If a student or postgraduate loan deduction on your payslip looks wrong, first compare the payslip with your repayment plan and Student Loans Company (SLC) account. Then contact payroll if the calculation, plan or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) notice appears wrong. Current-tax-year payroll errors can usually be corrected by the employer; prior-year errors, unauthorised deductions and refund claims follow different HMRC or SLC routes. Keep every payslip and your P60 while the issue is resolved.
Start with three records
Salary-based student loan repayments normally appear on the payslip alongside income tax and National Insurance. The deduction may be labelled as a student loan (SL), postgraduate loan (PGL), or similar payroll code. Before treating it as an error, check three records:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your payslip: note the deduction, pay period, gross pay and the plan code, if shown.
- Your repayment plan: sign in to your SLC account or check your annual statement to see whether you have Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4, a Postgraduate Loan, or more than one plan.
- Your loan account: compare deductions shown by payroll with amounts credited by SLC. Keep a copy of the account screen or statement if amounts do not match.
A deduction in one month can be legitimate even when your expected annual income is low. Payroll uses non-cumulative pay-period calculations, so overtime, a bonus or another unusually large payment can push that period above its repayment threshold. Annual-income refund rules are assessed after the tax year has ended, not from one payslip alone. GOV.UK explains the refund tests and process.

| What you see | Likely issue | First contact |
|---|---|---|
| The amount or plan on a current payslip is wrong | Payroll calculation, coding or reporting error | Your employer’s payroll or HR team |
| You were put on the wrong repayment plan | Plan information held by payroll does not match SLC | Payroll first; SLC for the refund route |
| You never had an income-contingent student loan | Wrong employee matched to an HMRC start notice, or payroll mistake | Payroll first; SLC if HMRC instructed payroll and payroll made no error |
| Deductions continued after a stop notice or after the loan was paid | Notice timing or overpayment | Payroll for an in-year issue; SLC for a refund after payoff or a stop notice |
| Deductions appear on payslips but are absent from the SLC account | Payment may not have been remitted or credited | SLC, with payslips and P60 |
| Your total income for the ended tax year was below the annual threshold | Possible annual-income refund | SLC after HMRC confirms annual income |
The distinction matters because an employer can correct some payroll mistakes directly, while SLC or HMRC must handle refunds or unauthorised deductions in other circumstances.

If the error is in the current tax year
Contact payroll promptly
Send payroll the relevant payslip, the plan information in your SLC account and a short explanation of what appears wrong. Ask the team to check the start or stop notice, plan code, calculation and year-to-date figures. Payroll is the correct first contact for an ordinary over- or under-deduction found before the employer’s final reporting for the year.
How an employer corrects an over-deduction
HMRC’s payroll guidance says that, before year-end forms and final remittance have been sent, an employer should repay an in-year over-deduction to the employee. The repayment is shown as a minus amount on the payslip, and the employer adjusts the amount sent to HMRC on its next Full Payment Submission (FPS). The employer also corrects the year-to-date figures.
There is an important exception: if HMRC has already issued a stop notice, the employer should not make the refund. SLC makes any refund due directly. Ask payroll whether a stop notice has been received and the date on which it was applied.
How an employer corrects an under-deduction
Where too little was deducted, the employer can recover the balance through payroll and update its year-to-date reporting in the next regular FPS or an additional FPS. It cannot recover more than the student loan repayment due for that particular month. If the full balance cannot be recovered in that pay period, the remainder can be taken in a later month.
These are employer reporting rules; you do not need to calculate an amended FPS yourself. Your practical task is to give payroll enough evidence to identify the incorrect pay period and plan.

What changes after year-end or after you leave
Check whether the final FPS has been submitted
Once the employer has submitted its final FPS for the tax year, HMRC says it does not need to alter an over-deduction through payroll. If the final FPS has not yet been submitted, the employer can still repay the employee and correct the year-to-date figure. Ask payroll which position applies rather than assuming that the pay date alone determines the route.
If you no longer work for the employer
After you leave, payroll may no longer be able to run a correcting payment. For deductions made without valid authority after year-end or after departure, HMRC’s manual says HMRC or SLC will make any repayment due directly. Contact the organisation identified by the reason for the error and provide your former employer’s name, dates of employment, payslips and P60.
Keep your own records even if payroll says it has corrected the return. A payslip or P60 showing a deduction is evidence if the amount later cannot be found in your SLC account.
Wrong repayment plan
Compare the plan in your SLC account with the plan payroll is using. A borrower may be entitled to a refund when they are on Plan 2 or Plan 4 but the employer has deducted under another plan. Ask payroll to correct the plan code for future payments, then contact SLC about the refund route. The process differs from a claim based solely on low annual income; use the reason that actually applies when you follow the official refund guidance.
If you have more than one loan type, do not assume that the highest threshold applies to every deduction. GOV.UK says that, for a combination of Plan 1, Plan 2 and Plan 4 loans, the refund test uses the lowest applicable annual threshold.

When annual income was below the threshold
A pay-period deduction is not automatically an error because your eventual annual income is lower. A bonus or overtime can trigger a deduction in that pay period under the non-cumulative method, even if your total income for the completed tax year is below the annual threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can ask for a refund on this basis only after the tax year has ended and SLC has confirmed your annual income with HMRC. The refund page displayed these figures on 13 October 2026:
| Loan type | Annual threshold displayed on GOV.UK |
|---|---|
| Plan 1 | £26,900 |
| Plan 2 | £29,385 |
| Plan 4 | £33,795 |
| Postgraduate Loan | £21,000 |
Those amounts are the figures shown by HM Revenue and Customs/GOV.UK for 2026 when the page was accessed on 13 October 2026. Thresholds can change, so check the official page for the tax year you are claiming. The page also provides a way to ask about thresholds for previous years.
If you never borrowed, or the deduction is unauthorised
You never had an income-contingent loan
Ask payroll to check whether it selected the wrong employee or made a coding error. HMRC’s guidance gives the example of a start notice being applied to the wrong person. If payroll confirms it acted on an HMRC instruction and made no payroll mistake, contact SLC and explain that you are not a borrower.
Deductions continued after a stop notice
An employer must stop deductions when it receives the relevant stop notice, but the notice may arrive after a pay run. Tell payroll the date of the notice and the pay periods affected. If HMRC has already sent the stop notice, payroll should not make an in-year refund; SLC handles the refund due to you.

If deductions are missing from your SLC account
Contact SLC when payslips or your P60 show deductions that have not been credited to the loan. Send clear copies of the affected payslips and P60, identify each pay date and amount, and include your employer’s details. HMRC says SLC can credit the amounts once satisfied that deductions were made, while HMRC reviews whether the employer can be pursued for an unremitted amount.
Do not discard the original documents after uploading copies. Keep a dated record of your messages and any case reference supplied by payroll, HMRC or SLC.
Overpayment after the loan was paid off
HMRC instructs the employer to stop deductions when the loan is paid in full. The notice can take around four weeks for the employer to action, so one additional deduction may occur after the balance reaches zero. SLC may contact you or issue a refund automatically. If you overpaid and have not heard from SLC, ask it for a refund through the official repayment service.
In the final repayment year, SLC may contact you about switching to Direct Debit. This can help prevent deductions continuing beyond the remaining balance, but it does not replace checking your payslip and loan balance.

A practical contact-and-evidence checklist
- Mark the affected pay periods. Write down the pay date, gross pay, deduction, plan code and whether the payment included overtime, a bonus or another unusual item.
- Check SLC. Compare the plan and account credits with the payslip. Save statements or screenshots showing any discrepancy.
- Ask payroll specific questions. Request confirmation of the plan used, the start or stop notice date, whether the final FPS was submitted, and whether a correction will appear on the next FPS.
- Use the correct route. Stay with payroll for a current-year calculation error; use SLC for wrong-plan, below-threshold, paid-off-loan and missing-credit refunds; involve HMRC or SLC directly when the employer has already made its final report or you have left.
- Keep proof. Retain payslips, P60s, SLC statements, emails and case numbers until the deduction is corrected and the credit or refund appears.
What to say in a payroll message
Keep the request factual and narrow. Include your employee number if your employer uses one, the pay dates affected, the amount deducted, the plan shown by SLC and the correction you are asking for. For example:

“My payslip dated [pay date] shows a student loan deduction of £[amount]. My SLC account shows [plan], but payroll appears to have used [plan or code]. Please check the notice and calculation, confirm whether the final FPS for the year has been submitted, and tell me how any correction will be reported.”
Keep variable details such as dates and amounts inside your own message; do not send account passwords or unnecessary personal information by ordinary email.
When to escalate
Escalate to SLC when payroll cannot explain a deduction, when a refund reason is not an ordinary payroll error, or when deductions have not reached the account. Escalate to HMRC through its official payroll or student-loan channels when the issue concerns an employer’s reporting or an HMRC notice and payroll cannot resolve it. Include the evidence you already supplied so each organisation can see the timeline.

Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- A payslip and SLC account are the starting records; verify the repayment plan before calling a deduction wrong.
- Payroll is normally the first contact for a current-year calculation or coding mistake.
- The final FPS, year-end timing and whether you still work for the employer determine whether payroll can repay you directly.
- Low annual income, a wrong plan, an early start, a paid-off loan and missing SLC credits have different refund routes.
- Keep payslips and your P60: they can prove deductions that SLC has not credited.
