What to Do If You Cannot Pay Your Credit Card Balance in Full

If you cannot pay your entire credit-card statement, first separate two situations: you can pay the required minimum but not the statement balance, or you cannot afford even the minimum. Check the statement, calculate a payment that will not endanger essentials, and contact the issuer promptly. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says you do not have to wait until you are already behind to ask for help.

If the minimum itself is unaffordable, call before the due date if possible, explain the shortfall, state what you can pay and when you expect normal payments to resume, and ask what temporary options are available. Do not promise an amount you cannot reliably send.

Your statement normally shows a statement balance, a minimum payment and a due date. They are not interchangeable.

You can pay the minimum but not the statement balance

Paying the minimum by the due date addresses the immediate required payment, but any unpaid portion remains subject to the card agreement. Interest, fees, grace-period rules and the amount needed to avoid future interest depend on the issuer and account terms. Stop treating the statement balance as an all-or-nothing test: determine what you can pay consistently while protecting rent, utilities, food, insurance, transportation and required medical costs.

You cannot pay the minimum

This is an urgent cash-flow problem. A partial payment may not satisfy the minimum, and the issuer may apply it according to the account agreement. A missed minimum can lead to fees, interest changes, credit reporting or collection activity, but the exact consequences depend on the card agreement, issuer and payment history. Call immediately rather than waiting for the account to become delinquent.

“Act right away and call your credit card company if you believe you’re unable to pay the minimum payment on your credit card.”

Step 1: Work out a payment you can actually afford

Use the figures on your latest statement and a short, realistic household budget. A spreadsheet, printed worksheet or notes app is sufficient; a paid planner is not necessary.

  1. Record the account facts. Write down the minimum payment, due date, statement balance, current interest rate if shown, and the issuer’s customer-service number.
  2. List take-home income. Include wages, benefits and other dependable income. Do not count a bonus, overtime or uncertain loan unless it is already available.
  3. List essential expenses first. Include housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, taxes, health costs and minimum payments on other obligations.
  4. Calculate the safe amount. Subtract essential expenses from dependable income, leaving a cushion for irregular bills. The result is the amount available for this card and other debts—not automatically the amount to promise the issuer.
  5. Decide what changes are possible. Pause nonessential spending and identify whether the shortfall is a one-time emergency or a recurring gap. A temporary arrangement cannot solve a budget that remains negative every month.

If paying the card would cause you to miss housing, utilities, food or necessary care, protect those essentials and tell the issuer that the minimum is not affordable. Keep a written record of your calculation and every conversation.

Step 2: Call the card issuer before the due date

The CFPB advises acting right away. You can request assistance before a missed payment appears; you do not need to be behind first.

What to say

Be specific and brief:

  • “I cannot afford the required minimum because [short explanation].”
  • “I can pay $X on [date].”
  • “I expect my normal payment to resume around [date],” or explain that the hardship has no certain end date.
  • “What temporary payment, due-date, fee or interest options are available on my account?”

Ask the representative to explain whether a proposed arrangement is a formal hardship or workout program, how long it lasts, and what you must do to enroll. Possibilities vary by issuer and are not guaranteed rights. An issuer may, for example, consider a lower minimum, a different due date, a waiver of certain fees or a reduced interest rate.

Questions to ask before accepting an option

  • What exact payment is due, on which dates, and for how many billing cycles?
  • Will interest continue, and at what rate? Will existing fees be reversed or merely stopped?
  • Will the card remain usable, be suspended or be closed?
  • How will payments be reported to credit bureaus while the arrangement is active?
  • What balance, rate, minimum and due date apply when the temporary period ends?
  • What happens if you miss one payment or pay late under the arrangement?
  • Will automatic payments, promotional rates or other account features change?

Do not rely on a verbal summary. Applicable consumer-credit rules require clear written disclosure of certain workout or temporary-hardship terms before the arrangement begins. Read the notice, agreement or secure-message confirmation, and keep it with your statements.

Step 3: Choose a path based on the size and duration of the gap

Issuer assistance, credit counseling, settlement and consolidation solve different problems. Compare them on the same practical questions: cash needed now, total repayment cost, changes to interest and fees, treatment of missed payments, card usability, whether you must stop paying, collection or lawsuit risk, and service fees.

Option How it works Key trade-offs to verify
Issuer hardship or workout You negotiate directly with the card company for a temporary payment, due-date, fee or rate change. Terms, account usability, credit reporting, interest, fees and post-program payment can vary. Get them in writing.
Nonprofit credit counseling or debt management plan A counselor reviews your budget; in a debt management plan you generally make one payment to the counseling organization, which distributes payments to creditors. Setup and monthly fees may apply. The plan can change payments or interest and fees, but it does not simply erase principal. Confirm creditors accepted the plan before sending money to an intermediary.
Debt settlement A company or individual seeks an agreement for you to pay less than the balance, often using a lump sum. You may be told to stop paying, allowing fees and interest to grow and increasing credit, collection and lawsuit risks. Creditors may refuse to settle. A settlement company cannot collect fees before settling or resolving a debt.
Consolidation loan or balance transfer Several debts are combined into one new account or payment. Compare interest duration, origination or transfer fees, repayment term and total paid. New credit does not fix an ongoing spending or income gap.
Bankruptcy consultation A bankruptcy attorney explains whether a legal proceeding could address debts. Eligibility, consequences and suitability require individual legal advice; do not decide from a general guide alone.

If you can pay the minimum but not the full balance

Make the required payment by the due date if doing so does not jeopardize essentials, then call the issuer to discuss reducing the cost or changing the due date. Ask how much you must pay and by when to preserve any interest-free treatment described in your agreement. Avoid adding new charges while you are carrying the balance; otherwise the amount owed may continue to rise even when payments are on time.

Use the budget to set a fixed extra payment, however small, and send it consistently. If the balance will not decline because the monthly budget remains short, move to counseling or another structured review rather than repeatedly making minimum payments without a plan.

If you cannot pay the minimum

Call before the due date and offer the largest amount you can pay without sacrificing necessities. Ask whether the issuer will accept a temporary lower payment, move the due date, waive a specified fee or reduce the rate. Ask how a partial payment will be treated; never assume it satisfies the minimum.

If you already missed the due date, call anyway. Explain the cause, the amount available now and the date you can make it. Request written terms and ask how the account will be handled while you are seeking assistance. Do not ignore letters, calls or secure messages. Keep copies of statements, payment confirmations and the names and dates of representatives.

When nonprofit credit counseling may fit

Credit counselors can help organize income and debts, build a budget and, in some cases, arrange a debt management plan. Such a plan generally consolidates your payment to the counseling organization, which then sends funds to participating creditors. It may lower the overall monthly payment or interest and fees, but it does not automatically forgive principal, and service charges may apply.

How to screen a counseling organization

  1. Ask for the total setup fee, recurring fee and any other charge before providing payment information.
  2. Request a written description of every service, the expected duration and what happens if you leave the program.
  3. Ask about counselor training and qualifications, and whether employees receive incentives for enrolling clients in a particular service.
  4. Confirm which creditors and accounts can participate and whether each creditor has accepted the proposed terms.
  5. Do not send money to an intermediary until you understand where it will be held, when it will be distributed and how missed distributions are handled.

The CFPB identifies the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, the Financial Counseling Association of America and the U.S. Department of Justice list of approved counselors as places to begin looking. Availability, fees and program terms still require independent verification.

Why debt settlement deserves extra caution

Settlement is not the same as counseling. The goal is to persuade a creditor to accept less than the balance, commonly after money has been accumulated for a lump-sum offer. A creditor can refuse to negotiate or reject the offer.

Some companies tell consumers to stop paying or stop communicating with creditors. During that period, interest and fees may increase, credit damage may deepen, collection activity may begin and a lawsuit is possible. The CFPB states that settlement companies are not allowed to collect fees before settling or resolving a debt.

Walk away from these promises

  • Guaranteed debt elimination or guaranteed savings.
  • Claims of a special government bailout program that will erase your balances.
  • Instructions to stop communicating with your card issuer.
  • Claims that all collection calls or lawsuits can be stopped.
  • Any demand for an advance fee before a debt is settled or resolved.

Contact the creditor yourself first or obtain nonprofit counseling before considering a settlement proposal. If you consult a settlement company, demand written fees, timing, account-handling instructions and the consequences of failure, and do not treat optimistic estimates as guarantees.

How to evaluate consolidation

Consolidation can simplify several payments, but it is not a budget fix. First identify why the balances grew and whether the revised monthly payment fits after essential expenses. If the same spending or income gap continues, a new loan can leave you with the old problem plus a new account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare each offer using the same numbers:

  • Interest rate and whether it is fixed, promotional or variable.
  • How long the quoted rate lasts and what rate follows.
  • Origination, annual, transfer or other fees.
  • Repayment length and the required monthly payment.
  • Total dollars repaid over the full term.
  • What happens if a payment is late or the promotional terms end.

Ask existing creditors about assistance and consider nonprofit counseling before taking a consolidation loan. Choose only a payment you can sustain without relying on new borrowing.

When bankruptcy enters the conversation

If no realistic budget can repay the debts and issuer or counseling options do not solve the gap, bankruptcy may be a possible legal route. The CFPB recommends consulting a bankruptcy attorney to understand how the process works. A general article cannot determine eligibility, which debts may be affected or what consequences apply to your property, credit and future borrowing.

After you reach an arrangement

  1. Save the signed agreement or secure-message confirmation and note the representative, date and reference number.
  2. Put every agreed payment date on a calendar several days early. Verify whether automatic payments must be changed or canceled.
  3. Check each statement for the promised payment, rate, fees and account status.
  4. Call promptly if income changes or an agreed payment becomes unaffordable; do not wait for another missed payment.
  5. Rebuild the budget after the temporary period ends so the next required payment is known before the first post-arrangement statement arrives.

The central CFPB guidance used here was last reviewed September 2, 2026. Its supporting pages on credit counseling and debt relief were last reviewed in 2023 and 2024. This is U.S.-focused information; your issuer’s agreement and payment history control the account-specific result.
