First identify whether the changed figure is a FAFSA estimate, your school’s final aid offer, or a scheduled disbursement. Then check StudentAid.gov for corrections and verification requests, ask the financial aid office for the specific hold-up and a date, request an aid adjustment if your circumstances changed, and work through school and federal alternatives before considering private borrowing.
First, identify which amount changed
Federal Student Aid describes the FAFSA Submission Summary as an estimate based on the information you submitted. It is not the school’s final aid offer or a guarantee of a particular loan amount. After admission, the school determines and sends its own offer. Start by locating the exact document, portal line, or account status that changed.

| What you are looking at | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| FAFSA Submission Summary | An estimate based on your processed FAFSA information; it does not promise a loan amount. | Open the processed summary and review the FAFSA Form Answers and Next Steps tabs. |
| School financial-aid offer | The institution’s proposed package for the aid year after it has reviewed your application and eligibility. | Compare the original and revised line items, loan type, aid year, and status in the school portal. |
| Billing or disbursement record | Whether the school has scheduled, released, or held funds that were already offered. | Ask the financial aid office what requirement is pending and ask the billing office whether a separate payment deadline applies. |
A lower school offer and a late disbursement require different fixes. A lower offer calls for an explanation of the eligibility calculation or a review of changed circumstances. A late disbursement may be waiting for a document, correction, enrollment check, or another school requirement.
Work through this five-step check before borrowing elsewhere
1. Review your processed FAFSA on StudentAid.gov
- Sign in to StudentAid.gov and open the processed FAFSA Submission Summary for the relevant aid year.
- Read the FAFSA Form Answers tab. Check household, income, marital-status, and school information for an answer that is missing or no longer accurate.
- Open Next Steps. If you were selected for verification, the summary or school instructions should identify documents the institution needs. The school generally cannot finish processing aid until those requested items are received.
- Confirm that the intended school received your FAFSA information. If the school is missing from the list or has not imported the record, ask the office whether a correction or resubmission is needed.
Do not assume that a changed estimate proves the school made a mistake. A correction, a verification request, or a school-specific review can change the amount used in the offer.

2. Compare the school’s original and revised records
Save or print both versions of the offer if the portal shows them. Record the aid year, each loan type, the original amount, the revised amount, and whether the line says offered, accepted, scheduled, or disbursed. Note the date the change appeared. Those details let the office investigate the same transaction rather than a general “my aid is missing” question.
3. Contact the financial aid office with a focused question list
Use the phone number or secure message method published by the school. Ask the office to identify which category applies to your case, rather than suggesting a diagnosis:
- Is the change an eligibility calculation, a missing FAFSA or verification item, a school adjustment, or a disbursement issue?
- Which requirement or document is still pending, if any?
- What amount and loan type does the school currently consider eligible?
- What action must I take, and who should receive it?
- When does the office expect a decision or disbursement?
- Does the school or its billing office have a separate tuition deadline while this is pending?
Ask for the answers in writing through the student portal or email, and keep copies of documents you submit. Federal Student Aid does not publish one deadline that applies to every school’s offer review or loan disbursement, so the institution’s stated date is the useful date for your situation.

4. Complete corrections and verification exactly as requested
If the FAFSA contains an error, follow the correction instructions in the account and then ask the school when it expects the corrected record. If verification is listed, submit every requested form and supporting document in the format and through the channel the school specifies. Sending only part of a checklist can leave the same hold in place.
5. Protect the bill while the review is open
Ask the financial aid office and the student accounts or billing office whether a payment plan, temporary arrangement, or other institutional process is available. Confirm the date, amount, and consequence of missing a bill while aid is pending. A payment plan may manage timing, but it does not increase your aid eligibility, so keep pursuing the underlying review.
If your finances changed, request an aid adjustment
The FAFSA uses information that may no longer describe your household. A significant event such as job loss can be raised with the school’s financial aid office. Ask whether you may request an aid adjustment, often called professional judgment, and what documentation the institution requires. Examples of evidence might include the documents the school specifically requests about the changed circumstance; do not send sensitive records through an unapproved channel.

The school applies its own policy and reviews the facts in your request. An adjustment is discretionary: requesting one does not guarantee a higher offer, a particular loan, or a faster disbursement. Federal Student Aid states, “Any decision by the school is final and can’t be appealed to the U.S. Department of Education.” That statement applies to the school’s decision on an aid-adjustment or professional-judgment request; it does not turn an unresolved processing question into an automatic denial. Read the office’s written explanation and ask what other institutional options remain.

Why did my student loan offer go down?
Only the school can explain an individual reduction. The following are categories to ask about, not conclusions about your case.
| What you see | What to ask the school | Useful record to keep |
|---|---|---|
| The FAFSA estimate changed | Was a correction processed, and did the school receive the updated FAFSA? | The original and current Submission Summaries and their processing dates. |
| The school requests documents | Which verification or eligibility item is outstanding, and is the award calculated only after submission? | The complete request list, submission receipts, and the date each item was accepted. |
| One loan line is smaller | Which loan type and aid-year rule produced the revised amount, and is another eligible federal loan available? | The offer versions showing loan type, amount, and status. |
| The offer is unchanged but money has not arrived | Has disbursement been scheduled, released, or held, and what condition must clear first? | The portal status, expected date, and any billing deadline. |
| Your income or household situation changed | Can I request professional judgment, and exactly what evidence does your policy require? | Your written request and the school’s written decision. |
What to do if your student loan hasn’t disbursed
A school can offer a loan before it releases funds. Ask whether you completed every acceptance, promissory-note, counseling, enrollment, or verification step shown in your portal, and ask the office to identify any school-specific condition still open. The office should be able to distinguish an eligibility hold from a release-date or billing-system issue.

Request an estimated disbursement date, but treat it as the school’s current expectation rather than a nationwide guarantee. Ask whether funds will first be applied to your account and whether a remaining balance is due before that date. If the date could affect registration or housing, ask the billing office for its separate deadline and obtain any temporary arrangement in writing.

Federal Student Aid recommends looking at federal and school resources before private or alternative loans. Compare the options in writing; availability and amounts depend on your school, aid year, and eligibility.

| Institutional or state aid | Emergency grants, need-based funds, state programs, and whether a separate application is required. | Whether it is a grant or a loan, renewal conditions, and any service or enrollment requirement. | Ask the school or state agency when an award can be posted. |
| Scholarships | School, community, employer, or professional-association awards for which you still qualify. | Whether funds are one-time or renewable and whether they are sent to the school or to you. | Confirm the award decision and payment date. |
| Payment plan | Installment dates, enrollment requirements, setup fees, and the amount due before aid arrives. | Whether missed installments create fees or affect registration; a plan is not a loan cancellation. | Billing office sets the schedule. |
| Additional eligible federal loan | Whether the school can certify any remaining federal eligibility and the maximum it can offer you. | Fixed federal terms, fees, repayment choices, and when repayment begins under the specific loan. | School must confirm eligibility and certify the amount. |
| Private education loan | Only after the preceding options; compare several written offers and the actual promissory note. | Credit check, cosigner liability, variable or fixed rate, fees, in-school payments, repayment flexibility, and hardship protections can differ from federal loans. | Lender and school certification determine timing; do not assume approval or quick funding. |
Federal Student Aid’s comparison emphasizes that private loans can differ in interest rates, fees, credit and cosigner requirements, repayment options, and protections. A lower advertised rate may depend on excellent credit or a cosigner and may not be available to you. Compare the total cost and the obligations in the contract, not just the monthly payment.

If a Parent PLUS application was denied
An adverse-credit denial for a Parent PLUS Loan has specific next steps. The parent applicant can ask about obtaining an endorser or appealing the decision with documentation that explains the adverse credit information. Federal Student Aid also describes PLUS Credit Counseling for these routes. None of them guarantees approval or a particular amount.
If a parent cannot obtain PLUS, the dependent student may be eligible for additional Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds. The school must confirm whether that eligibility applies and what amount it can certify; do not treat the denial alone as an automatic award. Ask the financial aid office to explain the school’s process and deadline before turning to private borrowing.
Read the official options and counseling requirements at Federal Student Aid’s PLUS-denial guidance.

When and how to escalate a stalled case
Start with the financial aid office because it controls the school’s offer, document review, and disbursement workflow. Send a concise written follow-up after each call: identify the aid year, changed line, original and revised amounts, documents submitted, and the date the office gave you. Ask who owns the next action and when you should check back. Keep the school’s response with your billing records.
Federal Student Aid’s Fiscal Year 2024 annual report recorded more than 8,100 student or borrower complaint cases involving over 2,200 educational institutions. The report says those cases were reviewed and resolved; approximately 1,180 concerned delays receiving aid at the institution, 990 concerned grant disbursement, and 910 concerned loan disbursement. These are complaint-case counts, not the number of all students who experienced a delay and not a current-year rate. They show why preserving a clear paper trail matters, but they do not predict the outcome of your case. The report is available at Federal Student Aid’s Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether the changed figure is a FAFSA estimate, a school offer, or a disbursement status.
- Review FAFSA Form Answers and Next Steps on StudentAid.gov, including any correction or verification request.
- Confirm the intended school received the FAFSA record.
- Save original and revised offers and note the aid year, loan type, amounts, and status.
- Ask the financial aid office for the pending requirement, responsible person, expected decision or disbursement date, and billing deadline.
- Submit requested documents through the school’s approved channel and keep proof.
- If a major financial circumstance changed, ask about professional judgment and its documentation rules.
- Cover a remaining gap in order: institutional or state aid, scholarships, a payment plan, additional eligible federal loans, then carefully compared private loans.
- For a Parent PLUS adverse-credit denial, ask about an endorser, an appeal with documentation, PLUS Credit Counseling, and possible additional student Direct Unsubsidized eligibility.
The safest response to a reduced or delayed offer is a documented sequence: verify the record, obtain the school’s specific explanation and date, request a review when circumstances warrant it, and borrow privately only after federal and school-based choices have been checked.
