What to do in the first few minutes
A declined payment at a fuel pump is usually resolved fastest by separating a possible pump problem from a card or account problem. Follow this order:

- Read the exact message on the pump. Note whether it says the card, membership, payment, or authorization was declined. Do not keep repeating the same declined transaction; Sam’s Club’s published instruction is to get on-site help.
- Notify the Fuel Station Attendant. Tell the attendant the pump number, the payment method you used, and the wording on the screen. If there is no attendant at the fuel center, go to the Membership Desk inside the club.
- Try another pump. A second pump helps establish whether the first dispenser is the problem. Use the same card only if the attendant advises you to test it; otherwise choose an accepted alternative.
- Use another valid payment method or Scan & Go. Check the signs on that fuel center or ask the attendant before assuming a card or gift card is accepted there.
- Contact your card issuer if the card still fails. The issuer can investigate an authorization that remains declined. Sam’s Club’s public guidance does not identify the cause of an individual decline.
Do not attempt to open, reset, or otherwise tamper with a pump. Fuel-center staff, rather than a customer, should handle a dispenser that appears defective.

The next useful step depends on what changes when you switch pumps or payment methods. The available guidance supports triage, not a remote diagnosis of the decline.

Payment methods Sam’s Club lists for fuel centers
Sam’s Club’s fuel-center guidance lists an active membership requirement, subject to local law; eligible credit and debit cards; Walmart and Sam’s Club gift cards; and Scan & Go. Acceptance can vary by fuel center, so use the pump sign or ask the attendant before switching methods.

Do not assume that every payment method listed for ordinary Sam’s Club purchases works at a fuel pump. Sam’s general in-club payment page is not a promise of pump acceptance. Fuel-center signs and the attendant are the appropriate local check.
How to pay with Scan & Go fuel
Scan & Go can be a practical alternative when the physical card is not being read, but it still requires an eligible payment method and a successful authorization. Use the official fuel flow in this order:

- Open the Sam’s Club app and choose the Fuel tile.
- Tap Continue when the fuel flow opens.
- Allow camera access if the app requests it.
- Scan the QR code displayed on the pump screen.
- Select the payment method you want to use.
- Enter the card’s CVV or security code if prompted.
- Verify the billing ZIP code if the app requests it.
- Confirm the transaction. The app should authorize the payment and connect it to the selected pump.
If Scan & Go reports a CVV error, re-enter the security code from the card. For a ZIP-code error, verify the billing ZIP code associated with that card, not necessarily the ZIP code where you are buying fuel. Those corrections address the specific verification errors Sam’s Club describes; they do not guarantee a fix for an unrelated card decline, an unavailable service, or a pump fault.
Membership requirements and exceptions
Sam’s Club says an active membership is generally required to buy fuel. Local law can restrict that limitation, so the rule is not identical in every jurisdiction. If the pump rejects your membership card, ask the Fuel Station Attendant or the Membership Desk to check the membership issue rather than repeatedly inserting the card.
A payment card and a membership card serve different purposes in the transaction. A card that successfully pays for other purchases may still be rejected at a fuel center if that location does not accept the card type, the membership requirement has not been satisfied, or the issuer does not authorize the transaction. The published help pages do not establish which of those possibilities applies to a particular decline.

What a pending fuel charge means
A pump may place a preauthorization before the final fuel amount is known. Sam’s Club describes a hold of $100–$150, varying by state. It says the hold is typically removed and replaced with the actual purchase amount within 24–36 hours. These are Sam’s Club operational figures, not a guarantee of how quickly a particular bank will post the final transaction.

Keep the receipt, or at least note the date, time, pump number, and amount shown, so you can explain the transaction if necessary.
If the preauthorization remains longer than 36 hours, Sam’s Club directs members to contact the financial institution using the telephone number on the payment card. The issuer can see the authorization status and explain when its system will release or replace the hold. Fuel-center staff generally cannot control the issuer’s posting timeline.

When the card issuer is the right next call
Call the number on the back of the card when the same card fails at another pump, when Scan & Go confirms the details but authorization still fails, or when a pending hold lasts beyond the stated period. Have these details ready:
- The card type and the last four digits, rather than the full card number in an unsecured conversation.
- The Sam’s Club location, pump number, date, and approximate time.
- The exact error or decline wording.
- Whether the attempt was made at the pump or through Scan & Go.
- Any pending amount and the amount of fuel actually dispensed, if a sale completed.
The issuer, not Sam’s Club’s public help page, can tell you why its authorization was refused or why a hold has not released. Do not infer a specific cause from the screen alone.
Common situations and the safest response
The membership card fails, but you have not tried another pump
Notify the attendant or Membership Desk first, then follow the staff member’s direction to another dispenser. Ask whether your membership is active and whether local rules affect fuel access. Avoid making repeated attempts at the same reader.

Your credit card fails at two pumps
Use another payment method that the attendant confirms is accepted, or use Scan & Go with a different eligible payment method. Contact the issuing institution about the declined card. Sam’s Club does not publish a universal explanation for an individual issuer decline.
You have a barcode-only gift card
Do not expect the pump to scan it. Sam’s Club’s fuel guidance says the gift card used at the pump needs a magnetic strip. Ask the attendant what other payment method the location accepts.
Scan & Go cannot connect to the pump
Check that you selected the Fuel tile, allowed camera access, scanned the QR code shown on the correct pump, and confirmed the selected payment method. If the app asks for CVV or billing ZIP, correct those fields. If the service or pump remains unavailable, ask the attendant rather than repeatedly submitting the transaction.

Compare the pending amount with Sam’s Club’s stated $100–$150 preauthorization range, which varies by state, and allow the usual 24–36-hour replacement period. Contact the issuer after 36 hours if the hold has not been replaced or released.
What to keep for a dispute or follow-up
Save the final receipt and record the pump number whenever a transaction is interrupted. If no receipt prints, write down the time, location, amount displayed, and whether fuel was dispensed. This documentation is practical rather than a Sam’s Club requirement, but it gives both the attendant and the issuer a precise transaction to investigate.
If fuel was dispensed and the payment later appears duplicated or unresolved, discuss the specific entries with the card issuer and Sam’s Club staff. Describe which entry is pending and which one is final; a pending authorization is not automatically a second completed charge.
