If bank OTPs stopped after you changed your phone number, first check the masked number shown on the OTP screen. If it shows your old number, the bank is still sending codes to its previous record and you must update that record through the bank’s official process. If it shows the new number, troubleshoot the registered SIM, SMS service, filters, signal and roaming, then contact the bank or carrier based on what you find. The exact update route differs by bank and country.
Start by identifying which problem you have
An OTP is normally sent only to the mobile number registered for the relevant account, card or digital-banking service. Changing the number in your phone’s contacts, replacing the handset or reinstalling a banking app does not necessarily change the bank’s record. The fastest diagnosis is to compare the number the bank displays with the number you now use.

Do not assume that every service at a bank shares one mobile-number record. Login OTPs, card transactions, mobile-app activation and a separate verification app can have different enrollment states.

Look at the masked number on the OTP page, or at the contact details in the bank’s profile area. Security Bank Corporation in the Philippines says its OTP page displays the last four digits of the registered mobile number. That makes the screen a useful first check: compare those digits with both your old and new numbers.

If the displayed digits match the old number, your handset cannot solve the problem. Requesting another code, restarting the phone or installing the app again will still direct the message to the old record. Use only a channel that you independently verify on the bank’s official website or app, the telephone number printed on your card, or a branch. Ask which number-update procedure applies and whether the change has completed.
If the displayed digits match the new number, record that fact before contacting support. It tells the bank that its profile may be correct and helps it investigate delivery rather than repeating a profile change.
2. Update the registered number through the bank’s own process
When you can still sign in
Use the bank’s profile, personal-information or contact-details menu, following the current instructions for your country and account type. Some banks require an additional identity check, a confirmation message or a branch visit even when online access remains available. Complete every confirmation step and save the reference or confirmation screen.

When you are locked out
Do not use a number supplied by an unsolicited caller, text message or social-media account. Ask the bank what recovery route applies when the old number is unavailable. DBS Bank India, for example, describes an in-app profile-change flow and a branch request for a customer who cannot log in. That is an example of an access-dependent process, not a universal rule.
Confirm exactly what was changed
Ask support to confirm the number attached to the specific account, card and authentication method you are trying to use. A number can be correct in a general customer profile while an older card, a separate account or an app enrollment still points elsewhere. Ask whether the change is immediate, whether a security hold applies, and when you may attempt authentication again. Do not infer a waiting period or completion date unless the bank gives you one.
3. Check whether you are missing a login OTP or an activation SMS
These messages can follow different paths.
Login or transaction OTP
The bank generates the code and sends it to the number registered for that service. A wrong masked number indicates a bank-record issue. A correct masked number with no delivery points to the SIM, carrier, filtering or bank-side delivery.

Mobile-app activation message
Some activation flows send a verification SMS from your phone to the bank or its service. The phone must be able to send that message from the registered SIM. Axis Bank’s published activation guidance says the SIM in the handset must match the registered mobile number and that the registered SIM should be selected on a dual-SIM phone. Its troubleshooting guidance distinguishes a failed outgoing SMS from an SMS that was sent but did not complete registration.
Check the exact wording on the screen. If it reports that the SMS failed, the carrier is the appropriate first escalation. If it reports that the SMS was sent but registration still fails, contact the bank. Do not treat a missing incoming OTP and a failed outgoing activation SMS as the same fault.
4. Verify the registered SIM and message service
- Confirm the SIM is active. Make a normal call and ask someone to send an ordinary text. If the SIM has no service, contact the carrier before asking the bank to resend an OTP.
- Use the registered SIM in the handset. If you changed phones, move the physical SIM or complete the carrier’s eSIM transfer. If the handset has two SIMs, select the registered number for SMS and, where required, for mobile data or verification messages.
- Check signal and roaming. Weak coverage can delay or prevent delivery. When abroad, confirm that international roaming and SMS reception are enabled and that the carrier has not blocked the relevant service.
- Clear delivery obstacles. Check that the SMS inbox is not full, and review blocked-number, spam-protection and message-filtering settings. A security or messaging app may classify automated bank messages as unwanted.
- Test the SIM in another compatible phone. If ordinary messages arrive there, the original handset or its messaging settings are more likely to be responsible. If messages fail in both devices, give the carrier that result.
- Check the app’s SMS status. For an activation flow, note whether the outgoing verification SMS is marked failed or sent. Axis Bank advises contacting the service provider after a failed status and the bank when the message was sent but activation still does not succeed.
Changing the handset alone does not update a bank’s number. Replacing a SIM can also create a temporary carrier activation issue without changing the number held by the bank.

5. Contact the right party with useful evidence
Contact the bank when the record or service is wrong
Use the official app or website, the number printed on your card, or a branch. Tell the representative:
- when you changed the number and whether you changed the phone, SIM, or both;
- the last four digits displayed on the OTP screen;
- when the bank said the number update was completed, if applicable;
- whether ordinary SMS works on the registered SIM;
- whether the problem affects every OTP or only one account, card or app; and
- the exact error shown for an activation SMS.
Ask for a case or reference number, confirmation of the number attached to the affected service, and any alternative verification method the bank can safely provide. Never disclose an OTP, PIN, password or full login credentials to a person who contacts you unexpectedly.
Contact the carrier when ordinary SMS or sending fails
Tell the carrier whether incoming texts fail on one phone or several, whether calls work, whether you are roaming, and whether an outgoing activation SMS is marked failed. Ask whether short-code, automated or international SMS is restricted on the line. The carrier cannot change the bank’s customer record, so return to the bank after the line is working.

Bank-specific examples—and why they cannot be copied universally
Published instructions show why the correct route depends on the institution and country. Verify the current procedure directly with your own bank before acting.

What not to do
- Do not keep requesting codes to an old number; repeated attempts can trigger a temporary security lock without fixing the destination.
- Do not give an OTP, PIN, password or full credentials to anyone who calls or messages you claiming to be bank support.
- Do not change the number through a link in an unsolicited message. Open the official app or type the bank’s verified web address yourself.
- Do not assume deleting and reinstalling the banking app updates the bank’s customer record.
- Do not assume a replacement SIM, phone or signal booster can make a bank route messages to a different number.
- Do not use another person’s number as a temporary substitute unless the bank explicitly supports that arrangement and verifies your identity through its official process.
A practical decision path
- Read the masked digits. Old digits mean a bank-record update; new digits mean delivery or device troubleshooting.
- Test ordinary SMS on the registered SIM. If it fails, work with the carrier. If it works, continue.
- Check dual-SIM selection, filters, inbox capacity and roaming. Remove those obstacles and request one fresh OTP.
- Separate message types. For a failed outgoing activation SMS, contact the carrier; for a sent activation SMS or a missing login OTP, contact the bank.
- Escalate with evidence. Give the bank the masked digits, update date, SMS test result and exact error, and obtain a reference number.
The safe resolution is therefore not simply “get a new phone” or “wait for another code.” Establish which number the bank has for the affected service, update it only through an official route, then prove whether the registered SIM can send and receive ordinary messages. That sequence prevents wasted attempts and reduces the risk of handing account information to a scammer.
