If your brokerage supports dollar-based fractional investing, you may be able to buy part of an eligible stock or exchange-traded fund (ETF). If you want broader diversification, an automatic mutual-fund investment program may accept a small recurring amount. A direct stock plan or dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) is another possibility.
The best route depends on what you want to own, the account and security eligibility, minimums, fees, order handling, diversification needs, and whether you may need to move the account later. The choices below are educational information for U.S. investors, not individualized investment advice.

First, identify what you are trying to buy
A low monthly amount is a cash-flow constraint, not by itself a reason to choose a particular investment. Start with the investment objective:
- A particular company’s stock or an ETF: investigate fractional-share purchases through a brokerage.
- Diversified exposure: investigate a mutual fund whose automatic investment feature accepts your amount.
- A company’s stock purchased directly: investigate a direct stock plan or DRIP.
- Simply building a regular habit: compare the total costs and administrative rules of each route before setting up an automatic transfer.
A high share price does not establish that a security is suitable, and a low share price does not make it suitable. Consider the investment’s risk, diversification, expenses, and role in your overall plan separately from the number printed beside one share.

Your main ways to invest less than one share
| Route | What it may solve | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Brokerage fractional shares | Lets a dollar amount buy less than one whole share of an eligible stock or ETF. | Security eligibility, account eligibility, minimum order, permitted order types, trading-hour and execution rules, fees, dividends, voting treatment, liquidity, and transferability. |
| Automatic mutual-fund investing | Allows recurring purchases of a mutual fund; some programs can reduce or avoid a fund’s usual minimum investment. | Fund minimum, ongoing expenses, purchase terms, and whether the arrangement is an ordinary automatic investment program rather than a higher-cost periodic payment plan. |
| Direct stock plan or DRIP | May allow direct purchases of a company’s shares or reinvestment of dividends. | Plan availability, purchase minimums, fees, schedule, pricing formula, sale rules, and transfer charges. |
How fractional-share investing works
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy defines a fractional share as “when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security.” Its November 9, 2020 investor bulletin also describes fractional shares as a way to invest when you do not have enough money to purchase a full share.
Instead of entering an order for a number of shares, an eligible brokerage may let you enter a dollar amount. For example, the SEC bulletin uses a hypothetical case in which XYZ trades at $1,000 and an investor has $100. If the brokerage supports the security and order, $100 could represent 0.1 share before any applicable costs. This is an illustration, not a market statistic or a promise that every brokerage will fill the order that way.
Fractional ownership is created and administered under the brokerage’s rules. Not every stock, ETF, account type, or order type is eligible. A firm may accept fractional orders only during certain trading hours, process them on a schedule instead of immediately, or restrict them to market orders or recurring purchases. Ask for the current account agreement and fractional-share disclosure rather than relying on a general feature description.

Step-by-step: checking whether a brokerage can handle your amount
- Name the exact security. Record the ticker and whether it is a stock or ETF. Eligibility can differ even among securities listed on the same exchange.
- Confirm account eligibility. Check whether fractional purchases are available in your account type and whether any registration, residency, or other account condition applies.
- Find the minimum. Look for a minimum dollar order, minimum recurring contribution, or minimum whole-share balance. A small monthly transfer may still be below the firm’s threshold.
- Check order controls. Determine whether the firm accepts dollar-based orders, which order types are allowed, and whether orders can be placed outside regular trading hours.
- Understand execution. Ask when the order is actually sent to the market, how the price is determined, how partial fills are handled, and whether the firm combines recurring orders for execution.
- List every cost. Review transaction charges, account fees, recurring-investment fees, foreign-exchange or other applicable charges, and any spread or price adjustment described in the agreement.
- Read dividend and corporate-action rules. Find out whether cash dividends are paid proportionally, automatically reinvested, or subject to a minimum; also check how stock splits, mergers, and similar events are handled.
- Ask about voting. Fractional positions may not carry the same voting process as whole shares, and treatment varies by firm.
- Ask about selling and transferring. A fractional position may be harder to sell in some circumstances, and fractional shares generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage. Find out whether the firm sells the fraction for cash when you transfer whole shares and what fees apply.
- Place a small test only if appropriate. If the terms fit your plan, verify the confirmation, resulting fraction, price, fees, and dividend treatment before establishing a recurring schedule.
When an automatic mutual-fund purchase may fit better
A mutual fund can provide diversification in one purchase, and an automatic investment program may permit regular contributions that are below the fund’s standard initial minimum. The key question is whether the program is a normal automatic purchase feature attached to the fund or account.
Check the fund’s actual minimum and expenses
Read the current prospectus and account terms for the minimum initial investment, minimum subsequent investment, purchase frequency, and any balance requirement. Compare the fund’s ongoing expenses because a recurring contribution does not make a high-cost fund inexpensive. Also check whether purchases are made at the fund’s next calculated net asset value rather than at an intraday quote; mutual funds generally use their stated pricing process.
Do not confuse automatic investing with a periodic payment plan
The SEC’s July 31, 2007 publication on periodic payment plans discusses a specific plan category with a statutory maximum sales charge of up to 50% of the first twelve monthly payments and illustrates a typical $50-per-month arrangement. Those dated, category-specific figures are not general charges for ordinary automatic mutual-fund investing. Before enrolling, identify the product category and read current fee documents. A plan with substantial sales charges can consume small contributions before they are invested.

Confirm what happens when a payment fails
Ask whether the program skips a contribution, charges a returned-payment fee, or requires a new authorization. Make sure the scheduled amount is sustainable after ordinary bills and emergency savings; an investment schedule that repeatedly overdrafts a bank account is not a useful automation.
When a direct stock plan or DRIP may fit
Investor.gov’s “Direct Investing” materials describe direct stock plans and DRIPs that can permit purchases from the company or reinvestment of dividends. Plans differ materially, so the company name alone tells you very little about the economics.
Review the purchase mechanics
Check the minimum initial and subsequent purchase, whether investments are automatic, the purchase dates, and how the plan calculates the price. Some plans buy on a scheduled date or after pooling participant orders rather than at the moment you submit money. Find out whether the plan buys whole shares, fractional shares, or both.

Review fees and exit rules
Look for enrollment, recurring-purchase, dividend-reinvestment, sale, certificate, account-maintenance, and transfer fees. Determine how to stop automatic purchases, how quickly a sale is processed, and whether a transfer to a brokerage requires selling the fractional portion first. A plan that accepts a small amount but charges a fixed fee on every purchase can be expensive relative to the contribution.
Costs and control points to compare
| Question | Why it matters for a small contribution |
|---|---|
| Is there a fixed fee? | A fee of a few dollars consumes a larger percentage of a $25 or $50 contribution than of a large order. |
| Is the amount invested immediately? | Scheduled or pooled execution can leave cash waiting and may produce a different price from the one visible when you submit the instruction. |
| Can you choose the order type? | Restrictions may limit your control over price and timing. |
| What happens to dividends? | Cash payments, automatic reinvestment, and minimum-balance rules affect how the position grows and how much cash you receive. |
| Can you move the position? | Fractional shares generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage; the firm may liquidate the fraction and send cash. |
| Can you sell easily? | Some fractional positions have limited sale windows or other liquidity restrictions. |
Rights and limitations of owning a fraction
Liquidity
Liquidity is not guaranteed merely because the underlying stock trades frequently. The brokerage may use its own process for fractional orders, and the fraction may be difficult to sell in certain circumstances. Ask whether sales are available during market hours, only through recurring or market orders, or only after the firm aggregates orders.

Voting
Voting treatment varies. The brokerage may pass through voting rights, aggregate votes, or provide no vote for a fractional position. Read the firm’s explanation before assuming that owning 0.2 share gives you the same voting process as owning one whole share.

Dividends and corporate actions
Dividends may be credited proportionally, paid in cash, or reinvested under the firm’s rules. Splits, mergers, spin-offs, and other corporate actions can have special procedures. Confirm how a fraction is calculated and whether cash-in-lieu is used.
Transfers
Fractional shares generally cannot be moved in kind to another brokerage. If you later transfer an account, the firm may sell the fractional remainder and send cash while transferring eligible whole shares. That can create an unwanted sale, timing difference, or tax-reporting event, so ask before opening an account if portability matters.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing solely by share price: compare the investment’s diversification, risk, and costs instead of assuming a cheaper-looking share is better.
- Assuming every security is eligible: verify the exact ticker and account type.
- Ignoring execution timing: read when recurring orders are submitted and priced.
- Missing fixed fees: calculate the fee as a percentage of your monthly amount.
- Confusing a fund program with a periodic payment plan: identify the product category and inspect current sales-charge disclosures.
- Overlooking transfer restrictions: decide whether you may change brokerages before committing to a provider or plan.
- Automating an unaffordable amount: choose a contribution that remains available after essential expenses and cash reserves.
- Expecting regular deposits to remove risk: recurring investing does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Practical examples
You want one expensive stock
Suppose a stock trades at $1,000 and you can invest $100 per month. A brokerage that accepts dollar-based fractional orders might record approximately 0.1 share before costs, but you must confirm eligibility, execution, dividends, voting, fees, and sale rules. If the brokerage does not support that security, waiting for a whole share is not the only alternative: you could examine a diversified fund or a direct plan if either matches your objective and terms.

If your goal is broad exposure rather than ownership of one company, compare mutual funds whose automatic-investment minimum is within your budget. Focus on the fund’s expenses and purchase terms, and reject a high-cost periodic payment arrangement merely because its monthly minimum is low.
You want to reinvest dividends from one company
A DRIP may reinvest dividends into whole or fractional shares, but the plan may charge purchase or sale fees and use scheduled pricing. Read the plan document before assuming reinvestment is free or instantly executed.
A pre-enrollment checklist
- Write down the security or fund and your purpose for owning it.
- Confirm that your account and exact security are eligible.
- Record the minimum contribution and minimum balance.
- Document order type, trading-hour, execution, and pricing rules.
- Calculate all recurring, transaction, fund, sale, and transfer costs.
- Check dividend, voting, corporate-action, liquidity, and transfer treatment.
- Compare diversification and ongoing expenses if a mutual fund is an option.
- Read the current account agreement, prospectus, or plan document.
- Set an amount that will not interfere with essential spending or emergency reserves.
- Review confirmations after the first purchase and adjust only after you understand the result.
What to do next
If your amount is too small for one whole share, first test whether a reputable brokerage can buy a dollar amount of the exact eligible security under terms you understand. If your objective is diversification, compare an automatic mutual-fund program and its ongoing expenses. If you are considering buying directly from a company, read the direct-plan or DRIP fee and pricing schedule. None of these methods removes investment risk; they simply change how a small contribution can be invested.
