Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA late or missing GST/HST credit payment usually has an identifiable cause: the payment date has not passed, a tax return is still being assessed, your address or banking information is outdated, eligibility changed, or the amount was applied to a debt. Start in CRA My Account rather than assuming the payment was cancelled. Check Benefits and credits, Mail and Profile, then compare the result with the official payment calendar.
The program name also changes during 2026. The Canada Revenue Agency lists GST/HST credit dates in January and April, then Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) dates in July and October. The same account checks and escalation process help whether your notice uses the old or new name.

1. Confirm the expected payment date and program name
Before troubleshooting, check the current CRA payment calendar and identify which benefit your payment belongs to. A payment can look “missing” simply because the scheduled date has not arrived, a weekend or holiday affects delivery, or the notice uses the new program name.

| GST/HST credit | Payment dates listed for January 5 and April 2, 2026. |
| Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly GST/HST credit) | CRA says the replacement begins in July 2026; dates listed for July 3 and October 5, 2026. |
| One-time GST/HST credit top-up | CRA says it started issuing this on June 5, 2026 to people entitled to the January 2026 GST/HST credit. |
CRA describes the change plainly: “The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will replace the GST/HST credit in July 2026.” A July or October payment may therefore appear as CGEB even though you previously knew the program as the GST/HST credit.

After the listed date, allow the working-day period shown in the calendar before calling. Depending on the calendar footnote for that payment, CRA says to wait five or 10 working days. Count that period from the scheduled date, not from the day you first noticed the deposit was absent.
2. Check CRA My Account before doing anything else
CRA directs recipients to four areas of My Account. Sign in directly through the CRA website; do not use a link in an unexpected email or text message.
Benefits and credits
Open Benefits and credits to see the payment status, amount and history. Look for a payment marked issued, pending, adjusted or stopped. A status showing that CRA has not issued the payment points to a return, eligibility or account issue rather than a bank-delivery delay. A status showing issued means you should verify the destination account and delivery timing.

Review Mail for notices of assessment, reassessment letters and benefit correspondence. CRA may explain a revised amount, a request for information, an eligibility decision or an offset against a debt in a notice rather than on the payment-history screen. Read the effective date and the period covered; a letter about one quarter does not automatically explain every future quarter.

Profile
In Profile, verify your mailing address, telephone number, marital or common-law status and direct-deposit details. An old bank account can send a payment to a closed account, while an outdated address can prevent you from receiving a notice that explains a change. Correct the information through the available CRA update options and keep a record of when you made the change.
Compare the payment history with your bank account
Match the exact amount and date in My Account to your bank statement. Do not rely only on a transaction description: a deposit may be labelled differently after the 2026 program change. If CRA shows an issued payment but your bank does not show it after the calendar’s delivery window, ask the bank whether the deposit was rejected or returned.
3. Make sure the required tax returns were filed and assessed
The GST/HST credit and its replacement are calculated from tax-return information. A late, missing or still-processing return can delay a payment even when you otherwise qualify.
Your own return
Check whether the income-tax return for the relevant benefit year was filed and whether CRA issued a notice of assessment. CRA gives an example in which a person filed late, received the notice of assessment, and then received the missed benefit in a later month. The sequence matters: filing alone may not trigger payment until CRA has processed the return.

A spouse or common-law partner’s return
CRA calculates family net income. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, both of you may need to file a return, even when one person had no income. A missing partner return can leave CRA without the family information needed to calculate the amount. Confirm that both returns were submitted and assessed for the applicable year.
Zero income does not automatically disqualify you
CRA eligibility rules allow income to be zero if the other conditions are met. Do not skip a return because you earned nothing; filing can be necessary for CRA to determine benefit entitlement.
4. Look for changes that can alter eligibility or the amount
A payment may stop or change after CRA reassesses your return or receives updated family information. In My Account and your notices, check for:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- a reassessment that changed family net income;
- a marriage, separation, common-law change or change in the number of children;
- a move into or out of Canada or another residency issue;
- an age or family-condition change relevant to the benefit period;
- a request for documents that has not been answered; or
- a return that CRA has not accepted or finished processing.
Eligibility depends on Canadian tax residency during the relevant period as well as the applicable age and family conditions. A change in circumstances can affect a quarter even if the previous quarter was paid normally. Read the notice for the exact period and reason instead of assuming that a stopped deposit means the entire program has ended.

5. Check whether CRA applied the payment to a debt
CRA can apply a benefit or credit to eligible tax or government debt. The result is that no money reaches your bank account even though CRA calculated an amount. This is an offset, sometimes called a set-off.
Look in Mail and correspondence in My Account for an explanation. The notice should identify the debt or authority involved and show how the amount was applied. Compare the offset amount with the missing payment: a full offset produces no deposit, while a partial offset may produce a smaller deposit than expected. If the notice concerns a debt you do not recognize, use the contact instructions in that notice and keep copies of your payment history.
6. Use this decision table to identify the next action
| What CRA shows | What it usually means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No payment listed; return is missing or processing | CRA may not yet have the income and family data needed to calculate the benefit. | File the required return, ensure a spouse or common-law partner files where applicable, and wait for assessment. |
| Payment listed as issued; bank has no deposit | Delivery or direct-deposit details may be the problem. | Verify Profile and your bank statement, then ask the bank whether the payment was rejected or returned. |
| Amount changed after a notice | CRA reassessed income, family status or another eligibility factor. | Read the notice for the affected period and follow its review or document instructions. |
| Notice says amount was applied to debt | An eligible tax or government debt offset absorbed all or part of the credit. | Review the set-off details and contact the office named in the notice if the debt or calculation is disputed. |
| Calendar date plus five or 10 working days has passed; no explanation appears | The issue cannot be resolved from the online record. | Call CRA’s individual tax and benefit line at 1-800-959-8281. |
7. Contact CRA after the waiting period
Do not call merely because a deposit is absent on the scheduled date. First complete the calendar check, My Account review, return check and notice review. Once the applicable five- or 10-working-day period has passed and no explanation is available, CRA says to contact the individual tax and benefit line at 1-800-959-8281.
Have information ready for identity verification, including details from your assessed tax return and any CRA correspondence. Explain the exact payment date, the program name shown in your account, what Benefits and credits displays, and whether a notice mentions reassessment or an offset. Ask whether the payment was issued, held pending assessment, returned by the bank or applied to a debt.

Record the date of the call, the subject of the discussion and any reference number or follow-up instruction. If CRA asks for documents, submit them through the channel and deadline specified in the notice; sending them elsewhere can delay processing.
8. Protect yourself from payment scams
Missing-benefit concerns attract impersonation scams. CRA says its email notifications do not ask for personal information or include links that require you to provide it. Treat an unexpected message requesting your Social Insurance Number, banking credentials, a credit-card number or a click to “claim” a payment as suspicious.
- Open your browser and sign in to CRA My Account yourself rather than clicking a message link.
- Check Benefits and credits, Mail and Profile inside the account.
- Do not send personal or banking information in reply to an unsolicited email or text.
- Use the published CRA telephone number, 1-800-959-8281, rather than a number supplied in a message.
9. What to gather before troubleshooting or calling
A short record makes it easier to separate a late payment from an eligibility or banking problem. Gather:
Recommended Free Tools
- the payment date and amount shown on the CRA calendar or in My Account;
- whether the entry is labelled GST/HST credit or Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit;
- the status and history shown under Benefits and credits;
- the date your relevant tax return and, where applicable, your spouse’s or common-law partner’s return were filed and assessed;
- your current address, marital status and direct-deposit details as shown in Profile;
- any reassessment, eligibility or debt-offset notice in Mail; and
- the date you completed the five- or 10-working-day wait.
This record also helps you spot a simple mismatch, such as a payment sent to an old account, before escalating a case that CRA has already explained.
10. How the 2026 transition affects a missing payment
The name change does not by itself mean you lost entitlement. CRA lists GST/HST credit payments on January 5 and April 2, 2026, and CGEB payments on July 3 and October 5, 2026. A notice or bank entry may use either name during the transition. The one-time top-up beginning June 5, 2026 applies to people entitled to the January 2026 GST/HST credit; it is separate from the regular July and October CGEB dates.
Use the date, status, tax-return assessment and correspondence—not the label alone—to determine what happened to a payment. If those records still do not explain the missing amount after the required waiting period, CRA’s individual tax and benefit line is the appropriate escalation route.
