A higher renewal premium is a reason to review your coverage, not an instruction to accept the new price. Read the insurer and Marketplace or employer notices, identify whether the increase is in the plan’s full price or your after-subsidy bill, update your expected income and household information if you use the Marketplace, and compare the full cost and coverage of alternatives before the deadline. Confirm the replacement plan’s effective date and pay its first premium so you do not create a coverage gap.
Start by identifying what kind of coverage you have
The right response depends on where you bought the policy. Your renewal notice should make this clear, but the three common categories are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Individual Marketplace coverage: A plan selected through HealthCare.gov or a state Marketplace, potentially with an advance premium tax credit.
- Individual coverage bought outside the Marketplace: A policy purchased directly from an insurer or through another licensed channel.
- Employer-sponsored coverage: Insurance offered through your job, with the employer usually paying part of the premium.
Deadlines, available subsidies, plan choices and appeal routes differ among these categories. Do not assume that a federal Marketplace date applies to a state exchange or an employer plan.

Marketplace enrollees should keep two letters
A HealthCare.gov enrollee generally receives a Marketplace notice and an insurer notice. The Marketplace letter can explain your savings, required documents, application updates and enrollment actions. The insurer letter describes whether your current plan will be offered next year, any automatic replacement plan, benefit or network changes, and the premium after any tax credit shown by the insurer.

Read the notices together. A plan can have a higher full premium while your bill changes by a different amount because your tax credit changed. The notice may also say that your current plan is ending or that you will be matched automatically to another plan. Automatic matching is not a substitute for comparing the replacement with other available plans.
Employer-plan members need the open-enrollment materials
Employers can change employee contributions, plan options, provider networks, deductibles and other cost sharing from one year to the next. Review the employer’s open-enrollment guide and benefits summary, then ask human resources or the benefits administrator to explain any change you cannot match to the documents. There is no single national employer enrollment deadline established for every workplace; use the date in your employer’s notice.
If a notice is missing
Contact the organization that should have sent it. Marketplace questions about eligibility, applications and tax credits belong with the Marketplace. Questions about an insurer’s rate, benefits or renewal terms belong with the insurer. An employer-plan member should start with the benefits administrator.

Work out what actually increased
Separate the gross premium from the amount you pay
For Marketplace coverage, compare the plan’s full premium with the amount due after the advance premium tax credit (APTC). Your bill can rise because the insurer’s rate rose, because your APTC fell, because the plan’s price changed relative to other plans, or because more than one of these occurred. A dollar increase on your invoice alone does not identify the cause.

Marketplace savings are based on projected coverage-year income, household size and the plans available in your area. Update those details rather than carrying last year’s application forward without checking it. If the information is stale, you could receive too much assistance and have to repay some at tax time, or receive too little and overpay during the year.
Why Marketplace rates vary
HealthCare.gov identifies five factors that can affect a Marketplace premium: location, age, tobacco use, plan category and whether the policy covers dependents. States may limit how strongly some factors affect rates. A person’s health, medical history and sex cannot be used to set the premium. A change in your bill may still reflect plan availability or a different tax credit, so do not infer that your health caused the increase.
Put broad averages in perspective
Federal exchange averages illustrate why an individual bill cannot be predicted from a national figure. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported that, among HealthCare.gov consumers receiving APTC, the average after-APTC monthly premium increased by $15 from 2025 to 2026. The same 2026 report search result showed a $36 average increase for comparable consumers on state-based exchanges. These are exchange-level averages for defined populations and periods, not estimates of what any particular household will pay.

Many people may therefore see a larger bill even if their plan’s underlying rate did not change by the same amount.

Update your Marketplace application before you shop
If you have Marketplace coverage, complete the application review before relying on a displayed price. Use your best estimate of the income and household information for the coming coverage year, not only last year’s figures.
- Sign in to your Marketplace account. Open the renewal application and review every person listed for coverage.
- Enter projected annual income. Include expected changes in wages, self-employment income or other relevant household income for the coverage year.
- Check household details. Confirm who needs coverage and report changes such as marriage, divorce, a birth, a move or a dependent aging out of eligibility.
- Complete document requests. The Marketplace may ask for proof of income, immigration status or other eligibility information. Missing documentation can delay or change savings.
- Review the calculated tax credit. Compare the amount with the figure in the renewal notice and read any explanation of changed eligibility.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the application result, notices and plan details with your tax records.
Updating the application does not commit you to the renewing plan. It gives you a more accurate basis for comparing every available option.
Compare the whole coverage package, not just the monthly premium
A lower premium can cost more once you use medical care. Compare the following items in the official Marketplace or state-exchange tool and in each plan’s current documents.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Comparison area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly premium | Amount after any available subsidy; also note the full, unsubsidized price | Shows your recurring bill but not what care will cost |
| Deductible | Amount you pay before the plan generally starts paying for covered services | A low premium may come with a high upfront exposure |
| Copays and coinsurance | Fixed charges and percentage shares for visits, tests, procedures and medicines | These determine your cost when you use care |
| Out-of-pocket maximum | The plan’s annual limit for covered, in-network cost sharing | Shows the worst-case in-network exposure for a covered year, apart from premiums |
| Provider network | Current doctors, hospitals, specialists and facilities | Out-of-network care may cost substantially more or be excluded |
| Prescription coverage | Whether each medicine is covered, its formulary tier, copay or coinsurance, and any authorization rules | A plan that excludes a regular medicine can erase premium savings |
| Benefits and exclusions | Services your household expects to use, including mental-health, maternity or other important benefits | Coverage details can differ even when plan names look similar |
Run two household scenarios
Estimate the annual cost if everyone uses very little care: twelve months of premium plus likely routine expenses. Then estimate a high-use year: twelve months of premium, the deductible and expected copays or coinsurance up to the out-of-pocket maximum. These are planning scenarios, not guarantees, but they expose whether a low premium simply shifts cost into care.

Check doctors and hospitals directly with the insurer and confirm that the exact prescription and dosage are covered. Networks and formularies can change, so last year’s experience is not proof of next year’s coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose among renewal, a different Marketplace plan or off-Marketplace coverage
Renew the current plan
Renewal can make sense when your doctors, medicines and expected care fit the plan and the total projected cost remains acceptable. Still verify the new year’s network, formulary, deductible, cost sharing and effective date; a familiar plan name does not guarantee identical terms.
Switch to another Marketplace plan
Changing plans may reduce the premium or improve coverage, but compare the entire package. The Marketplace is also the only place to receive the federal premium tax credit and other Marketplace savings. A different metal category or network design can change both your monthly bill and your costs when you need treatment.

Coverage bought directly from an insurer can be compared with Marketplace options, but it generally cannot receive the federal premium tax credit. Include that lost assistance in the calculation. Confirm that the policy is comprehensive individual coverage and that the insurer and any agent are licensed in your state.

Meet the enrollment deadline and prevent a gap
For HealthCare.gov’s 2026–27 Open Enrollment, federal guidance lists November 1 through January 15. Enroll by December 15 for a January 1 effective date, or by January 15 for a February 1 effective date. State exchanges may publish different dates, and an employer plan follows its own notice.
A qualifying life event can create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period outside Open Enrollment. Examples and documentation requirements depend on the event, so check your Marketplace account or call center rather than assuming you qualify.
- Select the plan before the applicable deadline. Save the enrollment confirmation and plan identification.
- Verify the effective date. Do not cancel existing coverage until you know when the replacement begins.
- Pay the first premium directly to the insurer. HealthCare.gov states that coverage will not start until this payment is made.
- Check the member materials. Confirm that the insurer processed the enrollment and that cards, network information and pharmacy instructions are available.
Employer-sponsored coverage requires a different comparison
Start with the employer’s side-by-side plan summaries. Compare your payroll contribution, deductible, copays, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum, then verify the network and prescription list. Ask whether the employer contribution changed, whether dependents are priced differently and whether a spouse’s or partner’s plan is available. Request a written explanation of any discrepancy between the enrollment system and the benefits guide.
If the new employee contribution makes the plan unaffordable or the coverage changes substantially, ask the benefits administrator what alternatives are available and whether a qualifying event affects your ability to enroll elsewhere. The answer depends on the plan and your circumstances; the employer’s notice is the controlling source for its deadline.
Use the right help channel when the numbers do not make sense
- Marketplace account or call center: eligibility, application updates, tax credits, document requests, plan comparison and enrollment status.
- Insurer: premium calculation, renewal terms, network participation, formulary details, billing and first-payment confirmation.
- Employer benefits administrator: payroll deductions, employer contributions, plan options, workplace deadlines and eligibility rules.
- State insurance department: help with individual insurance purchased in the state, licensing concerns or a complaint about an insurer or agent.
- Licensed agent or enrollment assister: one-on-one help comparing available policies. Confirm the person and insurer are licensed in your state and ask whether any fee applies.
Keep copies of notices, screenshots, application confirmations, bills and the names and dates of people you contact. That record is useful if an enrollment or billing error must be corrected.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring the notice because the plan auto-renews: automatic renewal can preserve coverage while leaving you in a more expensive or less suitable plan.
- Comparing only the headline premium: deductibles, networks, medicines and the out-of-pocket maximum can dominate your annual cost.
- Leaving last year’s income unchanged: an inaccurate APTC can produce an unexpectedly large tax repayment or leave savings unused.
- Assuming a national deadline applies locally: verify state-exchange and employer dates in the relevant notice.
- Canceling before the replacement is active: wait for the effective date and pay the first premium.
- Trusting an old provider directory: confirm that each important doctor and facility is in the new plan’s current network.
A practical decision rule
Keep or change the plan only after you have an updated eligibility result, a side-by-side estimate of low-use and high-use annual costs, and confirmation that your essential doctors, hospitals and prescriptions are covered. If the increase is still affordable and the plan protects the care your household expects to need, renewal may be reasonable. If the network, medicines, cost sharing or total risk is worse, compare other Marketplace or eligible employer options before the stated deadline.
