What to Do If Your Tax Refund Interest Is Missing or Incorrect

If your federal refund arrived without expected interest, first determine whether the IRS actually owed interest. Refund interest depends on the return due date, when the IRS received a processable return, the date it issued or offset the refund, and the applicable quarterly rates. A processing period of up to about 45 days generally does not create an interest payment.

If the payment itself appears short, request an IRS review and, when appropriate, submit an informal claim or Form 843 within six years of the scheduled overpayment. If the problem is a missing or incorrect Form 1099-INT, report taxable interest based on the best available information, request a corrected form from the issuer, and amend the return with Form 1040-X if a later correction changes what you filed.

First identify which problem you have

“Missing refund interest” can describe two different situations. In the first, the IRS paid your tax overpayment but you believe the check or direct deposit did not include all interest owed. In the second, the IRS paid interest but the information return documenting it—usually Form 1099-INT—is missing or has an incorrect amount or taxpayer detail. The remedies and tax-reporting steps are different.

What you received Question to answer Likely next step
Refund payment that seems too low Did the IRS owe interest after applying its administrative period, timing rules, and any offset? Reconstruct the dates, then ask the IRS to review the calculation. Use an informal claim or Form 843 if additional overpayment interest appears due.
Form 1099-INT never arrived Was taxable interest paid even though the statement was not delivered? Report taxable interest anyway; check your IRS records and ask the issuer for the statement or a corrected copy.
Form 1099-INT has a wrong amount or detail Does the information differ from the issuer’s records or your refund notice? Ask the issuer for a corrected Form 1099-INT. If the correction changes an already-filed return, file Form 1040-X.

State tax agencies use their own refund and interest rules. The federal procedure below applies to an IRS overpayment and federally issued information returns, not automatically to a state refund.

How the IRS determines whether refund interest is due

The interest period does not necessarily start when you filed

For a federal overpayment, the start date depends on the applicable return due date, the date a late return was received, the date the IRS received a return it could process, and other facts in the account. The IRS generally stops interest when it issues the refund or applies it as a credit against an outstanding liability. That means the number of days between filing and payment is not, by itself, the interest-bearing period.

The 45-day administrative period

The IRS generally has an administrative period—typically 45 days—to issue a refund without paying interest on that period. Do not assume that every day your refund was pending earns interest. Count the dates that apply to your return and account rather than treating the entire wait as an interest delay.

Offsets can explain a smaller payment

An overpayment may be offset against an unpaid federal or other qualifying liability before the remaining amount is sent to you. The IRS generally stops refund interest when it makes the payment or the offset. Compare the refund notice, deposit or check, and any separate offset notice before concluding that interest was omitted.

  • The filed federal return and the return’s original due date.
  • Proof of filing, including the accepted electronic-filing record or mailing and delivery evidence.
  • Proof of tax payments, withholding, or estimated payments that created the overpayment.
  • The IRS refund notice and the date and amount of the direct deposit or check.
  • Any notice showing that the refund was applied to another liability.
  • Correspondence about a delayed, rejected, or corrected return.

These records let you separate an ordinary processing period from a period for which interest may be payable. They also support an explanation if you submit a claim. Keep the original documents and a written calculation showing how you reached your proposed amount.

Use the rate for each quarter in the calculation

Federal overpayment rates change quarterly. A refund period that crosses a quarter can require more than one rate, with daily compounding applied within each period. As announced by the IRS on August 21, 2026, the individual overpayment rate for October 1 through December 31, 2026, is 7% per year, compounded daily. That 7% rate is period-specific; it is not a universal rate for every tax year or every day of a refund delay.

2026 quarter Individual overpayment rate Dates covered
Q1 7% annually, compounded daily January 1–March 31, 2026
Q2 6% annually, compounded daily April 1–June 30, 2026
Q3 7% annually, compounded daily July 1–September 30, 2026
Q4 7% annually, compounded daily October 1–December 31, 2026

For a rough check, separate the eligible days by rate quarter and apply each quarter’s annual rate on a daily-compounding basis to the overpayment balance. The IRS’s own account calculation controls; your estimate is evidence for a review request, not a guarantee of the final amount.

Ask the IRS to review interest that appears understated

Start with the notice or individual assistance channel

Use the telephone number printed on your IRS notice when one is available. If there is no suitable notice, use the IRS’s general individual assistance channel. Explain that you are asking about interest on a federal overpayment, not asking to remove interest charged on a tax debt. Have your timeline and calculation in front of you.

Submit an informal claim or Form 843

The IRS permits an informal claim or Form 843, Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement, for a taxpayer who believes the IRS underpaid interest on an eligible overpayment. Include:

  • Your name, address, taxpayer identification information, and the tax period involved.
  • The overpayment amount and the date you believe the overpayment was scheduled or became payable.
  • The date the IRS received a processable return, the refund or offset date, and the dates used to exclude the administrative period.
  • Your quarter-by-quarter rate calculation, including the number of days and daily compounding method.
  • A concise explanation of why the interest paid was missing or lower than the amount shown by your calculation.
  • Copies of notices and supporting records, while retaining the originals.

The IRS says it must receive this request within six years of the scheduled overpayment. Send it using the instructions that apply to Form 843 or the IRS correspondence address provided for your account, and keep proof of delivery. The six-year limit concerns this overpayment-interest request; it is not the same as the rules for correcting a tax return or disputing a separate liability.

Do not use the wrong interest-abatement process

An interest-abatement request concerns interest the taxpayer owes on an unpaid tax liability and has different eligibility standards and filing limits. It does not substitute for an overpayment-interest claim. State clearly that your issue is insufficient interest paid on a refund or credit.

Handle a missing Form 1099-INT

Taxability does not depend on receiving the form

Refund interest may be taxable interest. The IRS states: “You must report all taxable and tax-exempt interest on your federal income tax return, even if you don’t receive a Form 1099-INT or Form 1099-OID.” A missing statement does not turn taxable interest into tax-free income.

IRS Topic 403 says recipients of at least $10 of interest generally should receive Form 1099-INT or Form 1099-OID. The $10 figure describes the payer’s usual information-reporting obligation; it is not a blanket exemption from reporting taxable interest. Special circumstances and exceptions can affect whether a statement is issued, so use the actual interest amount shown in your records.

Check your records while requesting the statement

Ask the payer—often the IRS or another entity shown on your notice—for the missing form or a corrected copy. The IRS Tax Tip 2026-25, dated March 26, 2026, says taxpayers with an IRS Individual Online Account may view and download available wage and income transcripts, including Form 1099-INT; transcript availability can vary. A transcript is a useful cross-check, but retain the refund notice and payment records as well.

Report the amount when the form is unavailable

If you know the taxable interest amount, include it on the appropriate interest line of your federal return even while you wait for a form. Keep a note explaining how you determined the amount and preserve correspondence with the issuer. If a statement later arrives with a different amount, compare it with the filed return rather than automatically replacing your original figure.

Correct an incorrect Form 1099-INT

Request a corrected form from the issuer

Publication 550 instructs taxpayers to ask the issuer for a corrected Form 1099-INT when the amount or other information is wrong. Contact the issuer promptly, identify the tax year and account, and describe the specific field that needs correction. Ask for written confirmation if the issuer says no correction is necessary.

Amend a return that used the wrong information

If the corrected form arrives after you filed and it changes the information used on your return, IRS guidance says to file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Explain the change and attach or retain the corrected information as the form instructions require. Recalculate the tax, interest income, and any resulting refund or balance due; do not amend merely because a duplicate form arrived with the same figures.

When the correction does not change the return

If the corrected detail does not affect income, tax, credit, or withholding reported on your return, keep the corrected statement with your records and follow any IRS notice instructions. An amendment is generally relevant when the filed figures actually change.

Decision checklist

  1. Confirm whether the discrepancy is a payment problem, a missing information return, or an incorrect information return.
  2. Match the refund notice to the deposit or check and look for an offset notice.
  3. List the return due date, filing and receipt dates, processable-return date, refund or offset date, and rate quarters crossed.
  4. Exclude the IRS administrative period, typically 45 days, from your assumed interest period.
  5. Calculate an estimate using the applicable quarterly rates and daily compounding.
  6. For apparent underpayment, contact the IRS and submit an informal claim or Form 843 within six years of the scheduled overpayment.
  7. For missing or incorrect Form 1099-INT, request the document or correction from the issuer and report taxable interest regardless of whether the form arrived.
  8. If a later correction changes an already-filed return, prepare Form 1040-X and keep all supporting records.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting every day between filing and payment as interest-bearing.
  • Applying the October–December 2026 rate of 7% to an earlier or later quarter without checking that quarter’s announced rate.
  • Ignoring an offset that reduced the amount sent to you.
  • Treating the $10 Form 1099-INT threshold as permission not to report smaller taxable interest.
  • Waiting for a form before reporting a known taxable amount.
  • Filing an interest-abatement request for interest the IRS failed to pay on your overpayment.
  • Using the federal Form 843 process for a state refund without checking the state agency’s rules.

What outcome to expect

The IRS will compare your dates, account history, payment or offset records, and calculation with its statutory interest computation. The agency may determine that no additional interest is due because the payment was within the administrative period, the relevant start date was later than you assumed, a liability was offset, or a different quarterly rate applied. If the records support an omission or understatement, the IRS can adjust the overpayment interest. Keep the response and any revised statement with the tax-year file in case the corrected amount affects a return already filed.
