What to Do if Your Bank Did Not Apply an Eligible Loan Interest Concession (India, 2026)

If your bank appears to have missed a loan-interest concession, first prove what document or official scheme creates the entitlement, then reconcile the loan account, complain to the bank in writing, and preserve the dates needed for escalation. Eligibility by itself does not establish that a particular amount is legally due: the concession may depend on an application, enrollment, renewal, proof, payment history, a start date, or an expiry condition.

This procedure is for borrowers in India. The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 applies to covered regulated entities and took effect on 1 July 2026. A different country, lender, or government program can have different rules, deadlines and remedies.

1. Identify the promise that should have produced the concession

Begin with the document or rule that supposedly gives you the lower rate, interest credit, subsidy, waiver or installment adjustment. Possible sources include:

  • the signed sanction or offer letter;
  • the executed loan agreement and its schedules;
  • a lender promotion or written policy;
  • a government-supported scheme and its published rules; or
  • a later written variation accepted by you and the bank.

RBI borrower guidance says lenders should disclose applicable interest and charges and that borrowers can request authenticated loan documents. Obtain the written offer and keep a complete copy, including schedules and annexures. A verbal assurance, an advertisement without applicable terms, or a general statement that you are “eligible” may not establish the rate, amount or duration you are claiming.

Record the operative terms

Create a short chronology while reading the documents. Write down:

  • the precise qualifying status (for example, a category, event or account condition);
  • whether you had to apply, enroll, renew or submit proof;
  • the submission method and deadline;
  • the date the concession was to begin;
  • how it changes the interest rate, spread, credited interest, principal or installments;
  • the promised duration, review date and expiry; and
  • any exclusions, minimum payment requirement or “subject to approval” language.

The specific scheme is not identified by the title, so do not assume that an unrelated relief program or a previous promotion governs your loan.

2. Prove that every condition was met

Collect evidence in date order. Keep the original files and a working copy for calculations. Useful records include:

  • proof of the qualifying status;
  • the completed application or enrollment confirmation;
  • upload receipts, emails, branch acknowledgments and call references;
  • documents submitted to satisfy a renewal or verification request;
  • payment history showing any required on-time installments; and
  • notices in which the bank accepted, rejected or queried your request.

Mark the date on which the concession should have started and the first statement on which it is absent. If the bank says a document was missing, ask when it requested that document and where the applicable rule makes it a condition. A lender cannot fairly rely on an undisclosed condition, but you need the written terms to demonstrate that point.

3. Audit the loan account, not just the EMI

An unchanged or increased EMI does not by itself prove that a concession was omitted. A rate reset can change the EMI, the tenure or both. Obtain dated statements, the principal balance, rate history, installment schedule and any entries described as a subsidy, rebate, credit or adjustment.

Perform a line-by-line comparison

  1. Take the rate and balance immediately before the alleged effective date.
  2. Check the rate, spread or credit shown from that date onward.
  3. Compare interest debits and principal reductions with the contractual schedule.
  4. Identify the first period in which the concession should have changed the calculation.
  5. Estimate the difference for each affected period and label it as an estimate until the bank supplies an itemized recalculation.

Ask the bank to explain the effective date, rate or index, spread, balance used, interest basis and every adjustment in writing. Request an updated statement and amortization schedule rather than relying on a telephone explanation.

4. Separate a missing concession from other explanations

The same symptom—an unexpectedly high interest charge—can have different causes. Use the comparisons below before alleging a service failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Possible explanation What to compare What to ask the bank
Documented concession was not applied Offer or agreement, concession rule, eligibility proof, effective date and account entries Which term or condition did the bank apply, and from what date?
Application or documentation condition was not met Scheme instructions, submission receipt, application date and bank notices What exact step or document is missing, and when was it requested?
Concession was discretionary or expired Promotional wording, approval language, renewal and expiry terms Is the offer guaranteed or discretionary, and which term supports that position?
Separate interest-calculation error Disbursement and repayment dates, daily or monthly basis, statements and debits Provide a dated, itemized recalculation and identify the rate and balance used.
Floating benchmark or spread reset Benchmark or index, spread, reset date, rate-change notice and amortization schedule Was this a benchmark reset or the missing concession? Show both calculations.

5. Check for unfair charging practices that are separate from the concession

RBI’s 29 April 2024 Fair Practices Code for Lenders – Charging of Interest circular records practices found in supervisory examinations, including charging from sanction or agreement execution instead of actual disbursement, charging a full month when a loan was disbursed or repaid partway through it, and collecting installments in advance while calculating interest on the full loan amount. The circular says such non-standard practices are “not in consonance with the spirit of fairness and transparency while dealing with customers.”

These examples may reveal a calculation problem in your account, but they do not create a concession entitlement. You still need the applicable promise or rule, proof of eligibility and a calculation showing the amount affected. Ask the lender to review the account and correct any error through a system or statement adjustment where appropriate.

6. Send a complete written complaint to the bank

Use the bank’s official complaint channel—such as its branch, website or designated email—and keep proof of delivery. Include:

  • your name, loan and account identifiers, and contact details;
  • the concession document or scheme relied on;
  • the facts proving eligibility and any application, renewal or submission dates;
  • the date the concession should have started;
  • the statement entries, rate history and your calculation of the missing adjustment;
  • copies of supporting records, clearly named and dated; and
  • the precise correction requested.

Ask the bank to confirm receipt and issue a complaint or service-request number. Request a written response that states the condition it says was not met, the rule or clause supporting that conclusion, the effective date used, and an itemized recalculation.

State a proportionate remedy

Ask the bank to apply the supported concession from the evidenced effective date, correct the interest and principal calculation, credit or refund documented excess, and issue an updated statement or amortization schedule. If the bank disputes your calculation, ask it to provide its own dated schedule so the difference can be tested rather than argued in general terms.

7. Escalate inside the bank

If the first response is absent or unsatisfactory, follow the lender’s published grievance ladder. Send the complaint and all attachments to the designated grievance or nodal officer, identify the earlier reference number, and state what remains unresolved. Preserve every response, date and delivery record. Procedures differ by lender.

For public-sector banks, the Department of Financial Services describes a branch, zone and head-office complaint path and advises customers to approach the responsible organization first. Its CPGRAMS overview states a maximum 21-day resolution timeline for that government grievance channel and an appeal mechanism for its own process. CPGRAMS is separate from the RBI Ombudsman route and does not replace the RBI filing deadlines.

8. India’s RBI Ombudsman route in 2026

The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 replaced the 2021 scheme for new complaints on 1 July 2026. It is a free alternate grievance process for customers of covered regulated entities, not a guarantee that every concession dispute will be accepted or decided for the borrower.

When you can file

The RBI’s official FAQ states: A complaint can be filed before the RBI Ombudsman if the complainant has not received any reply within 30 days or within the time specified by RBI, NPCI or Card Network guidelines, if any, whichever is higher, after the Regulated Entity received the complaint; or if the complainant is not satisfied with the reply/resolution provided by the Regulated Entity. This wording applies in the context of the India 2026 Scheme.

Generally, wait until the bank has replied unsatisfactorily or 30 days have passed after it received your complaint. A longer period can apply where RBI, NPCI or a card-network guideline specifies one. File within 90 days of the applicable response period expiring or the regulated entity’s last communication, whichever is later. Your original complaint to the lender must also have been made within the limitation period under the Limitation Act.

Confirm coverage and maintainability

Coverage is not universal across every RBI-regulated entity or every financial complaint. Check the Scheme’s covered-entity list and non-maintainability rules. Complaints may be excluded when they concern a lender’s commercial judgment, are already pending or decided in specified judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings, fall outside RBI’s regulatory scope, or require extensive evidence unsuitable for the process. A request that the bank voluntarily offer a cheaper rate is different from a documented concession that the bank failed to implement.

File through an official channel

The RBI FAQ lists these filing routes:

  1. Online through the Complaint Management System at https://cms.rbi.org.in.
  2. By email to [email protected].
  3. By signed physical submission to the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre, RBI, Central Vista, Sector 17, Chandigarh – 160017.

The assistance and status contact centre is 14448; it does not accept complaints directly. Do not pay an intermediary simply to submit an eligible complaint.

Attach a decision-ready record

Include the bank complaint number and date, a copy of the complaint, the loan details, a concise chronology, the loss or inconvenience, the exact relief sought, the bank’s reply if any, and the relevant statements, terms and proof of eligibility. Keep the originals and note the RBI complaint number so you can track the matter.

9. Understand possible compensation and limits

Under the 2026 Scheme, compensation for consequential loss can be up to ₹30 lakh, subject to the Scheme’s terms. Compensation for loss of time, expenses, harassment or mental anguish can be up to ₹3 lakh. These are ceilings, not expected awards. The Ombudsman may facilitate a settlement or issue an award only where the complaint is maintainable and deficiency in service is established; no particular result is guaranteed.

10. Avoid mistakes that weaken the complaint

  • Relying on eligibility alone: attach the rule, effective date and proof of every condition.
  • Complaining only about the EMI: provide statements, rate history, balance and an itemized calculation.
  • Confusing a floating-rate reset with a concession: compare the benchmark, spread and reset notice separately.
  • Filing with RBI too early: first obtain an unsatisfactory reply or allow the applicable response period to expire.
  • Missing the 90-day window: calculate it from the applicable period’s expiry or the last lender communication, whichever is later.
  • Sending an unsupported demand: request a correction tied to a documented term, not an arbitrary new price.
  • Losing the paper trail: retain delivery proof, complaint numbers, statements and every response.

11. A practical file checklist

Before escalating, assemble one folder containing:

  • sanction letter, offer letter, agreement and concession rules;
  • eligibility, application, renewal and submission proof;
  • all statements covering the disputed period;
  • rate, benchmark, spread and reset notices;
  • your dated calculation and the remedy requested;
  • bank complaint, acknowledgment and replies; and
  • proof of delivery and the dates used for the RBI deadline.

Number the files and refer to those numbers in your complaint. A clear chronology lets the bank or Ombudsman test one disputed date or calculation instead of reconstructing the entire loan history.

Bottom line for an Indian borrower

Document the concession, prove each condition, reconcile the actual loan ledger, and demand a written recalculation from the bank. Escalate through the lender’s grievance ladder, then use the free RBI Ombudsman process only after the bank has been approached and the 2026 timing and coverage rules are satisfied. Ask for the specific rate, credit, refund and corrected statement supported by your records; treat compensation limits as statutory ceilings, not promises.
