Bond funds commonly decline when market interest rates rise because the prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally move in the opposite direction. Before changing anything, identify the fund’s holdings and interest-rate sensitivity, check whether you need the money soon, and determine whether credit or other risks—not just rates—are driving the loss. There is no universal “sell,” “hold,” or “buy more” answer without knowing the fund and your circumstances.
This is general investor education, not individualized investment, tax or legal advice. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recommends evaluating a fund’s objective, risks, your time horizon and your overall portfolio before making a decision.

Why a bond fund can lose value when rates rise
A bond promises specified interest payments and repayment of its face value at maturity, subject to the issuer’s ability to pay. Suppose an older bond pays a 3% coupon while newly issued bonds offer 4%. Investors generally will not pay as much for the older, lower-income bond, so its market price falls until its expected return is competitive with current rates.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy states: “When market interest rates rise, prices of fixed-rate bonds fall.” A bond fund owns many bonds and values those holdings at current market prices. When those prices decline, the fund’s net asset value (NAV), and therefore your account value, can decline as well. Nearly all bond funds have interest-rate risk; funds holding longer-maturity bonds are generally more sensitive than funds holding shorter-maturity bonds. See the SEC’s explanation in Bond Funds and Income Funds.

The SEC’s numerical example
In a 2013 SEC illustration, a Treasury bond with a 3% coupon, $1,000 face value and 10 years to maturity is priced at $1,000 when the market rate is 3%. One year later, with nine years remaining and market rates at 4%, the example price is $925 and the yield to maturity is 4%. The move from $1,000 to $925 is a hypothetical worked example—not a recent market event, an average loss, a forecast or a promise about any particular fund. What to do first: a practical review sequence
- Save the statement and note the period. Record the fund’s starting and ending NAV, distributions, and the dates involved. A price chart by itself may not show income distributions, which reduce NAV when paid.
- Open the current prospectus and shareholder report. Use the fund company’s official documents, not only the fund name or a marketing summary. Confirm the investment objective, principal strategies, maturity profile, duration, credit quality, concentrations, fees and listed risks.
- Check what actually changed. Compare the latest holdings or portfolio report with the prior one. Look for changes in average maturity, duration, government versus corporate exposure, lower-rated issuers, mortgage-backed securities or other concentrated positions.
- Write down your cash deadline. Identify when you might need some or all of the money, including an emergency reserve, tuition, a home purchase or a planned withdrawal. The same decline can be manageable for a long-term investor and serious for someone who must sell next month.
- Review the fund’s job in your portfolio. Decide whether it is intended to provide income, diversify stock risk, preserve near-term spending money or serve another purpose. Then assess the fund alongside your other assets, not in isolation.
- Only then consider a change. If the fund no longer matches your objective, risk tolerance, liquidity needs or allocation, compare alternatives by their actual risks and structure. A higher headline yield is not automatically a better replacement.

Duration and maturity: estimating rate sensitivity
Maturity is the time until a bond’s principal is scheduled to be repaid. Duration is a measure of how sensitive a bond or bond portfolio’s price is to changes in interest rates. As a general rule, longer maturity and higher duration mean a larger price response to a given rate move, all else equal.

Duration is an estimate, not a guarantee of a particular loss. It can change as the portfolio buys and sells securities, receives principal payments or experiences changes in yields and cash flows. A fund with a short stated maturity can still have meaningful risks if it owns lower-quality debt, floating-rate instruments, derivatives or mortgage-related securities.
Questions to answer in the documents
- What are the portfolio’s average maturity and effective duration?
- How much is invested in government, municipal, corporate, high-yield or securitized debt?
- What is the credit-quality distribution and the largest issuer or sector concentration?
- Does the mandate permit derivatives, leverage, foreign securities or mortgage-backed securities?
- What are the ongoing expense ratio, sales charges or transaction costs, and how do they affect the return you receive?
Do not assume every loss is a rate loss
Interest-rate risk is only one possible explanation. Bond funds also face credit risk: an issuer may be downgraded, miss a payment or default. Lower-rated issuers generally carry greater credit risk. Funds holding mortgage-backed or callable bonds can face prepayment risk, because borrowers may repay early when rates fall, changing the fund’s expected cash flows and reinvestment opportunities.
A fund can therefore fall during a period when rates are stable, or fall by more than a duration-only estimate would suggest. Read the risk section and holdings before attributing the entire decline to central-bank policy or market rates.

Bond fund versus an individual bond
An individual bond held to maturity generally pays its stated interest and face value at maturity, subject to the issuer’s performance. Its market value can still be below what you paid if you sell before maturity. U.S. government backing supports timely payment of interest and principal at maturity for covered obligations; it does not guarantee the bond’s resale price before maturity.

You own shares of a portfolio, not a promise to receive a particular bond’s face value on a particular date. The manager may sell bonds, replace maturing securities and maintain the fund’s mandate. Your NAV fluctuates with the portfolio, and the fund does not promise to return your original purchase price on a scheduled date. The SEC’s bond FAQs explain these distinctions at Bonds — FAQs.
How to compare a possible replacement
Compare the fund you own with any alternative by purpose and risk, not by yield alone. The following checklist keeps the comparison focused:

| Factor | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Interest-rate sensitivity | Duration, average maturity and the shape of the portfolio’s cash flows | Longer duration generally produces larger price movements when rates change. |
| Credit quality | Government, investment-grade, high-yield and unrated exposure; issuer concentration | Lower-quality or concentrated holdings can add default and downgrade risk. |
| Objective and holdings | Income, diversification, preservation of capital or another stated purpose | A fund that does not perform the job you need may be unsuitable even if its yield is attractive. |
| Liquidity and time horizon | When you may need cash and how much price fluctuation you can tolerate | Selling after a decline can turn a temporary market value into a realized loss. |
| Fees | Expense ratio, purchase or redemption charges and trading costs | Costs reduce the return available to you and can differ materially between funds. |
| Portfolio fit | How the holding interacts with stocks, cash and other bonds you own | Two funds may look similar alone but create very different overall concentrations. |
Are short-term and ultra-short bond funds safer when rates rise?
Shorter maturity generally reduces interest-rate sensitivity relative to longer maturity, all else equal. It does not eliminate the possibility of loss. An ultra-short bond fund is still a bond fund and may vary in credit quality and holdings. It can take credit, derivative and mortgage-backed-security risks, and its NAV can decline.
Do not treat an ultra-short fund as interchangeable with a money market fund or a bank certificate of deposit (CD). The SEC discusses these distinctions in Ultra-Short Bond Funds: Know Where You’re Parking Your Money.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCDs and money market funds have different structures
CDs are bank deposits with terms and withdrawal rules. The SEC source notes federal deposit insurance of up to $250,000 for eligible coverage; verify current limits, ownership categories and eligibility with official Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation information before relying on that protection. A CD’s insurance does not make every investment labeled “bond” or “fund” insured.

When selling, holding or changing may make sense
Reasons to avoid an automatic sale
- The decline is consistent with the fund’s disclosed duration and your investment horizon.
- You do not need the money soon and the fund still performs its intended role.
- Selling would create tax consequences or leave your portfolio without the diversification or income the fund was meant to provide; obtain tax advice for your situation.
Reasons to reassess urgently
- You need the money before you can reasonably tolerate the fund’s price volatility.
- The fund’s duration, credit quality or concentrations are materially different from what you intended.
- The holding no longer fits your risk tolerance, income needs or overall allocation.
- The loss appears connected to credit, prepayment or other risks that you did not understand or accept.
If you decide to change the allocation
Set a target allocation before trading, decide whether the change should be gradual or immediate, and document why the new holding meets your objective. Check redemption terms, bid-ask spreads and tax effects. Avoid switching simply because another fund currently displays a higher yield; that yield may compensate for greater duration, credit or liquidity risk.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming a government-bond fund cannot lose money. Government backing concerns timely payment on covered obligations at maturity, not the fund’s daily market price.
- Expecting a fund to mature like one bond. A fund continually manages a portfolio and does not set a date when every shareholder receives face value.
- Using duration as a promise. Duration helps describe rate sensitivity but does not predict the exact result of a complex portfolio.
- Ignoring distributions. Review total return, including income distributions, rather than judging only the NAV line.
- Chasing yield. Higher income can reflect more credit, duration, liquidity or prepayment risk.
- Making a decision without a cash plan. Separate money needed for near-term spending from long-term portfolio assets.
When to get individualized help
Consider consulting a qualified financial professional if the decision depends on facts you cannot evaluate yourself—your goals, time horizon, emergency liquidity, taxes, risk tolerance, income requirements and the interaction among all of your accounts. Bring the current prospectus, shareholder report, account statements and a list of upcoming cash needs. A professional can help assess whether the fund belongs in the allocation, but no adviser can remove the market and credit risks disclosed in the fund documents.
The central question is not whether the fund’s recent value is below your purchase price. It is whether the fund’s current risks and purpose still fit what you need the money to do.
