First confirm whether the displayed change includes distributions and reinvestments, then check what the fund owns, why it owns it, how it compares with an appropriate benchmark, and whether it still fits your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs and tolerance for loss. Only after that review should you choose among holding, rebalancing, redirecting contributions or redeeming.
A mutual fund can lose some or all of its value because its underlying investments can decline. Fund shares are not government-insured, and a short-term drop alone does not prove that the fund is defective or that selling is the right response.

Why a mutual fund can lose value
A mutual fund share represents an ownership interest in a portfolio of securities. The fund calculates a net asset value (NAV) from the value of those holdings, minus liabilities. When stocks, bonds or other assets in the portfolio fall, the NAV generally falls as well. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) puts the risk plainly: “You may lose some or all of the money you invest because the investments held by a fund can go down in value.” Mutual funds are not government-insured. See the SEC’s mutual-fund overview.

The cause may be broad market conditions, interest-rate changes, credit problems, currency movements, a weak sector or company, or a strategy that takes more risk than you realized. A bond fund, for example, can decline when market interest rates rise; a sector fund can fall sharply when that industry is out of favor. The right response depends on the fund’s stated role and your circumstances, not on the size of one red number.

Confirm what the reported loss actually measures
Check the dates and share class
Write down the beginning and ending dates used by your account statement or app. A one-day change, a year-to-date figure and the result since purchase answer different questions. Confirm that you are looking at the same share class and account, because share classes can have different expenses and sales charges. If you bought shares at different times, the account’s aggregate gain or loss may conceal the results of individual purchases.
Account for distributions and reinvestment
Funds may distribute dividends or capital gains. On an ex-distribution date, the NAV can drop by roughly the amount distributed even though you received cash or additional shares. A balance display that ignores reinvested distributions can make performance look worse; a distribution amount by itself can also make a weak investment look successful. The SEC’s August 19, 2026 Fund Distributions bulletin explains why distributions are not the same as investment performance.
Use total return, not the distribution headline
For a meaningful result, include changes in NAV plus distributions, assuming distributions are reinvested when that matches your account. Compare the same total-return period for the fund and its benchmark. If your provider cannot explain how its performance number is calculated, ask whether it includes reinvestments, fees and all purchases.

A prospectus describes what the fund is designed to do; it does not promise a positive return. Pair it with the latest shareholder report to see whether actual holdings and exposures still resemble the strategy.
Examine holdings and concentration
Do not infer diversification from a broad-sounding name. A sector-focused fund can be concentrated in a small group of companies or industries. Several funds can also own many of the same securities, leaving your overall portfolio less diversified than the fund list suggests. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance recommends looking across the entire portfolio, not at each fund in isolation.
Compare with an appropriate benchmark
Use a benchmark that matches the fund’s objective, geography, asset class and risk—not simply the best-known market index. Compare over a period long enough for the strategy to operate, while recognizing that no historical period predicts future returns. For an index fund, a modest shortfall relative to its index may reflect expenses, trading costs and tracking error; the SEC discusses these issues in its index-fund guidance. An actively managed fund should be assessed against the benchmark named in its documents and against the role it is meant to play.
Look for a changed thesis
Ask whether anything material changed: a new manager, a revised mandate, a different level of leverage, a merger, or a portfolio that no longer matches the stated objective. A decline caused by a temporary market event may be consistent with the plan. A persistent mismatch between the fund’s behavior and its promised role is a reason to reassess it.

Decide whether the fund still fits your plan
Investment performance is only one part of suitability. Revisit these questions before placing an order:
- Goal and time horizon: Is the money for a near-term obligation, retirement decades away, or something in between? A short horizon leaves less time to recover from a decline.
- Liquidity: Will you need the money soon, and would selling during a downturn impair your ability to pay planned expenses?
- Risk tolerance: Could you stay invested through another decline of similar or greater size without abandoning your plan?
- Asset allocation: Does this fund give your portfolio the intended mix of stocks, bonds and other assets, or has market movement pushed the allocation away from its target?
- Overlap: Do other accounts already give you large exposure to the same companies, sector or country?
The SEC explains asset allocation and diversification in its investor guidance. A fund can be down and still be performing its intended job; alternatively, a loss can reveal that its concentration or volatility is no longer acceptable for you.
Know the cost and mechanics of selling
Review every charge first
Check the prospectus fee table and your account agreement for a redemption fee, contingent deferred sales charge, front-end or back-end sales load, exchange fee, short-term trading fee or account-level charge. Fund expenses are deducted from assets and reduce returns over time. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 Mutual Fund and ETF Fees and Expenses bulletin explains how operating expenses and shareholder fees affect what you receive.

Unlike a stock order that can execute at a visible intraday price, a mutual-fund purchase or redemption generally executes at the next calculated NAV after the order is accepted. The exact cutoff time is set by the fund and intermediary. You will not know the final NAV when you submit an ordinary redemption order.

Plan for settlement and taxes
Investor.gov states that a fund company generally must pay redemption proceeds within seven days, subject to exceptions. Read the fund’s prospectus and your provider’s instructions for the applicable timing. Selling may create a taxable capital gain or loss in a taxable account; the result depends on your cost basis, holding period, account type and jurisdiction. Neither the fund’s decline nor a distribution by itself determines your tax outcome. Ask a qualified tax professional when the tax consequences affect the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an action deliberately
| Action | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Continue holding | The fund still matches its objective, risk level and role, and your horizon allows time for volatility. | Current holdings, benchmark-relative results, fees and your ability to tolerate further losses. |
| Rebalance | Market movement has pushed your portfolio away from its target allocation. | Target percentages, transaction charges, tax effects and whether the trade restores—not replaces—your plan. |
| Change future contributions | You want to reduce an overweight position without immediately selling existing shares. | How payroll or automatic-investment instructions work and whether the resulting portfolio remains diversified. |
| Redeem or switch | The fund no longer serves your objective, has risks you cannot accept, or is unsuitable for your time horizon or liquidity needs. | Redemption price mechanics, all charges, taxes, replacement-fund differences and settlement timing. |
These are planning choices, not universal prescriptions. A lower-fee or index-labeled fund is not automatically suitable, and replacing one fund with another can create new concentration or risk.
A step-by-step review you can complete
- Capture the facts. Record the fund name, ticker, share class, number of shares, current NAV, purchase dates, cost basis, displayed return period and any distributions.
- Open the documents. Download the current prospectus and shareholder report. Mark the objective, permitted investments, principal risks, expense ratio, manager information and transaction terms.
- Map the exposure. List the largest holdings, sectors, countries, duration or credit quality for a bond fund, and compare them with your other accounts.
- Run a like-for-like comparison. Select the benchmark identified for the strategy. Compare total returns over relevant periods and note volatility, fees and tracking differences rather than relying on a single month.
- Recheck your plan. Write down the goal, date you expect to need the money, acceptable loss range, liquidity reserve and target asset allocation.
- Price the transaction. Ask the intermediary for the exact redemption or exchange charges, tax-lot choices, order cutoff and expected payment date.
- Document the decision. State why you are holding, rebalancing, redirecting contributions or selling, and what evidence would cause you to review the choice again. Automate a periodic review instead of reacting to every daily move.
Common mistakes to avoid
Selling solely because the balance is red
A loss is backward-looking information. Selling converts an unrealized decline into a realized result and may remove the exposure your plan requires. Decide based on a changed objective, unsuitable risk or portfolio need—not color on a screen.

Treating distributions as proof of success
A fund can pay distributions while its NAV and total return lag its benchmark. Evaluate the complete return after expenses and account for whether the distribution was reinvested.
Assuming several funds guarantee diversification
Check the actual holdings and overlap. Five funds that own the same large companies may behave much like one concentrated position.
Ignoring costs and taxes
Fees, loads, redemption charges and taxable sales can materially change the proceeds. Obtain the figures before submitting an order, not after it executes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen personalized advice is worthwhile
Consider an appropriately qualified financial professional when the decision involves a large share of your assets, a near-term cash need, complex tax lots, retirement distributions, an employer plan with limited options, or uncertainty about your risk capacity. Bring the prospectus, shareholder report, account statements, cost basis and your written goal. A professional should explain assumptions, conflicts, fees and alternatives rather than promise that any fund will recover.
Bottom line
If your mutual fund loses value, pause and diagnose: verify the performance measurement, read the current documents, inspect concentration and overlap, compare total return with a suitable benchmark, and reassess the fund against your goals and risk capacity. Then account for charges, order mechanics, settlement and possible taxes before choosing to hold, rebalance, redirect contributions or redeem. There is no reliable sell-on-a-drop rule; the sound decision is the one that restores a suitable, understood plan.
