Different numbers from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are often normal. A credit score depends on the report data available to the scoring company, the scoring model and version, the type of credit being evaluated, and the date the score was calculated. A gap by itself does not prove that a bureau made a mistake. The right response is to confirm that the scores are comparable, inspect all three credit reports, and dispute any specific inaccurate entry with every bureau showing it and with the company that supplied the information.
Why your credit scores can differ
A credit score is an estimate calculated from information in a credit report. The three nationwide bureaus may receive different information from lenders or update it on different schedules. Even when the underlying data is identical, a lender can use a different scoring formula, version or industry-specific score. The date of calculation also matters: a balance or payment reported yesterday may not appear in a score calculated last week.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains these causes in its credit-score explainer. Mortgage lenders may use yet another combination of bureau data and scoring models, as described in the CFPB’s mortgage guidance.

| Comparison point | What to record | Why it changes the number |
|---|---|---|
| Bureau or data source | Equifax, Experian, TransUnion or another named source | Each report can contain different accounts, balances, dates or payment histories. |
| Scoring company and model | The model name and version, if shown | Models weigh report information differently and may use different score ranges. |
| Product or industry | Mortgage, auto, credit card, insurance or educational score | Industry versions can be tuned to predict risk for a particular product. |
| Calculation date | The date or “as of” date | Reports change as lenders send updates, so scores from different days are not a controlled comparison. |
Many commonly displayed scores use a 300-to-850 scale, but the CFPB notes that scoring companies can use different ranges. Check the scale and model before treating two numbers as if they should match.

When a difference is harmless—and when to investigate
Usually harmless differences
- The scores come from different bureaus whose reports were updated on different days.
- One service shows an educational or general-purpose score while a lender uses a product-specific model.
- The numbers were calculated on different dates or use different score ranges.
- A lender is evaluating a particular product, such as a mortgage, rather than the generic score shown in an app.
Signs that the reports need a closer look
- An account, collection or inquiry appears that you do not recognize.
- A balance, credit limit or payment status conflicts with your statements.
- A paid or closed account is reported as open, delinquent or carrying a balance.
- The same debt appears more than once.
- Your name, address or other identifying details are wrong or mixed with another person’s information.
A numerical discrepancy alone is not evidence of fraud. The underlying report entry is what you must verify.
Step 1: Confirm that the scores are actually comparable
- Write down the source. Note which bureau report supports each score and whether the number came from a lender, a card issuer, a monitoring service or an educational tool.
- Capture the model and score type. Look for the scoring company, model or version, product label and score range. If the display does not identify them, treat the number as a tracking signal rather than a lender-equivalent quote.
- Record the calculation date. A score shown today may have been calculated using an earlier report snapshot.
- Ask what the lender will use when borrowing. Before an application, request the bureau data, model and score type relevant to that product. Do not assume the highest score you can see is the one a lender will use.
Step 2: Get and compare all three credit reports
Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the source the CFPB directs consumers to, to obtain reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The CFPB says each major bureau provides one free report every 12 months. Its score explainer also describes an Equifax offer of six additional free reports every 12 months through December 31, 2026; that is a time-limited offer, so check the current official terms before relying on it.
Review the reports side by side rather than comparing only the headline scores. Use a simple checklist:

- Identity: Check your name, variations of your name, current and former addresses, and other identifying information.
- Ownership: Confirm that every loan, card, collection and inquiry belongs to you.
- Balances and limits: Compare reported balances and credit limits with recent statements, remembering that the report may reflect a different statement date.
- Payment history: Look for late-payment marks, dates and severity that do not match your records.
- Status: Verify that paid or closed accounts are shown as closed and that accounts in good standing are not marked delinquent.
- Duplicates: Make sure a debt has not been listed twice under slightly different names.
- Public-record or collection information: Check that any entry is yours and is described accurately.
Requesting your own reports for this review is different from a lender’s credit inquiry. In the mortgage context discussed by the CFPB, checking your own reports does not hurt the score; avoid generalizing that statement to every type of lender inquiry.
Step 3: Dispute a specific error
If an entry is wrong, dispute that item with every credit bureau displaying it and with the business that supplied the information (the “furnisher”), such as a bank or card issuer. The CFPB’s dispute guide recommends a written explanation and copies of supporting records.
Prepare the dispute
- Identify the item precisely. Include the account name and account number, if applicable, and identify the bureau report and page or section where it appears.
- Explain what is wrong and why. State the accurate balance, status, date or ownership information, and describe the conflict with your records.
- Request a correction or removal. Say exactly what you want changed.
- Attach copies, not originals. Include statements, payment confirmations, identity documents or other records that support the claim.
- Keep a complete file. Retain a copy of the letter, attachments and delivery evidence for each bureau and furnisher.
Use each bureau’s current dispute channel and address shown on its report or official website. Send the same evidence to the furnisher, because correcting the source can help it notify the bureaus to which it supplied the data.

What happens after filing
The CFPB guide says furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days; this is a general statutory process description, not a promise that every dispute will be resolved in that time. If a bureau decides a dispute is frivolous or irrelevant, the guide says it must send a notice explaining that decision within five business days of making it.
If the information is found to be wrong or cannot be verified, the furnisher must update or remove it and notify the bureaus to which it supplied the information. If the information is found accurate, you can ask the bureaus to add a statement explaining your dispute to the file. A statement does not erase accurate information, but it lets future report users see your explanation.
Step 4: Act differently if identity theft is possible
An account or inquiry you genuinely do not recognize can indicate identity theft, especially when your personal information is also mixed with another person’s. In that situation, dispute the entry with the bureaus and furnisher, preserve all related correspondence, and use the federal recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov. Do not wait for scores to converge before addressing an account that may be fraudulent.

Step 5: If you plan to borrow soon, start early
Credit-report errors can affect approval decisions and loan terms. Review and correct reports well before submitting an application so there is time for investigations and updates.
For mortgages specifically, the CFPB says most lenders look at all three major bureaus and use the middle score to decide what rate to offer. “Middle” means the score in the center when the three bureau scores are ordered; it is mortgage-specific guidance, not a rule for every lender or loan type. Ask your mortgage lender which models and bureau data it will use, and ask how it handles a corrected report.
How much should you trust a score shown in an app?
A monitoring score can be useful for noticing a trend or a sudden change, but it may not be the score a lender uses. The CFPB reported in 2012 that about one in five consumers in its study would likely receive a meaningfully different score than a lender. The study analyzed 200,000 credit files from each of the three major bureaus and defined “meaningfully different” in terms of potentially different credit offers. That historical result is about consumer-purchased versus creditor-used scores; it is not a current estimate of how often Equifax, Experian and TransUnion scores differ from one another.

In the same study, different scoring models placed consumers in the same credit-quality category 73% to 80% of the time, one category apart 19% to 24% of the time, and two or more categories apart 1% to 3% of the time. Those figures describe the 2012 sample and model comparisons, not today’s general population. The CFPB’s announcement quotes then-Director Richard Cordray: “When consumers buy a credit score, they should be aware that a lender may be using a very different score in making a credit decision.” Read the CFPB study announcement and the full study report for the methodology and limitations.
A practical decision tree
- Scores differ, reports look accurate: Record the model, bureau and date; monitor the reports and ask a lender which score applies. No dispute is necessary solely because the numbers do not match.
- One report has a factual error: Dispute the specific entry with that bureau and the furnisher, attaching copies of evidence.
- Several reports show the same wrong entry: Dispute with every bureau displaying it and with the furnisher so the source can correct its records.
- You see an account or inquiry that may be fraudulent: Treat it as a potential identity-theft issue, begin disputes promptly and use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps.
- A mortgage application is near: Pull all three reports now, resolve errors before applying, and ask the lender which bureau scores and model it will use.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing an educational score with a lender’s product-specific score as if they were the same measurement.
- Disputing a score number instead of identifying the report information that produced it.
- Sending original documents rather than copies and failing to retain a complete dispute file.
- Assuming a furnisher’s correction automatically changes every bureau; verify each report after the investigation.
- Using a 2012 statistic about consumer-purchased and creditor-used scores as a current measure of bureau-to-bureau differences.
- Waiting until the day of a loan application to look for reporting errors.
The practical test is simple: first establish whether the numbers were designed to be comparable; then inspect the underlying reports. If the data is accurate, different scores are an expected result of separate models, sources and dates. If a report contains a factual error, dispute the item—not merely the score—with every affected bureau and the information furnisher.
