Start by checking the claim status in View recent claims through your Medicare online account linked to myGov or in the myGov app. If the claim is still within its usual processing period, wait and monitor it. If it says Completed but no money has arrived, trace the payment to every relevant bank account and confirm how you paid the provider. If it is Closed, rejected or missing, contact Medicare on 132 011 for the reason and the next correction or follow-up step.
Check the claim before doing anything else
A missing payment does not necessarily mean Medicare lost your claim. The quickest way to establish what happened is to review the claim record rather than submit another one.

- Sign in to your Medicare online account through myGov, or open the myGov app.
- Open Medicare and select View recent claims.
- Find the claim for the appointment and note whether it is Submitted, Completed or Closed.
- Check the date, provider and benefit amount against your invoice or receipt.
Completed and closed claims remain visible in recent claims for 30 days. Check the record during that period and save the claim or statement details if you need to call.
What each status means

Services Australia describes the first status this way: “Submitted: Your claim was submitted successfully and will be processed by us.” A status is not a promise that funds have reached your account; it tells you which troubleshooting branch to follow.

Allow the correct processing time
The submission channel affects how long a claim usually takes. Services Australia’s Medicare claims guidance, last updated 14 November 2025, gives these operational timeframes:

These are usual service timeframes, not guarantees. Weekends, public holidays, missing information or a claim that needs checking can affect when it is finalised. If the claim is still marked Submitted and the applicable period has not passed, submitting a second claim can create a duplicate and make the record harder to resolve.
Use the official Medicare claims page for the current guidance if a material amount of time has passed or the published service information changes.
If the claim says Completed but the money is missing
Completed confirms processing, but it does not identify which account received the benefit. Trace the payment using the payment method used at the appointment.

Check every plausible payment destination
- Review all bank accounts you hold, including accounts that are not your everyday spending account.
- Check the bank account details Medicare currently holds for you.
- Look at the account linked to the EFTPOS card used to pay the provider. An EFTPOS claim can be paid to the account associated with that card.
- If you paid cash, expect the benefit to be paid electronically to your registered bank account rather than returned as cash.
- Search your transaction history for a Medicare or Services Australia deposit around the completion date, including under a different account name or description.
Services Australia explains payment destinations and bank-detail checks in Getting Medicare benefits. The account that received the benefit may therefore differ from the account you normally use to pay bills.
Check whether incorrect details are holding the payment
An incorrect or outdated account number can cause a Medicare payment to be held. In your Medicare online account or the myGov app, view the bank details Medicare has recorded and correct them if necessary. Follow the prompts in the account rather than entering details from memory, and make sure the account can receive electronic deposits.

Updating details does not by itself prove where an already-completed payment went; if the transaction is still missing, ask Medicare to trace that claim.

Use the statement to reconcile the amount
Compare the provider’s receipt with the Medicare statement: service date, provider, item, benefit and any patient payment should line up. A statement can show that Services Australia processed a benefit even when you have not yet identified the receiving account. Keep the receipt and statement together before calling, because Medicare can use those details to locate the transaction.

If the claim is Closed, rejected or not shown
A closed claim cannot proceed in its current form. The health professional may have cancelled it, or Services Australia may have been unable to process it. Call Medicare for the specific reason attached to the claim and ask whether you need to provide information, correct an error, have the provider amend the claim or submit a new claim.
Why a claim may be rejected
Services Australia lists several possible causes, including a duplicate claim, missing information, an error in the claim, an eligibility or Medicare-item issue, a system problem, or reaching the maximum allowable benefits. These possibilities require different remedies, so do not assume that a rejection means you are permanently ineligible.
A rejected claim will not appear on the Medicare statement. Its absence from the statement alone does not prove that nobody lodged it: check View recent claims, your provider paperwork and the date of submission, then ask Medicare to confirm whether a claim exists and why it was rejected. Do not lodge a duplicate while investigating
Before starting another claim, inspect the invoice or receipt. If it says Statement of claim and benefit payment, the guide says the claim is being processed automatically and should not be submitted again. Duplicate submissions can become one of the reasons a claim is rejected, so resolve the existing record first.

Correct payment details safely
- Open Medicare from myGov on the web, or open the Medicare service in the myGov app.
- Locate the section showing your bank details and compare the account number and account name with your bank record.
- Edit the details if they are wrong, then review the confirmation carefully before saving.
- Return to recent claims and note the claim number, completion date and benefit amount.
- If the payment remains missing after the details are corrected, call Medicare and provide those claim details; changing the account does not replace a payment trace.
Use a secure myGov session and never send your full bank details by ordinary email or to a person who contacts you unexpectedly. For instructions on Medicare online access, see the Medicare online account page.

The Medicare phone page lists service hours of Monday to Friday, 7 am to 10 pm, and weekends, 7 am to 7 pm. Hours can change, so check the current Services Australia phone information before calling. The same page lists the online-services number for account-access problems, while 132 011 is the Medicare claims number.
When you speak with Medicare, describe the sequence plainly: the service date, how you paid, when and how the claim was lodged, the current status, the accounts you checked and any bank-detail correction you made. Ask the officer to identify the recorded reason and whether the next action belongs to you or the health professional. Do not assume a resubmission is appropriate until Medicare confirms it.
Common situations and the right next move
The appointment was only a few days ago and the claim is Submitted
Keep the receipt and wait through the normal online window, or the mail window if the provider posted the claim. Recheck recent claims rather than filing another claim. If the status changes to Completed, move to payment tracing; if it changes to Closed, call for the reason.

The provider said the claim was lodged, but there is no recent-claims record
Ask the provider for the submission date and a copy of the paperwork, including whether it was an automatic statement-of-claim process. Check again within the 30-day visibility period if a claim later appears. If there is still no record, contact Medicare with the provider and service details so an officer can determine whether the claim was received.
The claim is Completed but the bank shows no deposit
Check the EFTPOS-linked account and every registered account, then verify Medicare’s bank details and reconcile the statement. If none of those checks identifies the payment, call 132 011 and ask for a trace of the completed claim rather than lodging a replacement.
The claim is Closed after the provider cancelled it
Contact the provider first if the account or service details need correction, then ask Medicare whether the provider must lodge an amended claim or whether you must submit supporting information. The correct path depends on the recorded closure reason.

Compare the item and benefit on the statement with the receipt. A benefit can be affected by the Medicare item billed, eligibility rules or maximum-benefit limits. Ask Medicare to explain the calculation for that item; do not infer an error solely from the amount.
Keep a record while the issue is resolved
- Save the provider invoice, receipt and any wording about a statement of claim.
- Record the date and channel used to lodge the claim.
- Take a note or screenshot of the status and completion or closure date while it is visible.
- Record which bank accounts and EFTPOS card account you checked.
- Write down the Medicare call date, the officer’s instructions and any reference number provided.
This record lets the next officer or provider see exactly where the process stopped and reduces the risk of an unnecessary duplicate claim. The operational figures above describe normal processing and online visibility, not a guaranteed outcome or a compensation entitlement.
