If a personal-loan payment is becoming unaffordable, contact the lender before you miss it, explain the hardship, and state the amount you can realistically pay. Ask which assistance or modified-payment options are available under your contract and current policy. Do not agree to a new arrangement until you have its payment, interest, fees, payoff date, total cost, treatment of skipped amounts, and credit-reporting terms in writing.
If more than one debt is straining your budget, a nonprofit credit counselor can help you map the problem and assess a debt-management plan. Consolidation and settlement can have very different costs and risks; neither should be chosen solely because it advertises a lower monthly payment.

Start with a same-day affordability check
Before calling, make a short, factual budget. List take-home income, essential housing and utility costs, food, insurance, transportation, medical expenses, minimum payments on every debt, and cash currently available. Separate expenses that can be paused from obligations that protect your housing, transportation, health, or ability to work.

- How much can you pay toward this loan each month without missing necessities?
- Is the problem a one-time shock, such as a delayed paycheck or medical bill, or a continuing income shortfall?
- When is the next due date, and has a payment already been returned or missed?
Use a conservative number. Offering an amount you cannot sustain can lead to another default and a harder conversation later. Keep your loan agreement, recent statements, payment history, and income or expense records nearby.

Call the current lender before the due date
The Federal Trade Commission’s general debt guidance recommends contacting creditors and trying to work out a modified payment plan. That guidance does not create a universal right to personal-loan forbearance, a skipped payment, a fee waiver, or a lower rate. Availability depends on your contract, lender policy, account status, and circumstances.
What to say
Be direct: “My income or expenses changed, and I am having trouble making the scheduled payment. I can afford approximately $___ per month beginning ___. What assistance or modified-payment options are available for this loan?” Ask to be transferred to a hardship or payment-assistance team if the first representative cannot answer.
Questions that prevent surprises
- Is the payment being reduced, postponed, or moved to the end of the loan?
- Will interest continue to accrue during any reduced or skipped-payment period?
- Will late fees, modification fees, or other charges apply?
- How will amounts not paid on schedule be handled: added to the balance, spread over later payments, or due as a lump sum?
- What will the new payment amount and revised payoff date be?
- What total amount will I repay under the proposed arrangement compared with the current schedule?
- How will the account be reported to the credit bureaus while the arrangement is active?
- What must I do to accept the arrangement, and when does it become effective?
Ask the representative to send the terms through the lender’s secure message system, email, or mail. Write down the date, department, representative’s name or identification number, and any confirmation number. Continue making the scheduled payment unless the lender confirms a different instruction in writing; a phone conversation alone may not change the contract.

| Term to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| New payment and due date | Confirms the amount you must actually budget and when the first payment is due. |
| Interest rate and method | Shows whether the rate changes and how continuing interest affects the balance. |
| Fees and capitalized amounts | Reveals charges that increase what you owe, even if they are not part of the monthly payment. |
| Treatment of missed amounts | Identifies whether unpaid sums are deferred, added to principal, distributed across later payments, or demanded immediately. |
| Revised payoff date | Shows how much longer the obligation lasts. |
| Total repayment | Lets you compare the full cost rather than judging the offer by monthly payment alone. |
| Credit reporting | States how the lender intends to report the account while you follow the arrangement. |
| Conditions and cancellation | Explains what happens if you miss a payment under the modified plan or fail to return documents. |
Do not rely on a verbal promise that a late mark will be removed or that interest will stop. If the written terms differ from what you were told, pause and ask the lender to correct them.
If the payment is already late
Call immediately rather than waiting for a collection notice. Ask for the current amount needed to bring the account up to date, the date on which a late fee or adverse credit reporting may occur under your contract, and whether a hardship review is available. Request a written account history showing payments received, fees assessed, and the outstanding balance.
Prioritize an affordable, documented arrangement over a payment that exhausts money needed for rent, utilities, food, transportation, or medical care. If you receive collection calls, keep copies of letters and a log of dates, amounts, and promises. Never send money to a third party that cannot explain exactly which creditor it represents and how your payment will be applied.
When several debts are difficult: nonprofit credit counseling
A nonprofit credit counselor can review income, expenses, and unsecured debts and help you build a budget. The counselor may also assess a debt-management plan (DMP), in which one organization administers payments to participating creditors under negotiated terms.

What a DMP may change
A DMP may make one monthly payment easier to administer and may reduce the required payment through a longer repayment period or lower interest rate when creditors agree. It does not erase the principal you owe. Counseling or plan fees may apply, and not every lender or account must participate.
Questions before enrolling
- Which of my creditors and account types participate?
- What is the initial fee, monthly fee, and any fee for ending the plan?
- What payment will the counselor send to each creditor, and on what date?
- How long is the estimated repayment period?
- What happens if my income changes or I miss a plan payment?
- Will I send money to the counselor or directly to creditors, and how can I verify each payment?
Compare the plan’s total payments and fees with the cost of keeping your accounts under their current terms. A counselor should explain alternatives and risks, not pressure you to enroll immediately.
Consolidation: one payment, possibly a higher lifetime cost
Debt consolidation replaces multiple debts with a new loan and one scheduled payment. It can simplify administration and may offer a lower rate, but a lower monthly payment can result from stretching repayment over more years.

Debt settlement is a high-risk option, not a payment pause
Settlement companies attempt to persuade creditors to accept less than the full balance. The common model asks you to stop paying creditors and accumulate money for a later lump-sum offer. During that period, interest and fees can grow, credit damage can occur, and collection activity can intensify. A creditor may sue, and some lenders will not negotiate with a settlement company at all.
Settlement companies cannot guarantee a savings amount, a completion date, or that every creditor will agree. Forgiven debt can also raise tax questions that require advice based on your circumstances. Before signing, obtain a written schedule of every fee, the expected time and lump sum required, what happens when a creditor refuses an offer, and who controls the saved money.
Compare settlement with directly asking creditors for hardship terms, consulting a nonprofit counselor, and obtaining qualified legal advice. Never stop paying a creditor merely because a salesperson says settlement is the only solution.

Recognize debt-relief scam signals

Use an order of operations when money is short
- Protect essentials. Reserve enough for housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, and medical needs.
- Confirm the loan status. Check the due date, grace or late-fee terms in your contract, balance, and payment history.
- Contact the lender. State the hardship and sustainable amount; ask about lender-specific assistance.
- Get written terms. Compare payment, rate, fees, skipped amounts, payoff date, total cost, and credit reporting.
- Choose only an affordable arrangement. Do not accept a payment that forces another essential bill unpaid.
- Escalate for broader help. If several debts are unaffordable, speak with a nonprofit counselor about budgeting and a possible DMP.
- Evaluate consolidation mathematically. Compare APR, fees, term, promotional expiration, payment, and total repayment.
- Treat settlement as a last-resort decision. Review collection, lawsuit, credit, fee, and tax consequences before signing anything.
- Keep a record. Save statements, letters, secure messages, agreements, receipts, and call notes.
When to seek legal or insolvency advice
If you receive a lawsuit, wage-garnishment notice, or court deadline, do not ignore it. A qualified attorney or an approved legal-aid service can explain deadlines and defenses under the law where you live. Bankruptcy is a legal process with eligibility rules and long-term consequences; deciding whether it fits requires advice based on your complete financial picture. The general steps above do not determine your rights in a particular state or loan contract.
What this means for your credit report
No single credit-score outcome can be promised. Reporting depends on what the lender reports, the account’s status, and whether payments are made under the original or modified terms. Ask the lender to state its intended reporting in the written agreement, then review your account statements and credit reports for accuracy. Dispute an error with the company that furnished the information and the relevant credit bureau, keeping copies of your evidence.
Sources and scope
This guidance is U.S.-oriented. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s pages on credit counseling, debt management, debt settlement, and consolidation were last reviewed May 15, 2024 and August 28, 2023. The Federal Trade Commission’s general debt guidance covers contacting creditors, and its debt-relief scam alert was published in March 2026. Those sources do not establish a universal personal-loan relief program, specific eligibility, fees, or credit-reporting treatment. Your contract, lender, facts, and potentially state law control.
