If your current bills leave no room for a 401(k) contribution, you do not have to keep an unaffordable payroll deduction. First find out exactly what your plan allows and what employer match, if any, you would retain at a lower contribution. You may be able to reduce the amount, pause it temporarily, or set a small fixed-dollar deduction. A hardship distribution is a separate, last-resort decision: the plan may not offer one, qualifying rules are narrow, and taxes plus a possible additional tax can permanently reduce your retirement savings.
The practical sequence is to check your plan documents, model the effect on your next paycheck, ask the administrator about match conditions and timing, and then choose the smallest sustainable contribution—or none for now—without assuming that another employer’s rules apply to you. These are general U.S. rules, not individualized tax or financial advice.

Start with the cash-flow problem, not the account balance
List the expense that makes the contribution unaffordable and whether it is temporary or ongoing. A rent increase, medical bill, seasonal utility spike, job interruption, or high-interest debt can require a different response from a permanent income shortfall. Review one or two recent paystubs and your essential bills so you know the dollar amount your household can actually spare each pay period. Do not treat the IRS contribution limit as a target: the basic employee elective-deferral limit for most 401(k) plans is $24,500 in 2026, but that is only a legal ceiling. IRS guidance does not establish an affordable amount for any particular household.
There is no universal rule that puts retirement contributions ahead of emergency savings, debt payments, or essential bills. The right trade-off depends on your income stability, obligations, interest costs, available cash, and plan terms. Your goal is a contribution decision you can maintain without missing necessities or creating new expensive debt.

Find out what your plan actually permits
Before changing payroll deductions, read the summary plan description (SPD) or ask the plan administrator. The SPD should explain how to start, stop, or change deferrals, the effective date for a change, eligibility requirements, the employer-match formula, vesting, and any special procedures. Human-resources staff can point you to the document, but the administrator is the source for your plan’s operational rules.
Questions to ask the administrator
- Can I choose a lower percentage, a specific dollar amount per pay period, or both?
- What is the deadline for a change to affect the next paycheck, and when will it become visible in payroll?
- Does any employee contribution qualify for a partial match, and what contribution is needed for the full match?
- Are there eligibility, service, or vesting conditions for matching contributions?
- Does the plan permit hardship distributions, and what documentation and processing time apply?
Some plans allow a fixed dollar amount each pay period, while others offer only percentage elections. Labels in a payroll portal vary, so confirm the result with the administrator rather than relying on a generic online instruction.
Compare a smaller contribution with stopping temporarily
A smaller deduction can preserve some retirement saving and possibly part of a match while freeing cash. A temporary pause creates the largest immediate increase in take-home pay but may forfeit matching contributions during the pause. Whether either choice is available, and how quickly it takes effect, is plan-specific.
| Choice | Immediate cash-flow effect | Employer match | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the current contribution | No change to the current paycheck | Match continues under the existing formula, if you are eligible | Confirm that the deduction is not causing missed essential bills or new costly borrowing |
| Reduce to a lower percentage | Increases take-home pay by the amount of the reduction, subject to payroll timing | May retain a partial match or lose some or all of it, depending on the formula | Ask what contribution earns the full match and what earns any partial match |
| Set a fixed dollar amount | Provides a predictable deduction when the plan supports dollar elections | Depends on how the dollar amount translates under the plan’s match rules | Verify that the plan permits this method and that payroll applies it correctly |
| Pause contributions | Largest immediate increase in take-home pay | Employee contributions generally are required for a match, so matching may stop while you contribute nothing | Check restart rules, effective dates, and whether automatic enrollment or escalation will resume deductions |
Do not assume that stopping contributions has the same result at every employer. Some plans match only up to a stated percentage of pay; others impose timing or eligibility conditions. A match may also be capped, so contributing above the amount needed for the full match may not produce additional employer money.

How to lower or pause your contribution
- Open your plan information. Use your employer’s benefits or payroll portal, or request the SPD and change form from human resources. Look for the retirement contribution or deferral setting; the exact menu name differs by provider.
- Record the current election. Note whether it is a percentage or dollar amount, the pay frequency, and the date of the last deduction. Save a screenshot or confirmation number before submitting a change.
- Ask about the match threshold. Have the administrator explain the formula in plain language, including any cap, eligibility requirement, and vesting rule. Ask specifically what happens if you contribute less than the amount used in the formula.
- Choose a sustainable amount. Enter the lower percentage or fixed dollar amount the plan permits. If your budget cannot support any contribution, select the pause option only after confirming how to restart it.
- Confirm the effective paycheck. Payroll cutoffs can mean that one or more deductions occur after you submit the request. Check the next paystub and contact payroll promptly if it does not match the confirmation.
- Set a review date. Put a date on your calendar to reassess after the expense changes, a raise, debt payoff, or other improvement. A pause without a review date can become an unintended permanent gap.
When a contribution resumes, verify the first deduction and the employer contribution separately. A payroll election and an employer match can post on different schedules.
Will you lose your employer match if you stop contributing?
Often, an employee salary contribution is required to receive a match, but the exact answer comes from your plan document. The Internal Revenue Service describes the general condition as participating and contributing from your salary; it does not impose one universal match formula. Your employer may offer no match, a match only up to a cap, or a formula with additional eligibility and vesting conditions.
Ask for three concrete figures from the administrator: the contribution that receives the full match, the amount (if any) that receives a partial match, and the maximum employer contribution for the relevant period. Keep those figures with the effective date because a change in employment status or plan year can affect eligibility. IRS examples of matching formulas illustrate how plans can work, but they are examples rather than typical or representative outcomes.

A hardship distribution is money taken from the account to address an immediate and heavy financial need. A 401(k) plan is not required to offer this feature. If your plan does offer it, the distribution generally cannot exceed the amount necessary to meet the need, taking into account other resources and rules in the plan.

Expenses that may fit safe-harbor categories
IRS rules identify categories that can qualify under a plan’s hardship provisions, including certain medical expenses, costs directly related to buying a principal residence, tuition and related educational costs, payments needed to prevent eviction or foreclosure, funeral expenses, and certain qualifying home-repair costs. A category alone does not guarantee approval: the plan’s terms, your facts, and required documentation control.
Financial consequences
- The untaxed portion is generally included in taxable income for the year of distribution.
- An additional 10% tax may apply before age 59½ unless a statutory exception applies.
- The amount generally cannot be repaid to the plan or rolled over to another retirement account.
- The withdrawn money no longer compounds for retirement, permanently reducing the assets available later.
Ask the administrator which documents are required, how the plan determines the amount necessary, and when funds would arrive. Separately, ask a qualified tax professional how the distribution would affect your federal and state tax situation. Do not assume that a hardship distribution is available simply because you have an urgent bill, and do not treat it as a routine way to adjust your paycheck.
A decision worksheet for your next paycheck
Write the answers down before making an election. This prevents a plan’s match language or a payroll deadline from being overlooked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Cash need: What exact amount must be freed each pay period, and for how many pay periods?
- Plan flexibility: Does the plan permit a lower percentage, a fixed dollar amount, or a temporary stop?
- Match retained: Under the actual formula, what employer contribution would remain at each affordable election?
- Timing: What is the payroll cutoff, effective paycheck, and expected posting date?
- Eligibility and vesting: Are there service or employment conditions that affect the match you see on your statement?
- Review trigger: What event—expense ending, pay increase, or debt payoff—will prompt you to raise the contribution again?
- Withdrawal test: If considering a hardship distribution, does the plan offer it, does the expense fit the rules, and have you estimated taxes and the lost retirement growth?
Compare choices using the same four measures: take-home-pay effect, employer match retained, plan rules and timing, and the tax and retirement consequences of any withdrawal. This produces a transparent choice without pretending that one priority is right for every household.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every employer offers a match
Correct the assumption by checking the SPD and your account statement. If no match exists, the match question should not drive your election; affordability and your other obligations remain central.
Reducing below the match threshold without checking
Ask for the formula before submitting the change. If you already reduced it, compare the next statement with the administrator’s explanation and decide whether a different affordable amount preserves more of the match.
Missing the payroll cutoff
A change submitted after the cutoff may not affect the next paycheck. Keep the confirmation, ask payroll which paycheck will reflect it, and budget for the intervening deduction.

Treating the annual limit as a required contribution
The $24,500 basic employee limit applies for 2026 to most 401(k) plans; it does not require you to contribute that amount. Eligible participants may have additional catch-up limits subject to plan rules, but neither the basic limit nor a catch-up provision establishes what your household can afford.

Taking a hardship distribution without calculating the net amount
Estimate the taxable income, possible additional tax, and amount that would actually reach you. Confirm that the plan permits the distribution and that the expense qualifies before submitting paperwork. Remember that the distribution generally cannot be returned or rolled over.
Tax-year changes to watch
For 2026, the IRS lists the basic elective-deferral limit for most 401(k) plans as $24,500. Limits can change, and your plan may impose operational rules that affect how elections are made. Recheck the IRS guidance and your SPD for the tax year in which you act.
The IRS’s 2026 Internal Revenue Bulletin says Saver’s Match contributions are scheduled to replace the Saver’s Credit for qualifying retirement-plan and IRA contributions for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2026. That is a future transition, not a benefit to assume is already available for 2026 contributions. Eligibility and implementation details should be checked against IRS guidance for the relevant tax year.

When to get individual help
Contact the plan administrator for plan terms, payroll timing, match calculations, vesting, and hardship procedures. Consider a tax professional for the tax result of a proposed distribution, especially if you may owe the additional 10% tax or have state-tax questions. A financial counselor or adviser can help you weigh competing household needs, but no adviser can replace the plan document when the question is what your employer’s 401(k) permits.
If the contribution is unaffordable today, changing it is a legitimate administrative decision, not a failure. Make the smallest election that fits your real budget, document the match you retain, and establish a specific condition for reviewing the decision.
