What to Do If Your Fixed Deposit Receipt Is Missing or Incorrect (India)

If your fixed deposit receipt (FDR), term deposit receipt (TDR) or deposit advice is missing, contact the bank that issued the deposit and ask it to locate the deposit record, confirm the balance and maturity terms, and give you its current duplicate-receipt or maturity-payment procedure in writing. If a receipt contains an error, do not alter it yourself: compare it with the bank’s booking record and request written instructions for correcting the record or issuing a corrected advice.

This guidance is India-focused. Banks can differ on forms, indemnities, fees, processing times, documents and whether the original paper is required at maturity.

First establish which problem you have

A missing paper is not proof that the fixed-deposit account itself is missing. The bank’s core ledger, account number and customer-identification records are normally the starting point. An incorrect receipt is a different problem: the bank must establish whether the paper is wrong or whether the underlying booking record is wrong.

  • Lost, destroyed or stolen receipt: ask for the bank’s duplicate process and instructions for maturity or premature payment without the original.
  • Wrong particulars: identify the exact field, compare it with the bank’s booking confirmation or statement, and ask the bank to confirm the contractual deposit terms and correction method.
  • Damaged but surrenderable receipt: tell the bank what remains legible and whether you can surrender the original; some bank terms distinguish identifiable mutilation from a completely lost document.

A receipt is evidence of a deposit, but the legal status and operational treatment of that document are governed by the issuing bank’s terms. For example, ICICI Bank’s general FD terms describe its TDR or deposit advice as a non-transferable memorandum and not a negotiable instrument. That description should not be extended automatically to every bank’s document.

If your fixed deposit receipt is missing

1. Contact the issuing bank through an official channel

Start with the branch that booked the deposit, the branch currently servicing it, or the bank’s official customer-support channel. Explain that the physical receipt is missing and ask the bank to search its records. Have whatever identifying details you safely possess ready:

  • receipt, deposit or account number, if available;
  • name of every depositor exactly as recorded;
  • customer or CIF number, if known;
  • approximate principal amount and currency;
  • booking date, tenure and expected maturity date;
  • linked savings or current account details, without sending passwords, PINs or one-time codes.

Do not email identity documents or account credentials to an unverified address. Use the telephone number, secure message facility, mobile application or branch address published by the bank itself.

2. Give written notice and request the current duplicate procedure

Ask the bank to record the loss in writing and to tell you exactly what it requires in your case. The request should ask whether the bank needs an application, identity verification, an indemnity bond, affidavit, police report, surety or guarantee, fee, newspaper notice, or any other document. These items are not universal requirements; obtain the bank’s answer before preparing or paying for them.

ICICI’s published FD terms illustrate the written-notice approach: they say a depositor who loses a physical TDR must notify the bank in writing and follow the bank’s duplicate procedure, which may involve an indemnity. This is an example of one bank’s terms, not a rule for all Indian banks.

3. Ask how maturity will be handled

If maturity is close, say so explicitly. Ask whether the bank will:

  • issue a duplicate receipt before maturity;
  • accept a written maturity instruction without the original;
  • credit proceeds to a linked account after additional verification;
  • require the account holder to appear at a branch; or
  • place a temporary hold until the bank’s loss procedure is completed.

Request the answer, the expected date and a case or service-reference number in writing. Never assume that a missing receipt automatically prevents payment, or that payment will automatically proceed without it. The outcome can depend on the deposit type, customer category, maturity versus premature withdrawal and the bank’s current policy.

4. Complete only the documents the bank confirms

Read any indemnity carefully before signing. An indemnity can allocate financial responsibility if the bank later faces a competing claim, and a surety or bank guarantee can create obligations for the person providing it. Ask the bank to explain the amount, duration and release conditions, and keep a stamped acknowledgment or secure submission receipt for every document.

5. Preserve an audit trail

Keep copies of your written notice, identity-verification acknowledgment, forms, indemnity, correspondence, branch receipt and reference number. Record dates and names of officials. If the paper is later found, do not use it for a second claim; tell the bank and follow its instructions for surrender or cancellation.

If the details on your receipt are incorrect

1. Mark the exact discrepancy

Circle or list the field that appears wrong, such as a name spelling, principal, issue date, tenure, maturity date, interest rate, receipt number, deposit-account number or customer number. Do not overwrite, erase or hand-correct the receipt. Altering a bank-issued document can create an avoidable verification problem.

2. Compare the paper with the bank’s underlying record

Use the booking confirmation, account statement, renewal advice, online deposit view or branch-generated transaction record. The Reserve Bank of India says a term-deposit receipt should show full particulars. Section 5.8.1 of its Master Circular – Customer Service in Banks states: “Bank should issue term deposit receipt indicating therein full details, such as, date of issue, period of deposit, due date, applicable rate of interest, etc.”

A practical bank example is Central Bank of India’s FDR description, which lists the CIF number, deposit account number, depositor name or names, amount, period, due date and rate on its printed certificate. The exact layout at your bank may differ, but these are the kinds of particulars you should reconcile.

3. Ask the bank to confirm the contractual terms in writing

Tell the bank which value is disputed and ask it to confirm the deposit record, applicable rate, maturity date and maturity value. This is especially important when the discrepancy concerns principal, maturity date or interest rate: interest and product conditions follow the booked deposit and its terms, not an unverified handwritten interpretation of a paper.

Ask whether the bank will issue a corrected advice, amend its electronic record, cancel and reprint the receipt, or use another process. The reviewed Indian sources do not establish one universal correction form, fee or processing time, so follow the instructions of the bank that holds the deposit.

4. Submit supporting evidence only through the bank’s requested channel

The bank may ask for identity documents, the original receipt, a transaction statement, account-opening records or proof of a name change. Provide only what it requests through an official branch or secure channel. If the name changed legally, ask whether the bank needs the relevant certificate; do not assume that a spelling correction and a legal-name change use the same workflow.

What information should appear on an FDR?

Use this checklist when reviewing a receipt, while recognizing that each bank may add fields or use different labels.

Particular Why it matters
Depositor name(s) Confirms who owns the deposit and whether the names match the bank’s customer record.
Customer/CIF and deposit-account or receipt number Lets the bank locate the precise deposit and distinguish it from another account.
Principal amount and currency Establishes the amount placed, subject to the bank’s ledger and transaction evidence.
Date of issue or booking Anchors the start of the deposit period and the rate applicable at booking.
Deposit period or tenure Shows how long the funds were placed.
Due or maturity date Determines when maturity instructions and proceeds are ordinarily handled.
Applicable interest rate Allows you to check the rate against the booked product and terms.

The RBI’s requirement concerns full details, and banks may show additional instructions, nomination, payout or renewal information. If a field is absent or inconsistent, ask the bank to confirm what its official record says.

Bank rules can change the outcome

Do not treat one bank’s process as an industry-wide rule. The following examples show why the details of your case matter.

Situation What the published example shows How to use it
Physical TDR lost ICICI’s general FD terms require written notice and its duplicate procedure; an indemnity may be required. Use written notice as a sensible starting point, then obtain your own bank’s document list.
NRI deposit and lost or destroyed receipt ICICI’s NRE, NRO, FCNR and RFC terms describe a duplicate application identifying receipt number, amount, date and circumstances of loss, and allow indemnity plus approved sureties or a bank guarantee where required, subject to stated exceptions. These are named-account terms. A ₹500 threshold appearing in those exceptions is a bank-specific procedural condition, not a general Indian rule.
Original receipt reported lost and maturity proceeds credited to a linked CIF account An excerpt from Indian Bank’s 2025–26 deposit policy describes a limited case in which an indemnity bond need not be obtained. The exception excludes premature withdrawal and non-personal customers in the described policy. Verify the current policy and whether your account qualifies.

These examples do not establish a universal entitlement to payment without the original or a universal exemption from indemnity. They demonstrate the variables that can matter: bank, deposit product, resident or NRI status, personal or non-personal ownership, maturity versus premature withdrawal, and whether the original is genuinely lost or can be surrendered.

Maturity payment versus premature withdrawal

At maturity

Ask the bank what it needs to release or credit the maturity proceeds when the receipt is missing or contains an error. A linked-account credit may be treated differently from a cash payment, transfer to a third party or change in maturity instructions. Confirm the destination account and the maturity amount in writing before the due date.

Before maturity

Premature closure can involve different authorization, interest-rate and penalty rules from a normal maturity payment. A lost-receipt exception that works for a maturity credit may not apply to premature withdrawal. Tell the bank explicitly if you need early closure and request the applicable terms and calculated proceeds before authorizing it.

If the bank does not resolve the issue

  1. Send a concise written complaint to the branch or bank grievance channel, attaching the earlier reference number and copies rather than originals unless the bank requires an original.
  2. State the remedy you want: location and confirmation of the deposit, duplicate receipt, corrected advice, corrected booking record, or written maturity instructions.
  3. Keep the bank’s acknowledgment and response. If there is no satisfactory resolution, use the bank’s next-level grievance process.
  4. After exhausting the bank’s required route, check the current Reserve Bank of India complaint and ombudsman mechanism and its eligibility rules before filing. Older customer-service circulars should not be relied on for current escalation deadlines or portal instructions.

Do not send the same sensitive documents repeatedly to unrelated email addresses or agents claiming they can release the deposit. A legitimate bank process should identify the bank, the case and the documents required.

A ready-to-send written request

You can adapt this wording for a branch letter or secure message:

“I am the depositor for fixed deposit receipt/deposit account number [number], in the name of [name]. The physical receipt is missing / the following particulars appear incorrect: [field and value]. Please confirm the deposit recorded in your system, including principal, booking date, tenure, interest rate, maturity date and maturity value. Please provide your current procedure, required documents, fees and expected timeline for issuing a duplicate or corrected advice, and tell me how maturity or premature payment will be handled. Kindly acknowledge this request and provide a reference number.”

Checklist before you leave the branch or submit online

  • Have you identified the issuing or servicing bank and the deposit account?
  • Did you state whether the receipt is lost, destroyed, damaged or merely incorrect?
  • Did you list the exact disputed field rather than saying only that it is wrong?
  • Did the bank confirm the underlying record and maturity terms?
  • Did you receive written instructions on indemnity, identity proof, fees and timing?
  • Did you ask specifically about maturity versus premature payment?
  • Did you obtain an acknowledgment and case number?
  • Are all copies stored securely, with no passwords or one-time codes disclosed?

The Bottom Line

Report a missing receipt in writing to the issuing bank and obtain its duplicate or maturity-payment instructions. For an incorrect receipt, rely on the bank’s verified deposit record, not an altered paper, and require written confirmation of any correction and the deposit’s maturity terms.
