Stop and treat the device as untrusted until it passes the official checks. Do not enter a wallet backup, PIN or passphrase anywhere, and do not initialize a new Trezor that already has firmware installed. Check the seller, photograph the package, follow the authentication guide for your exact model and contact Trezor Support if anything fails.
An unauthorized purchase is a provenance warning, not automatic proof that your individual device is counterfeit. Trezor’s safety guidance says, “Never buy a Trezor from an unauthorized third party, as you can never tell who may have had access to it before you.”

First, identify which situation you are in
Your next step depends on whether the device is new and uninitialized, already set up, or reporting an authenticity failure. Do not use one branch’s instructions for another.

Before connecting or setting up the device
Preserve evidence
Take clear photographs of the shipping box, product box, seals, labels and contents before removing or changing anything. Save the order confirmation, listing URL, seller name, seller address, messages and payment record. This evidence can support a marketplace dispute or a compensation request.

Check the exact model and packaging generation
Use the authentication guide for the model you actually received. Packaging has changed over time, so an older-looking box or a difference from a current product photograph is not, by itself, proof of tampering. Trezor’s Model One guidance says to contact support immediately if the relevant seal is not intact; other models can use different packaging and seal arrangements.
A number printed on the box is not a device serial number. Trezor says its devices do not have serial numbers and that the box number identifies a packaging batch. It cannot independently prove that the hardware is genuine.
Use only the official setup software
Download Trezor Suite through Trezor’s official channel and follow the setup instructions for your model. Do not use a link sent by the seller, a social-media account or an unsolicited “verification” message. Never type your wallet backup into a website, form, chat or support ticket.

Trezor identifies its own shop, its official Amazon storefront and resellers on its current official list as generally safe purchase channels. That guidance does not authenticate every listing on a marketplace. A platform may host multiple sellers, so inspect the actual “sold by” or equivalent seller field, not just the marketplace’s name.

- Find the seller’s legal or trading name on your order and listing.
- Compare that name with Trezor’s current official reseller list.
- Save a screenshot of the listing, seller identity, condition description and return policy.
- Check whether the listing was fulfilled by a marketplace but sold by a separate merchant; fulfillment alone does not establish authorization.
- Keep all correspondence in the marketplace system so a dispute record is preserved.
Being absent from the list does not prove that a unit is counterfeit, but it means you should not rely on the seller’s claims as an authenticity test. Provenance remains uncertain until the device passes the official checks.
What Trezor Suite’s checks can and cannot tell you
During connection, Trezor Suite verifies firmware authenticity. Trezor’s firmware-authenticity material describes checks involving the firmware version and RevisionID; a mismatch produces a warning. Correctly signed firmware is an important safeguard, but it is not a reason to ignore other warning signs or claim that counterfeit risk is impossible.
For Safe-series devices, Trezor separately describes an authentication check involving Secure Elements. Do not apply details for a Safe model to a different Trezor model. Use the instructions written for the exact device in your possession.
If a new device has firmware already present before setup, stop. Trezor says its devices are distributed without firmware and receive firmware during setup. Do not “test” a suspicious unit by creating a wallet or entering a backup.

If Trezor Suite reports an authenticity failure
New and uninitialized device
- Disconnect or stop using the device as instructed by Suite.
- Do not initialize it, create a wallet, enter a backup or approve transactions.
- Record the exact warning, Suite version and device model, and keep your photographs and purchase records.
- Contact Trezor Support through its official channel for device-specific instructions.
Trezor’s warning guidance says to stop using a new device that fails the authenticity check and contact support. Do not let a seller persuade you to bypass the warning with unofficial firmware or a replacement backup.
Already initialized device
The priority changes from setup to protecting funds. Do not disclose the wallet backup, PIN or passphrase. Trezor states that support will not ask for those secrets while investigating an authenticity case; any request for them is unsafe.
Trezor’s official rescue guidance describes moving funds to a new wallet, retiring the questionable device and its wallet backup, obtaining a legitimate replacement and then moving funds to a wallet created on that replacement. Follow the current instructions in Suite and Trezor’s support material rather than an old click-by-click article, because available steps can depend on software version and account circumstances.

- Do not create new receiving addresses with the failed device. Trezor says a device that fails the authenticity check will not be able to generate new receive addresses.
- Prepare a legitimate replacement from an official channel or an authorized reseller.
- Create a new wallet backup on the replacement device and store it offline according to Trezor’s instructions.
- If a transfer is required, verify the destination address and network on a trusted screen before confirming each transaction.
- After funds have been moved, stop using the questionable device and its old backup. Do not keep using the old wallet merely because a balance remains visible in software.
The cited rescue procedure is general. Asset types, account structures and network requirements can differ, so ask official support before sending funds if you are unsure about a transaction or migration.

How to interpret packaging and seal problems
Packaging inspection is a supporting check, not a standalone verdict. Compare the box, seals and included items with the guide for the exact model and packaging generation. Trezor documents packaging changes over time, so a visual difference from a current product page may reflect an older legitimate package.
- Open box or damaged seal: stop treating the device as cleared and contact Trezor Support, especially when the model guide says to do so immediately.
- Missing contents: photograph the package as received and raise the issue with the seller or marketplace.
- Unfamiliar box number: do not use it as a serial-number lookup; it identifies a packaging batch.
- Seller insists the appearance is normal: rely on the model-specific guide and Suite’s checks, not on a seller’s reassurance.
Returns, refunds and warranty claims
Trezor’s FAQ says its RMA process applies only to purchases completed in Trezor’s own e-shop. For a device bought elsewhere, Trezor directs the customer to the seller that made the sale and says compensation should be negotiated directly with that seller. Warranty conditions can vary by country and by the reseller’s policy.
Send the seller a factual notice with the order number, date, seller identity, photographs, the exact warning or defect and the remedy you want. Do not mail back a device containing an active wallet or reveal its backup. If the marketplace has a time-limited dispute process, open the case promptly and attach the saved listing and communications.

Trezor’s support pages do not decide your consumer-law rights or guarantee a dispute outcome. Those issues depend on your location, payment method, seller terms and the facts of the purchase. Keep the original packaging until the seller or marketplace confirms the return procedure.

When replacing the device is the sensible option
If an initialized device fails an authenticity check, Trezor’s guidance is to move funds, stop using the device and its backup, arrange a legitimate replacement and create a new wallet on that replacement. For a new device that has not failed a check, replacement is not automatically required before support assesses it.
Use Trezor’s official shop, official Amazon storefront or a reseller shown on the current official list. On any marketplace, verify the actual seller attached to the listing. Channel-level guidance cannot authenticate an arbitrary third-party listing.
Common mistakes that increase risk
- Entering the backup to “verify” the device: no legitimate authenticity check requires you to disclose it.
- Sending the PIN or passphrase to support: Trezor says support will not request these secrets during an authenticity investigation.
- Initializing a device that already contains firmware: stop instead; Trezor expects firmware to be installed during setup.
- Using a box number as a serial-number test: Trezor says its devices have no serial numbers.
- Assuming a marketplace name means an authorized seller: check the actual merchant on the listing.
- Creating new receive addresses after a failure: Trezor says the failed device cannot generate new receiving addresses.
- Continuing to use an old backup after a rescue transfer: retire the questionable device and backup as directed.
- Trusting an old packaging photo: packaging generations change, so use the guide for the exact model and period.
A practical decision checklist
- Pause use and keep the device offline until you know which branch applies.
- Photograph the package, seals, contents and labels.
- Save the order, listing, seller identity and payment evidence.
- Check the seller against Trezor’s current authorized-reseller list.
- Compare packaging with the exact model guide, accounting for packaging changes over time.
- Run Trezor Suite obtained through the official channel.
- If firmware is already installed on a new device, stop and contact support.
- If Suite reports an authenticity failure, follow the uninitialized or initialized-device procedure.
- Never disclose the wallet backup, PIN or passphrase.
- Request compensation from the original seller or marketplace; use Trezor’s RMA route only for an e-shop purchase.
The safest outcome is not determined by a seller’s promise or a box number. It comes from preserving evidence, using the model-specific checks, taking an authenticity warning seriously and protecting wallet secrets throughout the process.
