Then review the plan’s Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage and compare the plan’s total yearly cost and coverage with alternatives available in your ZIP code for the relevant coverage year. A smaller giveback does not automatically make the plan a bad choice, and the giveback alone should not determine whether you switch.
Medicare calls this benefit a “Medicare Part B premium reduction.” Medicare explains that “some plans will help pay all or part of your Part B premium, but this isn’t available in all areas.” You must still be enrolled in Part B and continue paying the Part B premium to remain in Medicare Advantage.

1. Confirm exactly what is changing
Do not rely on a sales call, summary notice, or a figure shown in an online account until you have verified the formal terms. Ask your plan to provide the old and new giveback amounts, the effective date, and the way the reduction will be applied to your Part B billing. Medicare’s health-plan cost guidance directs members to contact the plan for details because the benefit is plan-specific and not offered everywhere.
Questions to ask the plan
- What was my giveback amount for the current year, and what will it be for the new year?
- Does the reduction begin January 1, or on another date?
- Will the amount be reflected through my Social Security benefit, billed directly, or handled another way?
- Where is the new amount shown in my Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage?
- Are any other premiums, copayments, deductibles, drug benefits, networks, or service-area rules changing at the same time?
Write down the representative’s name, the date, and the exact answer. Keep the letter or secure-message response with your plan documents. A dated record makes it easier to resolve a discrepancy between a notice, a bill, and what the plan representative told you.

2. Read the two documents that control next year’s coverage
Annual Notice of Change
Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) describes changes that take effect in the coming plan year. Medicare says it identifies changes to costs, coverage, provider networks, and service areas. Read every section that applies to you, not just the page mentioning the giveback. Plan premiums, deductibles, and service costs can change annually, with plan cost changes generally effective January 1.
Evidence of Coverage
The Evidence of Coverage (EOC) is the detailed contract for the new year. Use it to verify the cost-sharing rules behind the headline benefits: specialist and primary-care copayments, hospital and emergency services, outpatient therapy, durable medical equipment, prior authorization, referral requirements, and the plan’s annual maximum out-of-pocket limit. If the ANOC and EOC appear inconsistent, ask the plan which provision controls and request the answer in writing.
Keep the ANOC and EOC for the coverage year in which you are making your decision. Older documents describe older benefits and cannot reliably predict what you will pay next year.

The giveback is only one line in your budget. Medicare lists the 2026 standard Part B premium as $202.90 per month, while noting that some people pay more because of income. That is a national benchmark, not a calculation of your premium or the value of your plan’s giveback. You must continue Part B enrollment and payment even when a Medicare Advantage plan helps with some of the premium.

To estimate the change, multiply the monthly reduction in the giveback by the number of months it applies. Then compare that lost amount with every other change in your expected annual spending. A plan that gives back less could still cost less overall if it has a lower premium, lower medical cost sharing, better drug coverage, or a network that avoids expensive out-of-network care.
Build a side-by-side cost worksheet
| Item | Current plan | New version of current plan | Alternative plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part B giveback | Enter the documented monthly amount | Enter the documented monthly amount and effective date | Enter the amount shown in the plan’s official materials |
| Plan premium | Monthly and annual total | Monthly and annual total | Monthly and annual total |

| Prescription cost | Use your drugs, quantities, tiers, and pharmacies | Check formulary and pharmacy changes | Check formulary, tiers, and pharmacy rules |
| Other recurring benefits | Record only benefits you would use | Note additions or reductions | Record the alternative’s relevant benefits |
Estimate an annual total for a low-use year and a likely-use year. Include premiums, predictable visits, prescriptions, and services you know you need. Also test a high-use scenario up to the plan’s maximum out-of-pocket limit; that shows how much financial exposure remains if you have a serious illness or hospitalization.
4. Check access before considering a switch
Doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies
Confirm that your primary-care doctor, specialists, preferred hospital, and important pharmacies participate in the alternative plan for the new year. A directory can be outdated, so ask each provider and the plan. Check whether the plan requires referrals, uses prior authorization, or charges more when you leave its preferred network. A lower premium or larger giveback is not useful if changing plans forces you to leave clinicians who manage serious conditions.
Prescription coverage
Enter every prescription, including dose and frequency, into Medicare’s comparison tool. Verify the plan’s formulary tier, utilization rules, preferred pharmacies, mail-order terms, and estimated annual drug cost. A small change in drug coverage can outweigh a reduced giveback, particularly for specialty or high-cost medicines.

Service area and travel
Medicare Advantage availability and benefits are location-specific. Check whether the plan serves your county and whether its rules work for your travel pattern, seasonal residence, or care received outside the service area. Emergency and urgent-care rules do not make routine out-of-area care automatically in-network.
5. Compare plans using your ZIP code and coverage year
Use Medicare’s Plan Finder with your ZIP code and the year for which you need coverage. Medicare’s comparison resources emphasize that costs, benefits, networks, and service areas vary by plan and year. A national article, a friend’s premium, or a prior-year search cannot establish what is available to you.
Medicare’s explanation of plan types at Compare types of Medicare Advantage Plans can help you identify whether an HMO, PPO, or another structure fits your providers and travel needs. Compare at least these six dimensions:

- Total expected annual cost: combine premiums, medical cost sharing, prescriptions, and the giveback rather than ranking plans by one benefit.
- Provider access: confirm doctors, hospitals, specialists, and pharmacies.
- Drug cost and rules: check each medication, tier, pharmacy, and authorization requirement.
- Plan administration: note referrals, prior authorization, network restrictions, and rules for out-of-network care.
- Service area: verify county availability and how routine care works when you travel.
- Enrollment and effective date: confirm that you are allowed to make the requested change and when it begins.
Save or print the comparison results with the date you ran the search. Benefits can change during the next annual cycle, so a result from a different year is not a substitute for the current listing.

6. Know when you can change Medicare Advantage plans
You cannot generally change Medicare Advantage plans whenever you choose. The Medicare and You Handbook 2026 gives the following windows for 2027 coverage:
Annual Open Enrollment (October 15–December 7, 2026)
During this period, people can make the annual Medicare coverage choice for the following year. A change made during the window generally takes effect January 1, 2027. Confirm the deadline and effective date for the specific action you submit.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1–March 31, 2027)
If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this period may allow one permitted change. The handbook describes it as a January 1 through March 31 window. Check the rules for your situation before submitting an application; this period is not a general invitation for everyone to move between any Medicare options.

7. Consider help with the Part B premium itself
If the reduced giveback makes Medicare unaffordable, screen for a Medicare Savings Program before deciding that a plan switch is your only solution. Medicare explains these programs at Medicare Savings Programs. Depending on the program, assistance may include Part B premiums and, for some eligible people, deductibles, coinsurance, or copayments.
Eligibility, income and resource rules, application procedures, and names of programs vary by state. Contact your state Medicaid office or a qualified benefits counselor for a screening. Do not assume you qualify, and do not treat a screening result as approval until the state makes an eligibility decision.
8. Common mistakes after a giveback reduction
- Looking only at the lost monthly amount: A lower giveback can be offset by lower premiums, better drug coverage, or different cost sharing elsewhere in the plan.
- Assuming the giveback cancels Part B: You still need Part B and remain responsible for the premium obligation described by Medicare.
- Using a generic plan ranking: Availability and prices depend on your ZIP code, county, providers, prescriptions, and coverage year.
- Ignoring the maximum out-of-pocket limit: A low premium does not by itself protect you from high medical spending in a serious illness.
- Trusting a provider directory without confirmation: Ask the provider and plan whether participation continues for the new plan year.
- Missing the enrollment deadline: A good alternative does not help if you cannot enroll during a permitted period.
- Relying on an old document: Use the ANOC and EOC issued for the year you are evaluating.
9. A practical decision sequence
- Get written confirmation of the old and new giveback, effective date, and application method.
- Mark every change in the ANOC and verify the details in the EOC.
- List your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, pharmacies, expected services, and travel needs.
- Run Medicare Plan Finder for your ZIP code and target coverage year.
- Complete the cost worksheet for your current plan and realistic alternatives.
- Call providers and the plan to resolve network, drug, referral, and authorization questions.
- Check whether an enrollment window or special right permits the change and determine the effective date.
- If affordability remains the problem, request Medicare Savings Program screening through your state.
- Keep your notices, comparison results, applications, and dated plan responses together.
The right response to a reduced giveback is therefore a documented comparison, not an automatic switch. Choose the coverage that fits your total costs, medical and drug needs, providers, service area, and legally available enrollment window.
