If several GST notices arrive, or one contains an obvious mistake, do not ignore any of them and do not assume that one reply covers the rest. Download every notice and attachment from the GST Portal, verify its reference and issuer, compare the periods and legal provisions, and file a separate, complete response within each live deadline. Ask the proper officer in writing to clarify apparent duplication. If a final order has already been issued, assess appeal timing immediately; a rectification request does not automatically extend the appeal period.
This is India-focused procedural information current to 13 October 2026. GST treatment depends on the notice type, issuing authority, tax period, jurisdiction and case facts. Use the current portal record and obtain qualified advice for a disputed, high-value or deadline-sensitive matter.

Start by preserving and verifying every communication
Keep the complete notice, every attachment, the email or physical envelope, delivery details and the GST Portal record. A forwarded PDF or email alone is not a reliable case file. Save files with the notice number and date so that later submissions can be matched to the correct proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Download each item separately. Save the notice, annexures, portal acknowledgement, delivery evidence and any subsequent order.
- Read the identifying fields. Record the document or reference number, date issued, date received, issuing office and officer, GSTIN, tax period, cited section or rule, allegations, amount, requested action and deadline.
- Check the portal case record. Look for the corresponding notice, reply option, order and case status. Do not rely solely on an email, messaging alert or a copy supplied by someone else.
- Authenticate suspicious documents. Depending on the platform and communication type, official DGGI and related GST communications may be checked through a Document Identification Number (DIN), eOffice Issue Number or GSTN Reference Number (RFN). Use the verification route applicable to the document before disclosing information or paying money.
A genuine notice can still be wrong on its facts. Verification confirms the communication, not the correctness of the allegation.

Make a one-row-per-notice comparison
Similarity of wording does not prove that two notices are legally identical. Different tax periods, authorities, provisions or procedural stages can create separate proceedings even when the alleged mismatch looks the same. Build a comparison before drafting replies.
| Comparison field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Reference | Notice number, DIN, RFN or other portal case identifier |
| Dates | Date issued, date received and stated reply deadline |
| Authority | Issuing office, officer, jurisdiction and whether the communication is from a central or state authority |
| Taxpayer details | GSTIN and legal name shown on the document |
| Period | Financial year, month or other tax period covered |
| Legal basis | Section, rule, notification or return form cited |
| Issue and amount | Alleged conduct or mismatch, tax, interest and penalty amounts, and calculations |
| Evidence requested | Returns, invoices, ledgers, e-way bills, payment proofs, reconciliations or explanations sought |
| Stage and status | Intimation, show-cause notice, reply stage, order, recovery action and portal status |
| Available route | Portal reply, rectification request or appeal, as applicable |
Keep the table with your working papers. If two authorities appear to be pursuing the same issue, preserve both records and ask each relevant authority for written clarification. The official material does not establish a universal rule requiring consolidation or withdrawal, so do not treat one authority’s silence as closure of the other proceeding.
Identify the procedural stage before choosing a remedy
Intimation or show-cause notice
A notice asking why tax, interest or penalty should not be demanded is not a final order. Read the full allegations and annexures, not just a portal summary. The GST forms reference describes DRC-01 as the summary of a show-cause notice and DRC-06 as the taxpayer’s reply. Confirm the current case-specific workflow shown in the portal and in the notice itself.

Reply to each live notice
Use the exact notice reference in the subject line and opening paragraph. State the factual or legal error, answer every allegation in the same order as the notice, and attach records that allow the officer to test your explanation. Useful evidence may include filed returns, invoices, credit or debit notes, payment challans, books, reconciliations, contracts and earlier correspondence. If another notice concerns the same transaction, identify it by number, explain the overlap and request written directions on how the matters will proceed. Submit through the prescribed portal route and retain the acknowledgement, submission timestamp and uploaded files.

Order stage
DRC-07 is described in the forms reference as the summary of an order. An order changes the immediate task: you must consider payment, rectification or appeal rather than treating the matter as an unanswered notice. The portal appeal application is APL-01; an order must exist before that application can be filed. Check the live portal requirements for the particular order.
How to answer apparently duplicate notices
- File within every stated deadline. Unless a notice is formally withdrawn or the proceeding is otherwise concluded, protect each deadline. The sources do not say that filing one reply automatically answers another notice.
- Cross-reference precisely. In each relevant reply, list the other notice numbers, authorities, periods and amounts. Explain which facts and documents overlap and which do not.
- Separate the arguments. Answer the allegations in the notice before making the duplication point. A procedural objection should not leave the substantive questions unanswered.
- Request a written clarification. Ask the proper officer to confirm whether the proceedings concern the same tax period and issue, whether a response may be adopted across files, and what further filing is required. Keep the request and proof of delivery.
- Monitor both case records. Check for replies, hearing notices, orders or recovery steps under every reference until an official record shows that a proceeding has ended.
For example, two communications may both mention an input-tax-credit mismatch but cover different months or cite different provisions. Treat them as separate until the records establish otherwise.
Correct an apparent error through section 161 when it fits
Section 161 of the CGST Act addresses an error apparent on the face of the record in a decision, order, notice, certificate or other document. It is intended for an evident mistake, not a full re-argument of disputed evidence or law. Whether an error meets that standard is fact-specific.
- The affected person ordinarily brings the error to the authority’s attention within three months from issue.
- Rectification ordinarily cannot be made after six months from issue.
- The six-month limit does not apply to a purely clerical or arithmetical correction caused by an accidental slip or omission.
- If the proposed correction adversely affects a person, the authority must follow natural-justice requirements, including an opportunity to be heard where applicable.
Describe the exact field, calculation or statement that is wrong, show the correct record, and attach the document proving it. A request to correct an obvious GSTIN digit or arithmetic addition is different from asking the officer to reconsider a contested classification. Do not assume that filing rectification pauses or extends an appeal deadline; the cited official material does not establish such an extension.

Do not rely on a minor defect as your only defence
Section 160 says that a mistake, defect or omission does not by itself invalidate a proceeding when it is substantively in conformity with the Act and its requirements. It also restricts certain service objections, including circumstances in which the communication has already been acted upon or service was not challenged earlier. A misspelling, formatting problem or small address error may therefore be insufficient on its own.
Explain the substantive prejudice: the wrong tax period, incorrect GSTIN, missing computation, impossible compliance date, wrong legal provision or failure to supply material relied upon. Preserve the defect in your written reply and obtain legal advice before making service or jurisdiction the sole strategy.
If a final order has been issued, check appeal timing immediately
The GST Portal FAQ states that an aggrieved taxpayer or unregistered person may appeal an adjudicating authority’s order within three months from communication. It also states that the appellate authority may condone up to one additional month when sufficient cause prevented timely filing. Do not wait for a rectification decision before checking this limitation period.

| Appeal requirement described in the portal FAQ | Practical action |
|---|---|
| Time to appeal | Prepare and file within three months from communication of the order. |
| Possible condonation | If sufficient cause prevented timely filing, seek condonation for up to one additional month; it is not automatic. |
| Pre-deposit | The FAQ describes a minimum pre-deposit of 10% of disputed tax. Confirm the amount and current law for the order. |
| Order not uploaded | Where the order is not uploaded, submit a self-certified copy within seven days in the situation described by the FAQ. The filing date may otherwise be treated as the date that copy is submitted. |
These figures come from the portal FAQ and must be checked against the current statute, rules and portal instructions for your case. An appeal addresses the merits of an order; rectification is narrower and cannot safely be used as a substitute for appeal.

Prepare a complete evidence file
Organize documents by notice reference and tax period. A practical index includes:
- the notice, annexures, envelope or electronic service record and portal acknowledgement;
- returns, annual return extracts and electronic liability or credit ledgers for the relevant period;
- invoice registers, sample invoices, credit or debit notes and e-way bills where relevant;
- bank statements, challans and payment reconciliations;
- working papers that bridge the department’s figure to your books;
- earlier replies, hearing submissions and correspondence with the officer; and
- a chronology showing every filing, hearing, order and follow-up.
Name files clearly, keep the original formats where possible and retain a local backup. Before submission, open each uploaded file and verify that it is legible, complete and attached to the intended case.
Common failure modes and safer responses
Ignoring a notice because another one looks the same
Similarity is not a legal resolution. Compare the identifiers and file a response for each live proceeding.
Replying only to the summary
DRC-01 is a summary of a show-cause notice. Read and answer the full notice and attachments.

- Helpful in various ways
Submitting a generic denial
Match each allegation with a fact, calculation and supporting document. Explain variances instead of uploading an unindexed document bundle.
Waiting for clarification until the deadline passes
Ask for clarification promptly, but submit a protective, complete reply by the stated date unless the authority formally grants more time.
Assuming a portal upload succeeded
Save the acknowledgement, transaction number and timestamp, then confirm that the case status reflects the filing.

Assess appeal limitation as soon as an order is communicated. A rectification request does not, on the available official material, extend that period.
When to obtain professional help
Promptly consult a qualified GST practitioner or tax lawyer when notices involve substantial tax or penalty, multiple authorities or years, a proposed adverse order, recovery, suspected fraud, disputed classification, personal liability or a deadline that is close. Give the adviser the comparison table, complete notices, portal history and chronology rather than a single forwarded PDF. Verify the adviser’s qualifications and the scope of any engagement independently.
The official material does not settle the legal effect of every situation in which two authorities pursue the same issue, nor does it determine when proceedings must be consolidated or withdrawn. Those questions require the actual documents, jurisdiction-specific analysis and, where necessary, representation before the authority or appellate forum.
