If your payslip shows an EPF deduction but no EPS contribution, do not assume your employer has failed to fund your pension. Your EPF deduction is the employee-side provident-fund share; EPS is normally financed from a portion of the employer’s contribution. First compare the payslip with the EPFO passbook for the same wage month. Then ask payroll to confirm the wage basis, your EPS-membership status, the employer-side split and the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) filing. If the records still do not match, submit an EPFiGMS grievance with the month and supporting documents.
Why an EPF deduction can appear without an EPS deduction
EPF and EPS are related parts of India’s Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions framework, but they are not the same payroll item. The amount deducted from your salary is generally your employee share of EPF. EPS funding is ordinarily created by diverting part of the employer’s provident-fund contribution, so an employee-paid “EPS deduction” need not appear on the payslip.

EPFO’s 2020–21 Annual Report describes the mechanism this way: “The Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995 is funded by diversion of an amount equivalent to 8.33% of the monthly wages from the monthly Employer’s share of Provident Fund contributions AND a contribution of 1.16% of the monthly wages (limited to the ceiling of fifteen thousand rupees only) by the Central Government.” That sentence contains the older ₹15,000 government-contribution ceiling. It explains the funding structure, not the ceiling that applies to every later wage month. Current eligibility and limits must be checked against the applicable rules and records for your month.

Payroll systems also differ in presentation. Some payslips show only the employee EPF deduction and a combined employer contribution; others show employer EPF and pension allocations as separate rows. A missing row is therefore a prompt to verify the account, not proof that pension service was lost.

Check the EPFO passbook before treating it as an error
The passbook is the member-account record to compare with the payslip. Use the wage month shown on the payslip, not merely the month in which salary was credited.
- Open the official EPFO Member Passbook and sign in through the normal member process.
- Select the member account and locate the entry for the exact wage month in question.
- Compare the employee EPF amount, the employer contribution and any pension/EPS allocation displayed for that month.
- Check whether later months were posted while the disputed month is still absent. Posting delays can make a current payslip and an older passbook entry look inconsistent.
- Save or print the relevant passbook page and keep the payslip showing the deduction.
Do not compare a payslip from one establishment or wage month with a passbook entry from another. If you changed jobs, verify the member account, joining date and service history associated with the Universal Account Number (UAN).

- What monthly wages were used for EPF and for EPS for the disputed wage month?
- Is my UAN and employment record marked as an EPS member, and what membership or joining history was used?
- How much of the employer’s contribution was allocated to EPS and how much to EPF?
- Was the month included in the ECR, and was any correction, revised filing or adjustment submitted?
- Is the payslip format omitting an employer-side EPS line even though the allocation was filed?
- If no EPS allocation was made, which rule or membership fact was applied and where is that reflected in the payroll record?
Request the reply for the specific month rather than a general statement that “PF is deposited.” Keep the email, ticket number or letter, because it shows what the employer reviewed if you later escalate.
Common explanations for a missing EPS entry
The payslip shows only employee deductions
An employee EPF deduction is not an EPS deduction. If the employer-side allocation appears in the passbook, the payslip may simply be designed not to display EPS separately. This is a presentation issue, not necessarily a contribution failure.
Your membership history affects EPS treatment
EPS treatment depends on when you first became a member and on prior EPFO service. The joining date with the current employer is not always the same as the date of first EPF/EPS membership. Provide payroll with previous service details and any transfer history rather than relying only on the current appointment letter.

The wage ceiling for that month matters
Eligibility and the amount subject to pension contribution depend on the wage ceiling and the rules in force for the relevant period. A high salary by itself does not answer the question; the applicable wage basis, membership history and date must be considered together.
The employer filing or passbook posting is incomplete
An employer can deduct EPF from salary while an ECR or correction is delayed, rejected or posted with an incorrect split. That is why the payroll explanation and the passbook entry must be checked together. Ask whether a corrected ECR was filed and request the correction reference if one exists.
The record is genuinely inconsistent
If payroll confirms that an EPS allocation should have been made but the passbook does not show it, or if payroll cannot explain the difference, treat it as a record-resolution issue. Gather the documents and use EPFiGMS rather than guessing from the payslip layout.

Current and historical rule context
The figures below have different dates and purposes. Do not apply the historic manual wording to a post-change month without checking current instructions.
| Context | Figure or rule | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Government announcement effective 17 September 2026 | ₹25,000 monthly ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage | For wage months around or after this date, confirm implementation using current EPFO instructions and the employer’s actual ECR and passbook record. See the 16 September 2026 Press Information Bureau announcement. |
| Government explanation of the revised ceiling | EPS contribution described as 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000, with a maximum of ₹2,083 per month | This is the contribution rate and cap stated in the September 2026 government release; it is not an instruction to deduct ₹2,083 from the employee’s salary. See the September 2026 Press Information Bureau explanation. |
| EPFO Pension Manual (2024) | For a first-time entrant joining an establishment covered under the Act on or after 1 September 2014, the manual says EPS membership and contribution are initiated only when wages are up to ₹15,000 | This is a historic-rule statement in the 2024 manual. It should not be presented as the universal ceiling for later periods or as a final decision on an individual case. Read the EPFO Pension Manual with the current ceiling announcement and month-specific records. |
The dates matter. A person first covered under the older rule may have a different treatment from a person whose coverage is assessed after the September 2026 change. Payroll should identify which rule and membership status it applied to your wage month.

- A payslip can show an employee EPF deduction without a separate employee EPS deduction.
- The employer’s total statutory contribution may be divided between EPF and EPS rather than paid entirely to EPF.
- The amount shown in the passbook, not the presence of a payslip label alone, indicates how the member account was posted.
- The rate or maximum amount cannot be applied without the wage ceiling, membership date and rule applicable to that month.
For a practical review, make a three-column note for the disputed month: employee EPF deduction on the payslip; employer contribution and split stated by payroll; and the corresponding passbook entries. Any unexplained difference becomes a specific question for payroll or EPFO.
Escalate through EPFiGMS when payroll does not resolve it
EPFO lists EPFiGMS as its grievance channel on its For Employees page. Use it after giving payroll a reasonable opportunity to correct or explain the record, or sooner if the employer does not respond.
- Collect the payslip for the disputed wage month, the matching passbook entry, your joining date, relevant previous EPFO service details and the written payroll response.
- Open the EPFO For Employees page and follow the EPFiGMS grievance link.
- Describe the issue precisely: state the establishment, wage month, EPF amount deducted, what the passbook shows or omits, and the answer received from payroll.
- Attach legible supporting records and retain the grievance registration number and all correspondence.
- Respond to any request for clarification with the same month-specific documents; do not replace the original issue with a general complaint about pension eligibility.
EPFO’s Pension Payment Enquiry page is an information service for pension-payment enquiries. A missing contribution in an active member account should still be described through the appropriate grievance route rather than assumed to be a pension-payment matter.
Documents and details to prepare
- Payslip showing the EPF deduction and the wage month.
- EPFO passbook page for that same month.
- Joining date with the current employer and, where relevant, first EPF/EPS membership date.
- Previous UAN service or transfer records that may affect membership status.
- Payroll’s written explanation, ECR or correction reference, if supplied.
- A short calculation showing the employee deduction, employer contribution and any amount identified as EPS.
Redact information that is not needed for the complaint, while leaving the UAN, wage month and contribution figures readable when the official channel requires them.
Protect yourself from contribution scams
Use only official EPFO pages for passbook access and grievances. Do not give a caller or unofficial agent your UAN password, one-time password, bank details or other authentication information. Do not send money to “activate” an EPS contribution or to obtain a correction. If someone claims a payment is required, end the call and verify the issue through your employer and EPFO’s published channels.
How to interpret the result
| What you find | Likely next action |
|---|---|
| Payslip has no EPS row, but the passbook shows an employer-side pension allocation for the month | Ask payroll to confirm its payslip format and retain the passbook as evidence of the posting. |
| Payslip and passbook both show EPF, but neither shows an EPS allocation | Ask payroll to state your EPS membership status, wage basis and the rule applied to that month. |
| Payroll says EPS was filed, but the passbook omits it | Request the ECR or correction details; if unresolved, submit an EPFiGMS grievance with both records. |
| The issue concerns a month near 17 September 2026 or a change in employment | Have payroll and EPFO assess the month under the applicable ceiling and your complete membership history rather than using a generic ₹15,000 or ₹25,000 assumption. |
A missing EPS line by itself does not establish an error, and an EPF deduction by itself does not establish that every employee qualifies for an EPS allocation. The decisive evidence is the month-specific passbook, employer filing and membership and wage rules that apply to your record.
