If your school says you are not enrolled, lists you below half time, or reports the wrong program or attendance dates, contact the registrar and financial aid office immediately. Have the registrar verify the official record for the affected term, then ask financial aid to identify the exact enrollment fact holding up your aid and the documents that will trigger a new review. Keep every request and response dated and in writing. If a federal loan also shows the wrong status, check StudentAid.gov and ask the school and your loan servicer to correct their records using the registrar’s documentation.

The correct fix depends on which record is wrong: your FAFSA, the school’s registration system, the aid office’s calculation, the enrollment status sent to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), or the servicer’s account. Correcting one record does not automatically change the others, and school deadlines and appeal procedures differ.

First, identify exactly what decision is on hold

“Enrollment error” can describe several different problems. A school may have dropped a class, failed to post an add/drop change, attached you to the wrong campus or program, recorded attendance incorrectly, or calculated your course load as less than half time. A FAFSA answer can also be wrong, or a school’s enrollment report can be correct while a federal loan servicer still displays an old status.

Start with the financial aid office because it makes the school’s aid offer. Ask for the specific term, record and decision involved, not just a general explanation that your aid is “pending.” Request answers to these questions:

  • Which enrollment fact is causing the delay or denial?
  • Is the disputed information in the FAFSA, the school registration or attendance record, the aid calculation, NSLDS, or the servicer’s system?
  • Which award, disbursement or loan status is affected?
  • Which office owns the correction?
  • What documents are required, where should you send them, and what is the next review date?
  • What written deadline applies to a correction, appeal, payment or registration hold?

You can write: “My aid is delayed or denied because my enrollment is listed as [status]. For [term], I believe the correct facts are [dates, courses, campus and program]. Please identify the system causing the issue, the documentation required, the office that can correct it, and the deadline and next review date. Please confirm in writing whether my aid will be reconsidered after the record is corrected.”

Match the problem to the record owner

Do not submit a FAFSA correction when the school’s registration database is wrong, and do not assume a registrar correction instantly updates a loan servicer. Use the route that controls the particular record.

Problem Record to inspect First correction route Possible effect
A FAFSA response is inaccurate FAFSA Submission Summary and FAFSA form Use the correction workflow in your StudentAid.gov account, then notify the school Federal and possibly nonfederal aid calculations
Registration or attendance is inaccurate Registrar or records enrollment record Request a registrar correction and send the dated confirmation to financial aid Aid eligibility review, disbursement and downstream reporting
Federal enrollment status is inaccurate StudentAid.gov My Enrollment history and pending changes Ask the school to correct its enrollment report and state when the update will reach NSLDS In-school loan status, deferment, grace period and repayment timing
The servicer still shows the wrong status Servicer account and the school’s attendance record Request a servicer review with registrar evidence; ask whether a deferment form is appropriate Loan billing and repayment status

The FAFSA Submission Summary is an eligibility overview, not the school’s final award decision. Federal Student Aid states: “Your FAFSA Submission Summary is not a financial aid offer.”

Have the registrar verify the underlying enrollment facts

Check registration, course load and dates

Ask the registrar or records office to confirm, for the exact term, your registered courses, credit or clock-hour load, add/drop changes, campus, academic program and attendance dates. Compare its record with your registration confirmation, schedule, learning-management attendance records, dated add/drop emails and any written approval for a late change. A screenshot of a schedule can help, but ask for an official record or signed confirmation whenever possible.

Request a dated correction

If an entry is wrong, ask the registrar to correct it and provide a dated confirmation, corrected transcript or other official record. Ask when the correction will be sent to financial aid and, if relevant, to NSLDS. Federal Student Aid specifically directs borrowers who dispute a mistaken loan status based on at-least-half-time attendance to obtain attendance-date records from the registrar.

Separate attendance from registration

Being registered for a course does not always prove that you began attendance under the aid rules. If the dispute involves a course you added, dropped or never attended, ask the registrar and financial aid office which attendance evidence they require. A correction may change the enrollment intensity used for aid, and the school may have recalculation or withdrawal obligations even after a record is fixed.

Correct FAFSA information only when the FAFSA itself is wrong

Open your FAFSA Submission Summary and read its “next steps” messages. If a personal, financial or other FAFSA answer is incorrect, submit a correction through your StudentAid.gov account and tell the school that a corrected submission is pending. The school will use FAFSA information in its aid process, but it still determines the school-level offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the FAFSA answers are accurate and the problem is a course load, attendance date, campus or program in the school’s system, editing the FAFSA will not repair that enrollment database or an NSLDS report. Send the registrar’s confirmation to financial aid instead. Ask the aid office to tell you whether it needs to wait for a new FAFSA transaction, a registrar update, or both.

Check your federal loan enrollment on StudentAid.gov

Review My Enrollment

StudentAid.gov’s My Enrollment area displays current and past reported campus or program enrollment and pending changes. Federal Student Aid says this information is used to determine when loans enter repayment and whether you qualify for an in-school deferment. Check the school, program, attendance level and effective dates shown there, and save a screenshot with the date.

Ask the school about its NSLDS correction

If My Enrollment is wrong, ask the school which enrollment record it will correct and when it expects the change to reach NSLDS. The school’s reporting operation is separate from your aid appeal. A corrected NSLDS entry may resolve a loan-status problem, but it does not guarantee that a delayed grant, scholarship or campus aid will be restored on the same schedule.

Understand the 2026–2027 reporting windows

The 2026–2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook describes these institutional operations: a school generally has 15 days to certify a received NSLDS enrollment roster; schools generally report enrollment changes within 30 days, unless they use a roster expected within 60 days; and records rejected by NSLDS reporting edits are described as being corrected and resubmitted within 10 days. These are school reporting rules, not promises about how quickly a student’s aid review, FAFSA processing or appeal will finish.

When the loan servicer still shows the wrong status

Ask your federal loan servicer what enrollment status and effective date it has on file. Explain that the school’s attendance record is different and provide the registrar’s dated documentation through the servicer’s approved submission channel. Ask the servicer to confirm receipt, identify any missing information and state whether it will place the account in the correct status after the school’s NSLDS update.

Eligible borrowers enrolled at least half time may qualify for an in-school deferment. If school reporting has not yet updated NSLDS, ask the servicer whether an in-school deferment form is appropriate while the correction is pending. Eligibility and handling depend on the loan type and your circumstances; a form is not an automatic approval. Continue watching the account for a payment due date and ask what to do if a bill arrives before the status is corrected.

Ask financial aid to reconsider the affected award

Once the registrar confirms the correction, send the evidence to financial aid and request a review of the specific award or disbursement that was delayed or denied. Ask for the result in writing, including the enrollment level used, the aid period, any recalculated amount and the date funds or a revised decision will post.

Do not assume that correcting enrollment guarantees the original aid. Course load, actual attendance, program eligibility, campus, satisfactory academic progress and withdrawal rules can change the calculation. Federal handbook guidance requires schools to recalculate in some situations when a student attends some but not all scheduled courses, and separate Return of Title IV Funds rules can apply after a withdrawal.

Protect yourself if a bill or registration deadline is close

Contact the bursar or student accounts office as soon as a balance, class-cancellation date or housing deadline is approaching. Ask whether the school offers a temporary administrative hold, payment arrangement, late-fee pause or other local option while financial aid reviews the corrected record. Get the terms and expiration date in writing. These options are controlled by the institution and are not guaranteed by federal guidance.

Ask financial aid for the institution’s correction, review, appeal and emergency-aid procedures. No single national appeal deadline governs every enrollment-error case. A school may set its own deadline for submitting documents or requesting reconsideration, so ask for the exact date and the consequence of missing it.

Keep a complete paper trail

Create one chronology for the issue. Include:

  • The date and term involved, courses, credits or hours, campus and program.
  • Names and departments of every person contacted.
  • Case, ticket or reference numbers.
  • Registration confirmations, schedules, attendance evidence and add/drop notices.
  • FAFSA Submission Summary messages and correction confirmations.
  • My Enrollment screenshots showing the reported status and effective dates.
  • Every form, email, upload receipt and written response.
  • Payment, registration or loan-billing deadlines that could be affected.

After a phone call, send a short email confirming what was said and the promised next step. If an office cannot identify the correction owner or deadline, ask for a supervisor. If necessary, use the school’s published student complaint or ombuds route, recognizing that escalation paths are institution-specific.

Common situations and the right first move

The school says you are below half time, but your schedule shows enough credits

Ask the registrar to verify that every course is attached to the correct term, campus and program and that an add or late registration posted. Send the official confirmation to financial aid and ask it to recalculate the affected award. If a federal loan is involved, compare the corrected school record with My Enrollment and ask when NSLDS will update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You dropped one class and aid was denied afterward

Ask financial aid whether the change triggered a recalculation, an attendance review or a withdrawal-related rule. Confirm the date you added or dropped the course and whether you attended any part of it. The answer may be a lawful adjustment rather than a database error, even if the schedule display was also incorrect.

Your FAFSA is accurate, but the school lists the wrong program or campus

Do not change the FAFSA merely to match the erroneous school record. Ask the registrar to correct the program or campus assignment, then request a new financial aid review. Explain any effect on eligibility, disbursement or institutional aid in your written request.

The school corrected its record, but a loan bill arrived

Send the registrar’s evidence to the servicer, ask it to review the effective date and ask whether an in-school deferment form is available for your situation. Request written confirmation of the account’s current status and what payment, if any, is required while the update is pending.

What not to assume

  • Do not treat the FAFSA Submission Summary as an award letter.
  • Do not assume changing a FAFSA answer changes the registrar, financial aid or NSLDS records.
  • Do not treat the 15-, 30- or 10-day NSLDS operations windows as a guaranteed student-facing decision deadline.
  • Do not assume a corrected enrollment record restores the original aid amount.
  • Do not stop checking bills or registration notices while an office is reviewing your case.
  • Do not rely on a phone promise without a dated written confirmation.

When outside help is appropriate

Ask a supervisor or the institution’s published student-advocacy, complaint or ombuds office for help when staff disagree about who owns the record, a deadline is imminent, or a correction has not been acknowledged. For federal loan reporting, continue working with the school and servicer and keep copies of all evidence. The appropriate escalation and any emergency assistance depend on the institution, program, loan type and state; federal guidance does not create one universal appeal process for this situation.
