-time. A written list lets you reduce discretionary costs without accidentally cutting insurance, housing stability or necessary care. Revisit the list after major life changes.

Coordinate pensions and other income

Place pension start dates, part-time work and other dependable income on the same timeline as the three SSA estimates. A bridge strategy can be workable only if the cash flow is available when needed and does not exhaust emergency reserves.

Consider a neutral second opinion for complex households

Timing can be difficult when a household includes a spouse, survivor concerns, a pension choice, irregular work or a large tax-sensitive portfolio. A fee-only retirement planner can help coordinate the moving parts. Verify the professional’s credentials, services and compensation directly; no provider, rating or fee level is established here.

Common mistakes that make the fear worse

  • Using the 2032 date as a personal deadline. It is a projection for OASI reserves, not a date when every individual’s check stops.
  • Applying the 78% figure directly to your estimate. It is a fund-level payable-share projection under assumptions, not an individualized benefit calculation.
  • Checking only your current salary. The calculation uses your covered earnings history, with zeros for years without earnings when there are fewer than 35 earnings years.
  • Choosing an age from a slogan. “Claim at 62” and “always wait until 70” ignore cash flow, health, household roles and continued work.
  • Building a plan around one old report. Trustees projections change; check the newest SSA release when you revisit the plan.
  • Ignoring documentation. An unsupported memory of past wages is harder to correct than a file containing tax and payroll records.

Keep the plan current

Review the earnings record whenever you receive a new Statement or finish a significant year of work. Re-run estimates after a job change, marital or widowhood event, pension decision, major debt payoff or change in expected retirement date. Reprice the household budget at least annually and whenever housing, insurance or health costs change materially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the latest fund outlook, consult the Trustees Report Summary. For personal calculations, use SSA’s retirement-benefits planning pages and the agency’s retirement-age and stopping-work guidance. The page explaining early eligibility is You Can Receive Benefits Before Your Full Retirement Age. Confirm the current rules before making an irreversible claiming decision.

The practical answer to the worry is a documented range of outcomes: what your record supports, what each claiming age pays, what your household needs and how savings or other income bridge any difference. That process cannot guarantee future legislation or markets, but it turns an alarming national projection into decisions you can review and change.
