What to Do If You Can’t Afford Your Credit-Card Bill and Personal-Loan EMI in India

If you cannot pay both a credit-card bill and a personal-loan EMI, contact both lenders before the due dates—or as soon as you realise you will miss them. Explain exactly what you can pay, by what date, and when you expect your cash-flow problem to end. Ask for formal options, their total cost, eligibility rules and credit-reporting treatment, then accept nothing until the terms arrive in writing.

Protect essential living costs first, but do not disappear or promise an amount you cannot meet. A card bill can become overdue on its due date, and contractual interest, fees and reporting consequences may arise well before any 90-day non-performing-asset (NPA) classification.

Take these steps today

  1. List the two obligations. Keep the latest card statement, loan agreement or repayment schedule, bank balance and next income date in front of you. Write the billed amount, minimum amount due, EMI, overdue amount (if any), interest rate and due date.
  2. Reserve essentials. Set aside money for food, housing, utilities, medication, insurance and transport before proposing a payment. A plan that leaves you unable to meet necessities is not sustainable.
  3. Call verified lender channels. Use the number on the card, statement or lender’s official website—not a message from an unknown “settlement” agent. Tell each lender: “I can pay ₹X by [date] and expect my income or expenses to change by [date]. What formal options are available?”
  4. Request written terms. Ask for the revised payment schedule, fees, interest or APR, total repayment, duration, account status and how the arrangement or missed amount will be reported to credit information companies.
  5. Keep paying what you can while waiting. An enquiry or promise from a call centre does not itself change the contract. Do not stop scheduled payments unless the lender confirms a replacement arrangement in writing and explains the effective date.

There is no RBI rule giving every borrower a guaranteed hardship restructuring of an ordinary personal loan or credit-card balance. Availability depends on the product, your contract, the lender’s policy and its assessment of your circumstances. The Reserve Bank of India’s Master Circular on income recognition, asset classification and provisioning and its card and personal-loan directions set disclosure and classification requirements, not an automatic concession.

What “overdue” and “90 days” actually mean

The 90-day figures are regulatory classification tests, not a free period in which nothing happens. A payment can be overdue from its contractual due date. Interest, late charges, collection contact and credit-reporting consequences can apply earlier under the agreement and applicable rules.

Situation RBI rule or threshold Practical meaning
Term-loan instalment More than 90 days overdue for the general NPA criterion Do not wait for day 90; the instalment is already overdue and other contractual consequences may start sooner.
Credit-card account Minimum amount due unpaid for more than 90 days after the statement due date for NPA classification This is an accounting classification test, not permission to delay payment.
Credit-card past-due reporting or penal charges Past due for more than three days, counted from the statement due date Reporting to credit information companies or penal charges may apply after this point under the cited RBI rule.

These thresholds come from the RBI Master Circular and do not predict exactly what your lender will charge or report. Read the card’s fee schedule and the loan contract for earlier triggers.

Credit-card bill: what paying the minimum does—and does not—do

The minimum amount due is not a payoff plan

The minimum amount due is the portion of the billed amount that the card terms require you to pay to avoid the bill being treated as overdue under those terms. It is not a promise that the remaining balance is affordable, and it does not normally prevent interest on the unpaid portion.

The RBI requires issuers to display this warning: “Making only the minimum payment every month would result in the repayment stretching over months / years with consequential compounded interest payment on your outstanding balance”. The warning reflects the central risk: a small payment can leave principal outstanding while interest compounds.

If a previous month’s balance remains unpaid, the interest-free period is suspended. New purchases can therefore attract interest according to the card’s calculation method until the balance is cleared under the issuer’s terms. Check the statement for the annualised percentage rate (APR), daily or monthly interest method, late-payment charge, taxes and the order in which payments are applied.

Should you pay the minimum?

If you can pay the minimum without diverting money from essentials, doing so may be less damaging than paying nothing, but it is not personalised advice or a guarantee of a particular credit outcome. The actual cost depends on your card’s APR, balance, fees and payment history. Stop new card spending while you stabilise the account; otherwise, fresh purchases can keep the balance from falling.

Questions for the card issuer

  • What is the exact amount due, the minimum amount due and any amount already overdue?
  • What interest, late fee, tax and other charges will apply if I pay ₹X on a specified date?
  • Can you offer a documented payment arrangement or conversion of eligible transactions to instalments? What is the total rupee cost and revised schedule?
  • Will the arrangement change the account’s status or the information sent to credit information companies?
  • Can you email or otherwise provide the terms before I accept?

Personal-loan EMI: identify the rate and ask about reset choices

Floating-rate EMI loans

For an EMI-based personal loan with a floating interest rate, RBI rules require the lender to communicate the effect of benchmark-rate changes. At a rate reset, the borrower must be offered a choice between a higher EMI, a longer tenor, or a combination of both. A lender may also offer conversion to a fixed rate under its board-approved policy; it is not an automatic entitlement.

The lender must disclose applicable switch or service charges in the sanction documentation and when the loan is revised. Ask for a quarterly statement showing principal and interest recovered, EMI, EMIs remaining and the annualised rate or APR. These details let you test whether a lower monthly payment simply creates a much larger total repayment.

Fixed-rate loans and hardship requests

A fixed-rate loan may not have the same reset mechanism. You can still ask for a hardship arrangement, tenor extension, revised EMI or settlement, but the lender’s policy and your contract control eligibility. RBI’s reset direction does not create a general right to restructure an unaffordable loan.

Questions for the loan lender

  • Is my loan fixed or floating, and what benchmark and spread determine the rate?
  • What is overdue now, including interest and charges?
  • Can the EMI, tenor or both be changed, and is fixed-rate conversion available under your policy?
  • What will be the revised EMI, interest rate or APR, remaining tenor, fees and total repayment in rupees?
  • Will the account remain current, be marked under a special arrangement, or be reported as overdue? How will missed instalments be shown?

For the governing reset requirements, see the RBI’s Reset of Floating Interest Rate on Equated Monthly Instalments (EMI) based Personal Loans, dated August 18, 2023 and updated as of October 1, 2025, and its FAQs dated January 10, 2025.

How to compare an arrangement

A lower monthly payment can be useful for cash flow but expensive over time. Compare every written offer on the same set of measures:

  • cash required immediately;
  • new EMI or card minimum;
  • interest rate or APR and whether it is fixed or floating;
  • remaining and revised repayment period;
  • processing, conversion, late or other fees and applicable taxes;
  • total repayment and total interest in rupees;
  • account status and credit-information reporting; and
  • whether missed amounts under the old schedule remain payable.

For example, extending a loan tenor may reduce this month’s EMI while adding interest for extra months. A card instalment conversion may stop revolving interest on the converted amount but can include a fee and leave other transactions outside the plan. Do not choose based only on the smallest advertised EMI.

If you have already missed a due date

  1. Pay the amount you can through the lender’s verified channel and save the receipt or reference number.
  2. Call immediately and ask for the exact overdue amount, the date on which charges or reporting apply, and any formal cure or arrangement process.
  3. Request confirmation of how the payment will be allocated between fees, interest and principal.
  4. Ask when and how the lender will update any information sent to credit information companies.
  5. Continue responding to messages and letters. Ignoring contact can remove opportunities to resolve the account before escalation.

Do not describe the account as safe merely because it has not reached 90 days. The RBI thresholds separate NPA classification from earlier overdue treatment.

Protect yourself from costly fixes

  • Do not borrow at a very high cost to make a token payment. Compare the new loan’s APR, fees, tenure and total repayment with the existing obligation; a short-term rollover can deepen the shortfall.
  • Do not pay an unverified third party promising to erase debt or guarantee a credit-score result. No caller can lawfully promise a particular lender decision or reporting outcome.
  • Do not promise a date you cannot meet. A realistic proposal, documented in writing, is more useful than repeated broken commitments.
  • Keep records. Save statements, emails, call reference numbers, payment receipts and the final schedule. They are essential if the lender’s records later differ from what was agreed.

A simple decision rule for the next payment

First protect essentials and any obligation whose immediate non-payment would threaten housing, utilities, food, health or employment. Then make the largest sustainable payment you can to each lender while negotiating a documented arrangement. If paying a card minimum would leave no money for necessities, tell the issuer that plainly and ask what hardship process exists rather than taking an unaffordable new loan. If you can pay the minimum and still cover essentials, understand that interest and the suspended grace period can make the balance grow, so stop new spending and set a date for a larger repayment or formal conversion.

For the personal loan, obtain the lender’s rupee figures before choosing a higher EMI, longer tenor, combined change or any fixed-rate switch. The right option depends on your balances, rates, income, expected recovery date and the lender’s written terms; there is no universal best choice.
