A SIP date in your calendar does not prove that your bank was debited, that an order was placed, or that the order is still pending. Check the bank statement and the records held by your investment platform, asset-management company (AMC), or registrar. Then confirm whether the SIP registration is still active before taking any further action.
Do not assume the missed amount will be collected automatically next month, and do not treat a second purchase as a backdated replacement. A separate investment is a new transaction with its own cut-off time, minimum amount, mandate and scheme rules. The correct response depends on whether the installment failed, is pending, was never presented, or caused the SIP to be cancelled.

What a missed SIP installment can mean
A systematic investment plan (SIP) is a standing instruction to invest a stated amount at a chosen frequency. The basic concept is described by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) at its mutual-fund overview. When an expected installment does not appear, there are several materially different possibilities:
- Failed debit: the bank or payment system attempted the collection and returned it.
- Pending: the debit or order is still being processed, so a second payment could create duplication.
- Not presented: the mandate was inactive, not registered correctly, or not sent for collection on that date.
- Processed but not yet displayed: the bank and investment account may update at different times.
- Cancelled SIP: repeated failures or an explicit cancellation may have ended the registration.
Those labels are not interchangeable. Your next step should follow the status shown by the bank and the entity that registered the SIP.

Step 1: Check the bank, platform and AMC records
- Review the bank account for the scheduled date. Look for a debit, a reversal, a return entry, or a charge connected with a failed mandate. Keep the transaction reference and date.
- Open the SIP or mandate screen in your investment app. Look for terms such as processed, failed, pending, skipped, inactive or cancelled. Save a screenshot if the status may change.
- Check the AMC or registrar account. A platform display can lag the order system. If the SIP was registered directly with an AMC, through a registrar, an exchange or a bank, use that channel’s records as well.
- Match the amount, date and folio or order number. An apparently missing installment may belong to another folio, bank account or SIP registration.
Platform guidance from Zerodha identifies insufficient opening balance as one reason a scheduled Coin SIP debit may fail; its troubleshooting page is at this support article. The example is platform-specific, so it should not be treated as the only possible cause.
If the debit failed
Identify the failure reason
Common explanations include insufficient balance at presentation, an expired or inactive mandate, a bank-account mismatch, a blocked debit instruction, a technical or clearing problem, or an account restriction. Ask the actual registration channel which reason code it received. “Insufficient funds” calls for a different fix from “mandate not found.”
Check for a bank return fee
A bank may charge for a returned mandate transaction. There is no single industry-wide amount established for every bank or account. Inspect the statement and the tariff or account terms that apply to your account. Zerodha’s mandate guidance explains that mandate handling involves both the platform and the bank; see the mandate article. Do not assume that a fee was or was not charged until the statement confirms it.

Find out whether later installments remain active
One failed debit does not establish a universal rule that the SIP either continues or stops. Check the next scheduled dates in the platform, AMC or registrar system. If another debit is due soon, contact that registration channel promptly and ask whether a correction, pause or new mandate is required.
Will the missed installment be collected automatically?
Do not rely on an automatic catch-up. Official SIP material describes periodic investing through standing instructions, but it does not establish one universal process that invests a missed installment later at the original date’s price or terms. A later debit, if one occurs, may simply be the next scheduled installment.
If you want to invest the amount separately, ask whether the scheme and channel accept a one-time purchase and what minimum amount, cut-off time, payment method and applicable transaction rules apply. Record it as a fresh purchase. It is not a backdated SIP installment, and it should not be described as restoring the missed date.

Why paying double next month can be misleading
Adding extra money to the next scheduled debit may not be supported by the mandate. The system could collect only the registered SIP amount, reject the altered amount, or treat an extra payment as a separate purchase. Ask the provider what transaction it will create before sending additional money; do not assume that a larger payment will repair the missed installment.

Cancellation thresholds vary by AMC, scheme document, frequency and sometimes registration channel. Some official terms describe cancellation only after repeated failed debits, while others may have different conditions or notification procedures.

If you have had several failed debits, search your email, SMS and account notices for cancellation or mandate-expiry messages. Ask what fresh registration, bank verification or e-mandate is needed before expecting future automatic collections. A cancelled SIP is not necessarily restarted merely by adding money to the account.

What if another debit is about to happen?
Contact the entity that actually registered the instruction: the AMC, registrar, investment platform, exchange channel or bank, as applicable. Ask three precise questions:
- Is the current mandate active and scheduled for presentation?
- Can it be paused or corrected, and what lead time applies?
- Will a request made now affect a debit already presented to the bank?
Do not assume that a pause request submitted after a failed debit will prevent the next collection. Processing cut-offs differ. The AMFI-hosted Old Bridge Mutual Fund material gives one example of a six-month pause for eligible monthly SIPs, with an application at least 10 calendar days before the next installment; it also excludes some channel or platform registrations. Those conditions appear in the Old Bridge material and must not be generalized to other AMCs.
Restarting a cancelled or inactive SIP
- Confirm the old status in writing or in the account record. Establish whether it is failed, inactive, expired or cancelled.
- Resolve the underlying cause. Correct the bank account, maintain the required balance at presentation, renew the mandate or complete any requested verification.
- Ask whether the old mandate can be reactivated. Some channels require a fresh registration rather than a simple restart.
- Check the first new debit date. Mandate approval and bank clearing can take time; the first date shown in an app may not be the first date on which collection is possible.
- Verify the amount, frequency and folio. A new SIP registration may have different minimums or terms from the previous one.
Keep confirmation numbers and the provider’s response. If the platform and AMC show different statuses, ask which record is authoritative for the order and mandate.

How the registration channel changes the answer

Use the route that created the instruction for pause, correction and restart questions. A support answer for one platform or bank cannot safely be applied to every SIP.
What not to do
- Do not make a second payment while the first is pending. Wait for a confirmed status or ask the provider whether duplication is possible.
- Do not assume the next month will contain two deductions. A missed installment is not universally carried forward.
- Do not assume three failures always cancel the SIP. Thresholds vary, as the Helios and NJ examples demonstrate.
- Do not quote or rely on a fixed failed-debit penalty. Check the bank’s own terms and statement.
- Do not treat a pause as retroactive. A request may require advance notice and may not stop a debit already submitted.
- Do not change the mandate amount casually. An extra contribution may become a separate purchase with different processing rules.
A concise decision checklist
- Record the scheduled date, amount, folio and mandate reference.
- Check the bank statement and the investment account for debit, reversal, pending or failure status.
- Ask the registration channel for the exact reason code.
- Check whether the next SIP dates are still active.
- Review the bank tariff for any return charge.
- If another debit is imminent, request a pause or correction using the provider’s required lead time.
- If the SIP was cancelled, complete the required fresh mandate or registration.
- If you invest separately, document it as a new purchase and verify its minimum, cut-off and scheme rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I invest twice next month to make up the missed SIP?
Not automatically. A mandate may collect only its registered amount, and any extra payment may be processed as a separate purchase. Confirm the transaction type and scheme rules with the registration channel first.
Is a SIP cancelled after one missed installment?
There is no universal answer. Cancellation conditions depend on the AMC, scheme terms, frequency and sometimes the registration channel. Check your current scheme documents and account notices.
Can a pause request stop a debit that already failed?
Not necessarily. Pause facilities may require advance notice, and a request submitted after presentation may not affect that debit or the next one.
