1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you filed a federal return using itemized deductions when the standard deduction would have produced the correct result, recalculate that tax year and generally file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Rebuild the entire return, attach the corrected forms the year-specific instructions require, and pay any additional tax promptly. A federal change may require a separate state amendment.
The right correction depends on the return year, filing status, age or blindness, dependent status, allowable deductions, and the timing of your original filing and payments.

Confirm that the standard deduction was actually the right choice
Start with the tax year you are correcting—not the current year. Compare the standard deduction available to you for that year with the total of your allowable itemized deductions. In most cases, federal income tax is lower when you claim the larger amount, but eligibility restrictions and deduction limits can change the comparison. See IRS Topic 501 and the IRS guidance on Schedule A.
Check the standard-deduction rules for that year
- Use the standard-deduction amount for the return year being amended.
- Verify your filing status, because the amount depends on whether you filed single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse.
- Check additions or restrictions related to age, blindness, dependency, or a spouse’s deduction choice.
- Make sure you were not barred from taking the standard deduction under a special rule for that year.
Recalculate allowable itemized deductions
Use only deductions permitted for that year. Schedule A may include qualifying state and local taxes, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, certain gambling losses, and qualifying medical expenses, each subject to its own limits. Do not use the amount printed on your original return without checking whether the underlying expense was deductible and whether an adjusted-gross-income limitation applied.

| Comparison | What to use |
|---|---|
| Standard deduction | The amount available for your filing status and circumstances in the tax year being corrected |
| Itemized deductions | The total of allowable Schedule A categories after that year’s limits and AGI-based restrictions |
| Corrected choice | Generally the larger allowable deduction, subject to the year’s eligibility rules |
If replacing itemized deductions with the standard deduction does not change taxable income, tax, credits, payments, or another reported item, do not assume an amendment is automatically required or unnecessary. The IRS describes circumstances in which it corrects processing errors or requests information without a taxpayer-filed amendment. Review the specific year’s instructions and any IRS notice before filing.
Decide whether Form 1040-X is required
A deduction error is generally corrected with Form 1040-X. The IRS amended-return FAQ says taxpayers should file an amended or corrected return when they need to change deductions, credits, income, filing status, dependents, other taxes, or withholding. Read the IRS amended-return FAQ for exceptions and processing situations.
Do not file merely because you received an IRS notice if the notice gives different instructions. Follow the notice, and amend only when the instructions or your corrected calculations call for it.

Changing the deduction affects more than one line. Recalculate the return as though the correct deduction had been used originally, then compare that version with the return as filed or previously adjusted by the IRS.

Gather the records
- The filed Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR and all schedules.
- Any IRS notice that changed the return after filing.
- Income, withholding, estimated-payment, and payment records for the year.
- Receipts and statements supporting itemized deductions, even if the corrected return will use the standard deduction.
- The standard-deduction amount and eligibility rules from that year’s Form 1040 instructions.
Recalculate downstream figures
Replace the itemized deduction with the correct standard deduction, then recompute taxable income and tax. Check whether the change affects any AGI-based deduction, credit, additional tax, withholding credit, estimated payment, refund, or balance due. A deduction change can alter eligibility or limits elsewhere on the return, so copying only the deduction line is not sufficient.
Use forms and instructions for the tax year being corrected. Line numbers, schedules, and rules change over time.
Complete Form 1040-X correctly
Prepare a separate Form 1040-X for each tax year. The Form 1040-X instructions require you to show the amount originally reported or previously adjusted, the net increase or decrease, and the corrected amount.

Enter the three columns
- Column A: Enter the amounts from the original return or the latest IRS adjustment.
- Column B: Enter the net change caused by switching to the correct deduction and by every related recalculation. Increases are positive and decreases are negative according to the form’s instructions.
- Column C: Enter the corrected figures for the amended return.
Use the line 2 instructions for the deduction section. When an originally filed return used itemizing, Column A generally reflects the total from the original Schedule A or the amount the IRS previously adjusted. For a switch to the standard deduction, follow the complete instructions for the specific year and enter the corrected standard-deduction result in the amended return columns.

Explain the change in Part II
Write a concise explanation identifying the tax year, the original itemized deduction, the standard deduction now claimed, and the resulting changes to taxable income, tax, credits, payments, and refund or balance due. Explain each changed line, not just the headline deduction. If the IRS previously adjusted an amount, identify that adjustment rather than treating the original filing as the only starting point.
Attach only the required forms and schedules
Attach corrected forms and schedules that relate to the change. The year-specific instructions determine whether a corrected Schedule A or another schedule is required. The current instructions discuss attaching Schedule A when a taxpayer is now itemizing, changes an itemized amount, or an AGI limitation changes a deduction; a taxpayer moving from itemizing to the standard deduction should follow the applicable year’s complete attachment instructions rather than automatically including or omitting Schedule A.
Include additional tax forms or schedules affected by the recalculation, and do not attach unrelated paperwork. Keep supporting receipts and statements with your records unless the instructions or an IRS notice asks you to send them.

If the correction creates additional tax
Pay as soon as practical after determining the corrected balance. Interest and certain penalties can continue to accrue on unpaid tax after the original due date. IRS Topic 308 says not to calculate and include interest or penalties on Form 1040-X; the IRS will make applicable adjustments. Use the payment options and payment date appropriate to the tax year and your filing method.
If the original return’s due date has not passed, a timely corrected or superseding return and payment may affect how penalties and interest are treated. Follow that year’s instructions rather than assuming the ordinary amended-return process applies.
If the correction produces a refund or credit
The general federal limitation period for a refund claim is the later of three years after the original return was filed or two years after the tax was paid. Early-filed returns are generally treated as filed on the due date for this calculation. Disaster relief, carrybacks, foreign tax credits, bad debts, and other special rules can change the deadline, so check the applicable instructions before relying on the general rule. The timing rules appear in the IRS amended-return FAQ and Form 1040-X instructions.

Review your state return separately
A federal deduction change can change state taxable income or state tax. State conformity rules, amendment forms, filing deadlines, and payment procedures vary. Contact the tax agency for the state and tax year involved and determine whether a state amended return is required. Do not attach a state return to the federal Form 1040-X.

Submit the amendment and monitor it
- Check that the tax year on every form is the year being corrected.
- Verify that Columns A, B, and C reconcile to your corrected Form 1040.
- Sign and date Form 1040-X and include all required schedules.
- Submit electronically if the tax year, return type, and software support it; otherwise mail it to the address in the instructions.
- Save a complete copy of the submission, confirmation, payment receipt, and supporting calculations.
The IRS says amended-return status can generally be checked about three weeks after submission. IRS Tax Tip 2026-35, published April 28, 2026, gives a typical processing estimate of 8 to 12 weeks, with some cases taking up to 16 weeks. These are estimates, not guarantees, and a notice or complex adjustment can take longer.
For tax years 2021 and later, the IRS says taxpayers may request direct deposit for an amended-return refund when filing electronically, subject to current IRS rules and the filing method used.
Avoid the most common mistakes
- Using the current-year standard deduction: Always use the amount and restrictions for the return year being amended.
- Changing only Schedule A: Recalculate taxable income, tax, credits, payments, and the final refund or balance due.
- Ignoring filing-status or dependent rules: These can change both the standard deduction and eligibility.
- Repeating the original figures incorrectly: Column A must reflect the filed return or the latest IRS adjustment.
- Attaching the wrong schedules: Follow the year-specific Form 1040-X instructions, especially when moving away from itemizing.
- Missing the refund deadline: Compare original filing and tax-payment dates with the applicable limitation period before submitting.
- Forgetting state consequences: Federal and state amendment rules are separate.
- Waiting to pay additional tax: Payment delays can increase interest and penalties.
When professional help is sensible
Consider a qualified tax professional or direct assistance from the relevant tax authority if the return involves several years, substantial additional tax, an IRS notice, an expired or uncertain refund deadline, a disaster or carryback rule, foreign tax credits, business or rental activity, or records that do not reconcile. A professional can calculate the amended return, but you remain responsible for reviewing the figures and signing it.
