If your car EMI is crowding out essentials, do not wait for a missed payment. Map the exact monthly shortfall, check your loan terms, and contact the lender early for written figures and available options. A lower EMI can mean a longer repayment period and a higher total cost, so compare both before agreeing to a change.
The right response depends on whether the pressure is temporary, your rate is fixed or floating, your arrears status, the outstanding balance, the car’s realistic sale value, and how essential the vehicle is for work or family needs.

1. Stabilise the household before changing the loan
Protect housing, food, utilities, healthcare and work-related transport first. Separate those costs from subscriptions, eating out, entertainment and other spending that can pause while you assess the loan. Do not take new high-cost debt simply to keep an unaffordable car payment current; that can turn a short cash-flow problem into several expensive debts.

Record take-home income for every household earner, essential bills, other debt payments, the car EMI and realistic ownership costs such as fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking and taxes. Subtract total monthly outgoings from reliable income. The result is the actual surplus or gap, not an affordability percentage borrowed from a generic rule.

- Write down the amount of the shortfall each month.
- Mark whether the income reduction or expense spike is expected to last weeks, several months or indefinitely.
- Identify cash that is genuinely available without exhausting an emergency reserve needed for essentials.
- List transport alternatives and their dependable monthly cost if the car were unavailable.
This worksheet is a planning aid, not a lender-approved restructuring plan. It gives you the figures needed for a useful conversation with the lender.
Keep paying while you seek information
Unless the lender gives you a written alternative, continue according to the existing agreement. Do not hide the vehicle, stop communicating or assume that a verbal promise changes the contract. If a payment may be missed, tell the lender before the due date and ask what formal arrangements, if any, are available and how they will be recorded.
2. Read the loan documents and latest statement
Before asking for a lower payment, establish what you actually owe. Gather the sanction letter, loan agreement, latest account statement, repayment schedule and any notices about rate resets or overdue amounts.

3. Contact the lender with specific questions
Use the lender’s official customer-service or branch channel and make the request in writing. Ask for a reply that includes a revised amortisation schedule, every fee and the total amount payable under each proposal.
- What is the current outstanding principal and the exact payoff amount as of a stated date?
- Is the rate fixed or floating, what is the current rate, and how is a floating rate reset?
- How many instalments remain and what is the contractual maturity date?
- Can the EMI be reduced by extending the remaining tenure, and what would the new EMI, maturity date, total interest and total repayment be?
- Can the EMI be increased instead, or can a temporary written arrangement be considered if the hardship is short-lived?
- Are partial prepayments allowed? What minimum amount, notice, allocation to principal and charges apply?
- What is the lender’s precise process and payoff figure if the car is sold?
- How would each option affect overdue status, account reporting and any co-borrower or guarantor?
Ask the lender to identify which terms are contractual, which are discretionary and which depend on current regulatory rules. Keep emails, acknowledgement numbers, call summaries and documents in one folder.
4. Know what the RBI reset rules do—and do not—guarantee
The RBI notification titled “Reset of Floating Interest Rate on Equated Monthly Instalments (EMI) based Personal Loans,” issued on August 18, 2023 and updated as of October 1, 2025, applies to regulated entities including scheduled commercial banks, regional rural banks, specified cooperative banks and NBFCs, including housing finance companies. A particular car loan must still be checked against the circular’s scope and the loan agreement; not every vehicle loan is automatically covered in the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor an applicable floating-rate EMI-based personal loan, the lender must communicate the possible effect of benchmark changes and promptly communicate subsequent EMI or tenure changes. At a reset, the borrower is to be offered choices. In the circular’s wording: “The borrowers shall also be given the choice to opt for (i) enhancement in EMI or elongation of tenor or for a combination of both options; and (ii) to prepay, either in part or in full, at any point during the tenor of the loan.” Related charges must be disclosed transparently, and a tenure extension must not create negative amortisation.

These provisions do not create a universal right to a hardship restructure, a payment holiday or a reduced rate. Ask the lender which provision it is applying and obtain the calculation in writing.
5. Compare the available paths on total cost, not EMI alone
Evaluate every proposal against the same six questions: the new monthly outflow, remaining interest and fees, repayment time, consequences of a missed or changed payment, effect on essential cash reserves and whether reliable transport is still needed.
| Path | Monthly effect | Main cost or risk | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce optional spending | Creates room without changing the contract | May not close a large or lasting gap | The shortfall is small and temporary |
| Extend the remaining tenure | Usually lowers the scheduled EMI | More months and generally more total interest, plus any disclosed fees | Income is expected to recover and the revised total remains manageable |
| Increase EMI instead of extending tenure | Raises the monthly payment | Less flexibility now, although the debt may finish sooner | Cash flow can absorb the increase and you want to limit additional interest |
| Refinance or transfer the balance | May lower or change the payment | New interest, processing, transfer, foreclosure and documentation costs can erase savings; a longer new term can cost more overall | The all-in saving is documented and the new maturity is acceptable |
| Partial prepayment | Can reduce principal, EMI, tenure or both, according to the lender’s rules | Uses cash that may be needed for essentials or an emergency buffer; charges and minimums may apply | You have surplus cash after protecting near-term needs |
| Sell the car and settle the loan | Removes the EMI after settlement is completed | Sale proceeds may be below the payoff, leaving a shortfall; transport must be replaced | The vehicle is no longer affordable and reliable alternatives exist |
RBI guidance on loan tenure, interest and fees explains why a lower instalment is not automatically a saving. Principal, interest rate and tenure are the basic drivers of a car EMI; lender product pages, including Federal Bank’s, illustrate those mechanics but do not establish market-wide terms.
6. If a tenure extension is offered
Request two schedules: the current schedule and the proposed schedule. Compare the total remaining payment, total interest, maturity date and every one-time or recurring charge. Check whether the revised payment is still affordable if rates rise, income remains lower for longer or ownership costs increase.

A longer term can be reasonable when the income shock is temporary and the car is essential, but it should be a deliberate purchase of monthly breathing room. Do not describe it as saving money unless the lender’s written totals actually show a lower all-in cost.
7. If you are considering refinancing or partial prepayment
Obtain a dated payoff figure from the existing lender before accepting a new offer. Add the new lender’s interest, processing fee, insurance or documentation requirement, transfer cost and any charge for closing the old account. Compare the combined amount with the existing loan’s remaining total payment.
For partial prepayment, ask whether the money reduces principal immediately and whether you can choose an EMI reduction, a shorter tenure or a combination. Keep enough cash for essential bills and a reasonable emergency buffer; using all available savings to reduce principal can create a new crisis at the next unexpected expense.

8. Check prepayment and foreclosure rules carefully
The Department of Financial Services states that banks cannot charge a foreclosure or prepayment penalty on a floating-rate term loan sanctioned for non-business purposes to an individual borrower, with or without co-obligants. The scope matters: the statement concerns banks, floating-rate term loans and individual borrowers. It does not by itself prohibit every charge on a fixed-rate car loan, every NBFC product or every account. Verify the rate type, lender category, contract and current applicable rule before relying on it.

9. If selling the financed car is the realistic choice
Ask the lender for the exact settlement amount and written sale or lien-release process before advertising or signing a transfer. Obtain realistic offers for the car’s present condition and compare them with the payoff figure.
- If sale proceeds exceed the payoff and transaction costs, confirm how the lender will release its security interest and how the surplus will be paid.
- If proceeds are below the payoff, calculate the shortfall and decide how it would be funded without replacing one unaffordable debt with another.
- Do not hand over a financed vehicle or rely on an informal buyer arrangement before the lender confirms the required documents and payment sequence.
- Include replacement transport, insurance and commuting costs in the household budget after the sale.
The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal right to a hardship sale process or a complete procedure for every lender, so obtain the lender’s instructions in writing and seek independent qualified advice when the shortfall or contract is complex.
10. Escalate unresolved service problems
First file a written complaint with the regulated lender and retain proof of submission, the response and relevant statements. If the entity does not resolve the matter or reply within 30 days, the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme is described by the Department of Financial Services as a cost-free route for eligible complaints involving regulated entities. Check the current scheme eligibility, exclusions and filing process before submitting a case. The ombudsman route addresses service deficiencies; it is not a guaranteed approval for a cheaper EMI.

- Waiting for arrears: early contact preserves more options than a conversation after repeated missed instalments.
- Comparing only the EMI: always obtain total interest, fees and the new end date.
- Assuming every loan is floating-rate: confirm the contract and the lender category.
- Assuming every prepayment fee is prohibited: apply the precise bank, floating-rate, non-business and individual-borrower conditions.
- Using a credit card or informal high-cost loan: this can conceal rather than solve the cash-flow problem.
- Making unsupported credit-score claims: ask the lender how a proposed arrangement or missed payment will be reported; the effect is case-specific.
- Agreeing by phone only: insist on written terms, dates, charges and an amortisation schedule.
12. A practical decision sequence
- Calculate the monthly gap and expected duration using take-home income, essentials, debts and complete car costs.
- Protect essentials and stop discretionary leakage without taking new expensive debt.
- Read the agreement and latest statement; confirm rate type, balance, instalments, fees and arrears.
- Request the payoff figure and written options from the lender.
- Compare each option’s monthly payment, total remaining cost, maturity, cash-reserve effect and transport consequences.
- Choose only after checking the applicable prepayment rule and receiving revised terms in writing.
- If no sustainable option exists, compare a lender-approved sale and settlement with the cost of keeping the car, then escalate unresolved service complaints through the proper route.
The objective is not simply to make this month’s EMI smaller. It is to restore a cash flow that protects essentials, keeps the debt from becoming more expensive than necessary and leaves you with transport you can realistically afford.
