The COLA changes your calculated benefit, while Medicare premiums, other deductions, payment timing, rounding and truncation can change the amount that reaches your bank account. First identify the benefit month and payment type, then compare your personalized Social Security notice with the deposit. If those figures still conflict after the adjustment should have taken effect, ask the Social Security Administration (SSA) to explain your record.
For 2026, SSA announced a 2.8% COLA on October 24, 2025. Social Security payments reflecting that adjustment began in January 2026. SSI payments for January were issued on December 31, 2025, because of the holiday payment calendar.

Start with the payment date and benefit type
A payment can appear to be missing a COLA when you are looking at the wrong benefit month or comparing different types of payments. Check the date shown in your bank transaction and on your notice, then determine whether the payment is for Social Security retirement, survivors or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or more than one program.

SSI calendars can move a payment into the preceding month without changing the month of benefits it represents. A December 31 deposit may therefore be January SSI, not an extra December payment. Social Security and SSI also have different payment schedules, so a household receiving both may see the increases on different dates.

Find the amount SSA says you should receive
Your personalized COLA notice is the most useful starting point. SSA said its 2026 one-page notices identify the new benefit amount, effective dates and deductions in dollars. Compare that notice with the prior notice rather than calculating an expected deposit by multiplying last year’s bank deposit by 2.8%.
Paper notices
SSA said 2026 notices would be mailed during December. If yours had not arrived, the agency advised waiting until January before contacting it about a missing mailed notice. Timing guidance can change in later years, so use the instructions for the applicable COLA cycle.
Online notices
If you chose electronic notices, check the Message Center in your my Social Security account. Save or print the notice showing the new gross benefit and every listed deduction. That record gives SSA a specific figure to investigate if your deposit differs.

The COLA percentage applies to the benefit calculation, not necessarily to the net amount deposited. SSA starts with your primary insurance amount (PIA), applies the factors relevant to your benefit, and then performs rounding and truncation at specified stages. The resulting dollar amount can differ from a simple percentage calculation based on your old check.

Gross benefit and net payment are different numbers
Your notice may show a higher gross benefit while your bank receives a smaller increase. The net payment is the gross benefit after deductions and offsets. Medicare premiums are a common reason for the difference, but other deductions shown on the notice can also affect the final deposit.
For example, a person whose calculated benefit rises may still see little change if a newly increased premium is withheld at the same time. An unchanged deposit does not, by itself, prove that SSA failed to apply the COLA. Compare the gross amount and each deduction line before drawing that conclusion.
Rounding and truncation affect small differences
SSA’s calculation process does not simply preserve every decimal place from one step to the next. Intermediate and final results are rounded or truncated under the agency’s rules. Two beneficiaries with similar prior payments can therefore receive different dollar increases, and the increase in a net deposit can be less than 2.8% even when the COLA was applied correctly.

SSA reported a standard Medicare Part B premium of $202.90 for 2026. Some beneficiaries pay more because of an income-related adjustment. A higher Part B withholding can absorb part or all of the increase in the calculated Social Security benefit.

Compare the deduction on both notices
Look at the Medicare deduction on your previous notice and your 2026 COLA notice. If the premium changed, subtract the old deduction from the new one and compare that difference with the increase in your gross benefit. Income-related premiums can be higher than the standard amount, so do not assume that $202.90 is the amount withheld from every beneficiary.
If an income-related premium appears wrong
SSA provides appeal and written-reconsideration procedures for a disputed income-related Medicare premium. If your income has fallen because of a qualifying life-changing event, Form SSA-44 may allow you to request a new income-related Medicare adjustment. The form and the notice explaining the determination identify the evidence and filing instructions that apply to your case. Keep copies of what you submit.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the benefit month. Read the payment description, notice and bank transaction together. For SSI, check whether a payment made in the preceding December represents January benefits.
- Confirm the program. Separate Social Security retirement, survivors or disability benefits from SSI, and list each payment if you receive more than one.
- Locate the personalized notice. Use the mailed notice or the Message Center in my Social Security. Record the stated gross benefit, effective date and every deduction.
- Compare gross amounts first. Compare the new gross benefit with the previous gross benefit. Do not compare only the old and new bank deposits.
- Review deductions line by line. Check Medicare Part B, any income-related Medicare amount and every other withholding listed. A deduction change can explain why the net increase is smaller.
- Allow for SSA’s calculation rules. Remember that SSA applies the COLA through the PIA and other applicable factors, with rounding and truncation during the calculation. The exact result depends on your record.
- Check for a timing issue. Make sure the payment you expected was one of the payments scheduled to reflect the 2026 adjustment. A moved SSI payment date can make the calendar look unusual.
- Contact SSA when the figures still do not match. Have the notice, prior notice, payment dates, deposit amounts and deduction details ready. Ask the representative to explain the gross calculation and each deduction separately.
What to ask SSA when the mismatch remains
Use the personalized figures rather than a general question such as “Why did I not get 2.8%?” Ask which benefit month the payment covers, what gross benefit SSA has on record, which COLA-adjusted amount was effective, and how each deduction produced the net payment. Request clarification of any difference between the notice and the deposit.
You can contact SSA or a local Social Security office. The official information available for this issue does not establish one universal correction or appeal path for every possible discrepancy. The appropriate next step depends on whether the disagreement concerns the benefit calculation, a deduction, payment timing or a separate Medicare determination. Follow the instructions on the particular notice you received.

Common situations and the appropriate check
The gross benefit increased, but the deposit barely changed
Review Medicare and other deductions. A higher premium, including an income-related amount, can offset much of the gross increase. The 2026 standard Part B figure is $202.90, but your own deduction may be higher.
The deposit did not change at all
First verify that you are comparing the same benefit type and month. Then compare the gross amounts on the notices. If the gross benefit rose but deductions rose by a similar amount, the unchanged net deposit may be mathematically consistent. If the notice itself shows no expected increase or the payment does not match the notice, contact SSA.
An SSI payment arrived in December
A December 31, 2025 payment can be the January 2026 SSI payment. Use the benefit month shown in your records rather than the calendar month in which the money arrived.

The mailed COLA notice has not arrived
For the 2026 cycle, SSA advised waiting until January before contacting the agency about a missing mailed notice. If you opted into online notices, check the my Social Security Message Center instead.

Do not use the 2026 figure to predict a later COLA
The 2.8% figure applies to 2026 and was announced by SSA on October 24, 2025. COLAs are announced annually. SSA’s COLA summary indicated that the next announcement would be made in October 2026; no 2027 percentage should be inferred from the 2026 rate. Always use the announcement and notice for the year in question.

The practical rule
Judge a COLA by the personalized notice and the gross benefit calculation, not by multiplying your old bank deposit by the announced percentage. Confirm the benefit month, distinguish Social Security from SSI timing, examine Medicare and other deductions, and then ask SSA for a case-specific explanation if the notice and payment still disagree.
