What to Do if Your Social Security Payment Seems Lower After the 2026 COLA

A cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) can raise the benefit SSA uses in its calculation without increasing the amount deposited into your bank account by the same percentage. For 2026, the Social Security COLA is 2.8%. To find out why your payment looks lower, first confirm whether you are comparing the same payment month, then compare your deposit with the exact benefit and deductions on your personalized COLA notice. If the notice does not explain the difference, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) with the notice and your deposit information.

Why a 2.8% COLA may not produce a 2.8% larger deposit

The 2026 COLA applies to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Social Security benefits payable in January 2026 reflect the adjustment. Increased SSI payments began with the December 31, 2025 payment. The adjustment changes the benefit amount used in SSA’s calculation, but your final deposit is a net amount after SSA applies the rules and deductions that apply to your record.

SSA can apply factors related to when you claimed retirement benefits, subtract Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premiums or other applicable offsets, and then round or truncate the result. Because those steps occur after the COLA is applied, the increase in your deposit can be smaller than 2.8%, exactly 2.8%, or, in some cases, appear to be a decrease when a new deduction or recovery starts at the same time.

SSA estimated that average monthly benefits for all retired workers would rise from $2,015 before the adjustment to $2,071 after it. That $56 difference is an estimate for the average retired worker, not a forecast of your own payment. Individual benefits, deductions and timing differ.

First check whether the payment is late rather than lower

A missing payment can look like a reduction if you check your account before the scheduled date. For most Social Security beneficiaries, the 2026 schedule is based on the day of the month you were born:

Birth date Usual payment day
1–10 Second Wednesday of the month
11–20 Third Wednesday of the month
21–31 Fourth Wednesday of the month

There are exceptions. People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 follow a different arrangement, and some people who receive both Social Security and SSI have payments on different dates. Use your own SSA schedule and prior payment pattern rather than assuming the Wednesday rule applies to you.

“If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security,” the Social Security Administration says in its 2026–2027 payment schedule.

Check the transaction date shown by your bank or payment service, not only the date you expect money to be available. If the scheduled date and the three-day allowance have passed, move to the notice and account checks below. Do not treat an early-month gap as a benefit cut until the payment window has elapsed.

Use your personalized COLA notice as the starting record

SSA’s notice gives the exact dollar amount for your new benefit, the effective timing and the deductions SSA used. Eligible beneficiaries can view it in the Message Center of a personal my Social Security account, and SSA also mails notices. The notice is more useful than an average-benefit figure because it is tied to your earnings record and current deductions.

  1. Open the COLA notice in your my Social Security Message Center, or locate the mailed notice for the 2026 adjustment.
  2. Write down the new gross benefit amount and the month it takes effect.
  3. List every deduction or offset shown, including any Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premium.
  4. Compare the net amount on the notice with the deposit that actually arrived.
  5. Check whether the deposit you are reviewing is the first payment affected by the new amount or an earlier payment made under the old schedule.

Make the comparison using the same period. A January 2026 Social Security payment may be deposited on a date determined by the payment schedule, while the notice may describe the benefit payable for January. SSI’s increased amount began with the December 31, 2025 payment, so SSI recipients should not use a January deposit date as the only indicator of when the change started.

Reconcile gross benefit, deductions and net deposit

Once timing is clear, perform a three-line reconciliation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Gross benefit: the post-COLA amount stated by SSA.
  • Listed deductions: premiums, offsets or recoveries identified on the notice.
  • Net deposit: gross benefit minus those deductions, after SSA’s rounding or truncation rules.

The COLA adjusts the primary insurance amount. SSA then applies factors associated with early or delayed retirement and any other rules on the record. A person who claimed early retirement, for example, does not receive a simple percentage applied to an unadjusted full-retirement amount; the COLA is applied within SSA’s calculation. Rounding and truncation can also change the final cents or dollar amount.

A Medicare Supplementary Medical Insurance premium is one documented example of an offset that can reduce the amount reaching your bank account. If the premium shown on the new notice differs from the prior notice, that difference can absorb some or all of the COLA increase. The notice should identify the deduction; do not infer a premium change solely from the deposit.

Do not substitute the $2,015-to-$2,071 average for your own calculation. It describes all retired workers as a group and does not account for your claiming age, benefit record or deductions.

Check for an overpayment recovery notice

SSA may reduce a payment when it determines that you were paid more than you were due and begins recovery. An overpayment notice explains why SSA believes the overpayment occurred, the amount it says is owed and the response options. This is a different situation from a routine COLA deduction, so look for a separate notice rather than assuming the COLA itself was reversed.

If the notice says… Relevant action
You disagree that an overpayment occurred or disagree with the amount Appeal the overpayment decision using the instructions and deadline in the SSA notice.
You agree an overpayment exists but repayment would be unaffordable or unfair Request a waiver; SSA will review whether collection should be waived under its rules.
You can repay but the proposed monthly recovery is too high Request a change to the recovery rate.

Keep the overpayment notice with your COLA notice. An appeal challenges the decision or amount; a waiver asks SSA not to collect under qualifying circumstances; a recovery-rate request addresses the size of the monthly withholding. Choose the option that matches the problem and follow the notice’s submission instructions.

Know which problem you are actually seeing

Classifying the symptom prevents you from taking the wrong step:

What happened Most useful first check
No payment has arrived yet Verify your scheduled date, applicable exception and the three-day allowance.
Payment arrived, but the amount is lower than before Compare the gross amount and each deduction on the personalized COLA notice with the deposit.
Gross benefit rose, but net deposit barely changed Look for a newly listed or increased premium, offset, rounding or truncation.
A separate letter mentions money owed Read the overpayment notice and consider an appeal, waiver or recovery-rate request.
The notice and deposit still cannot be reconciled Contact SSA using the route shown on the official notice.

Contact SSA when the records do not explain the difference

Public COLA guidance cannot identify the cause of an individual payment change without that person’s benefit record and current deductions. Contact SSA when the deposit remains inconsistent with the personalized notice, when a listed deduction is unfamiliar, or when an expected payment has not arrived after the schedule and three-day allowance.

Have the following ready:

  • Your personalized COLA notice, including the effective month and listed deductions.
  • The date and exact amount of the deposit, plus the preceding payment for comparison.
  • Your SSA correspondence, including any overpayment notice.
  • Details of whether you receive Social Security, SSI, or both.

Use the contact method and account instructions printed on your SSA notice. Ask the representative to identify the gross benefit, each deduction or offset and the net amount for the payment in question. If SSA’s explanation differs from the written notice, ask how to obtain a corrected notice or what formal review process applies.

How the 2026 dates affect different beneficiaries

Social Security retirement, survivor and disability benefits

For these benefits, the 2.8% COLA applies to benefits payable in January 2026. The actual deposit date follows the payment schedule that applies to your record, usually the second, third or fourth Wednesday based on birth date, unless an exception applies.

Supplemental Security Income

Increased SSI payments began with the December 31, 2025 payment. If you receive both SSI and Social Security, the two programs may use different payment dates. Review each notice and each transaction separately instead of combining them into one monthly comparison.

People with an older payment arrangement

Beneficiaries who started receiving payments before May 1997 may not follow the standard birth-date Wednesday schedule. Their payment timing should be verified against their own SSA information before concluding that a payment is late.

Common mistakes that make a normal adjustment look wrong

  • Comparing different months: A payment made before the effective month is not the right baseline for a January 2026 COLA comparison.
  • Comparing gross to net: The benefit printed on a notice may be before deductions, while the bank shows the amount after deductions.
  • Using an average as a personal estimate: The $56 average increase is not an entitlement or a calculation for every retiree.
  • Ignoring a separate overpayment letter: Recovery can reduce a deposit independently of the COLA calculation.
  • Assuming the headline percentage controls the deposit: Factors, offsets, rounding and truncation are applied to the individual record.
  • Calling before the payment window closes: The schedule allows three additional mailing days after an expected date.

A practical worksheet for resolving the discrepancy

Use one row for each payment you are comparing:

Item Earlier payment First payment affected by 2026 COLA
Payment month Enter the month shown in your records Enter the month shown on the COLA notice
Scheduled date Enter the date for your payment arrangement Enter the date for your payment arrangement
Gross benefit Copy from the earlier notice Copy from the personalized COLA notice
Each deduction or offset List separately List separately
Net deposited Copy the bank or card transaction Copy the bank or card transaction

Subtract the listed deductions from the corresponding gross amount and compare the result with the net deposit. If the figures do not align because of a rounding or truncation difference, ask SSA to explain the calculation rather than altering your own numbers. If no deduction explains the change, provide SSA with both columns and request an account-specific review.

What you should expect from the official notice

SSA said the 2026 COLA notice provides exact dates, dollar amounts and deductions. That information lets you distinguish a genuine benefit change from a payment-timing issue. A general announcement can establish the 2.8% national adjustment, but only your notice can establish your new benefit and net amount.

Keep the notice for future comparisons. If a later payment changes again, compare it with the most recent notice and look for a new deduction or recovery document. The record of notices and deposits is also the clearest evidence to provide if SSA must correct an account.

Bottom line for a payment that seems lower

A lower-looking deposit after the 2026 COLA does not by itself show that SSA failed to apply the adjustment. Confirm the payment date, read the personalized notice, separate gross benefit from net deposit, and identify any Medicare premium, other offset or overpayment recovery. If those records do not explain the amount, contact SSA with the notice and deposit details; an individual account review is required to determine the cause.
