What to Do If You Miss a GST Return Due Date

First identify which country’s GST authority and which accounting period are involved. Then file the overdue return through that authority’s accepted channel, even if the return is nil where local rules require one, calculate the tax due, and pay it promptly. If you cannot pay in full, contact the authority about the balance and payment options; do not wait to file while arranging payment.

GST deadlines, penalties, extension rules and enforcement differ sharply between New Zealand, Singapore and Canada. The procedures below are jurisdiction-specific examples, not one universal GST rule.

Do these things first

  1. Confirm the jurisdiction and period. Find the tax authority named on your GST registration and the taxable or accounting period that was missed. Your filing frequency, accounting basis and local calendar determine the actual deadline.
  2. Check whether a nil return is required. In New Zealand and Singapore, GST-registered businesses must file for every required period even when there was no activity. A period with no sales does not automatically remove the filing obligation.
  3. Submit the return immediately. Use the authority’s online account, compatible accounting software or other accepted channel. Keep the electronic acknowledgement or other proof of submission.
  4. Calculate the amount payable and pay it. Filing and payment are separate obligations. Pay the correct GST as soon as practicable, using the payment instructions in the authority account.
  5. Contact the authority if you cannot pay in full. Explain the situation and ask about available payment arrangements or other assistance. A payment discussion does not replace filing the return.
  6. Check your account after filing. Look for an assessment, late-filing notice, interest charge, payment posting and any older outstanding periods. Save payment confirmations and copies of every submitted return.

Submitting a late return does not automatically cancel penalties or interest. Depending on the country and circumstances, the authority may charge a filing penalty, add interest, estimate the tax, begin recovery action or take further enforcement steps.

Why the country matters

“GST” is used in several tax systems, but the same phrase can hide different rules. A deadline that is correct in one country may be wrong in another. Before relying on a date or penalty, establish:

New Zealand: overdue GST return

Deadline and nil-return requirement

Inland Revenue generally requires a GST return by the 28th day of the month after the taxable period ends. Two stated exceptions are a period ending on 31 March, due on 7 May, and a period ending on 30 November, due on 15 January. Payment is due on the same day as the return.

A GST return is required for every taxable period, including a nil return. Inland Revenue states: “You cannot get an extension of time to file a GST return so you must file it on time.” Once the date has passed, do not assume that requesting extra time will stop the filing obligation.

What to file and how to file it

Prepare the return for the missed period, including output tax, deductible input tax and the resulting refund or amount payable. Inland Revenue lists myIR, compatible accounting software and paper returns as filing routes. Use the route available for your registration and retain the submission confirmation.

Late filing, default assessment and recovery

Inland Revenue’s instruction for an overdue return is direct: “You need to file your overdue return as soon as possible and pay any tax you owe.” Late-filing and late-payment penalties may apply. If the return remains unfiled, Inland Revenue may make a default assessment. Its guidance describes recovery of the default assessment, penalties and interest on overdue amounts when it does not hear from the taxpayer, and possible court action.

A default assessment is not a substitute for correcting your records. File the actual return promptly so the authority can replace or reconcile its estimate with the information for the period. If a notice has already arrived, follow the notice instructions while submitting the missing return.

Singapore: GST F5 or F8 return

Normal due date and nil returns

IRAS generally requires a GST return and payment one month after the accounting period ends. A nil return is still required when there was no business activity during the period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extensions must be requested before the deadline

An extension request must be made at least five working days before the filing due date and include the required supporting documents. IRAS says a request submitted late or after the due date will not be processed. If an extension has not been approved before the due date, late-filing penalties apply. After missing the date, proceed with filing rather than treating an extension request as a substitute for the return.

Late-submission penalty and continuing non-filing

IRAS describes an immediate SGD 200 late-submission penalty when the GST return is not filed by its due date. It describes a further SGD 200 for each completed month that the return remains outstanding, capped at SGD 10,000 for each outstanding return. These are administrative figures in current IRAS guidance; check the authority account for the amount assessed in your case.

IRAS may issue an estimated assessment. Its guidance describes a 5% late-payment penalty on estimated tax, recovery action for overdue amounts, and possible summons or court-related steps. An estimate can create a balance that must be dealt with even while you are reconstructing the underlying records.

Possible penalty-waiver appeal

IRAS provides a penalty-waiver appeal through its digital service, subject to conditions. The stated conditions include filing all outstanding returns, paying overdue GST and having filed returns on time for the previous year. A waiver is not automatic: verify the current policy and your eligibility before relying on it, and file the missing return first.

Canada: GST/HST return

Find the filing date in your CRA account

Canada Revenue Agency filing dates depend on the reporting period and filing frequency assigned to your GST/HST account. Use the CRA account or the filing notice for the exact missed date rather than importing a deadline from another country.

How the late-filing penalty is calculated

For a late return with tax owing, CRA describes the penalty as A + (B × C):

Element CRA calculation
A 1% of the amount owing
B 25% of A
C Number of complete months the return is overdue, up to 12

For example, if a hypothetical return has $1,000 owing and is two complete months late, A is $10, B is $2.50 and the calculated penalty is $15. This example illustrates the formula; your account’s assessment controls the actual amount.

CRA says it will not charge this late-filing penalty when the amount owing is zero or CRA owes a refund. An overdue balance may still accrue interest. The interest rate is set quarterly, so confirm the current rate and balance in CRA’s account tools rather than applying an old percentage.

File even when payment is difficult

CRA separates filing from payment. If you cannot pay in full or on time, contact CRA to discuss the balance and available arrangements, but do not delay filing while arranging payment. Filing establishes the return information; payment arrangements address the resulting debt.

Late-filing consequence Late-filing and late-payment penalties may apply; default assessment is possible. SGD 200 immediately, then SGD 200 per completed month, capped at SGD 10,000 per return. When tax is owing, 1% of the amount owing plus 25% of that 1% for each complete month overdue, up to 12 months.

The table is a navigation aid, not a substitute for the authority’s current calculation. Amounts, account status and notices can change the balance.

If you cannot reconstruct the return

Do not leave the period unfiled because records are incomplete. Separate the work into two tracks: submit the best accurate return you can support, and continue resolving missing invoices, bank records or import documents. If the period is complex, involves mixed taxable and exempt supplies, or has already produced an assessment or enforcement notice, a qualified local GST adviser can help review records and communicate with the authority.

Keep a written record of the steps you take: the period covered, date filed, amount calculated, payment date, confirmation number, contact details for any authority conversation and documents supplied. This record helps you identify whether a balance is still open and supports any permitted waiver, objection or correction process.

What to check after submission

  • Confirm the return status shows received or filed, not merely saved as a draft.
  • Verify that the payment was made using the correct reference and has posted to the correct period.
  • Review notices for penalties, interest, an estimated assessment or a response deadline.
  • Check whether earlier or later periods are also outstanding.
  • Apply for any available waiver, review or dispute route only after reading the jurisdiction’s current conditions and deadlines.

The safest sequence is consistent across these examples: identify the correct authority, file the missing return, pay what is actually due, communicate promptly about any unpaid balance, and monitor the account until the period is closed.
