Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you gave your Social Security number (SSN) to a scammer, stop communicating with them, send no more money or information, and begin protective steps today. Disclosure does not prove that identity theft has already happened, but it is enough reason to secure exposed accounts, protect your credit files, report the incident, and watch tax and Social Security records.
Start with the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov process for a personalized recovery plan. If you also gave bank, card, or online-account details, contact those institutions through numbers or websites you already know are genuine. Never pay someone who claims your SSN must be “saved,” “reactivated,” or replaced.

Do these things first
- End the scam contact. Do not call back, click links, open attachments, send gift cards or cryptocurrency, or provide another code, password, account number, or identity document. The IRS’s scam guidance says, “Immediately stop interacting with the scammer.”
- Contain exposed accounts. If you shared a password, PIN, security answer, debit-card number, bank details, or email credentials, change them immediately. Change any reused password on other services. Use a known-good route to reach your bank or financial institution, ask its fraud department what to do, and request that a compromised account be frozen or closed when appropriate.
- Save evidence. Keep the caller’s number, email address, messages, payment receipts, screenshots, dates, and the exact information you disclosed. Do not continue the conversation merely to collect evidence.
- Report the incident. File at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC process creates an Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan tailored to the accounts, charges, or credit-report entries involved.
If money moved from an account, contact the financial institution as soon as possible and ask whether a transfer, card payment, check, or wire can be stopped or reversed. Use the institution’s official app, statement, or card—not a number supplied by the caller.

Choose the right protection for your credit files
A fraud alert and a credit freeze are both free, but they work differently. Choose based on whether you expect to apply for credit soon and how much control you want over new applications.

| Option | What it does | How to place it | Duration and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-year fraud alert | Signals businesses to take steps to verify your identity before issuing new credit. | Contact one nationwide credit bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. | Lasts one year and can be renewed. It is less setup than a freeze, but it does not block access to your report. |
| Credit freeze | Limits access to your credit report, making it harder to open new credit in your name. | Request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. | Free and remains until you lift or remove it. You must temporarily lift it when a lender or service needs to check your credit. |
| Extended fraud alert | Requires potential creditors to contact you before issuing credit. | Available after identity theft; follow FTC instructions and provide the required Identity Theft Report. | Lasts seven years and is intended for confirmed identity-theft victims. |
When a fraud alert is the better first move
A one-year alert is useful when you want creditors to verify applications but do not want to manage a freeze before an upcoming loan, rental, utility, or phone application. Contacting one bureau is enough for the initial alert because it must pass the request to the other two. Renew it after one year if the risk remains.
When to freeze all three files
A freeze gives you stronger control over new-credit access. You must place it with each of the three nationwide bureaus individually. It does not close existing accounts, stop every form of identity misuse, or remove fraudulent information already reported. Before applying for credit or another service that checks a report, lift the freeze temporarily using the bureau’s current process, then restore it afterward.
Review every credit report
Obtain reports from all three bureaus through AnnualCreditReport.com and look for accounts, hard inquiries, collection items, addresses, or other entries you do not recognize. IdentityTheft.gov’s current guidance says reports can be checked weekly for free. A clean report today does not prove that no misuse will occur later, so continue checking.
File an FTC identity-theft report and use the recovery plan
IdentityTheft.gov is the practical starting point even when you are not yet certain that a fraudulent account exists. Answer its questions carefully, save the generated report and plan, and follow the sequence it gives you.

Save the report correctly
If you create an account, you can return to track progress and view updated steps. Without an account, print or save the report and recovery plan before leaving the site. Keep digital and paper copies with your scam evidence.
Repair an unfamiliar account or charge
- Contact the company’s fraud department and state that the account or transaction resulted from identity theft.
- Ask the company to close or freeze the account and remove the fraudulent charge or information.
- Provide the FTC Identity Theft Report when requested. The report can support a request to block fraudulent information from your credit files.
- Record the representative’s name, date, case number, promises, and documents sent. Keep copies of letters, emails, and confirmations.
A local police report can be useful in particular cases—for example, when a company or government agency requests one—but the FTC report and recovery plan are the practical starting point. Do not assume that filing a report automatically closes an account or corrects a credit entry; follow each company’s process.
Protect your federal tax filing
Someone with your SSN or an ITIN could try to use it on a federal income-tax return. An IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit code that helps prevent that misuse. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity can enroll through the IRS’s current online guidance. The IRS generates a new PIN each year.
If the IRS sends a notice
Use the response instructions and telephone number printed on the notice. Do not call a number supplied by the scammer or rely on an old number copied from an unrelated article. If the notice says a return was filed, complete the IRS identity-verification steps it specifies.

If your return is rejected or a return was filed for you
Report the problem through the IRS process and follow its verification instructions. Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit, applies only in circumstances identified by the IRS. Many people do not need to file it, including people already responding to an IRS notice or people whose problem is not tax-related. Filing the form unnecessarily can delay attention to the actual issue.
Check whether your SSN was used for employment
Review the earnings record in your Social Security Statement. Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) if it lists wages you did not earn. Incorrect wages can affect future benefit calculations and may indicate employment-related identity theft.
For employment misuse, IRS guidance recommends an FTC complaint and a fraud alert. You may also consider the Department of Homeland Security’s SSN lock for employment purposes. A lock is a specialized employment-protection step; it is separate from a credit freeze and does not replace checking your Social Security earnings record.
The SSA’s SSN misuse FAQ, published October 17, 2022, explains that SSA can address records showing wages that are not yours. Follow the agency’s current contact instructions rather than relying on a number delivered in an unsolicited call.

Recognize and handle follow-up impersonation
After an SSN disclosure, scammers may call again pretending to be the SSA, IRS, a bank, police, or a credit bureau. They may claim that your number is suspended, tied to a crime, or about to be cancelled unless you pay. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov guidance states: Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended.
- SSA does not threaten people or demand wire transfers, cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
- A government agency will not require you to move money to a “safe” account to protect it.
- Caller ID, a badge number, a copied letter, or personal details about you do not prove the caller is genuine.
- End the call and independently locate the agency’s official contact channel if you need to verify a message.
Do not pay a service that promises to “restore” or “reactivate” an SSN. An SSN is not suspended because you ignored a caller, and paying another intermediary can expose more information.
Monitor for signs of misuse
Set a recurring review schedule for the months ahead. Check bank and card statements, payment-app activity, medical bills, insurance correspondence, credit reports, and email-security alerts. Watch for password-reset messages, one-time codes you did not request, unfamiliar addresses, collection notices, and letters about accounts you never opened.

What a Social Security number disclosure does—and does not—mean
Your SSN is a serious exposure, but disclosure alone is not proof that a thief has opened an account, filed a tax return, or used your employment record. Protective actions are worthwhile because misuse may appear later, while a report or credit file can look normal immediately after the scam.
A credit freeze addresses access to credit reports and new-credit applications; it does not protect every account, tax return, medical record, benefit claim, or job record. A fraud alert asks creditors to verify identity but likewise does not investigate every type of fraud. Use the FTC recovery plan and the separate IRS and SSA steps for those risks.
Official guidance and dates
The procedures above reflect live FTC IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance, the FTC’s SSN-exposure guidance, SSA’s SSN misuse FAQ published October 17, 2022, and IRS guidance on scams, tax identity theft, IP PINs, and employment-related identity theft. The IRS IP PIN FAQ was updated May 21, 2026. Agency contact channels and enrollment screens can change, so use the current instructions on each agency’s official site when you take action.
