A missing electronic deposit and a smaller-than-usual deposit require different first steps. For a payment that does not appear on the scheduled date, check with your bank or other financial institution before contacting Social Security. If the bank confirms no posting, ask the Social Security Administration (SSA) to review the missing payment. If money arrived but the net amount fell, compare the payment details and recent notices for a deduction or a changed benefit determination.
Do not assume that a lower deposit means your basic benefit was miscalculated. Medicare premiums, overpayment recovery, work-related withholding, voluntary tax withholding, representative fees, garnishments and federal debt collections can all reduce the amount that reaches your account.

Start by identifying which problem you have
Your next step depends on whether the payment is absent or merely smaller. Use this distinction before filing an appeal or changing any account information.
| What you see | Most useful first check | Likely decision maker |
|---|---|---|
| No deposit on the scheduled date | Ask the bank or financial institution whether a posting is delayed or rejected | The bank for posting status; SSA for the benefit payment record |
| A deposit arrived but is lower | Compare gross and net figures with payment details and recent notices | SSA, Medicare-related appeal staff, a court or another federal agency, depending on the deduction |
The amount shown in your account is a net payment. It can differ from the gross benefit stated in an award letter or benefit verification document.

If your scheduled electronic payment is missing
1. Confirm the date and account activity
Check the payment schedule in your SSA information and review the account for a pending, rejected or reversed transaction. Make sure you are looking at the account that normally receives the benefit. A weekend, holiday or internal bank processing issue can affect when a transaction becomes visible, but only the financial institution can confirm its posting status.
2. Contact the bank first
SSA’s missing-payment FAQ gives this instruction: “If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first.” Ask whether an incoming federal payment is held, pending, returned or posted to a different account. Request the representative’s name or reference number and the date of the inquiry.
3. Report the unpaid benefit to SSA if the bank cannot resolve it
If the bank confirms that it did not receive or post the payment, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. You can also contact a local Social Security office. State the scheduled payment date, explain that the bank has been contacted, and ask SSA to review the payment record. SSA says, “We will review the case and if the payment is due, we will replace it.” The agency’s FAQ does not promise a universal replacement time, so do not rely on an advertised number of days.
4. Keep a simple contact record
Write down the scheduled date, the time you contacted the bank, what the bank reported, the date you contacted SSA, and any case or confirmation details. This record helps if you need to call again or explain a gap in rent, utility or medication payments. It is also useful evidence if the bank says the transaction was returned or if SSA asks for the bank’s findings.

If a payment arrived but is lower than expected
Separate a benefit change from a deduction
Compare the gross benefit and each deduction on your payment information, notice or online record. A lower net amount may result from a new or larger deduction even when the underlying benefit calculation has not changed. Look for a notice that names the deduction, gives an effective month and states an appeal or response deadline.
- Medicare Part B or Part D premiums, including an income-related monthly adjustment amount
- Recovery of a Social Security overpayment
- A retirement-benefit reduction connected with earnings before full retirement age
- Voluntary federal income-tax withholding
- Fees for a representative
- Certain garnishments or federal debt collections
Do not compare your deposit with a national average to decide what you are owed. Individual benefits depend on the recipient’s earnings record, claiming history, benefit program and deductions.
Medicare premiums and income-related adjustments
Part B and Part D premiums can be deducted from Social Security. Higher-income beneficiaries may also have an income-related monthly adjustment amount based on tax information. Examine the Medicare premium determination and the income figures used to make it.
If the tax information is wrong, gather documentation showing the correct income. If your income fell because of a qualifying life event, such as a change in work, marriage, divorce or death of a spouse, the applicable relief process is different. SSA’s Medicare premium guidance describes appeal options; follow the instructions and deadline on your determination rather than sending a general payment complaint.

Overpayment recovery
An overpayment notice creates three distinct questions. First, do you disagree that an overpayment occurred or with the amount SSA calculated? Request reconsideration. Second, do you accept that an overpayment exists but believe recovery should be excused because you were without fault or recovery would be unfair or defeat the purpose of the program? Request a waiver. Third, do you agree that money is owed but cannot afford the proposed monthly withholding? Ask SSA to reduce the recovery rate.
SSA’s repayment guidance identifies Form SSA-634 for requesting a different recovery rate. Use the form and the notice’s instructions, and provide a realistic household budget so SSA can evaluate affordability. A reconsideration or waiver request does not mean the withholding automatically stops; check the notice for the effect of filing and any deadline.
Work and retirement benefits before full retirement age
The retirement earnings test can reduce benefits temporarily when you work before full retirement age. It is not a universal explanation for a lower payment: identify the program first. The figures below apply to Social Security retirement beneficiaries in 2026.

| Situation in 2026 | Earnings limit | SSA deduction rule |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for the entire year | $24,480 for the year | $1 in benefits withheld for every $2 earned above the limit |
| Reaching full retirement age during 2026 (earnings before the full-retirement-age month) | $65,160 before that month | $1 in benefits withheld for every $3 earned above the limit |
| Beginning with the month full retirement age is reached | No earnings limit | No retirement-benefit withholding under this earnings test |
For this test, SSA says wages and net self-employment earnings count. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits and other government or military retirement benefits do not count as earnings for the test. If your earnings estimate changes, report it by telephone or through a local office; SSA’s 2026 FAQ says this change cannot be reported online. These rules concern retirement benefits and should not be applied automatically to Supplemental Security Income or disability cases.

Voluntary federal income-tax withholding
You may have elected to withhold federal income tax from your benefit, or changed the election after a tax-planning decision. SSA lists four withholding choices: 7%, 10%, 12% or 22%. Review the election and the effective date in your payment information. You can ask SSA to start, stop or change voluntary withholding.
The percentage withheld is a payment estimate, not your final federal tax bill. Whether benefits are taxable depends on your overall tax situation, including other income and filing status. Coordinate any change with your tax planning rather than treating withholding as proof that SSA changed your gross entitlement.
Garnishments and federal debt collections
A court order or federal collection can reduce a benefit. SSA’s deduction information identifies categories of garnishment and federal debt collection, but the agency that issued the order generally controls the underlying debt. Read the notice for the court or agency contact and follow its dispute procedure. Calling SSA can clarify how the deduction appears on the payment, but SSA may not be able to cancel an order issued by another authority.

Match the issue to the correct benefit program
Retirement earnings limits, Medicare premium adjustments, disability benefits and SSI have different rules. A retirement beneficiary who works may face the earnings test described above, while an SSI recipient’s payment can be affected by income and resource rules that are not measured by that test. Before challenging an amount, identify whether the payment is retirement, survivors, Social Security Disability Insurance or SSI. Use the program name shown on your notice and quote it when you contact SSA.

Choose the right response to a notice
Notice language usually tells you whether the issue is a payment posting, a deduction, or a change in eligibility. Check four items before responding:
- Effective date: Identify the first payment affected and whether the change is one-time or ongoing.
- Reason: Look for terms such as overpayment, Medicare adjustment, earnings, withholding, garnishment or debt collection.
- Deadline: Calendar the response date printed in the notice. Missing it can limit your options.
- Filing route: Use the appeal, reconsideration, waiver or payment-change method specified, rather than sending an unrelated general inquiry.
If you disagree with an overpayment decision, reconsideration addresses whether the overpayment happened or how much it is. A waiver addresses whether SSA should collect it. A lower recovery-rate request addresses the size of the monthly withholding. These are different requests and may require different forms or evidence.

How 2026 benefit figures should be used
SSA announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. Its 2026 fact sheet estimated an average monthly benefit of $2,071 for all retired workers payable in January 2026 after the COLA. That is a population average, not an entitlement calculation. Your own payment can be higher or lower because of your earnings record, claiming age, benefit type, Medicare premiums, taxes and other deductions.
Use the average only as broad context. To determine what you should receive, rely on your personal SSA notice and payment record, not a national statistic or another beneficiary’s deposit.
Common mistakes that delay a solution
- Calling SSA before the bank about a missing electronic deposit: the bank may be able to explain a posting delay or returned transaction immediately.
- Treating net pay as the gross benefit: list every deduction before alleging that the base benefit is wrong.
- Applying the retirement earnings test to every program: confirm that you receive retirement benefits and check your full-retirement-age status.
- Ignoring the notice deadline: an informal phone call does not necessarily preserve an appeal or waiver right.
- Assuming a replacement date: SSA states that it will review and replace a payment if due, but its cited FAQ does not guarantee a processing interval.
- Paying a private service to expedite the case: the relevant remedies are bank investigation, SSA review and the appeal or waiver process named in your notice.
A practical decision path
- If there is no deposit, verify the scheduled date and ask the bank about posting, rejection or return status.
- If the bank cannot locate the payment, contact SSA or a local office with the bank’s response and request a case review.
- If a deposit is present but smaller, compare gross and net amounts and find the notice or payment detail that identifies the deduction.
- For Medicare adjustments, use the determination’s appeal route; for overpayments, choose reconsideration, waiver or a lower recovery-rate request according to the disagreement.
- For work-related changes, confirm the retirement program and 2026 earnings-test rules before reporting a revised estimate.
- For tax withholding, garnishment or federal debt collection, follow the specific change or dispute instructions for that deduction and the responsible agency.
Case-specific answers require your benefit type, payment history, notices, earnings information, Medicare determination and bank records. No general article can calculate the amount owed or establish why an individual payment changed without those records.
