What to Do If Your Student Loan Autopay Payment Fails

If a student-loan autopay does not clear, first check both records: your bank account and your loan-servicer account. Determine whether the debit is pending, rejected, absent, or simply not posted yet. Then contact the servicer promptly, confirm the exact amount due, and ask whether you should make a one-time payment. Do not send a second payment while the original debit may still be pending.

The consequences depend on the loan. For a federal loan, Federal Student Aid says delinquency starts the day after a missed payment, reporting to the three major credit bureaus can begin at 90 days delinquent, and default occurs after 270 days. Those milestones are federal guidance; private-loan contracts and servicing practices can differ.

1. Check what actually happened

A failed-looking autopay can mean several different things. Your bank may show a pending debit while the servicer has not posted it. The bank may have rejected or returned the transaction. Or the servicer may have received the money but not updated the payment history yet. Treat the bank record and the loan record as separate pieces of evidence.

Review your bank account

  • Look for a pending, completed, reversed, returned, or rejected debit from the lender or servicer.
  • Check the amount. It may differ from what you expected if your required payment changed, a prior balance carried forward, or an extra amount was scheduled.
  • Note the transaction date, status, amount, and any bank message or fee. A bank overdraft or returned-payment fee is separate from any fee the loan contract may allow.

Review the servicer account

  • Open the payment history and confirm whether the installment is posted, pending, returned, or missing.
  • Check the current amount due, past-due balance, next due date, and whether autopay still shows as active.
  • Save screenshots or download statements showing the status before you contact support.

Federal Student Aid says borrowers can make payments through the servicer’s website and should contact the servicer for account-specific questions. A bank withdrawal that is not visible on the loan account does not by itself prove that the payment failed, and a missing bank withdrawal does not prove that no payment will later post.

Pending, delayed, or failed?

What you see What it may mean What to do next
Bank debit is pending; servicer shows no posting The payment may still be processing. Ask the servicer whether it has received or scheduled the debit before making another payment.
Bank shows rejected or returned debit The bank did not complete the withdrawal. Ask the servicer for the exact amount due and an approved replacement-payment method.
No bank debit; servicer shows past due Autopay may not have run, may have been disabled, or may have failed before reaching the bank. Contact the servicer immediately and ask whether a one-time payment is required.
Bank shows completed debit; servicer has not posted it The servicer may be waiting to apply or reconcile the payment. Provide the transaction date and amount and request a posting-status review.

Official sources do not establish one retry schedule, universal bank return code, or guaranteed duplicate-payment remedy for every servicer. Ask your own bank and servicer rather than relying on a general timetable.

2. Contact the correct provider quickly

Federal Student Aid advises borrowers who miss a payment to contact the organization that handles billing and other services for the loan immediately. Calling promptly gives the servicer a chance to explain the status, correct a servicing issue, and tell you how to become current.

Federal loans

For Direct and Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) loans, contact the loan servicer listed in your StudentAid.gov account or on your statement. If you do not know the servicer, use the My Aid section of your StudentAid.gov account. Federal Student Aid also lists the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 for help locating federal-loan information.

Federal Perkins Loan borrowers may need to contact the school that made the loan. If a Perkins loan was assigned to the Department of Education, Federal Student Aid identifies ECSI as the servicer. Confirm the applicable contact before sending money.

Private loans

Use the lender or servicer shown on your statement or online account. Federal repayment-plan rules, federal delinquency statements, and Department of Education fee policies do not automatically apply to a private loan. Ask the private lender what its contract says about returned payments, late fees, credit reporting, temporary relief, and reinstating autopay.

Questions to ask on the call or secure message

  1. “Did you receive, reject, or return this month’s debit?”
  2. “What is the exact amount required to make the account current today?”
  3. “Should I make a one-time payment, and which method should I use?”
  4. “Is another debit already scheduled or likely to be attempted?”
  5. “Is autopay still active, and what must I do to verify the next withdrawal?”
  6. “Will this event create a fee or affect credit reporting on my account?”

Record the date, representative’s name or identification number, instructions, and confirmation number. If the provider gives verbal instructions, request written confirmation through its secure message system when available.

3. Replace the missed payment without creating a duplicate

If the servicer confirms that the payment was not received and tells you to pay, use the servicer’s official website or another method it specifically approves. Enter the amount the servicer confirms, not an estimate based on an old statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the original debit’s status. Do not pay again while the bank or servicer still shows the first transaction as pending unless the servicer tells you how to coordinate the payments.
  2. Ask for the current payoff-to-date amount. This may include a past-due installment or other account-specific amount.
  3. Submit the replacement payment through an official channel. Check the web address and account details before authorizing a bank transfer or card payment.
  4. Save proof. Keep the confirmation number, timestamp, amount, and payment method.
  5. Verify posting. Recheck the servicer’s payment history and balance after the provider’s stated processing period. If it does not post, contact the servicer with the confirmation details.
  6. Watch the bank account. Continue checking for a late debit from the original autopay. If both payments post, ask the servicer about its documented refund or application process.

The available guidance does not promise a universal processing time or a single solution if two payments are taken. That is why confirming the first debit before authorizing the second is important.

4. If you cannot afford the payment

A failed autopay can reveal a cash-flow problem rather than a technical one. Tell the servicer that affordability is the issue and ask about available relief instead of allowing the account to remain unanswered.

Income-driven repayment for federal loans

Federal borrowers can ask whether an income-driven repayment plan is available and which payment would apply to their circumstances. The servicer can explain eligibility, the application process, required income information, and how a change would affect the next bill. Do not assume an application automatically pauses a payment; ask when a new amount becomes effective and what to do about the installment already due.

Deferment or forbearance

Depending on the loan and your circumstances, deferment or forbearance may temporarily pause or reduce required payments. Federal Student Aid cautions that interest may accrue during these periods and that using relief can affect discharge eligibility. Ask the servicer to explain the interest treatment, capitalization rules if applicable, start and end dates, and whether you must continue paying while a request is reviewed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Private-loan hardship options

Private lenders set their own relief programs and eligibility rules. Ask whether the lender offers a temporary payment reduction, hardship forbearance, modified schedule, or another arrangement. Get the terms in writing, including the new payment, total duration, interest treatment, and what happens when the arrangement ends.

5. Understand the federal delinquency timeline

One failed debit does not mean a federal loan is immediately in default. Federal Student Aid’s July 2026 guidance describes these milestones:

Time after a missed federal payment What the guidance says Why it matters
The day after the missed payment The loan becomes delinquent or past due. Contact the servicer immediately and resolve the payment or request appropriate help.
90 days delinquent The servicer reports the delinquency to the three major national credit bureaus. Credit-report consequences may begin at this stage.
270 days delinquent The delinquent federal loan goes into default. Default is a substantially more serious status than the first missed installment and can trigger additional collection consequences.

These thresholds apply to the federal guidance described above. They should not be presented as a universal rule for private loans, whose contracts and reporting practices may differ. Ask the private lender for its specific policy.

6. Check fees and the temporary federal autopay benefit

Late fees and bank charges are different questions

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says loans owned by the Department of Education do not charge late fees. That statement concerns ED-owned federal loans. It does not determine whether your bank charged an overdraft or returned-payment fee, and it does not establish the fee policy for a private loan. Ask both institutions to identify any charge and the rule supporting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 1% auto-pay interest-rate reduction

Federal Student Aid’s current repayment information says that, beginning July 1, 2026, the auto-pay interest-rate reduction for eligible Direct Loans is temporarily 1%, up from 0.25%. The page describes eligibility for Direct Loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2012, excludes certain other federal loan types from the additional reduction, and sets the temporary end date at June 30, 2028. Continued enrollment in autopay and repayment is required, and eligibility depends on the individual loan.

Because the benefit is date-sensitive and loan-specific, ask the servicer whether your loan qualifies, whether a failed debit changed your enrollment, and how the reduction will appear on your account. Do not assume a single rejected payment permanently removes or automatically restores the benefit.

7. Escalate an unresolved servicing problem

If the servicer cannot explain a missing payment, applies a confirmed payment incorrectly, or does not correct a suspected servicing error, assemble a concise record before escalating:

  • Bank statements or transaction screenshots showing the debit status.
  • Servicer statements and payment-history entries.
  • Dates and amounts of attempted payments.
  • Messages, call notes, representative names, and confirmation numbers.
  • The specific correction you are requesting.

For a private or federal servicing complaint, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau provides a student-loan complaint channel. For federal-aid questions, use Federal Student Aid’s official contact or feedback route. An escalation creates a documented review request; it does not guarantee a particular outcome or suspend the obligation to make a payment unless the provider confirms that in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Prevent the next autopay failure

  • After the account is corrected, verify the next due amount and autopay date in the servicer portal.
  • Keep enough available balance for the confirmed installment, allowing for other scheduled transactions.
  • Update the servicer promptly if you change banks, account numbers, or payment methods.
  • Read notices about servicing transfers, changed due dates, and revised payment amounts.
  • Set a calendar reminder several days before the due date to check both the bank and servicer records.
  • Keep a running payment log with the due date, amount, authorization date, posting date, and confirmation number.

Autopay is a convenience, not proof that an installment was successfully credited. Checking both accounts each cycle gives you an opportunity to correct a failed or misapplied payment before the federal delinquency milestones become relevant.
