Do not submit another IPO application just because one app shows “error.” A blocked amount is usually an ASBA hold: your bank has reserved the money, but has not necessarily debited it. Check three records separately—the application intermediary, the UPI mandate (if you used UPI), and the bank account hold. Their statuses can update at different times.
What a blocked IPO amount actually means
In an IPO application, the amount is normally blocked rather than immediately transferred. Under ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount), the bank places a hold on the amount you applied for. The money remains in your account and continues to earn interest. If you receive an allotment, the bank debits the amount needed for the allotted shares. If you receive no shares, no refund transfer is required because the hold is released instead.

With a UPI application, you submit the bid and your UPI ID through an eligible application intermediary. The exchange passes the bid information to the issue’s sponsor bank. You then authorize a UPI mandate, which blocks the funds in your linked bank account. On allotment, the allotted amount is debited and any excess is unblocked. NPCI’s process description summarizes this stage as: “Amount gets blocked in the Subscriber’s account.”

An “error” in a broker or UPI screen may be a display or synchronization problem while the bank hold and mandate remain active.

Check these three statuses before taking action
1. Application-intermediary record
Open the broker, bank or other designated intermediary through which you submitted the IPO bid. Record the IPO name, application number, bid quantity, bid amount and the status shown for the exchange application. Save a screenshot of the exact error, including its date and time.
Ask the intermediary to confirm whether the bid was transmitted to the exchange and whether its mandate request is pending, accepted, revoked or expired. Do not rely solely on a home-screen banner; ask for the application-level status.
2. UPI mandate
If you applied through UPI, open the UPI app’s Mandates, IPO mandates or pending transactions area. SEBI’s investor guidance says active requests can be checked in the mandate section. Record the Unique Mandate Number (UMN), if displayed, the sponsor bank, amount, expiry date and status.
A mandate that is active or awaiting authorization is different from a mandate that is revoked, rejected or expired. If you cancelled the IPO bid, do not approve a mandate that arrives later for that cancelled bid.
3. Bank-account hold
Check the bank’s available balance, lien or hold details, and account statement. Some banks show a separate “blocked amount,” “lien amount” or “earmarked funds” entry rather than a debit. Ask the bank whether the hold is linked to an IPO mandate and obtain the reference number used by the bank.

These checks matter because the intermediary may show an error while the bank has already placed the hold, or the UPI app may show a mandate while the intermediary has not yet refreshed its application record.
What to do in each situation
The bid is active and the amount is blocked
If the intermediary confirms an active bid, the UPI mandate is active or authorized, and the bank shows one corresponding hold, do not create a second application to clear the error. Keep the application number and UMN, and ask the intermediary to confirm that the exchange application and mandate are correctly linked.

For example, one broker publicly tells customers that a mandate may take until the close of the day to arrive or appear on its platform. That is an example from that broker, not a universal deadline for every intermediary or IPO. Follow the issue’s published timetable and your bank’s processing information rather than assuming that one app’s delay means the bid failed.
The bid is cancelled, but a mandate arrives later
Do not approve a late-arriving mandate for a bid you cancelled. SEBI warns that authorizing it can delay release of the blocked funds. A retail investor can withdraw a bid during the issue period through the same intermediary used to apply.

If you tried to modify or revoke the bid and received a technical error, ask that intermediary to initiate the modification or revocation again. Give it the application number, bid amount, UPI ID and UMN. If the revocation cannot be completed electronically, SEBI’s guidance says the bank must unblock the funds through an offline mechanism.
The issue has finalized allotment but the hold remains
After allotment is finalized, the bank should debit the amount for allotted shares and release any excess. If you received no allotment, the full hold should be released. If the hold still appears after the issue’s allotment and processing events, contact the bank and request manual unblocking. Also contact the registrar or application intermediary so it can verify the allotment and release instruction.

The amount appears blocked twice
Compare the two entries in your bank’s hold or lien view and the UPI mandate list. Do not assume that two identical-looking entries are merely duplicate displays. Complain to the bank or the issue’s lead manager and include both references, especially the UMN, application number and timestamps. Request confirmation of which hold is valid and when the other will be released.

No allotment is shown and the hold remains
If the registrar or intermediary shows no allotment but your bank still shows a hold, contact the institution connected to each stage:
- UPI app: report a mandate that remains active, pending or unreleased after the relevant issue event.
- Bank: report the lien or blocked amount and request release or manual unblocking.
- Registrar: ask it to confirm the allotment or non-allotment instruction sent for your application.
- Application intermediary: ask it to reconcile the exchange application with the mandate.
SEBI identifies these parties as complaint routes for funds that are not unblocked after non-allotment. Start with the party whose record shows the failure, but copy the other relevant party when the records conflict.

UPI mandate and bank ASBA: where to look
| Feature | UPI application | Bank ASBA application |
|---|---|---|
| Where status appears | UPI app mandate area and the application intermediary | Bank’s application or account records and the submitting intermediary |
| How authorization occurs | Investor approves a UPI mandate | Investor authorizes the ASBA request through the bank’s process |
| Where the hold is visible | Linked bank account, often with a corresponding UPI mandate | Bank account hold or lien record |
| At allotment | Allotted amount is debited; excess is unblocked | Amount for allotted shares is debited; the rest is released |
Neither route is universally error-proof. The key difference is the extra UPI authorization and mandate record in a UPI application. In both routes, a bank hold is a reservation of funds, not proof that the entire application amount has been finally taken.

SEBI’s investor guidance describes UPI IPO applications for retail individual investors and sets a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction. Verify the current limit and the particular issue’s documents because regulatory requirements and eligible-app lists can change.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Use a UPI ID linked to your own bank account.
- Use an eligible UPI app and participating bank.
- Apply through a designated application intermediary.
- Do not use a third-party bank account or UPI ID; such applications are not considered for allocation.
- Check that the bid amount, quantity, PAN and bank details match across the intermediary and mandate.
An eligibility problem can cause the bid to fail even when a temporary hold or mandate entry is visible. Ask the intermediary to state whether the exchange rejected the application or whether only the display failed.
A practical record-and-escalation checklist
- Write down the IPO name, issue dates, application number, bid quantity and amount.
- Record the submitting intermediary, bank account, UPI ID, sponsor bank and UMN.
- Capture the exact status or error in the intermediary, UPI app and bank records.
- Check whether the UPI mandate is active, pending, approved, revoked, rejected or expired.
- Check the bank’s available balance, hold or lien and statement entries.
- Ask the intermediary to confirm exchange transmission and mandate linkage.
- If the bid was cancelled, refuse any later mandate and request revocation again through the same intermediary.
- After allotment or non-allotment processing, request manual unblocking from the bank if the hold persists.
- Escalate to the registrar, UPI app, intermediary, bank or lead manager according to the unresolved record.
- Keep every acknowledgment, complaint number, email and screenshot until the amount is released or correctly debited.
What not to infer from an “error” message
- It does not automatically mean the exchange rejected the bid.
- It does not prove that the bank released the blocked amount.
- It does not prove that the amount was debited as payment.
- It does not justify submitting a duplicate application while the first hold is unresolved.
- It does not make a late mandate safe to approve after cancellation.
The exact state of an individual bid cannot be determined from a generic error label. Only the application number, issue records, mandate status and bank hold information can establish what happened.
When to seek further help
Contact the intermediary first when the exchange application or bid details are unclear. Contact the UPI app for a mandate-state problem, the bank for a lien or unblocking problem, and the registrar for an allotment mismatch. If a duplicate block or unresolved release involves more than one institution, send the same documented complaint to the bank and lead manager, identifying the UMN and both holds.
For a live issue, check the issue’s prospectus and notices as well as current SEBI and NPCI guidance. Public procedures cannot promise a bank-specific release time; processing depends on the issue timetable and the institutions handling your application.
