If your traditional IRA-to-Roth IRA conversion was not completed by December 31, you generally cannot assign it to the previous tax year. The IRS normally taxes a conversion in the year the assets actually moved, not the year you requested it. First confirm the custodian’s completion date and transaction description; then report the event under the tax rules and forms for that year. Do not try to undo a post-2017 conversion by recharacterizing it.
Start with the custodian’s actual completion date
A December 31 request is not necessarily a December 31 conversion. The relevant date is when the IRA custodian completed the transfer from the traditional IRA to the Roth IRA. The IRS says taxable amounts are generally included in income for the year of conversion, so an instruction submitted in December but completed in January belongs to the later tax year. See the IRS explanation in Publication 590-A.

Ask for two records
- The date the assets left the traditional IRA and arrived in the Roth IRA, or the date the custodian treated the conversion as complete.
- The exact transaction description, such as Roth conversion, IRA contribution, distribution, or rollover.
Download or save the year-end and January account statements, the conversion confirmation, and any tax forms the custodian issues. A pending instruction, a rejected request, and a completed conversion can have different reporting results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIdentify which transaction actually occurred
People often call several different IRA events a conversion. Classification matters because the correction and reporting rules are different.

| Event | What it means | Deadline question | General reporting focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional-to-Roth conversion | Assets are distributed from a traditional IRA and placed in a Roth IRA. | When did the custodian complete the conversion? | Report in the tax year of completion; taxable and basis portions are determined under that year’s instructions. |
| IRA contribution | New money is contributed to an IRA rather than moved as a conversion. | Which contribution year did you designate, and was it accepted on time? | Contribution rules and any permitted recharacterization rules apply. |
| Distribution followed by rollover | Money leaves an IRA and is later put into another eligible retirement account. | Was the event a rollover rather than a conversion, and when did each step occur? | Rollover and distribution reporting rules apply; do not use conversion instructions automatically. |
If the custodian’s description is unclear, ask for a written explanation before preparing the return. The same dollars can produce very different forms depending on whether the event was a conversion, contribution, or rollover.
What a missed December 31 deadline means for your tax year
Suppose you requested a conversion on December 29, but the custodian completed it on January 2. The conversion is generally a January transaction and is reported for the new tax year. It does not become a prior-year conversion merely because you initiated the request before New Year’s Eve.
The IRS describes traditional-IRA distributions that would otherwise be taxable as remaining includible when converted to a Roth IRA, normally in the year of conversion. Amounts representing your traditional IRA basis are not included in gross income. Your final taxable amount therefore depends both on the completion year and on your basis records.

Do not put a January-completed conversion on the previous year’s return to match your intention. A custodian’s Form 1099-R and Form 5498 reporting may also reflect the year in which it processed the transaction. The IRS provides the applicable reporting instructions for those forms in its Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498.

You generally cannot undo a post-2017 conversion
For a tax year beginning after December 31, 2017, the IRS says a traditional IRA-to-Roth IRA conversion cannot be recharacterized as though it had been made to a traditional IRA. In the IRS’s words, a conversion made in those tax years cannot be recharacterized back to a traditional IRA. This rule is stated in Publication 590-A.
That means a market decline, an unexpectedly high tax bill, or a missed December deadline does not create a general right to reverse the conversion. You can ask the custodian whether a transaction failed or was never completed, but a completed post-2017 conversion is not corrected by labeling it a recharacterized contribution.
Contribution recharacterization is a separate rule
The IRS permits recharacterizing certain IRA contributions by a trustee-to-trustee transfer, subject to timing and reporting requirements. This can apply when an amount was contributed to the wrong type of IRA or when contribution eligibility changes. It does not provide a way to reverse a completed conversion. The distinctions and conditions are described in Publication 590-A.
Step-by-step response after the deadline
- Confirm the processing date. Contact the custodian and request the completion date, settlement or transfer details, and the transaction code or description. Ask whether any part remains pending or was returned.
- Classify the event. Decide whether the record shows a conversion, a contribution, or a distribution followed by a rollover. If the custodian used an unusual label, obtain clarification in writing.
- Assign the correct tax year. Use the year in which the custodian completed the conversion or other event. A December request completed in January is generally a new-year transaction.
- Collect basis information. Gather prior Forms 8606, records of nondeductible traditional IRA contributions, and statements for every traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRA you own. Basis can change how much of a distribution is included in income.
- Follow that year’s form instructions. Use the IRS instructions for the actual transaction year, not an earlier year chosen for convenience. Form 8606 may be required, but the requirement depends on your facts.
- Reconcile custodian forms. When Forms 1099-R or 5498 arrive, compare their year and transaction type with your statements. Do not change the transaction year merely because a form arrived late.
- Correct an already filed return if necessary. If you reported the event in the wrong year or omitted required information, ask a qualified tax professional which amended return or other filing is appropriate for your facts.
How Form 8606 fits into the filing
Form 8606 is used for specified IRA reporting situations, including situations involving nondeductible contributions and taxable portions of IRA distributions or conversions. It is not a universal form for every Roth contribution or every IRA transaction. Read the instructions for the year in which the event occurred.

For example, the IRS says the 2025 Form 8606 is filed with the 2025 Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR by the return’s due date, including extensions. That 2025 instruction is an example for that tax year; do not apply its dates blindly to a conversion completed in another year. The current instructions are at IRS Instructions for Form 8606.
Use the right year’s forms
A conversion completed in 2026 belongs on the 2026 federal return, using the 2026 versions of the applicable forms and instructions when they are issued. A conversion completed in 2025 belongs on the 2025 return. If you are preparing a return before a form is available, ask your preparer how to document the transaction rather than substituting a prior-year form.
Why traditional IRA basis can change the tax
Not every dollar distributed in a conversion is necessarily taxable. The IRS distinguishes your after-tax basis in traditional IRAs from amounts included in gross income. If you made nondeductible contributions, some portion may be a return of basis rather than taxable income.
The calculation can be complicated when you hold more than one traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA or have made several contributions and distributions. Your custodian may not know your complete basis history; it is your responsibility to preserve prior Forms 8606 and contribution records. Do not estimate basis from the balance in the one account that was converted.

Records to assemble
- Every prior Form 8606 that reports nondeductible contributions or IRA basis.
- Year-end balances for all traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs for the relevant year.
- Contribution confirmations and distribution or conversion statements.
- Forms 1099-R and 5498 supplied by custodians.
- Copies of filed federal returns on which IRA transactions were reported.
If records are missing, ask the custodian for historical statements and request professional help before filing. An incorrect basis calculation can make an otherwise accurate conversion report wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Three common situations
You requested the conversion in December and it completed in January
Report the conversion in the January completion year. Keep evidence of both the request and completion dates, but do not use the request date as the tax year. The prior year may still contain a separate contribution or distribution, so review the statements rather than assuming nothing happened.
The custodian says the conversion was rejected or cancelled
Ask whether assets ever left the traditional IRA and whether a distribution was reported. If no conversion occurred, the reporting may differ from what you expected; if a distribution occurred and money was later moved, analyze that sequence as a possible rollover. Obtain the custodian’s written transaction history before deciding which forms apply.

A direct Roth contribution is not a conversion. Eligibility, contribution-year designation, and possible recharacterization are governed by contribution rules. The IRS discusses Roth contribution topics at Topic No. 309. Do not report a contribution as a conversion simply because the money came from a bank account or another IRA transaction was planned.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the request date. Tax reporting generally follows the custodian’s completion date.
- Assuming December 31 is a grace period. A pending instruction is not automatically a completed prior-year conversion.
- Trying to recharacterize a conversion. The post-2017 rule bars treating a completed conversion as a traditional-IRA contribution.
- Confusing a contribution with a conversion. Contribution recharacterization and conversion reversal are different concepts.
- Ignoring basis. Prior nondeductible contributions can affect the taxable portion.
- Applying the wrong year’s Form 8606 instructions. Forms, due dates, and line instructions are year-specific.
- Relying only on a tax form. Compare Forms 1099-R and 5498 with statements and your own transaction records.
When professional help is worth the cost
Consider a qualified tax professional when the transaction was reported in the wrong year, the custodian issued an unexpected form, you have after-tax basis, multiple IRAs, a distribution followed by a rollover, or more than one conversion around year-end. The general IRS instructions do not establish one correction procedure for every combination of dates, accounts, and reporting errors.
Bring the professional your custodian’s written completion date, transaction description, statements, Forms 1099-R and 5498, prior Forms 8606, and filed returns. Ask specifically which tax year applies, whether Form 8606 is required, and whether an amended return or other correction is needed.
Bottom line for a missed December 31 conversion
Verify what the custodian actually completed and when. If the traditional-to-Roth conversion completed after December 31, report it in the later tax year under that year’s IRS instructions. A completed conversion made in a tax year beginning after December 31, 2017, generally cannot be undone through recharacterization. Separate contributions and rollovers require their own analysis, and after-tax basis can change the taxable amount.
