A denial for a Delta SkyMiles credit card gives you a specific next move: read the American Express adverse-action notice, identify the stated reason, and then choose between asking American Express to review the decision and correcting any inaccurate credit-report information. American Express lists 1-800-567-1083 for additional information and review requests, but says a reversal is not guaranteed. If you plan to apply again, its published guidance says to wait at least 30 days from the date you received the decline letter.
Start with the decline letter
Do not guess why the application was declined. The letter or electronic notice is the controlling explanation for your individual application. American Express says the notice should provide the reasons for the decision and identify the credit bureaus whose information it considered, when bureau data was used. Keep the notice available while you contact the issuer or review your reports.

- Locate the complete notice. Check your mail, email, and American Express online messages. Record the date on the letter because the reapplication advice is measured from that date.
- Write down each stated reason. A reason may refer to information in a credit report or to an American Express underwriting decision. The notice should give specific principal factors or explain how to obtain them.
- Note every bureau named. If the notice identifies a reporting company, use that company for the free-report request and comparison described below.
- Decide which problem you are addressing. A call to American Express asks the issuer to explain or reconsider its decision. A dispute with a bureau and the information provider addresses inaccurate report data. They are different processes and can be pursued for different reasons.
American Express’s customer-service explanation begins, “If your Card application was declined, we realize this may not have been the outcome you had hoped for.” The useful part of the notice is not the apology; it is the factual reason and the contact information that follows.

Call 1-800-567-1083 if you want more information or want American Express to review the application. The issuer specifically directs declined applicants to this number for those requests. You can also ask what information was considered and whether the decision can be reconsidered.

What to have ready before calling
- The decline letter, including its date and every stated reason.
- Your application details and identifying information needed to locate the file.
- Documentation that directly addresses a factual error, such as an account shown with the wrong balance or status.
- A short, accurate explanation of any changed circumstance since the application, without claiming that a particular credit score guarantees approval.
What a review can and cannot do
A review is an opportunity to ask the issuer to look at the application again; it is not an appeal with a promised result. American Express states, “Keep in mind that we cannot guarantee we will change our decision.” A representative may maintain the denial, request additional information, or change the outcome. Do not treat a review request as approval, a correction of a bureau file, or a reason to submit multiple new applications.
Ask the representative to explain whether the decision was based on a specific bureau item, an American Express record, or another factor. If the reason is unclear, request that the issuer explain how to obtain the specific reasons required in the notice. Take notes of the call, including the date, the department, and any follow-up instructions.
If a credit report was used, check it within 60 days
When the notice says a credit report informed the decision, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says you can request a free copy from the reporting company named in the adverse-action notice within 60 days. This is a right tied to the notice, not a general promise that every credit-report request is free at any time.
Use the bureau identified in the notice first. Compare the report with the reason in the letter and look for information that is incomplete, outdated, mixed with another person’s file, or otherwise inaccurate. Preserve a copy of the report and mark the exact account, date, balance, payment status, or inquiry you believe is wrong.

How to dispute an error
- Gather evidence. Collect statements, payment confirmations, identity documents, account-closure letters, or correspondence that supports the correction.
- Dispute with the reporting company. Follow its dispute method and identify each inaccurate item precisely. Include copies rather than originals of supporting documents.
- Dispute with the furnisher. Send the same factual dispute to the company that supplied the information to the bureau. The CFPB advises using both channels when report information is inaccurate.
- Keep a complete record. Save the dispute, attachments, delivery confirmation, and the bureau or furnisher’s response. These records show what was challenged and when.
- Recheck the corrected report. A correction can fix the file, but it does not itself require American Express to approve the card. If the issuer’s notice still matters after the correction, contact American Express and explain what changed.
The CFPB’s guidance on denial based on a credit report is available at consumerfinance.gov. It explains the free-report right, the dispute process, and the information that should appear in an adverse-action notice.
Understand the credit-score effect correctly
A declined application and a credit inquiry are not the same event. American Express says it does not report a declined application as a new account, so the denial itself does not create a new account on your credit file. It also says the request for credit appears on credit-bureau reports as an inquiry.
That statement is specific to American Express’s guidance for a declined application. It should not be generalized to every issuer or every application flow. An inquiry can be visible to lenders even though no account was opened. The number, type, and scoring treatment of inquiries depend on the bureau’s model and the surrounding credit-file details; the official material here does not establish a particular score change.

Current Delta personal-card pages also describe an application flow in which an applicant can learn whether they are approved before accepting an approved card and say that accepting an approved card may affect a credit score. Those pages do not establish that every applicant or every American Express card flow is identical. Therefore, do not assume that every application has no score impact; rely on the terms and notice for the specific flow you used.

Wait before submitting another application
American Express advises applicants to wait at least 30 days from the date they received the decline letter before applying again. This is issuer guidance, not a promise that a later application will be approved and not a requirement to file another application.
Use the waiting period to resolve the stated issue rather than repeatedly applying. If you dispute an inaccurate account, allow the dispute process to produce a response and obtain an updated report before deciding whether a new application makes sense. If the notice gives an American Express-specific reason that is not a report error, ask the issuer for clarification or review instead of trying to work around the decision with multiple submissions.
The 30-day reapplication advice is different from the legal notice deadline described below. One concerns when American Express says to apply again; the other concerns when a creditor generally must send an adverse-action notice after receiving a completed application.
Do not confuse a pending application with a denial
An application that has not been evaluated instantly is not the same as a completed denial. For a pending application, use American Express’s Application Status page. The search-result guidance associated with that service lists 1-888-826-3471 and weekday phone availability from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mountain Time; confirm the current number and hours on the live American Express page before relying on them, because contact details can change.

Do not submit a second application merely because the first one is pending. First determine whether the application is still under review, whether American Express needs information, or whether a final adverse-action notice has been issued. The steps in this article for a denial begin after the issuer has actually declined the application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what an adverse-action notice must contain
Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the CFPB says a creditor that rejects an application must send an adverse-action notice stating the specific reasons or explaining how to obtain them if you ask within 60 days. If a credit report was used, the notice should identify the reporting company and explain your right to request a free report from that company within 60 days, along with information about correcting errors.
Regulation B generally requires a creditor to notify an applicant within 30 days after receiving a completed application. The notice must provide the specific reasons for adverse action or explain how to obtain them. The official interpretation says the reasons must accurately describe the principal factors actually considered. This 30-day notification rule is not the same as American Express’s separate advice to wait 30 days before reapplying.

Read the notice for the exact reason rather than treating a generic label as a diagnosis. The sources do not establish a universal approval score, a fixed number of recent accounts that causes denial, or any other threshold that predicts your result. Only your own notice and the issuer’s explanation can identify the factors used in your case.

Choose the right next step
| Problem you are addressing | Who handles it | Action | Key timing or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want the issuer to explain or reconsider the decision | American Express | Call 1-800-567-1083 and request information or a review | American Express does not guarantee a changed decision |
| The notice relies on inaccurate credit-report information | The named bureau and the information furnisher | Request the bureau’s free report and dispute each error with both parties | Request the report within 60 days of the adverse-action notice |
| You are considering another application | You, after reviewing the notice and corrections | Wait at least 30 days from receipt of the decline letter, following American Express’s guidance | Waiting does not guarantee approval |

A practical call and dispute checklist
Before contacting American Express
- Have the adverse-action notice and its date in front of you.
- Underline the stated reason and any named bureau.
- Prepare concise questions: What information was considered? Which factor controlled the decision? Can the application be reviewed?
- Do not claim that an error was corrected until you have documentation showing the correction.
Before filing a credit-report dispute
- Request the report from the bureau named in the notice and stay within the 60-day window for the free copy.
- Identify the exact inaccurate entry and explain why it is wrong.
- Send supporting records to both the bureau and the company that furnished the information.
- Keep copies and delivery records, then review the bureau’s response and an updated report.
Before reapplying
- Confirm that at least 30 days have passed since you received the decline letter.
- Complete any issuer review or report dispute relevant to the stated reason.
- Understand that a corrected report or successful review does not compel approval.
- Avoid repeated applications used only as a workaround; each new request can create another inquiry under the applicable application flow.
What not to assume
A denial does not reveal a universal score cutoff, and no general source can determine why a particular applicant was rejected. Do not assume that calling will reverse the decision, that disputing a report will lead to approval, or that waiting 30 days changes the underlying underwriting factors. Those outcomes depend on information available to American Express and on the accuracy of the individual credit file.
The most defensible sequence is therefore narrow and evidence-based: use the notice, ask American Express for clarification or review, correct demonstrable report errors through the bureau-and-furnisher process, and follow the issuer’s 30-day reapplication guidance only if you still choose to apply.
