What to Do if Your Paycheck Shows Too Much Social Security Tax

First identify whether the apparent overage is Social Security tax (often labeled Social Security or OASDI), not Medicare or federal income tax, and determine whether one employer made an error or several employers collectively exceeded the annual limit. For 2026, the employee Social Security rate is 6.2% on wages up to a $184,500 wage base. If one employer withheld too much, ask that employer to correct it; if the employer will not, the IRS identifies Form 843 as the refund route. If multiple employers caused the total to exceed the yearly maximum, claim the eligible excess as a credit on your federal income-tax return instead.

The dollar limits are specific to the calendar tax year. Use the IRS rate, wage-base and return instructions for the year shown on your W-2 rather than carrying 2026 figures into another year.

Confirm which payroll tax is too high

Look at the exact line on your pay stub and later on your Form W-2. Social Security withholding may be called Social Security, OASDI or a similar label. It is a separate payroll tax from Medicare and from federal income-tax withholding.

For 2026, the employee Social Security rate is 6.2% and applies only until that employee’s wages reach the $184,500 Social Security wage base. The IRS lists those figures in Topic no. 751, Social Security and Medicare withholding rates. The maximum employee Social Security withholding implied by those 2026 figures is $11,439.

Medicare tax has no wage-base limit. An amount that continues to be withheld after your wages pass $184,500 can therefore be Medicare rather than an error. Additional Medicare Tax is another separate charge: an employer generally starts withholding it when wages paid by that employer exceed $200,000, regardless of your filing status. Do not use the Social Security correction procedures for a Medicare or Additional Medicare Tax question.

The two main reasons the total looks excessive

What happened Typical clue Who normally acts Possible federal remedy
One employer over-withheld The Social Security line from a single employer exceeds what that employer should have withheld for your wages. That employer’s payroll department should review and adjust the excess. If the employer does not make the adjustment, IRS guidance points to Form 843 for an employee refund claim.
Several employers withheld normally You changed jobs, held concurrent jobs or had other employers, and the combined Social Security withholding exceeds the year’s individual maximum. You total the Forms W-2 and claim the eligible excess on your federal return. Follow that tax year’s Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR instructions to claim the credit.

Each regular employer generally calculates withholding using the wages it paid, not the wages paid by your other employers. Consequently, no individual payroll system may show an error even though your combined annual withholding is too high for one person.

A step-by-step check before requesting money back

  1. Identify the calendar tax year. Use the year in which the wages were paid, shown on the W-2, and obtain that year’s IRS wage base and instructions. A 2026 number cannot be substituted for a 2025 or later figure.
  2. Mark the exact tax line. Separate Social Security/OASDI from Medicare, Additional Medicare Tax and federal income tax. Compare the year-to-date amount on your final pay stub with the Social Security amount in Box 4 of each W-2.
  3. Collect every employer’s records. Gather all W-2s for the year, final pay stubs, and emails or letters exchanged with payroll. Include an employer that paid you for only part of the year.
  4. Add withholding by employer and in total. The by-employer totals help reveal a payroll error; the grand total shows whether multiple employers pushed you over that year’s individual limit.
  5. Choose the correction path. Start with payroll when one employer’s records indicate an overcollection. Use the individual-return credit when separate employers caused the combined excess. Reserve Form 843 for claim types supported by the applicable IRS instructions.

If one employer withheld too much

Ask payroll for a specific review

Contact the employer’s payroll or human-resources department promptly. State the pay periods involved, the Social Security amounts shown on those pay stubs, your year-to-date wages and withholding, and why the figures appear excessive. Attach copies rather than sending your only originals, and keep a dated record of your request and the response.

IRS Topic no. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA tax withheld, says, “Your employer should adjust the excess for you.” An adjustment is the normal first remedy for an error by one employer. Ask payroll how the correction will appear in the employer’s records and on the wage statement you receive for that year.

If the employer will not adjust it

If the employer refuses, does not respond or cannot correct the overcollection, the same IRS topic identifies Form 843 as the employee’s refund-claim route for the described situation. Read the current Instructions for Form 843 before filing. The instructions call for copies of the relevant year’s W-2 forms for the claim types covered there, so include the required copies and a clear explanation of the employer, pay periods and amount at issue.

Form 843 is not a general substitute for the multiple-employer credit on your income-tax return. Use it only when the current IRS instructions support your particular claim. The IRS About Form 843 page provides the current form and related filing information.

If multiple employers caused the excess

Why this happens

Suppose you leave one job and start another during the same calendar year, or work two jobs at once. Each employer normally withholds Social Security tax on the wages it pays. Neither employer necessarily knows how much Social Security tax another employer has already withheld, so the combined amount can exceed the maximum for one individual.

The 2026 calculation

The 2026 IRS General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 identify $11,439 as the relevant combined Social Security/Tier 1 Railroad Retirement Tax Act (RRTA) withholding amount. That figure is tied to 2026 and should not be used for another year. The instructions are at General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026).

For an illustration using only 2026 figures, assume Employer A paid $120,000 and withheld 6.2%, or $7,440, and Employer B paid $100,000 and withheld 6.2%, or $6,200. The combined withholding is $13,640. Subtracting the 2026 maximum of $11,439 leaves $2,201 of potential excess. The example assumes ordinary Social Security wages and no special RRTA rules; your actual return must use the figures and instructions for your tax year.

Claim the credit on your federal return

When the excess resulted from two or more employers, follow that year’s Form 1040, Form 1040-SR or Form 1040-NR instructions for claiming excess Social Security withholding as a credit. Enter the amounts from all Forms W-2 exactly, calculate the eligible excess under the return instructions, and retain the worksheets and W-2 copies supporting the calculation. Do not ask one employer to refund an amount that arose only because another employer also withheld tax.

Joint returns, railroad wages and other exceptions

Spouses calculate separately

A joint federal return does not merge spouses’ Social Security wages or withholding for this purpose. Each spouse must total their own Social Security withholding and compare it with the applicable individual annual limit. One spouse’s unused wage-base room cannot absorb the other spouse’s excess.

Railroad Retirement Tax Act wages

Railroad employees may have Tier 1 and Tier 2 RRTA withholding rather than ordinary Social Security withholding. RRTA has its own limits and procedures. Topic no. 608 identifies Form 843 for certain excess Tier 2 claims involving multiple railroad employers, while the W-2/W-3 instructions include a combined Social Security/Tier 1 RRTA amount. Use the railroad-specific instructions for the tax year and do not apply the ordinary Social Security calculation blindly.

Do not mix tax types

An apparent excess in Medicare, Additional Medicare Tax or federal income tax follows different rules. Medicare has no wage-base cap, and Additional Medicare Tax is triggered by the employer’s wage payments once they exceed $200,000. Verify the label before contacting payroll or preparing a refund claim.

Documents to keep and questions to answer

Keep a complete file for each calendar year:

  • Every Form W-2, including one from a short-term or concurrent employer.
  • Final and, when useful, interim pay stubs showing year-to-date wages and each payroll-tax line.
  • Payroll emails, letters, case numbers and the date of any requested adjustment.
  • Your calculation showing the by-employer totals and the annual limit used.
  • A copy of any Form 843, attachments and tax return worksheet submitted.

Before filing, you should be able to answer four questions: Which tax year is involved? Which exact line is Social Security tax? Did one employer over-collect, or did several employers together exceed the limit? Which IRS form or return instructions apply to that cause?

A compact decision checklist

  • Read the pay-stub and W-2 labels; do not treat Medicare as Social Security.
  • Use the wage base and withholding maximum published for the same tax year as the wages.
  • List every employer and total Social Security withholding separately and together.
  • Send a documented correction request to payroll when one employer is responsible.
  • Use the federal-return credit procedure when multiple employers created the combined excess.
  • File Form 843 only for a claim type supported by its current instructions, with the required W-2 copies.
  • Calculate each spouse separately on a joint return and switch to RRTA guidance for railroad wages.
