A lower-than-expected VA disability deposit does not identify its own cause. The difference may come from the rate for your disability percentage and dependents, a debt withholding, a dependent-status change, another adjustment listed by VA, or payment timing after an award. Compare the payment notice with the correct VA rate table, inspect VA debt information, review dependent eligibility, and then contact the office named on your notice if the records still do not explain the amount.
VA describes disability compensation as a monthly, tax-free payment for Veterans whose service caused or worsened an illness or injury. Your individual decision notice and account history—not the deposit alone—control the explanation for a specific payment.

Start by identifying exactly which payment is short
Before recalculating anything, write down the deposit date, amount, and payment period shown in your VA account history or payment notice. Compare that information with the award or adjustment notice you received. A deposit made after a rating increase may not represent a full month at the new rate because the award’s effective date and the first payable month can differ.

VA’s statutory payment rule means compensation cannot begin before the first day of the month after the effective date. For example, an award effective during one month may produce payable compensation beginning on the first day of the following month. The dates in your individual decision notice determine how that rule applies; do not infer the payable period from the day money arrived in your bank account.

Use the correct VA rate table
VA compensation depends on your disability rating and qualifying family circumstances. Match all three of these items before deciding that a payment is wrong:
- Your combined disability rating, not an individual condition’s percentage.
- The payment period and the rate table effective during that period.
- The dependents VA recognizes for your award.
The VA rate guidance currently displayed for 2026 applies rates effective December 1, 2025. An older article or calculator can therefore produce a different figure even when your rating has not changed. Use the official table for the applicable period rather than a prior-year amount.
Dependent additions are not available at every rating
Veterans rated at 10% or 20% do not receive a higher compensation rate for dependents. At other qualifying ratings, the table can add amounts for a spouse, children, or certain dependent parents. Severe disability classifications can also change the applicable payment. Confirm that the table row matches your rating and the family details VA has on file.

Do not compare your payment with another Veteran’s amount unless the rating, effective period, and dependent circumstances are the same. A difference between two deposits can be correct even when both Veterans receive the same percentage rating.
Compare possible causes with the evidence in your records

Check for a debt, overpayment, or withholding
A gross compensation rate and the amount deposited in your account are not always the same. VA may withhold part of a benefit to recover an overpayment or another debt. Sign in to VA’s debt-management service and review the benefit-overpayment amount, status, and available help options.
How an overpayment can arise
VA identifies several common scenarios:
- You did not report a life change before it affected eligibility or the payment amount.
- You reported a change, but VA could not process it before the next payment was issued.
- An administrative mistake, such as a duplicate payment, sent more money than was due.
Read the deduction code, collection letter, and payment remittance detail together. The debt balance shown online may explain why the deposit is lower even when the underlying disability rate has not changed. If the balance, dates, or reason do not make sense, contact the VA office listed on the notice rather than estimating the withheld amount.

Review every dependent-status change
Dependent payments can change when a child’s age, school attendance, graduation date, marriage, or other eligibility fact changes. VA also instructs Veterans to report a dependent’s death. If VA continues paying the higher dependent rate after eligibility ends, the excess can become a debt and VA may recover it by withholding future benefits.

- Compare the dependent information in your VA account with the facts and dates in your records.
- Identify the specific event or date that VA has recorded incorrectly.
- Follow VA’s dependent-management instructions to submit the correction.
- Save a copy of the form, supporting documents, and submission confirmation.
If a dependent remains eligible, provide the information VA requests instead of assuming the higher rate will restart automatically. A corrected record may require a new decision before the payment changes.
Consider other factors that can reduce compensation
VA lists military retirement pay, disability severance pay, separation pay, and felony incarceration in a federal, state, or local facility for more than 60 days among factors that can make compensation lower than it otherwise would be. These are possibilities, not diagnoses. Your notice and circumstances must show whether one applies.

Do not conclude that a rating reduction occurred merely because one deposit is smaller. A reduction, an offset, a debt collection, and a partial first payment have different notices and appeal or correction paths. Look for the document that describes the change before taking action.

If the amount relates to a VA health-care copay rather than disability compensation, use the copay dispute process. VA says a copay dispute can be submitted through Ask VA, by mail, or in person at a VA medical center.
The timing rules are specific to copay charges. Disputing within 90 days after the charges first appear on the statement prevents collection action while VA resolves the dispute. After 120 days, VA may transfer the debt to the Treasury Department. Those deadlines should not be applied automatically to every disability-benefit overpayment; identify the type of debt on the statement first.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the payment. Record the deposit date, amount, payment period, and any reference or remittance information.
- Read the latest notice. Look for an award, reduction, dependent adjustment, debt, or withholding explanation.
- Match the rate. Use the VA table effective for the payment period, your combined rating, and the dependents VA recognizes. Remember that 10% and 20% ratings do not receive a dependent-rate increase.
- Check award timing. Compare the effective date with the first payable month; payment cannot start before the first day of the month after the effective date.
- Inspect debt information. Use VA’s debt-management service to review any benefit-overpayment balance, status, and collection details.
- Verify dependents. Check age, school attendance, graduation, marriage, death, and other eligibility events, and submit corrections with supporting records.
- Classify any copay debt. If the statement concerns a medical copay, use the copay dispute route and its separate 90-day and 120-day rules.
- Contact the right VA channel. If the figures still do not reconcile, call or message the office or benefit channel named on the decision, debt, or payment notice.
Prepare before contacting VA
Have the relevant documents open when you call or submit a message:
- The decision notice showing your rating and effective date.
- The payment notice or account-history entry for the short deposit.
- The applicable rate-table row and your calculation.
- Debt letters, deduction codes, remittance details, and the online overpayment balance.
- Dependent records, school or marriage documentation, and proof of any correction you submitted.
- Bank information showing the date and amount actually deposited.
Ask the representative to identify whether the difference is a rate calculation, a withheld amount, or a payment-timing issue. Request the applicable notice date, effective date, and balance if the explanation involves a debt. Keep notes of the contact and any reference number.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a prior-year rate. The 2026 table shown by VA is effective December 1, 2025; an older table may be wrong for your payment period.
- Adding dependents to a 10% or 20% calculation. Those ratings do not receive a higher rate for dependents.
- Confusing a net deposit with the gross rate. A withholding can reduce what reaches your bank without changing the underlying award rate.
- Assuming a dependent event is harmless. Continued payment after eligibility ends can create an overpayment recoverable from future benefits.
- Applying copay deadlines to every VA debt. The 90-day and 120-day rules described above concern copay charges, not all compensation overpayments.
- Relying on the deposit date alone. Effective and payable dates in the decision notice determine how a new award is paid.
When the records still do not explain the amount
Contact the specific VA office or benefit channel named in your notice rather than using a generic explanation from a calculator or another Veteran’s payment. VA’s debt information distinguishes benefit-overpayment assistance from copay-bill assistance, so describe the debt type accurately. Provide the payment date, amount, notice details, and the calculation you made. The VA record controls the answer for your case, and only the responsible office can confirm a withholding, correction, or effective-date issue.
