What to Do if Your Dividend Income Was Reported in the Wrong Tax Year

If a Form 1099-DIV puts a dividend in the wrong tax year, do not simply move the amount based on the date cash reached your account. First establish the dividend’s federal tax year from the declaration, record-date and payment details. Certain mutual fund, regulated investment company (RIC) and real estate investment trust (REIT) dividends declared late in one year and paid in January are treated as received on December 31 of the declaration year. If the information return is wrong, ask the issuer for a corrected Form 1099-DIV. If you already filed a return and the correction changes income or tax, generally amend that year with Form 1040-X.

Start by determining which tax year is correct

A January payment is not automatically income for the new year. Federal rules can assign a dividend to the year in which it was declared, depending on the type of payer and the dates involved. Gather the transaction facts before changing a return or asking for a correction.

The special January-payment rule

IRS Publication 550 describes a year-end rule for certain mutual fund, RIC and REIT dividends. When the distribution is declared in October, November or December for shareholders of record in one of those months and is paid during January, “the shareholder is considered to have received the dividend on December 31.” The dividend is therefore reported in the year it was declared, not necessarily the calendar year in which the cash was deposited.

This rule is limited. It does not automatically apply to every dividend paid in January, every stock, or every brokerage account. Confirm that the payer is a qualifying fund, RIC or REIT and that the declaration and record dates fit the rule. The payer’s year-end tax statement and corporate-action records can help, but retain the underlying records if the dates are disputed.

Information to verify

Fact Why it matters Where to look
Payer and security type Determines whether the January-payment rule can apply. Form 1099-DIV, account statement and issuer or fund notice.
Declaration date Shows when the dividend was declared and may establish the reporting year for a qualifying distribution. Issuer announcement, fund distribution notice or brokerage records.
Shareholder-of-record date The special rule requires a record date in October, November or December. Issuer notice or transaction history.
Payment date Confirms whether the distribution was paid in January and helps distinguish ordinary timing from the special rule. Brokerage transaction ledger and bank deposit.
Tax year printed on Form 1099-DIV Shows what the payer reported to you and the IRS, but can still be wrong. Form 1099-DIV and tax-document center.

Do not choose a year from the cash date alone. If the records do not clearly resolve the timing, ask the payer or a tax professional to confirm the federal treatment before filing or amending.

If the 1099-DIV itself is wrong

When the form has an incorrect amount, tax year or other information, contact the issuer or your broker and request a corrected Form 1099-DIV. IRS Publication 550 says that “you should ask the issuer for a corrected form.” A broker may need to obtain the correction from the fund or corporation that supplied the original data.

Make the correction request useful

  1. Identify the account, security, distribution amount and tax year printed on the form.
  2. Explain the discrepancy and provide the declaration, record-date and payment information you found.
  3. Ask specifically for a corrected Form 1099-DIV, not merely a change to an online display.
  4. Save the original form, the corrected form, statements, issuer notices and your written request or call reference.

Keep both versions. The original documents show what was first reported; the corrected form shows the issuer’s final position. If the issuer refuses to correct a form, document the response and use the transaction records when deciding how to report the income. A tax professional can help evaluate an unresolved disagreement, especially when a large amount or more than one year is involved.

What to do before filing your federal return

If you have not filed the affected return, wait for the corrected information when practical and prepare the return for the year that the federal rules assign to the dividend. Use that tax year’s Form 1040 instructions, schedules and income-tax rates. Do not transfer a prior-year amount to the current-year return simply because the payment arrived in January.

Check every relevant 1099-DIV box

For the 2025 Form 1040, ordinary dividends from Form 1099-DIV box 1a are reported on Form 1040 line 3b, while qualified dividends from box 1b are reported on line 3a. These line references are year-specific; use the instructions for the return you are preparing or correcting.

A distribution may also include capital-gain distributions, exempt-interest dividends, foreign tax, or nominee amounts. The IRS 1099-DIV FAQ directs recipients to the Form 1099-DIV recipient instructions and Schedule D instructions for the other boxes. Correcting only ordinary dividends can leave the return wrong if another box changes.

Know when Schedule B is required

The 2025 Form 1040 instructions generally require Schedule B when ordinary dividends exceed $1,500 or when you received nominee dividends belonging to someone else. The $1,500 threshold and line instructions are for the 2025 form; verify the applicable instructions for any other tax year. Nominee income may require reporting the full amount received and separately identifying the portion that belongs to another person.

If you already filed the return

When moving the dividend to the correct year changes reported income, tax, credits or tax liability, the IRS generally uses Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The Form 1040-X instructions and IRS Tax Topic 308 explain the process.

Amend each affected year separately

Form 1040-X is filed by tax year. If the error caused income to be reported in the wrong year, one year may need income removed and another year may need income added. The IRS instructions require a separate Form 1040-X for each year being changed; do not combine two years on one amendment.

Prepare the amendment in a controlled sequence

  1. Obtain the originally filed return, the original and corrected Forms 1099-DIV, brokerage statements and any issuer correspondence.
  2. Recalculate the affected year using that year’s Form 1040 and schedule instructions. Include the corrected dividend classification and any associated changes to qualified-dividend calculations, Schedule B, Schedule D, credits or deductions.
  3. Complete Form 1040-X with the originally reported or previously adjusted figures, the net changes and the corrected figures, as required by the form instructions.
  4. Write a concise explanation identifying the incorrect tax year, the correct year, the issuer’s correction and the documents supporting the change.
  5. Attach or transmit the schedules and forms required for the amended return, following the current Form 1040-X instructions, and retain a complete copy and proof of submission.

If the amended calculation shows additional tax, pay attention to the payment instructions and any interest or penalty that may apply. If it shows an overpayment, the refund may be limited by the applicable claim period.

How a wrong-year dividend can affect two returns

Moving income between years can change more than the dividend line. The amount may affect the tax rate applied to other income, the qualified-dividend calculation, deductions or credits tied to adjusted gross income, and whether Schedule B is required. Recompute each affected return rather than copying the original tax calculation and changing one line.

Situation Likely action
1099-DIV is wrong and the return is not filed Request a corrected form, then report the dividend on the correct year’s return.
1099-DIV is corrected after filing, and tax changes Recalculate the filed year and submit Form 1040-X for that year.
Income was put in the newer year but belongs in the prior year Amend the newer year to remove it and the prior year to add it, if both returns were filed and both figures change.
January payment may qualify for the fund/RIC/REIT rule Verify declaration and record dates before moving the income; the payment date alone is insufficient.
Issuer will not correct the form Keep the request record, assemble transaction evidence and obtain professional advice if the amount or disagreement is material.

Refund deadlines and additional tax

Correcting the year can produce either additional tax or a refund. IRS Tax Topic 308 states the general federal refund-claim period as three years after the original return was filed or two years after the tax was paid, whichever is later. Special rules can change that result in some circumstances. Calculate the dates for each affected year; do not assume an amendment will be accepted merely because the underlying 1099-DIV was corrected.

If the correction increases tax for a prior year, file promptly and follow the current payment instructions. If the correction reduces tax, preserve evidence of when the original return was filed and when tax was paid so you can evaluate the claim period. The federal deadline does not determine a state deadline.

Common examples

Qualifying fund dividend paid in January

A qualifying mutual fund declares a dividend in December, sets a December record date and pays shareholders in January. If the distribution fits the Publication 550 rule, it is treated as received on December 31 and belongs on the December year’s return. A January bank deposit does not by itself move it to the next year.

January dividend that does not meet the rule

A corporation pays a regular dividend in January, but the distribution does not meet the qualifying fund, declaration-date and record-date conditions. Do not apply the special rule automatically. Use the issuer’s corrected information and the applicable tax-year instructions after confirming the facts.

Correction after both returns were filed

A broker first reports a dividend in the wrong year, then issues a corrected form. Recalculate both years if both returns were filed and the change affects each one. Submit a separate Form 1040-X for each affected year and explain the correction in each filing.

Federal correction versus state filing

The rules discussed here are federal individual-income-tax rules. A state may use different conformity rules, forms, deadlines or treatment for dividends and amended returns. After fixing the federal reporting year, check the tax authority for every state in which you filed or owe a return. Do not assume that a federal Form 1040-X automatically amends a state return.

When professional help is worthwhile

Self-correction is often manageable when one issuer, one modest dividend and one unfiled return are involved. Consider help correcting a prior-year tax return when the issuer is unresponsive, the distribution spans multiple years, the amount is substantial, or the year change affects credits, investment-income taxes or several state returns. Give the adviser the original and corrected forms, transaction history, issuer correspondence and copies of the affected returns.

Final checklist

  • Compare the 1099-DIV with brokerage and fund records.
  • Record the payer, declaration date, record date, payment date and printed tax year.
  • Test the limited January-payment rule for qualifying mutual fund, RIC and REIT distributions.
  • Ask the issuer for a corrected Form 1099-DIV when the information return is wrong.
  • Keep the original form, corrected form and correction request.
  • Use the correct year’s Form 1040 instructions and review every relevant 1099-DIV box.
  • Use Form 1040-X when an already-filed federal return’s income or tax changes.
  • File a separate Form 1040-X for each affected year.
  • Check the federal refund-claim window and the applicable state rules.
