A falling bank stock price is not the same thing as a bank failure, and it does not by itself cancel federal deposit insurance. If you are worried, do two checks before moving money in haste: confirm that the legal bank holding your deposits is FDIC-insured, then calculate your total balance at that bank by ownership category. The standard protection is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, including accrued interest through the date of a failure.
This is a U.S. consumer guide, not a diagnosis of any particular bank’s solvency. A share-price chart cannot establish whether a bank will fail. Your practical protection depends on the institution, account ownership, combined balances and whether the product is an insured deposit.

Start with the distinction that matters: stock price versus deposit protection
Shares represent an ownership interest in a publicly traded company and can fall for many reasons, including changing expectations about earnings, losses, capital, interest rates or management. A deposit is a claim against a bank for money the bank owes you. Those are different financial interests. A decline in the share price is therefore a warning to investigate your situation, not a published FDIC failure threshold or a finding that your deposits are unsafe.

Its guidance does not identify a stock-price percentage that predicts failure. Treat any conclusion about a particular bank’s condition as requiring current information from that bank and its regulators, rather than a headline alone. The FDIC’s explanation of what happens in a failure is available in When a Bank Fails.

What to do today if the headline has you worried
- Identify the legal institution holding each deposit. Look at your statement, account agreement or online banking disclosures for the bank’s legal name. A familiar brand, app or branch name may not be the legal institution. If you use an intermediary, determine whether you own a deposit at the bank or another type of financial product.
- Verify insurance status. Search the institution in the FDIC’s BankFind Suite. Confirm that the exact bank—not merely a similarly named company—is listed as FDIC-insured.
- List every balance at that bank. Include checking, savings, money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs), along with principal and interest that has accrued. Include accounts at every branch and online division using the same insured bank.
- Sort balances by ownership category. A single-owner account is evaluated with your other single-owner accounts at that bank. Certain joint, trust and retirement categories can qualify for separate limits when their ownership and recordkeeping requirements are met.
- Run the totals through EDIE. The FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) is designed for multiple accounts and ownership structures. It is safer than assuming that each account receives a separate $250,000 limit.
- Decide whether any action is needed. If your eligible deposits are within the applicable limits, a stock-price headline alone does not create an uninsured balance. If you are over a limit, review lawful ways to organize funds across qualifying ownership categories or separate insured banks, while preserving accurate ownership records.
Do not close an account, transfer a large balance or accept an investment product solely because of a social-media post. First establish which money is insured and which is not. If you need a bank-specific assessment, read the institution’s current disclosures and communications from the relevant regulators; no general article can determine a named bank’s present condition.
How the $250,000 FDIC limit works
The standard rule is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The limit applies to the combined eligible deposits you own in that category at that bank, not to each account number. Coverage includes principal and accrued interest through the date the bank fails. The FDIC’s current consumer summaries are in Deposit Insurance at a Glance and Understanding Deposit Insurance.
| Decision axis | How it affects coverage |
|---|---|
| Depositor | Each person’s ownership is evaluated under the applicable category rules. |
| Bank | Deposits at the same insured bank are combined, even when held at different branches or channels. A separate insured bank has a separate limit. |
| Ownership category | Qualifying categories can receive separate coverage, but the category’s legal and recordkeeping requirements must be satisfied. |
| Balance | Principal plus accrued interest counts toward the limit through the failure date. |
| Product type | Eligible deposits may be insured; securities and other investment products are not FDIC-insured deposits. |
Accounts at different branches are not separate insurance buckets
A checking account at one branch and a CD opened online at another branch generally belong to the same insured bank if the legal institution is the same. They are aggregated within the relevant ownership category. Moving money between branches of that bank does not create additional FDIC coverage.

Separate insured banks can have separate limits
Deposits at two different FDIC-insured banks are evaluated separately. You must verify the legal institution in each case; two brands, apps or branches do not necessarily represent two banks. BankFind is the appropriate place to check the institution’s identity and insurance status.

Calculate your exposure accurately
Use principal plus accrued interest
When a balance is near $250,000, include interest that has accrued but has not yet been credited. The FDIC gives an example of a single-owner CD with $195,000 in principal and $3,000 in accrued interest: the $198,000 total is within the stated limit, assuming the account otherwise qualifies. A larger balance can cross the limit even when the principal alone appears below it.
Aggregate by bank and category, not by account label
Make a worksheet with one row for each account and columns for the legal bank, account type, owners, ownership category, principal and accrued interest. Then total rows that share the same bank and category. Do not count a second checking account, a second CD or a different branch as a new limit.
Use EDIE for joint, trust and retirement arrangements
Ownership categories can depend on the names on the account, beneficiary designations, the number of owners or beneficiaries and the bank’s records. EDIE helps model those details. If records are incomplete or a trust, estate or retirement arrangement is unusual, ask the bank how it has coded the account and obtain advice from a qualified professional before relying on a coverage calculation.

- Checking accounts
- Savings accounts
- Money market deposit accounts
- Certificates of deposit
The name “money market” is important: a money market deposit account is a bank deposit, while a money market mutual fund is an investment product. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds and annuities are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance, even if you purchased them through a bank-affiliated brokerage or saw them displayed alongside your bank accounts. Ask for the product’s legal description and the entity holding it.
Insurance is automatic, but only for eligible deposits
You do not buy FDIC insurance separately. The FDIC states that insurance is automatic for an eligible deposit account opened at an FDIC-insured bank; see its Deposit Insurance FAQs. Automatic coverage does not mean every financial product sold in a bank building is a deposit, nor does it remove the $250,000 limit or the category rules.
Check the bank’s account disclosures for the ownership title and deposit type. If the account is held through a broker, fintech or other intermediary, ask whether you have a deposit at a named insured bank, how balances are recorded and whether the intermediary’s records identify each beneficial owner. Coverage can depend on those records.
What happens if an insured bank actually fails?
A bank failure is a formal regulatory event, not simply a large share-price decline. The FDIC generally uses one of two approaches:

A healthy bank assumes the deposits
The FDIC may arrange for another bank to assume the failed bank’s deposits. In that case, customers are usually given instructions about the continuing account relationship, checks, cards and online access. Follow the acquiring bank’s notices and keep statements showing your balances and ownership.
The FDIC pays insured balances directly
If no acquiring bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC can pay depositors directly up to their insured amounts. The FDIC says insured payments historically are usually made within a few days and often by the next business day. Accounts requiring documentation or a coverage determination can take longer. Keep identification, account statements, signature cards, trust documents and beneficiary records available so ownership can be established.
The FDIC describes these procedures in Payment to Depositors. Do not assume that a delay in receiving funds means the money is lost; it may mean the FDIC is resolving records or determining coverage.
What happens to money above the insurance limit?
The portion of an eligible deposit above the applicable limit is uninsured. It becomes a claim against the failed bank’s receivership. Recoveries can take time and are not guaranteed to equal the entire uninsured amount. The result depends on the receivership’s assets, liabilities and distributions, so an uninsured balance should not be treated as immediately available cash.

This is why the relevant calculation is the aggregate balance by bank and ownership category before a failure occurs. Merely opening several accounts at the same bank does not create several $250,000 limits. If you have an excess balance, document your ownership and consider whether funds can be placed at another insured bank or in a qualifying category without creating tax, liquidity or recordkeeping problems.
Common mistakes after a stock-price scare
- Confusing the bank’s shares with your deposit. A shareholder can lose value while an eligible depositor remains within FDIC limits; the two positions have different protections.
- Counting branches as separate banks. Branch location does not change the insured institution.
- Counting accounts instead of categories. Several single-owner accounts at one bank are generally added together.
- Ignoring accrued interest. Interest can push a near-limit balance over the limit.
- Assuming every bank-sold product is insured. Securities, mutual funds and annuities are not FDIC-insured deposits.
- Relying on a brand name or app. Verify the legal bank in BankFind and read the account’s disclosures.
- Moving money without records. A hurried transfer can create tax, fraud, liquidity or ownership problems. Preserve statements and confirmation numbers for any legitimate change.
A practical decision framework
If every eligible deposit is within the limit
Save your BankFind result, account disclosures and current statements. Continue monitoring official communications, but do not treat a stock chart as a forecast of failure. Recheck balances as interest accrues or when you open another account.
If a category is over the limit
Use EDIE to confirm the calculation. Check whether another ownership category genuinely applies and whether the bank’s records support it. If not, evaluate a transfer to a different insured bank or another suitable cash arrangement, considering access needs, fees, taxes and documentation.
If you cannot determine what you own
Ask the bank or intermediary, in writing, for the legal institution, product type, ownership registration and how the balance is reported for FDIC purposes. Do not rely on marketing language such as “cash sweep” or “money market” without the underlying account description.
If the bank is formally closed
Follow the FDIC or acquiring bank’s instructions, keep every statement and contact the FDIC through the channels listed in its failure notices. Be prepared to provide documents for accounts with trusts, estates, beneficiaries or other ownership features.
Keep the checks current
FDIC coverage is tied to the facts of your accounts, and those facts can change when you add a joint owner, retitle an account, name beneficiaries, renew a CD or move funds through an intermediary. Review your balances and ownership records after major changes and use the FDIC’s current tools and guidance rather than an old calculation. This article reflects U.S. FDIC guidance accessed in October 2026; institution status, account terms and regulatory communications should be verified for your specific situation.
